On Black really is better large
Decided to go to a different site to see if I could photograph some Linnets, no Linnets
but there were some Skylarks. So I decided it would be great to capture them doing their Song flight. Hundred odd shots two hours , and a series of colourful metaphors later, Kay managed to persuade the gibbering foaming at the mouth photographer, that it was time to leave. This way maddness lies !!!
Overview
The skylark is a small brown bird, somewhat larger than a sparrow but smaller than a starling. It is streaky brown with a small crest, which can be raised when the bird is excited or alarmed, and a white-sided tail. The wings also have a white rear edge, visible in flight. It is renowned for its display flight, vertically up in the air. Its recent and dramatic population declines make it a Red List species.
Where to see them
Found everywhere in the UK. Likes open countryside, from lowland farmland to upland moorland. Often inconspicuous on the ground, it is easy to see when in its distinctive song flight.

Typical Cliched View of Big Ben and the London Underground Sign shot the day I bought the Fish Eye Lens.
The highlights were blown on Big Ben and I needed to test Lightroom's ability to recover details . . . well, that's my excuse anyway!
I haven't got to grips with Lightroom's handling of colors (far too many sliders controlling color) so the ones I've processed don't "pop" as usual.
I am also looking for a preset that calibrates my 20D and 5D for Lightroom; I recall that I had to do this with RawShooter Premium as well before I got the colors I liked.

This is a stacked version of "Thunderstruck" with other photos taken before and after the original photo. I combined them in Photoshop CS4 using a Star Trails action. Final processing done in Lightroom 2.
Another example of the great power of lightning in the mountains in Colorado. This storm was parked over Gunnison, CO on the night of September 12th. I was traveling from Creede, CO back to Gunnison, when near the Powderhorn Guest Ranches, I saw the lightning lighting up the dark night sky. Surprisingly, this was taken around 8:10pm. Surprisingly dark for that night, oh well the days are definitely getting shorted as fall approaches.

Linden
Linden is the least populated town in the Blue Mountains served by its own Railway Station. Linden does however offer some fascinating history.
Just off the Great Western Highway within the bush you can find the ruins of ‘Weemala’ which was built in 1881. Unfortunately this building was destroyed by the 1968 bush fires which swept out of control through the Blue Mountains. Probably of more importance than Weemala is Linden Lodge after which the town is named and which is still standing.
It was raining and mist rising from the wet valleys, but a lovely view all the same! The setting sun peeking through just briefly to add a splash of colour and warmth.

My contribution is second row second column. As it was meant as a body text face, and I do not believe too much in typographical detail anyway, It has a clear rhythm, supported by the seris. I show a text sample: left part without any kerning, right part (partim) with "optical kerning" in InDesign. More on the evolution to this typeface on this Flickr set. Maybe listen to some music at it .

Hello flickr, how have you been?
Thank you all for the well-wishes and emails during my absence. I'm fine, I've just been lazy. I needed to check out for a while, and I did just that. It's likely I won't be around as much in the near future: its winter and I seem to lose a lot of motivation. I have a hard time finding the beauty in things when I can't feel my toes and its dark @ 4:30pm. I'm still trying to shoot and I've got lots of archive stuff (see above) so I don't think I'll be going dormant. A photo a day seems like a bit of a stretch though.
Photographically speaking, 2009 was a pretty amazing year for me. Much of my success is due to the amazing network of contacts and friends I've developed here. Your commentary and criticism is fantastic, your work is inspiring. All of you drive me is some way to become a better storyteller through photos. You all rock, I really can't thank you enough.
So, Happy (much belated) New Year. I wish you the very best in 2010, I cant wait to see what you have to show in the coming year!
