For the first round of this year’s RogueOlympics over on RogueBricks I decided to build a little love letter to late nights and captivating books, a combination I would often be consumed by when I was younger. I hope you like it!
The RogueOlympics require you to stick to 101 elements or less so this little scene was built with a total of 92 bricks. It’s always great fun to work around those restrictions as it’s so different from most other contests, so of course I had to join.
Feel free to join this ongoing contest yourself! You can join each week for a different theme that needs to be built with 101 elements or less.

This photo is for my cousin, someone too close in my heart. He is a young lad who sadly was diagnosed with a rare disease and early Monday morning he joined our creator in the heavens :(

It was too early and sudden. I am not sure if I have gone through the stages of grieving correctly.
It all felt like a dream, a really bad dream and I only wish for is to be awaken.

This treehopper was filmed in the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador and measures only 6 mm in length. Treehoppers are insects related to cicadas and leafhoppers.
Most treehoppers have a highly modified pronotum on the back, in this case forming several hollow spheres and spines, which makes it unpalatable for potential predators. Moreover it resembles an ant which most predators rather avoid.
Treehoppers feed on plant sap which is rich in sugar. In the video the sucking mouthparts of the treehopper have penetrated the vein of a leaf.

This is a stacked version of "Thunderstruck" with other photos taken before and after the original photo. I combined them in Photoshop CS4 using a Star Trails action. Final processing done in Lightroom 2.
Another example of the great power of lightning in the mountains in Colorado. This storm was parked over Gunnison, CO on the night of September 12th. I was traveling from Creede, CO back to Gunnison, when near the Powderhorn Guest Ranches, I saw the lightning lighting up the dark night sky. Surprisingly, this was taken around 8:10pm. Surprisingly dark for that night, oh well the days are definitely getting shorted as fall approaches.

I show a text sample: left part without any kerning, right part (partim) with "optical kerning" in InDesign. More on the evolution to this typeface on this Flickr set. Maybe listen to some music at it .

A third image from my trip to Devon last week.
I met up with Gary 'The Milster' Miller for a moonlit shoot up at Staple Tor. I'd never met Gary before and we had a real hoot stood on top of a pile of stones for an hour or so to capture this image. I'd wanted to return to this Tor for a night image for months and the conditions were superb with banks of fog rolling over and past us as we cleaned our lenses and fired off exposures as quickly as we could.
The position of the fog and clouds was all a bit random and only a couple of the shots looked good, this being my favourite.
All in all a right laugh and an image hard won that I'm pleased with. Check Gary's photography out here, a top chap and a talented photographer.

Hello flickr, how have you been?
Thank you all for the well-wishes and emails during my absence. I'm fine, I've just been lazy. I needed to check out for a while, and I did just that. It's likely I won't be around as much in the near future: its winter and I seem to lose a lot of motivation. I have a hard time finding the beauty in things when I can't feel my toes and its dark @ 4:30pm. I'm still trying to shoot and I've got lots of archive stuff (see above) so I don't think I'll be going dormant. A photo a day seems like a bit of a stretch though.
Photographically speaking, 2009 was a pretty amazing year for me. Much of my success is due to the amazing network of contacts and friends I've developed here. Your commentary and criticism is fantastic, your work is inspiring. All of you drive me is some way to become a better storyteller through photos. You all rock, I really can't thank you enough.
So, Happy (much belated) New Year. I wish you the very best in 2010, I cant wait to see what you have to show in the coming year!
