The Vulturine Guineafowl (Acryllium vulturinum) is the largest and most spectacular of the guineafowl bird family. It is a resident breeder in northeast Africa, from southern Ethiopia through Kenya and just into northern Tanzania.
It breeds in dry and open habitats with scattered bushes and trees, such as savannah or grassland. It lays its usually 4-8 cream-coloured eggs in a well-hidden grass-lined scrape.
although all other guineafowl have unfeathered heads, this species looks particularly like a vulture because of the long bare neck and head.
The slim neck projects from a cape of long, glossy, blue and white hackles. The breast is cobalt blue, and the rest of the body plumage is black, finely spangled with white.
The sexes are similar, although the female is usually slightly smaller than the male and with smaller tarsal spurs. Young birds are mainly grey-brown, with a duller blue breast and short hackles.
Vulturine Guineafowl is a gregarious species, forming flocks outside the breeding season typically of about 25 birds. This species' food is seeds and small invertebrates. This guineafowl is terrestrial, and will run rather than fly when alarmed. Despite the open habitat, it tends to keep to cover, and roosts in trees. It makes loud chink-chink-chink-chink-chink calls.
A Marbled Fritillary in full glory, and the best catch of my holiday I think.
Had a lot of trouble to get an accurate ID, but thanks to Martijn I got the right one as he commented one my previous post of this butterfly.

Romance isn't any more what it used to be...
Romantik ist auch nicht mehr das, was es früher mal war!
Le romantisme n'est plus ce qu'il était au paravent!

I had to be quick, because it struck me how this elderly couple sat there, in front of the most beautiful imaginable sunset and each of them looked in a different direction!
Had I taken my hazardous shot in a better quality, you'd see the lake and sky much darker than they seem on this photo but then you wouldn't be ablt to discern the two heads, turned into different directions! Those two obviously see the world from very different angles and might return home with the woman saying: 'Oh darling, wasn't that just the most magic sunset ever', whereas her husband might add: 'I don't know but have you seen that crazy couple in shorts and roller skates in the middle of February?'
Have all a very Happy Sunday!

For the last six month I have been work on creating photos, for a new museum here in Denmark. It's an old viking castle, dated back to around 900 A.D.
I had two tasks. One was to make photos that had an atmosphere like they where made in viking age. that was mainly forest, lakes and coast lines. They used those in the app, on the website www.vikingeborgen.dk/ and as background on the portraits of the archaeologist - which my brother made - and some of the information boards on the site.
My second task was to capture eight historical defense buildings in Denmark, And todays photo of "Trekroner Fort" was one of them. Those photo are placed on the the path, from the entrance down to the actual viking castle. with the newest building first - which is Stevns Fort - and the oldest last - which is the Valdemars Wall.
Here are a few photos I made on the opening day. the official opening was done by the queen of Denmark.
[gallery type="rectangular" size="medium" ids="26374,26375,26376,26377,26378,26379,26380,26381,26382,26383"]
Thanks to SRApix www.flickr.com/photos/srapix/5529172746 for allowing me to use her photo as reference and inspiration for this.
My anniversary present to Mike. Its full of symbolisim : Penguins are separated for long periods of time and have to 'sing' to find their partners,so these two seperate penguins tell mine and Mikes story :)
They are similar but not identical, the different stars symbolise the fact that we were on different countries, the background is 'icey' as we were lost, but our good hearts found each other again ....ahhhhh :)
Made with beads of various sizes, mille, ceramic stars and glass balls. You cant tell with this shot but the glass beads are coated with watered down gel meduim mixed with iridescent dust. Each is 21 x 30 cms.

Situated in the Melbourne Docklands lies the South side of the Victoria Harbour. This particular photo was taken from my balcony and was my 5th attempt to capture the entire viewable angle of this approx. 155 degree view during twilight. Obviously you haven't seen the first 4 failed attempts! *hehe*
You see the edges of two other residential buildings bordering left and right of the image. In the centre you have new illuminated ANZ Headquarters, below it the Yarra's Edge Marina. The funky looking illuminated Webb-Bridge (a artistic and photogenic highlight) is found next to the boat quays to the right of the frame. Behind it you can see the West end of the Melbourne Central Business District . Surrounding all the describe above is the U-shaped Promenade walk which leads towards the Bolte Bridge, which you can find to the left of this photograph.
History:
Two interesting facts that I wasn't aware of till now. I moved here in mid-2007 and there is 1000's of apartments among the residential towers in the docklands. But in 2006 there was not even 4,000 counted people during census. Docklands acquired his name during the 1880's when it was used for docks, industry and railway infrastructure. Due to the containerisation of shipping traffic the need for the docks disappeared and the area fell into disrepair in the 1980s. This part of Melbourne became quite the wasteland before it was re-developed in prime waterfront properties both for commercial and residential purposes.
Technique:
This is a 17-Shot Panorama/ Vertorama (actually i'm not sure what it is now? Maybe a Multirama?). The picture time varied between 13-15 seconds and I had to play with two focal lengths 17 and 20mm due to the changing sky and speed of change of colors after sunset. The entire sequence of pictures took over 12minutes! Aperture was set at 11 and my Canon 7D body was mounted to a Manfrotto tripod.
Print:
In total this picture has 92.1 Megapixel (excl. frame) and is over 72 Megabytes in compressed JPEG filesize. Maximum printsize is 4.2m x 3.5m at 72DPI.

I wanted to take a shot for my one-a-day photo challenge and I was also aware that I still needed to submit a shot for the weekly photo assignment which this week is themed: Water of life.
I certainly cannot claim that this is an original shot. It is something that I have seen numerous times on Flickr and elsewhere and something I have always wanted to attempt myself. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to give it a try.
We all know that water is essential for life and is constantly moving around us as part of the water cycle by evaporation and precipitation (...plus a few more steps I'm sure!). This whole notion is summed up for me perfectly when seeing a single drop of water joining a waterbody.
For this shot I had a plastic paint container filled with water and a bag above it with some water plus a tiny hole in it to provide consistent drops. I had a flash gun borrowed from a friend which I had attached to a the camera as I don't have the equipment to trigger it remotely. I also had a box covered with some silver foil behind the tray with the flash directed to bounce off of the foil as much as possible. Then it was just a matter of getting the focus and timing zeroed in. I got a few shots which I liked, but this was my favourite of the bunch.
EDIT:
I was absolutely delighted to discover that this is my first photo to be featured in Explore for May 2nd, so thank you to everybody for your kind words and favourites! I appreciate all of your feedback! :)

Today's 365 isn't my face (surprise!) - it's from a photoshoot I did with the awesomely musically talented Christian (and his mum Fiona and friends Michael and Amy). Was a BUCKETLOAD of fun to do - we basically went nuts with a few flashes, a guitar and some santa costumes amongst a busy Hosier Lane. We got many strange looks (I get them by default so nothing new), shared many laughs (this photo is one of the rare moments Christian wasn't cracking up) and in the end learned the true meaning of Christmas (made that last bit up).
Christian's a total legend on the classical guitar and has an album coming out soon; I'll link to it later on so watch this space.
Thanks Christian, Fiona, Michael, Amy and the random people who stopped and gawked for one of the best days I've had in a long long time (Y)
Barbara, 52, has been working the same quiet industrial street of Hunts Point for over thirty years. She has been arrested over 170 times, all for prostitution, the most recent time a month ago. As part of her last jail sentence she must meet weekly with a counselor. Of that Barbara says, "She is a very sweet woman, and she means well, but she keeps asking me why I am doing this and why don't I want to do something different. I tell her, I am a 52-year-old hooker who's been out on the streets since I was twenty. My parents were loving. I don't do drugs. I got many loving children. Folks watch out for me. This is what I like to do! I am relaxed out here."
Since the the NY Times article on her she has been contacted by many journalists, including a European station proposing a reality show. She's demure about the recent attention. "Honey, I have seen it all. Ain't no reason to get yourself all excited or all scared."

This shot of the geometric roof structure over the atrium is another upload from last months London Flickr Group photowalk. Our afternoon started with an exclusive tour of the Fumihiko Maki designed Aga Khan Centre at Kings Cross.
This month's photowalk has now been confirmed for June 28th, more details here : www.flickr.com/groups/londonflickrgroup/discuss/721577219...
These free photowalks are usually about every 4-6 weeks so keep an eye on the group for details of upcoming events.
From the Aga Khan's website, "The Aga Khan Centre is a place of education, knowledge, cultural exchange and insight into Muslim civilisations. The building is the UK home for three organisations founded by His Late Highness Aga Khan IV, the hereditary spiritual leader of the Shi‘a Ismaili Muslims.
This building is designed to represent the values of openness, dialogue and respect for different viewpoints (pluralism). The architecture incorporates a collection of gardens, courtyards and terraces that provides an insight into the diversity and influence of Islamic landscape design around the world and through history.
The building was designed by Fumihiko Maki, one of Japan’s most distinguished contemporary architects. The Centre is primarily designed for an academic community, with places for students, scholars and staff to share ideas and work together alongside flexible teaching spaces and quiet research areas."

Merci de lire les explications en début d'album / Please read the explanations at the beginning of the set

There Are Obsessions
A poem by Peter S. Quinn
There are obsessions for every ride
Loneliness out there to stay
Shadows of night they sometimes hide
Into the morning and the day
Feelings of sickness everywhere go
Letting you down from the start
Something that only you know
Breaking and piercing your heart
Blossoms of cold in each fight
Nothing will give there any dream
Only the dark in the hour’s fright
With each their uncertainty beam
Oceans and waves that everything lacks
Believing nothing from its cast
Huge spaces of emptiness and blacks
All with their time to low and adjust
We are there standing in our wishing
Anywhere going for even some more
Part of us knowing some dreams missing
Nobody is forever of anything sure
Adapting footsteps through the streets
Of nobody's ways in a cruel world
Each of our emotion opposition meets
Scattering thoughts - dreams unfurled

I love voyaging forth into nature to contemplate poetry, physics, the golden ratio, and the Tao te Ching! What's your favorite epic poetry reflecting epic landscapes? I recently finished a book titled Epic Poetry for Epic Landscape Photographers:
www.facebook.com/Epic-Poetry-for-Epic-Landscape-Photograp...
Did you know that John Muir, Thoreau, and Emerson all loved epic poetry and poets including Shakespeare, Milton, Homer, and Robert Burns?
I recently finished my fourth book on Light Time Dimension Theory, much of which was inspired by an autumn trip to Zion!
www.facebook.com/lightimedimensiontheory/
Via its simple principle of a fourth expanding dimension, LTD Theory provides a unifying, foundational *physical* model underlying relativity, quantum mechanics, time and all its arrows and asymmetries, and the second law of thermodynamics. The detailed diagrams demonstrate that the great mysteries of quantum mechanical nonlocality, entanglement, and probability naturally arise from the very same principle that fosters relativity alongside light's constant velocity, the equivalence of mass and energy, and time dilation.

Taken with an iPhone 3GS
-----------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: (Sept. 25, 2010)
This picture was one of my iPhone shots used in the Italian interview of me in ZOE MAGAZINE.
The PDF of the magazine can be found here:
www.youblisher.com/p/38177-Zoe-Magazine-27/
But since it's in Italian, I offer the original answers I gave in English below (and Italians want to compare the two and see what was cut or lost in translation?):
-----------------------------------------------------
How/when/why did you start taking pictures of strangers?
It really only started in the last year or two. I had gotten my boyfriend an iPhone for his birthday in mid-2008, and he immediately started taking streetshots with it. He started posting on Flickr, and has since gone on to become one of the premiere iPhonegraphers of the world. Well in order to NOT get frustrated by all of his picture-taking while we were outside, I decided to start taking shots with my own iPhone too, and created my own Flickr account in 2009. From there, I discovered I really liked the “stealthiness” of the iPhone, and the amazing shots of people you were able to get when they had no idea you were taking their picture. I got hooked! And haven’t stopped since...
Could you tell me a little story of what happened after you took a picture? I don't know...either someone asked you to have it sent via email, or someone who didn't want to be in the picture?
Well to tell you the truth, most people have no idea that I am taking their picture! And if they do, they have not approached me about sending it to them or deleting it.
However, there are many times when someone has seen a picture of mine, and recognized someone they know in it. One example is one of my “Off Duty Bunnies”. A friend of the guy in the bunny suit put me in contact with him, and he liked his portrait so much that he made it his Facebook profile picture for a while.
I have also unknowingly taken pictures of people who I have later learned are semi-famous, including a porn star in one, a famous photographer’s boyfriend in another, and a reality TV star in one of my most well-known pics (the White Rabbit in this picture is apparently Austin Scarlett — a contestant on the first season of Project Runway).
There are also stories I get WHILE I’m taking someone’s picture, like “The Woman and The Beagle” — she had no idea I was taking her picture, but decided to tell me about her dog, and how she was sheltering him from the rain outside, because she was fearful of him ever getting sick and dying like her previous dog. It was a very touching story that added to the already tender portrait of the two of them.
I guess NY city seems like the perfect spot to shoot interesting pictures — its like an open air theater stage. What do you like of NY, visually speaking?
What’s NOT to love about New York? It has everything! But beyond the amazing architecture, and the iconic sites that everyone loves to visit, the most amazing visual aspect of NYC is its people. There’s just no other city in the world that’s as culturally diverse, and has as many “characters” as The Big Apple. This is the best city for people-watching, and for people-picture-taking!
4. I've read that you work for DC comics, and I love the way you always write little stories together with pictures you post. How do these two worlds feed each other?
Well comics is a very visual medium of storytelling, just like photography — so the two have quite a lot in common, as you can imagine. As you mentioned, sometimes I like to make up stories for the people that I have photographed (My "NY Stories" set). I think it’s quite natural to see an interesting stranger, and wonder “What must their life be like?” Comics can tell ANY type of story (not just super-heroes), and there’s a whole genre that’s more “slice of life”-type stories. That’s how I see some of my photos sometimes...as these small moments of people’s lives, forever captured on film and given importance. They are almost like single-panel comics, in a way.
I definitely think my love of the comics medium has influenced the way I’ve taken photographs. It’s made me think in a more visual way, which makes me spot moments that most people might not pay attention to, and forces me to frame my shots in the best way that I can.
I do think that "framing" and the "moment" are the most important things in a picture. What do you think?
I absolutely agree! And I’ll add in “subject” as well.
I’m glad you bring this up, because the majority of my photographs are taken with an Apple iPhone — and there are many people out there who don’t believe the iPhone is capable of taking a good picture simply because of the low megapixel count. These are people who are so fixated on image quality and sharpness, and not the actual content of the photo. There are so many people who will be impressed with photos of a flower, simply because it’s high-resolution and shows lots of fine detail. That’s great and all, but to me the most important thing is the subject and the moment.
The great thing about the iPhone (or cell phone cameras in general) is that you can take a shot quickly and capture “the moment” before it’s vanished. Honestly, if I was trying to use a DSLR for my pictures, by the time I took it out and got it prepared to take a photo, the “moment” would already be long gone. So I will happily take a fantastic decisive moment image from an iPhone that might not be the best quality, over a super high-res image of a boring flower any day. But that’s me....
iPhone — and in general cell phones photography — are the new thing. What differences do you see between this and traditional photography? I mean the pluses vs. the minuses of the two worlds.
The advantages of cell phone photography are obvious: its ease of use, and the immediacy of it. It’s now quicker than ever to not only take a picture, but to share it with the rest of the world. That’s a big change from the old days of film, where it would be a long time before you even knew whether the shot was good or not, and even longer before it could be seen by other people in any capacity. Even with DSLR’s, it’s not as easy to take a quick snapshot — and then you have to download it to your computer before it can be sent anywhere else. With most smart phones like an iPhone, the ability to snap and share a picture (on Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, or any website) can be instantaneous.
That’s also one of the drawbacks, though. Just about ANYONE can feel like they are a photographer now — but at the end of the day you still need to have an “eye” for strong subjects and interesting composition. With the iPhone in particular, there are many apps that can make any photo look semi-interesting in the way it is processed. However...processing alone does not “make” a picture good. The image still needs to be strong by itself, BEFORE processing, to really be counted as true photography. You have no idea how many times I’ve seen someone take a picture of something mundane, like a chair, and then use an iPhone app to process it and attempt to make it look interesting. It might come out with some pretty colors or textures after the app processing...but it’s still just a boring picture of a chair. There’s nothing very original or exciting about that.
Do you process your pics after you take them, or do you use them just as they come out?
I process many of the pics I take in some way or another. Sometimes it’s just a minor tweak (I used to use the online program Picnik.com for this and do it on my computer), while other times it’s a more specific iPhone app that I’m using for a stronger effect, and it’s done ALL on my iPhone. And again, I make sure I’m quite happy with the photo in its rawest form FIRST before processing it any further. The original iPhone’s picture quality was quite limited, so tweaking the contrast or whatever was almost mandatory. With the introduction of the iPhone 3GS, there was the ability to “tap to focus” which helped things a bit. Now with the upcoming iPhone 4, there are even more improvements — so post-processing may become less and less necessary. However...the charm of some of these iPhone apps IS the very fact that they CAN make pictures look like just about anything...from mimicking the look of Polaroid film, to simulating the effects of a toy camera, to making an image look like specific analog film — the potential is limitless!
I suppose there might be a day when I want to use a pic that’s “straight from the regular camera” with nothing else done to it. But for now...it’s too much fun to process them in some way or another...
Which is the number one rule for street photography? To do it "in your face" style? Or ninja/hidden style?
I could never truly be “in your face” about it — I’m always trying to be as sneaky as possible. I think it’s a bit rude to get right into someone’s face, and would hate it if someone else took a photo of me that way. Having said that...I know a LOT of people who take photos this way, and the results can be quite impressive sometimes. I guess it depends on how comfortable you are with invading someone else’s personal space. Personally, I think it’s possible to get really amazing street photos without anyone ever knowing — ESPECIALLY with a cell phone camera. That’s what makes it so great. You can get quite close to a subject and have them in their natural, comfortable state. As soon as you make someone aware that they are getting their picture taken, it can change the mood of your image dramatically. Again...sometimes that can work for great effect. I have a set myself called “They See Me”, where people seem to be looking right at me. Whether they actually knew their picture was being taken or not is up for debate (not one of them ever said anything to me, nor seemed to care if they knew), but the fact that they are making eye contact makes for a compelling image sometimes.
As for other rules of street photography...I always say to concentrate more on an interesting subject rather than trying to get the perfect composition. The way your final image is laid out WILL be important, of course — but the most important thing is always the subject. If you can get a person at the right “moment,” doing something very interesting, or making a dramatic expression, then it can make for a really powerful image — and sometimes “not perfect” compositions can be a little more forgiven in that case.

The second item is an off-the-shoulder floral A-line dress. It's also no secret I love colourful floral patterns. And I do love dresses that show off the shoulders!
Sure, I like short dresses and skirts, but I also love the elegance that a midi-length dresses provides. Paired with some white heels.. and off to a garden party it is! ;-)

Oh no, I see
a spiderweb is tangled up with me
and I lost my head
and thought of all the stupid things I'd said
oh no, what's this?
a spiderweb and I'm caught in the middle
so I turned to run
and thought of all the stupid things I'd done
and I never meant to cause you trouble
and I never never meant to do your wrong
ah, well if I ever caused you trouble
oh no I never meant to do you harm
oh no, I see
a spiderweb and it's me in the middle
so I twist and turn
but here am I in my little bubble
singing and I never meant to cause you trouble
and I never meant to do you wrong
ah, well if I ever caused you trouble
oh no I never meant to do you harm
they spun a web for me
they spun a web for me
they spun a web for me
