I'm finally getting around to posting some pictures from my first trip to the Roan Highlands (taken in late January). All I've got to say is that the Roan Highlands are impressive, even in the bland months of winter! Throw some pink in those rhododendrons, and some green on the trees, and it's no surprise that this becomes a world-class photographic destination! For those who aren't familiar, the Appalachian Trail crosses the summits of the Roan Highlands, taking a generally west-east route. I followed the AT about 1.5 miles to this location on Jane Bald, arriving an hour before sunrise.
This picture is yet another lesson in why you shouldn't pack up early. I knew that a winter storm was coming, so I was hoping that the sunrise would show for at least a little. When sunrise actually came, the first band of clouds obscured the light, and the sunrise seemed to be a bust. I was about to pack up my gear, but decided to wait just a few minutes later (it was 20 - 30 min. after sunrise by this point). I was opening my backpack to pack my stuff up when the sun finally broke through, showering the slopes of Round Bald with golden morning light. Also, at this moment, the first bands of the storm really started coming over the top of Roan Mountain. I would have missed it all if I left when I originally wanted to!
Even though this is probably the single most cliche shot form the Roan Highlands, I'm still very pleased with the picture and my trip. Regarding the picture, I really like the mix of warm and cool colors. with a gradual transition between the two. As far as the trip goes, I'm glad to have scouted out this area for a trip in June!

Amarantine is an album by Irish musician Enya. The album was released on November 22, 2005. It won the Grammy Award for Best New Age Album for 2007. The release date was announced by Roma Ryan on September 23, 2005 at the official Enya forum.[1] It was subsequently leaked to the Internet on November 11, 2005.
Two songs from the album were released as singles: the title track "Amarantine" and "It's in the Rain." "Someone Said Goodbye" was released as a promotional single in the United States as well.

Gaudí evolucionó de un primer proyecto gótico hacia un estilo personal, orgánico, inspirado en las formas de la naturaleza: para librarse de los contrafuertes góticos, ideó el uso de columnas en forma de tronco de árbol, que permiten descargar el peso de las cubiertas directamente en el suelo, solución práctica a la vez que estética, ya que convierte el interior de las naves del templo en un espacio orgánico que semeja un bosque. En 1987 se inició la cimentación de las naves; para 1997 se completaron las bóvedas laterales y se empezó la central.
El templo tiene planta de cruz latina, con cinco naves de 90 metros de longitud, y crucero de tres naves de 60 metros; la nave central tiene un ancho de 15 metros, y 7,5 las laterales, haciendo un total de 45 metros; ancho del crucero, 30 metros. La altura es de 45 metros en las bóvedas de la nave central y 30 en las laterales, mientras que las del cimborio central llegarán a los 60 metros. Las naves laterales contendrán las cantorías para los coros. El ábside es lobulado, con deambulatorio entorno del presbiterio. The church plan is that of a Latin cross with five aisles. The central nave vaults reach 45 meters while the side nave vaults reach 30 meters. The transept has 3 aisles. The columns are on a 7.5 meter grid however the columns of the apse, resting on del Villar's foundation, do not adhere to the grid, requiring a section of columns of the ambulatory to transition to the grid thus creating a horseshoe pattern to the layout of those columns. The crossing rests on the four central columns of porphyry supporting a great hyperboloid surrounded by two rings of 12 hyperboloids (currently under construction). The central vault reaches 60 meters. The apse will be capped by a hyperboloid vault reaching 75 meters. Gaudi intended that a visitor standing at the main entrance be able to see the vaults of the nave, crossing, and apse, thus the graduated increase in vault loftiness.
The columns of the interior are a unique Gaudi design. Besides branching to support their load, their ever-changing surfaces are the result of the intersection of various geometric forms. The simplest example is that of a square base evolving into an octagon as the column rises, then a 16-sided form, and eventually to a circle. This effect is the result of a three-dimensional intersection of helicoidal columns (for example a square cross-section column twisting clockwise and a similar one twisting counter-clockwise).

The statues-columns that support the three archivolts are one of the most beautiful elements of the portal, those on the left represent the Three Marys who symbolize the resurrection and those on the right Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Judas. The lower part of the cover is the work of the master Leodegarius.

Hmmmm, so it seems I was REALLY lucky with the previous render I made that it came out so nicely. There was no denoising needed so all of the detail was kept. Here... not so much...
One of the reasons I wanted to use blender for rendering was so that I could make more realistic backdrop materials. I spent a bit setting up the one here with a paper-y texture based on photos I've seen around and in the noisy image, it came out really well. But there were a ton of fireflies in the gangway so I used the basic denoising techniques and suddenly, bye bye paper. I will be looking into using masks to better direct the denoising. Maybe I can constrain it to only look at noise on the model itself and to ignore the backdrop? I may revisit this render from another angle when I have this all figured out. It just looks too soft...
The other reason I wanted to use blender was so that I could add more non-Lego objects, such as the paper cut-out lines here. I think the line came out really well with its thickness, slight imperfections, etc. As for the model, you may recognize it as the base model from the Hibernia Roto-Lift. In fact, the only reused portion is the angled setup of the gangway door. Everything else is new to this build and the structure is far more robust. It is still based on the same concept art though and serves generally the same purpose. The rear landing legs tuck away and the vertical fins fold down into their place for flight. I think I made this pigeon large enough to carry an Imperial tank or ATST.
Oh, and I couldn't decide which mouse droid I liked more, so here are both!

Luosto is a picturesque ski village with a surprisingly large number of accommodations. Although there are a few hotels, you'll mostly find cozy bungalows here. Luosto is nestled in the heart of Pyhä-Luosto National Park, surrounded by ancient forests, rugged gorges, and peat bogs. It's a unique piece of nature rarely seen in our part of Europe. Finnish Lapland is far to the north, so there's usually plenty of snow here. Luosto offers a stunning landscape for adventurous activities and the opportunity to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the Finnish wilderness. Our plan is to climb the spectacular fell (mountain). As we step out of the car, it feels like nature here is in a deep winter sleep. Our hike begins at dawn in the remote hamlet of Ukko-Luostontien. In Lapland, the colors of the sky during sunrise and sunset can be very intense due to the low position of the sun on the horizon. The long twilight periods can create unique colors in the sky, including green hues, due to various scattering effects of sunlight. The trees gently bend under the weight of the snow.
We walk along the ridge of the fells of Ukko-Luosto, passing through the surrounding primeval forest. The summer path to the top is closed due to avalanche danger, so we continue our journey and attempt to reach the summit via the northern ridge of Ukko-Luosto. The path ascends steeply through the enchanting ancient forests, where the trees covered in crown snow look magical. The last section to the top of the mountain has snow too deep for us. The path winds its way to the top of Pikku-Luosto Fell. We sink in and have to crawl to the top. Snowshoes are definitely necessary here. In the impressive Ukko-Luosto Scenic Hut, we can take a break, warm up, and admire the magnificent view. It's terribly cold up here on the 514-meter-high mountain, partly due to the biting polar wind. The sun reaches its highest point on this short January day and shines beautifully just over the mountain's peak. There's also a solar halo visible, an optical phenomenon caused by the refraction, reflection, and scattering of light by ice crystals in the atmosphere. We thaw out a bit and rest before starting our return journey. Walking in the snow is exhausting. We take the same route back because we don't want to get stuck in deep snow and aim to be back in Luosto before dark. In total, we walked more than 18,000 steps, but we enjoyed this special place in Lapland. In Luosto, we treated ourselves to delicious reindeer jerky and panna cotta, while BieJee savored a reindeer burger.

Ons plan is om de spectaculaire fell (berg) te beklimmen. Wanneer we uit de auto stappen, lijkt de natuur hier in een diepe winterslaap te verkeren. Onze wandeling begint bij dageraad in het afgelegen gehucht Ukko-Luostontien. Ook is er een zonnehalo te zien, een optisch fenomeen dat ontstaat door de breking, reflectie en verstrooiing van licht door ijskristallen in de atmosfeer. We ontdooien nog even en rusten uit voordat we beginnen aan onze terugreis. Wandelen in de sneeuw is zwaar. We nemen dezelfde route terug omdat we niet vast willen komen te zitten in de diepe sneeuw en we in ieder geval voor het donker terug willen zijn in Luosto. In totaal hebben we meer dan 18.000 stappen gezet, maar we hebben genoten van deze speciale plek in Lapland. In Luosto hebben we onszelf getrakteerd op heerlijke rendier-jerky en panna cotta, terwijl BieJee genoot van een rendierburger.

Captured in RAW. Processed in Photoshop CS6. Increased the overall saturation with Hue/Saturation in Photoshop. Curve adjustment to increase the overall contrast. 1 layer mask in soft light mode at 50% gray, using brush tool to lighten and darken some areas of the image, to bring out details. Topaz Clarity to increase color and contrast.

Technical note: The image is a triple exposures tonemapped in Photomatix. Furthermore, a few layers of curves, levels, hue/saturation, added a vignette. Did the final color adjustments in Lightroom with a preset a found that simulates the look of the famous Velvia film.

Despite New Jersey being the most densely populated state, it holds tremendous diversity in preserved open space, especially our coastal salt marshes. The preservation of these wetland areas has played a huge role in the recovery of the osprey population in New Jersey. Today, they are home to the majority of ospreys (86%) who nest along the Atlantic Coast. Osprey nests define our coast and colonies are located along the entire coast from Sandy Hook to Cape May and west on the Delaware Bayshore up the Maurice River to Salem. This year a total of 668 active nests were recorded in New Jersey, with 75 of those being new nests from various regions of the state. This is well above the historic pre-DDT estimate of 500 nesting pairs and goes to show that ospreys and humans can coexist in New Jersey as long as we continue to protect wetland areas and conserve our natural resources, like forage fish, that ospreys need to thrive. The largest population gains in the state, from 2013 to 2017, were observed in both Monmouth and Ocean Counties, from 130 in 2013 to 207 in 2017.
The Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), sometimes known as the Sea Hawk, Fish Eagle or Fish Hawk, is a diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey. It is a large Raptor, reaching more than 24 inches in length and a 71 inches wingspan. It is brown on the upper parts and predominantly greyish on the head and under parts, with a black eye patch and wings. In 1994, the osprey was declared the provincial bird of Nova Scotia, Canada.

Hamnøy is a small fishing village in the municipality of Moskenes in Nordland county, Norway. It is located on the eastern side of Moskenesøya, about 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) northeast of Reine, along the Vestfjorden. Hamnøy was previously connected to Reine by ferry, but this was replaced by bridges on the European route E10 highway as part of the Lofoten Mainland Connection.

Taking on a Load of wheat at Richardson's International Main Elevator Port of Thunder Bay .
MARIA G (IMO: 9358369) is a Bulk Carrier that was built in 2007 (15 years ago) and is sailing under the flag of Malta.
It’s carrying capacity is 37249 t DWT and her current draught is reported to be 5.7 meters. Her length overall (LOA) is 199.9 meters and her width is 23.7 meters.
In 2014, Richardsons announced that it had more than doubled its capacity in the Port of Thunder Bay by purchasing and re-opening the “Current River Terminal”, formerly part of Viterra Inc. and located near Richardson’s original “Heritage Terminal”. The Viterra elevator had not been used in three years and required cleanup and repairs. Both terminals are nearby one another on the Current River section of the waterfront.
While there aren’t as many grain elevators as there once were, Thunder Bay still has the largest grain storage capacity in North America and hundreds of thousands of tonness of wheat, canola, soybeans, flax and oats are stored in silos before being shipped.
The Current River Terminal has a storage capacity of 235,000 tonnes, while the Heritage Terminal holds 208,000 tonnes. This makes for a combined storage capacity of 443,000 tonnes.
