My first ever male hummingbird. I tried for three weeks and finally must have made the nectar the way they like it! Very challenging to photograph hummingbirds, any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Female ruby-throated (A. colubris) and black-chinned (A. alexandri) hummingbirds can't easily be told apart where their ranges overlap, as in central Texas.
A Rufous Hummingbird visits the feeder at the Cape May Bird Observatory Center For Research and Education in Goshen, NJ. Recorded on 12/03/11.

I did not know the above fact while trying to take this photo nor was I thinking things through when I wanted to capture the beating wings of this hummingbird... even with 1/100s exposure the wings are still blurred! Incredible! I looked it up... you'd need to shoot at at least 1/1000th of a second to capture still wings in flight, but it's MUCH easier to do when using flash.
I believe the nest must have been in this tree. This little bird kept flyng back to this dead branch.
