A visit to Hanbury Hall, near the village of Hanbury in Worcestershire. A National Trust property since 1953.
Hanbury Hall is a large stately home, built in the early 18th century, standing in parkland at Hanbury, Worcestershire.
The main range has two storeys and is built of red brick in the Queen Anne style. It is a Grade I listed building. The associated Orangery and Long Gallery pavilion ranges are listed Grade II*.
Hanbury Hall was built by the wealthy chancery lawyer Thomas Vernon in the early 18th century. Thomas Vernon was the great-grandson of the first Vernon to come to Hanbury, Worcestershire, Rev Richard Vernon (1549–1628). Rev Richard and his descendants slowly accumulated land in Hanbury, including the manor, bought by Edward Vernon in 1630, but it was Thomas, through his successful legal practice, who added most to estates, which amounted to nearly 8,000 acres (3,200 ha) in his successor Bowater Vernon’s day.
Hanbury Hall is thought to stand on the site of the previous mansion, Spernall Hall, and Thomas Vernon first describes himself as ‘of Hanbury Hall’ in 1706, and this and other evidence leads to a likely completion date of about 1706. The date of 1701 above the front door is thought to be a Victorian embellishment, but no building accounts are known to exist.
Although Hanbury Hall appears to be of a very uniform style, the rear wall is clearly of a different and rather earlier style, and may mark the first phase of a building campaign when Thomas Vernon and his wife Mary first came into possession of Spernall Hall in 1692 when his bachelor uncle John Vernon died.
A notable feature of Hanbury Hall is the painting of the staircase, hall ceiling, and other rooms by the English painter Sir James Thornhill. They include a small representation of Rev Henry Sacheverell being cast to the furies – this relates to an incident in 1710 when Sacheverell, a Tory, was put on trial for sedition by the Whig government, and dates the paintings to that year. The focus of the paintings around the stairwell is the life of the Greek hero Achilles, as told by a range of classical sources. They are surmounted by a large representation of the Olympian gods on the ceiling.
The original plan of the Hall had a large undivided central hall with the main staircase leading off it, with many rather small rooms in the corner pavilions and north range – the south range was given over mainly to service rooms. The 18th century Worcestershire historian Treadway Nash, in his Collections for the History of Worcestershire, wrote “Here is a large handsome house built by Counsellor Vernon about the year 1710 when a bad style of architecture prevailed; many windows and doors, rooms small, many closets, few arched cellars, large stables and offices in full view, are marks of that time”.
When the heiress Emma Vernon (1754–1818) married Henry Cecil, 1st Marquess of Exeter in 1776, Cecil clearly was of the same opinion, as he remodelled the interior (other than the great hall) creating larger rooms and enlarging the north east pavilion. On the south façade, having removed a doorway he repositioned all the windows to lie under their first floor equivalent. On the south side there had been large formal gardens, clearly shown in Dougharty’s perspective drawing contained in the estate maps of the 1730s, and Cecil swept all these away (including the farm buildings in front of the Hall) and landscaped the park in the fashion of the time – he would have had contact with Capability Brown when being brought up by his uncle 9th Earl of Exeter at Burghley House.
Following Henry and Emma’s divorce in 1791 the contents were all sold, and the house remained empty until Henry’s death in 1804, when Emma and her third husband, John Phillips, were able to regain possession. As the house had lain unoccupied for so long, many repairs had to be carried out at that time. Emma died in 1818 and left her second cousin, Thomas Shrawley Vernon (1759-1825), as the heir to her estate after the death of her husband John Phillips. Phillips married again and had two daughters in Hanbury before finally moving out in 1829. From then, the eldest son of Emma's heir, Thomas Tayler Vernon (1792–1835), was able to occupy it. His grandson Harry Foley Vernon (1834–1920) MP, was created 1st Baronet of Hanbury in 1885, and was succeeded by his son Sir (Bowater) George Hamilton Vernon (1865–1940), 2nd Baronet. Sir George led an unhappy life, separating from his wife Doris, and spending his last 10 years living with his secretary and companion Ruth Horton, who later changed her name by deed poll to Vernon. During this time the agricultural depression led to a reduction in rental income, and Hanbury Hall suffered a lack of care.
In poor health, Sir George Vernon took his own life in 1940. There were no further heirs to the Baronetcy which became extinct. Sir George's estranged wife was able to move back in after his death, dying there in 1962. In the meantime, negotiations had led to the National Trust having the reversion, and after making essential repairs on Lady Vernon’s death, the hall was let to tenants and opened to the public on a restricted basis. In recent years the hall has been managed more commercially and is now open daily.

JURM, AFGHANISTAN— Small grants given directly to villagers have brought about modest but important changes in this corner of Afghanistan, offering a model in a country where official corruption and a Taliban insurgency have frustrated many large-scale development efforts.
Since arriving in Afghanistan in 2001, the United States and its Western allies have spent billions of dollars on development projects, but to less effect and popular support than many had hoped for. Much of that money was funneled through the central government, which has been increasingly criticized as incompetent and corrupt. Even more has gone to private contractors hired by the United States who siphon off almost half of every dollar to pay the salaries of expatriate workers and other overhead costs.
Not so here in Jurm, a valley in the windswept mountainous province of Badakhshan, in the northeast. People here have taken charge for themselves — using village councils and direct grants as part of an initiative called the National Solidarity Program, introduced by an Afghan ministry in 2003.
Before then, this valley had no electricity or clean water, its main crop was poppy and nearly one in 10 women died in childbirth, one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world.
Today, many people have water taps, fields grow wheat and it is no longer considered shameful for a woman to go to a doctor.
If there are lessons to be drawn from the still tentative successes here, they are that small projects often work best, that the consent and participation of local people are essential and that even baby steps take years.

Father’s day 2018 is Sunday the 17th of June, so we’re only a couple of weeks off. In this post I’m sharing what I believe, as a Dad myself (hint hint ;-)) to be some of the best ideas for coffee gifts for coffee lovers, for Father’s day this year.
It was actually a coffee gift that prompted me to start coffeeblog in the first place! A few years ago, my wife and kids bought me a new stainless steel cafetiere for my birthday. I was starting to write a review about it on Amazon, and the review was getting quite long.
I was thinking about starting a blog anyway, but I wasn’t sure exactly what to focus on, and suddenly creating a blog about coffee became the obvious choice, and this review became the first ever post on coffeeblog.
Coffee Subscription for Father’s Day?
My first choice when it comes to a great Father’s day gift, would be a coffee subscription.
As you’ll know if you’ve read my best coffee subscriptions post, I have a few coffee subscriptions – I drink a lot of coffee and a coffee subscription is definitely something I would recommend as a great Father’s Day gift for 2018 for any coffee lover, given that there are quite a few great coffee subscriptions now.
The reason I think coffee subscriptions are so great isn’t just about keeping stocked up, although that’s one benefit of course, the best thing for me about subscriptions is discovery and variety. With coffee subscriptions, you get to try different coffees from different origins, different varietals and different processes, meaning that you get to discover a wide variety of different tasting coffees.
This is why my favourite coffee subscriptions are who they are, as they all deliver a variety of different coffees each time, rather than just a “supply” subscription whereby you would choose a coffee and just have the same one delivered each week or month.
Here’s a great Father’s day coffee gift offer for you, from one of my favourite coffee subscriptions!
Blue Coffee Box, one of my favourite coffee subscription firms, have a great offer on for Father’s day 2018, just for coffeeblog readers!
Blue Coffee Box are a multi-roaster subscription service, offering a discovery coffee subscription, delivering a box of three different coffees each month (or each fortnight, or every two months, depending on your choice) from different origins, different coffee varietals, different processes and different roasters, working with some of the UK’s best coffee roasters.
Here’s there Father’s day offer, for coffeeblog readers only:
Purchase a Blue Coffee Box subscription gift, and get £9 off – or – purchase any Blue Coffee Box bag gift (a single bag rather than a coffee subscription) and get £3 off.
For the subscription discount, just type or paste the code CB719 into the voucher box at checkout, or for the bag discount, use the code CB713 – at bluecoffeebox.com
There’s more…
If you’re buying a multi-month subscription (for three, six or twelve months), they will also send you (the person buying the gift) a free Blue Coffee Box bag of coffee worth £7.99! All you need to do is reply to the purchase confirmation email with your address for the free bag, and they’ll send it to you straight away.
Also, I had a word with the nice guys at Blue Coffee Box – and they’ve agreed that even if you’re buying a subscription for yourself (so, not selecting the gift option) they will still honour the free bag offer, just until Father’s day! So if you were thinking of going for a subscription, now would be a good time even if it’s not as a Father’s day gift.
Other Father’s Day Coffee Gift Ideas
Coffee Brewers
If the coffee lover you’re buying for, doesn’t own one of the following brewers, any one of these would make a great Father’s day gift – enabling dad to add another brewing method as a string to his bow when it comes to brewing coffee, at home or while out and about.
Aeropress, from £26.33 on Amazon
Aeropress. This is has become one of the most popular coffee brewers over the past few years, and it’s easy to see why.
Aeropress is faster and easier than more traditional home coffee brewing processes such as cafetiere & filter, and cleaning up is mega fast and easy (basically just firing the spent puck of coffee into the bin or compost, then giving it a rinse & a wipe).
Made by Aerobie (yes, the same people who make the famous flying ring), Aeropress makes a great coffee, either Espresso style, or Americano style coffee depending on how you want it, you basically just add less water if you want an Espresso style coffee. I say “style”, as it isn’t quite espresso, you don’t get the crema, but it’s not a million miles off, which is amazing for a coffee maker at under £30!
There are various different ways to use Aeropress, you don’t have to follow the instructions – in fact, there are national and international Aeropress championships, entered by Aeropress baristas each who have their own specific process for brewing the way they believe makes the very best Aeropress coffee.
Oomph Coffee Maker, on offer on Amazon for £34.75
The Oomph. The oomph is a great coffee maker, it works along similar lines to Aeropress in that you apply manual pressure, but it’s different to Aeropress, for a start given that it is a coffee brewer and travel cup in one.
I was initially interested in the Oomph based on it being a way to drink coffee similar to Aeropress on the go, but what amazed me about the Oomph, is the taste!
It makes an outstanding cup of coffee! As I wrote in my Oomph coffee maker review, the Oomph is my favourite brewer now for most of my coffees during the day in the week. I still use Aeropress from time to time, but more often than not I’ll use the Oomph, as I love the taste of the coffee it makes, and it keeps my coffee warm for ages.
V60 coffee maker, from £4.98
Hario V60. The V60 is a pourover drip filter coffee maker, it makes stunning filter coffee, and it’s mega inexpensive from under a fiver, and then around £5-6 for a hundred filters. You simply plop in the ground coffee, and then pour over (the process is known as pour-over) the water, until you have a cup of lovely clean (due to the paper filters) cup of filter coffee.
There’s a similar coffee maker which is also very popular, called the Kalita Wave, this has a different design, with a flat bottom, but it’s still a manual pour over filter coffee maker. I’m focusing more on the V60 as they’re better value for money, generally speaking.
There’s also Chemex, which is another great pourover filter coffee maker – which doubles as a coffee jug. Chemex has been around for a long time, and makes great coffee, but again – I’m featuring the Hario V60 in this post as I think it’s so good when it comes to value for money, and makes for a great inexpensive coffee gift idea father’s day.
Travel Cups/Mugs.
Keepcup, lots of varieties available on Amazon from £7.61.
With the looming take-away cups tax along the lines of the 5p plastic bag charge, buying dad a travel cup is a nice idea, if he doesn’t have one, or if he doesn’t have a decent one.
You see, there are travel cups, and then there are travel cups… Yes you can get very cheap travel cups from supermarkets which may seem like a bargain, but there are also really well performing and stylish travel cups such as keepcup and Bodum, which will keep dad’s brew hot for longer, and will perform better when it comes to not leaking, and not burning his fingers.
There’s also a really novel shaped travel mug called Goat Story, which is shaped like a Goat’s horn! ;-). I’ve got one of these, they sent me one a while ago to review, and despite the unusual look, it’s actually a brilliant travel mug, stays hot & is completely leak proof.
If your dad is the kind of bloke who wouldn’t want to stand out, then don’t get him this… however if he’s the kind of Dad who likes to be different, and you think he won’t be embarrassed drinking coffee from a Goat horn in public, then the Goat Story mug is a great idea for dad.
My wife uses her Bodum travel mug for her cup of tea when she goes to work in the morning, and she’s always amazed to find her brew is still hot hours later. She has this one.
Personalised Mugs.
Personalised Mugs, from about £6 on Amazon.
These are always a nice idea for any occasion, and generally speaking, if you go for a ready-made slogan type mug, like the one on tha left, you’ll pay six or seven quid or so, which makes them an inexpensive gift idea.
If you want to spend a little bit more though, and show that you’ve put a bit more thought into it, you can have your own text and/image printed onto a mug for dad, which I think is great. I still have a mug like this with a photo of my kids on when they were toddlers, I’ve had that mug for probably 10 years now.
Is there a photo of the kids or grandkids that you could have printed onto a mug that would make him smile? Or maybe Dad/Grandad has a nickname or a special saying, or something else that you could have printed onto a coffee mug which would make this a particularly meaningful gift?
You can get mugs like this on Amazon, there are also websites such as Photoimageart and Photobox who produce personalised mugs, personalised travel mugs, personalised tea towels, cushions, canvas prints, aprons & all sorts, which I think make for great alternative Father’s day gifts to “off the shelf” gifts.
There we go, lots of Father’s day coffee gift ideas for coffee loving Dad’s this year :-).
If you were to ask me what I would prefer from the above, as a Dad who loves coffee, then definitely it would be the coffee subscription – although I probably have enough for now ;-). Don’t forget, if you decide to go for the Blue Coffe Box subscription offer, the website is Bluecoffeebox.com, and the code for the box is CB719 or for the bag discount, use the code CB713.
Life is like a box of chocolates, so follow me on Twitter, and that’s all I have to say about that.

Pyramids of Güimar.
In 1969 and 1970, Heyerdahl built two boats from papyrus and attempted to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Morocco in Africa. Based on drawings and models from ancient Egypt, the first boat, named Ra (after the Egyptian Sun god), was constructed by boat builders from Lake Chad using papyrus reed obtained from Lake Tana in Ethiopia and launched into the Atlantic Ocean from the coast of Morocco. The Ra crew included Thor Heyerdahl (Norway), Norman Baker (USA), Carlo Mauri (Italy), Yuri Senkevich (USSR), Santiago Genoves (Mexico), Georges Sourial (Egypt), Abdullah Djibrine (Chad). After a number of weeks, Ra took on water after its crew made modifications to the vessel that caused it to sag and break apart. The ship was abandoned and the following year, another similar vessel, Ra II, was built of totora by Demetrio, Juan and Jose Limachi from Lake Titicaca in Bolivia and likewise set sail across the Atlantic from Morocco, this time with great success. The crew was mostly the same, only Djibrine had been replaced by Japanese Kei Ohara and Madani Ait Ouhanni (from Morocco). The boat reached Barbados, thus demonstrating that mariners could have dealt with trans-Atlantic voyages by sailing with the Canary Current.

The Registan was the heart of the ancient Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The name Registan (ریگستان) means "Sandy place" in Persian.
The Registan was a place of public executions, where also people gathered to hear royal proclamations, heralded by blasts on enormous copper pipes called dzharchis.
The three madrasahs of the Registan are: Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1417–1420), the Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619–1636) and the Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1646–1660). Madrasah is an Arabic term meaning a Muslim clergy academy.
The Ulugh Beg Madrasah has its imposing portal with lancet arch facing the square. The corners are flanked by the high well-proportioned minarets. Mosaic panel over the entrance arch is decorated by geometrical stylized ornaments. The square-shaped courtyard includes a mosque, lecture rooms and is fringed by the dormitory cells in which students lived. There are deep galleries along the axes. Originally the Ulugh Beg Madrasah was a two-storied building with four domed darskhonas (lecture room) at the corners. The madrasah was one of the best clergy universities of the whole Moslem Orient of the 15th century. Abdurakhman Djami, a prominent poet, scientist and philosopher studied there. Ulugh Beg himself gave lectures there. During Ulugbek's government the Madrasah was a centre of secular science. In the 17th century the ruler of Samarkand Yalangtush Bakhodur ordered the construction of the Sher-Dor and Tillya-Kori madrasahs. The Sher-Dor (Having Tigers) Madrasah was designed by architect Abdujabor. The decoration of the madrasah is not as refined as that on the 15th century - "golden age" of Samarkand architecture. Anyway, the harmony of large and small rooms, exquisite mosaic decor, monumentality and efficient symmetry - all these put the structure among the best architectural monuments of Samarkand.
Ten years later the Tilya-Kori Madrasah was built, the name means "Gilded". It was not only the place of training students, but also it played the role of grand mosque. It has two-storied main facade, vast courtyard fringed by dormitory cells with four galleries along axes. Mosque building (see picture 6) is situated in the western section of the courtyard. The main hall of the mosque is abundantly gilded.
To the east of Tilya-Kori Madrasah the mausoleum of Shaybanids (16 century) is located (see picture). The real founder of Shaybanid power was Muhammad Shaybani - grandson of Abu'l Khair. In 1500, with the backing of the Chaghataite Khanate, then based in Tashkent (Uzbekistan), Muhammad Shaybani has conquered Samarkand and Bukhara from their last Timurid rulers. The founder of the dynasty then turned on his benefactors and in 1503 took Tashkent. He captured Khiva in 1506 and in 1507 he swooped down on Merv (Turkmenistan), eastern Persia, and western Afghanistan. The Shaybanids stopped the advance of the Safavids, who in 1502 had defeated the Akkoyunlu (Iran). Muhammad Shaybani was a leader of nomadic Uzbeks. During the ensuing years they substantially settled down in oases of Central Asia. The Uzbek invasion of 15 c. was the last component of the today's Uzbek nation ethnogeny.
The ancient trading dome Chorsu is situated right behind the Sher-Dor. Now it is well restored. The existence of the trading dome at this place confirms the information that Registan was medieval Samarkand's commercial center and the plaza was probably a wall to wall market. During the Soviet era, the site was restored, which included digging down 3 meters to its original level to expose the buildings' full height.

youtube.com/FashionTV - Xuan Thu Nguyen's show at Paris Couture Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2011/2012 is a little bit princess, a little bit chaos. Some models wear demure bandage dresses with belts while others where bright fringed numbers and wild hair. Media publications have said that the Vietnamese designers that make up the Xuan Thu Nguyen's label are looking for the modern in an old fashion world, mixing innovation with traditions of the past in their tailoring. Pleating of materials like silk and organza were common place, and colors on the old world dresses were off-white, pale pink, and cream. Then a cacophony of madness seemed to hit when other models showed off bright colors like orange and canary yellow which were only embellished by the massive amount of colors in their wild hair and something that looked remarkably like tattered birds nests in their updos. Some models wore masks on their faces, as if they were heading to a debonair masquerade ball.
