Strobist info: Nikon SB-910 fired bare at ceiling at 1/8th (triggered with YongNuo trigger). YN568EX 1/2 power bare fired pretty much from where the camera is (slightly lower).
I feel good uploading this. Not because I think the photo is great or anything (it's ok-to-good), but because I've felt in a bit of a creative rut over the last week. Yesterday was the first photo in a while I am super happy with. So today I was feeling pretty pumped about photography and life in general :)
I forgot to say, 6 days ago I challenged myself to not take a photo in my apartment for 2 weeks. It's been lots of fun so far, though challenging since I can't take all my studio gear (though I did take a few photos in my apartment stairwell). Challenges are good ^_^

"Roast Pork Loin with a Roasted Shallot, Tomato and Rosemary Relish"
Best viewed large.
Roast about six large shallots in a 400F oven for about 25 minutes until soft. Let cool and chop. Or...do like I did and buy chopped shallots in a jar. They can be found in the produce department of some grocery store chains. Purists may get "that look", but work in a kitchen 8-12 hours a day and tell me you want to labor over dinner at home.
Roast the pork loin. My favorite way of doing this is to place the pork loin in a sprayed baking dish, and add equal parts water and white wine, until the liquid is about a third to half way up the side of the loin. This will keep the pork very juicy. Sprinkle the top of the pork loin with salt & pepper, and fresh or dried thyme. Bake at 400F until done. The thickness of your pork loin will determine how long it takes. You want a themometer to read 160F when inserted half way into the pork loin. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for a few minutes. This will "set" the juices inside.
Meanwhile, make the relish. Chop four roma (plum) tomaotes. Mince two teaspoons fresh rosemary, or one teaspoon dried. Make a mixture of one tablespoon balsamic vinegar, one tablespoon honey, and add the chopped tomatoes and shallot. Chop 1/3 cup flat leaf Italian parsley, and add to the relish along with a 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Ideally, you should make the relish a few hours to a day ahead, and allow the flavors to intensify in the fridge.
Slice the pork loin, and top with the relish. If you used fresh rosemary, you could garnish with a rosemary sprig.
You could also use boneless pork loin chops for this dish. If you do not like heat, omit the cayenne pepper.
A note on the balsamic vinegar. If you use the normal colored balsamic vinegar, it will darken the shallots and tomaotes. If you prefer the colors of the relish to remain bright, use white balsamic vinegar instead.
And for the photography fanatics, it only took me 24 of these to realize that I have been centering my dishes on the plate, but taking the photos at an angle. This makes the front of the plate look expansive with no room at the back. I'll get better at this!

I know, you thought the next shot I was going to post was going to be The Subway. Psyc!
Actually, my Subway shot is still rendering...I took a massive multi-row pano of it with a 100mm lens and the shots are all loaded up on a G5 with 16gb of RAM and that thing has been crunching those images for nearly 6 hours...I don't see any smoke yet so I think it's just very busy stitching. I hope.
Anway, in the meantime I thought I'd post one of my favorite shots from my time in Colorado -- Old Crystal Mill. This place is very remote, requiring a 4x4 type vehicle to access. What an amazing landscape, I thouroughly enjoyed my time at Crystal Mill. I arrived in the early morning on a one-way jeep drop-off (even though I knew afternoon would provide the best light) and spend the entire day scouting around it, eating lunch and just relaxing. It was awesome.
So the afternoon light did not disapoint and I shot Crystal Mill from every angle imaginable, settling on this classic vantage point. With the last of the blue sky almost out of sight I realized it was about time to leave. Since I'd only paid for a one-way jeep ride I had a 7 mile hike ahead of me to get back to the MoHo (aka Motorhome).
Suddenly, I turn to a familiar face, Mike Jones. Now I have to say, of all the times I've shot with Mike I never really felt "glad" to see him, though he is a kick in the pants, however this time I was GLAD.
Very glad.
My first words were "Mike, did you drive your truck here?!" Not "Oh hey Mike, good to see you..." or "Mike, how funny to run into you WAY out here...".
No. My first words were a plea of "can-I-get-a-ride-out-with-you so I don't have to hike 7 miles over rocky terrain..." camouflaged with "If you've got room in your truck it would be fun to catchup..."
He didn't buy it and my look of desperation likely was enough...he said "sure".
I did give him $20 and a big thanks at the other end before we headed off in different directions.

One of the rollerbladers last night in the Grand Palais, doing a grind on a metallic railing . No special effects here, this is straight out of the camera :-)
If you look closely (easier with large size), you can see the 2 dark silhouettes of the skater still jumping onto the rail a moment before, and sliding a moment after. I'm not sure what caused this, might be a combination of my own flash and someone's else on the other side I think ?
