Getting a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes on Call For Help.

Our Lady Help of Christians at Kitt's Green in the Tile Cross area of Birmingham is a stunning late 1960s Catholic church by Richard Gilbert Scott and remarkably inventive, on a T-shaped plan with a ribbed roof that curves upwards, rising to form a central tower over the core of the building. Not everyone will find this attractive, but I consider it a most impressive piece of architecture.

This was my second visit and I noticed a distinct change since my last owing to work having been done on the copper roof covering, which has returned to an intriguing shade of verdigris green which enhances it immensely and contrasts nicely with the more neutral tones of the brick and concrete elements.

The interior is one of the most dramatic architectural spaces I've seen in a modern church, with the roof of nave and transepts rising to a crescendo to form a towering crossing over the sanctuary, the ribbed ceilings curving away as if they were the fabric of a pitched tent. Copious quantities of stained glass fill the windows and strangely shaped apertures, mostly abstract in form and the work of artist John Chrestien.

The main worship area forms a T-shaped cross culminating in the angular brick wall behind the altar (as is common in churches of the period this focal point is one of the only walls not pierced by coloured glass!). There is a kind of ambulatory forming narrow side aisles around the interior and two octagonal side chapels flanking the nave, one the baptistery, the other a Lady Chapel with a striking window depicting the winged lion of St Mark, commemorating the Venetian victory at the Battle of Lepanto.

This is one of the most remarkable modern church buildings I've seen, but alas it is normally kept locked so not an easy one to visit unless one is attending Mass or can coincide a visit with service times. My first attempts to visit did not go well, but happily this time was much better as I was able to coincide with a friend repairing one of the windows (and thus also lend a helping hand).

Someone please help me keep this place clean.

Today I helped create a mixed reality event in Second Life. A member of parliament held a luncheon session in a local café, where people could come, ask questions, share problems etc. At the same time the MoP was also present in Second Life. So that people could do the same there, without being obliged to come to the café. It was an experiment but I think a worthwile one. My feeling that it is in mixed reality events that SL is most valuable has been reinforced again. Images of what took place in SL was shown on screen in the café

Help again from my wife and step-daughter to work on my studio skills. This time I have tried a dark background, and some of my friends suggestions - ie. going for a more telephoto lens around 100mm, softbox directly in front and above the subject, bare light behind and above for hair and seperation, and a big gold and silver reflector balanced on their laps to light under their chins and necks. (In this one Mandy was trying on her costume for next weeks girls night out dressed as Grannies!)

Help the aged,

one time they were just like you,

drinking, smoking cigs and sniffing glue. Help the aged,

don't just put them in a home,

can't have much fun in there all on their own.

Give a hand, if you can,

try and help them to unwind.

Give them hope & give them comfort 'cos they're running out of time.

*In the meantime we try.

Try to forget that nothing lasts forever. No big deal so give us all a feel.

Funny how it all falls away.

When did you first realise?

It's time you took an older lover baby. Teach you stuff

although he's looking rough.

Funny how it all falls away.

Help the aged

'cos one day you'll be older too

- you might need someone who can

pull you through

& if you look very hard

behind the lines upon their face you may see where you are headed

and it's such a lonely place.

You can dye your hair

but it's the one thing you can't change.

Can't run away from yourself, yourself...

Funny how it all falls away.

So help the aged.

..., dusting the props.

Our Daily Challenge - July 11, 2015 - "The Household Task You Hate The Most"

When you have have two large fluffy dogs - especially one who is a constant heavy shedder (Henry, that would be you) - dusting is either a full-time job or an exercise in futility.

At least with vacuuming you get the pleasure of hauling the full bag out to the garbage knowing that you accomplished something.

To be honest, I have a narrow plastic garden rake - the sort you use to get the leaves out from under small shrubs - and I first rake the carpet before I vacuum it.

This not only saves on vacuum bags (else I would fill one per week) but keeps the countless bits of shredded boxes (eh hem... looking at you again, Henry) from clogging up the machine.
