La torre de guaita
L'arquitectura defensiva de l'edat moderna es caracteritza per edificacions de poca projecció en alçat i n'és poc usual la construcció de torres o altres elements que sobresurtin del parapet. Tanmateix, el Castell de Montjuïc destaca per la presència d'aquesta torre, una reminiscència de la primera construcció defensiva al cim de la muntanya, documentada ja l'any 1073. Es tractava d'una torre de guaita en què els vigies senyalitzaven l'arribada de les naus per mitjà d'un sistema de veles durant el dia i de focs durant la nit. Aquella antiga torre va ser reformada i reconstruïda en diverses ocasions, i quan l'enginyer militar Juan Martí Cermeño dissenyà la nova fortalesa de Montjuïc, construí de nou una torre de senyals durant la dècada de 1770. Aquesta s'adequà a la nova configuració estructural del Castell i, en conseqüència, no presentava una orientació adient per al càlcul de l'hora solar. Per aquest motiu es decidí dotar l'estructura de dos rellotges solars. L'un orientat a Llevant, dóna l'hora del matí, l'altre, orientat a ponent, dóna l'hora de la tarda.
Entre 1792 i 1793 l'astrònom francès Pierre Méchain va utilitzar aquesta torre per marcar les coordenades geogràfiques de Barcelona i hi va establir el punt geodèsic que serví per amidar l'arc del meridià de Dunkerque. Les dimensions d'aquest arc que uneix Barcelona, Paris i Dunkerque, serviren de base per calcular la mesura del metre, fonament de l'actual sistema mètric decimal.
Des d'aquesta torre l'astrònom Pierre Méchain durant els anys 1792-1793 establí les coordenades de Barcelona i la triangulació per al mesurament de l'arc de meridià que serví de base del sistema mètric decimal.

Se trataba de una torre de vigilancia en el que los vigías señalizaban la llegada de las naves por medio de un sistema de velas durante el día y de fuegos durante la noche. Aquella antigua torre fue reformada y reconstruida en varias ocasiones, y cuando el ingeniero militar Juan Martín Cermeño diseñó la nueva fortaleza de Montjuïc, construyó de nuevo una torre de señales durante la década de 1770. Esta se adecuó a la nueva configuración estructural del Castillo y, en consecuencia, no presentaba una orientación adecuada para el cálculo de la hora solar. Por este motivo se decidió dotar la estructura de dos relojes solares. El uno orientado a Levante, da la hora de la mañana, el otro, orientado a poniente, da la hora de la tarde.
Entre 1792 y 1793 el astrónomo francés Pierre Méchain utilizar esta torre para marcar las coordenadas geográficas de Barcelona y estableció el punto geodésico que sirvió para medir el arco del meridiano de Dunkerque. I tried to start my day early. As I have to catch the bus and train, it takes me a fair while to get to places I haven't been before, and then you have to walk. I wasn't taken witht the picture in the book, but mine aren't very good either. It was better than any of the pictures, and the description, for once, explains why there were metal plates all around these 'termites' nests'.
The thing I enjoy the most about this festival is that it does tie into the local people's feelings about the land and water. It also took me to some quite beautiful places that were a bit off the beaten track. Locals were out and about doing the same, though most of them had cars.
The third advantage were the stamps! Even if the exhibition was covered in snow, I wanted my stamp ;)

Shatterproof are a group of people, some with special needs , that work to produce original material in many mediums including Drama, Dance and Film.
We have been performing since 1986, including works commissioned by Leeds City Council to celebrate 25 years of carers for special needs people in Leeds.
We are open to anyone regardless of age, background or ability. This makes us a very diverse but very dynamic theatre company.
Shatterproof has a growing reputation for providing access to the Performing Arts for those people who have been denied access elsewhere.
Whatever your ability you will be welcome to join our friendly group which is dedicated to working towards a common goal. At the same time we aim to challenge the myths and prejudice that exist around us.
Shatterproof always performs original material which is specially written for us.This enables us to create roles to suit your acting talents and level of commitment.
So, as long as you are over the age of 16 and have an interest in performance then we are the group for you.. Shatterproof is made up of people of all abilities and if you are worried about learning lines, don’t, all our performances are unscripted !
Our sessions are held every Monday at The Carriageworks Theatre, Millennium Square
in the centre of Leeds. Our sessions run from 7.30 to 9.30. We do not close during holiday periods.
Our sessions include improvisation, mime,stage technique, voice work and movement.
There is also a big helping of fun exercises designed to make you feel part of the teamand, hopefully, make your evening worth while.

Shatterproof may still be the place for you. “Backstage” people play a major role in our work.

3 March 2016, Victoria Falls – International food standards are pivotal in enhancing commercialisation of agriculture and improving a country’s food exports. A country can boost the growth of the agro-processing sector by formulating policies that ensure adherence to international food standards. Additionally, effective food safety and quality management systems are essential not only for safeguarding the health and well-being of people but also for fostering economic development and improving livelihoods.
Representatives from Lesotho, Swaziland and Zimbabwe met in Victoria Falls (29 February – 1 March), to share country experiences and look at ways of enhancing policy formulation and adherence to international food standards. Through an FAO funded project, the Institutions’ capacities in the three countries have been developed over a one year period, to assist the three SADC countries make better use Codex standards to increase inter-regional trade and safeguard the health of their populations.
