I bought this Panasonic RX-5012 yesterday from a charity shop for £10 with no guarantee it would work, but I've got 30 days to take it back in...

The radio works okay (needs a new tuning knob) though the cassette player doesn't, my dad's taken it apart and it would seem that it's the motor that's broken (EG500AD 9V CW) as there's no sound and the belt's not moving. I need to know if it's worth repairing or not? I'm not sure what this is worth in working order and the only motor I've found is from New Zealand so any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you in advance.

I'm trying to grow seeds again. I didn't have much luck last year. I bought these tupperwares (on left) that had clear lids a divider in the center and a vent. I'm also trying the cubes. I've never seen this done before. I figured if it works I can stack them and they'll get lots of light this way. I'm using chopped long fiber sphagnum moss. Will this work? Should I try something else? I've seen some set ups in 10 gallon aquariums with fans. I'm open to suggestions. I really want to sprout seeds and have them survive. Is peat and sand a better medium? And yes I do have small trouble with fungus.

The message came in through the Best Friends Network Louisiana Go Local … there’s a dog, possibly feral, in great need of help in the New Orleans area. The sender of the message, Jennifer Tavernier, a volunteer at a local no-kill animal shelter, Plaquemines Animal Welfare Society shelter in Belle Chasse, Louisiana, described the situation: there is a large stray dog living underneath a house near her work place. The dog has been living underneath this house for three months.

Jennifer explained that as soon as she found out about this dog, she immediately started feeding him, and started seeking help.

She described the dog: “He appears to be a mix breed, possibly a lab mix, but I haven't been able to get a good look at him because he runs underneath the house. He looks about 50-60 pounds, but definitely underweight. He is not a mean dog, just very feral and very scared of people.”

She continued, “Oddly enough, he still has a very long walking leash still attached to his neck collar. No one can get the leash off of him because he won't let anyone near him. I am so worried that the leash is going to get caught onto something and prevent him from moving.” Her deep concern for this dog clearly came through the words in her e-mail.

Trixie

Immediately the Go Local volunteer reading the message, a Louisiana resident, thought of Animal Rescue of New Orleans (ARNO). ARNO is one of the few rescues in the country that has a program for feral dogs.

Jennifer’s message continued. She had contacted several local rescues and shelters for help, including ARNO. ARNO had agreed to help trap the dog, but there was currently no room in the inn at the ARNO shelter. So the task at hand was to find placement for him at a shelter or ideally a foster home. Jennifer was asking for Best Friends’ help.

The volunteer contacted ARNO’s director, Charlotte Bass, for ideas. Yes, Charlotte said, Jennifer had spoken with Lise McComisky, their feral dog rehabilitator. They were going to try to help Jennifer catch this dog. But they did not have any room to take him in at that moment. Lise had recommended to Jennifer that she continue to feed the dog where he was, until a place could be found.

At about the very same time, a message came in to the Community Animal Assistance (CAA) department at Best Friends, about a dog in New Orleans who was living under a house. The sender was asking for help finding a rescue or foster home for this dog, once he was caught. The message was forwarded to the CAA volunteer in Louisiana, who is also the volunteer who receives the Louisiana Go Local messages. The message was from Jennifer!

The volunteer contacted Jennifer again, now through the Community Animal Assistance department. The CAA department is a wonderful resource of information on a wide variety of animal situations and problems. More information was shared with Jennifer.

Not long after, the response arrived: the dog, now named “Trixie” (yes, she is a “she”, not a “he”) had been rescued!

Black Panther Party leader Huey Newton is shown in an undated image circa 1968.

Newton personified black armed resistance to police repression and the cry “Free Huey” could be heard at every left wing or black nationalist gathering for several years in the late 1960s.

Early Life

Huey Percy Newton was born on February 17, 1942, in Monroe, Louisiana. Newton helped establish the African-American political organization the Black Panther Party, and became a leading figure in the Black Power movement of the 1960s.

As a teenager growing up in Oakland, California, he got in trouble with the law—as he did numerous times throughout his life.

Black Panther Creation

Despite his legal run-ins, Newton began to take his education seriously. Although he graduated high school in 1959, Newton barely knew how to read. He became his own teacher, learning to read by himself. In the mid-1960s, Newton decided to pursue his education at Merritt College, where he met Bobby Seale.

The two were briefly involved with political groups at the school before they set out to create one of their own. Founded in 1966, they called their group the Black Panther Party for Self Defense.

Unlike many of the other social and political organizers of the time, they took a militant stance, advocating the ownership of guns by African Americans, and were often seen brandishing weapons. A famous photograph shows Newton—the group's minister of defense—holding a gun in one hand and a spear in the other.

The group believed that violence—or the threat of violence—might be needed to bring about social change. They set forth their political goals in a document called the Ten-Point Program, which included better housing, jobs, and education for African Americans.

It also called for an end to economic exploitation of black communities. Still the organization itself was not afraid to punctuate its message with a show of force. For example, to protest a gun bill in 1967, Newton and other members of the Panthers entered the California Legislature fully armed. The action was a shocking one that made news across the country. And Newton emerged as a leading figure in the black militant movement.

Arrest and Conviction

The Black Panthers wanted to improve life in black communities and establish social programs to help those in need. They also fought against police brutality in black neighborhoods by mostly white cops.

Members of the group would go to arrests in progress and watch for abuse. Newton himself was arrested in 1967 for allegedly killing an Oakland police officer during a traffic stop. He was later convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to two to 15 years in prison.

But public pressure—"Free Huey" became a popular slogan of the day—helped Newton's cause. The case was eventually dismissed after two retrials ended with hung juries.

During its existence, members of the group clashed with police several times. The party's treasurer, Bobby Hutton, was even killed during of these conflicts in 1968.

In the 1970s, the Black Panthers began to fall apart. Key members left, and Newton faced more criminal charges. To avoid prosecution, he fled to Cuba in 1971, but he returned three years later.

Later Years

With the Panthers in disarray, Newton returned to school, earning a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1980. In his final years, however, it is believed that he suffered from a drug problem. The once popular revolutionary died on August 22, 1989, in Oakland, California, after being shot on the street.

Despite a falling reputation in later years, Newton symbolized defiance against the armed repression of black people by the white power structure.

Pretty Muddy Event Tatton Park 2014

I just finished reading "The Genius of Dogs" by Brian Hare (brianhare.net/the-genius-of-dogs/). It was a fascinating look at how the cognitive abilities of dogs do warrant a status of exceptional intelligence. Though obviously their smarts seem lesser when compared to our own, it's usually based on our tests. Or to quote Albert Einstein, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

One obviously bad test in that spirit is how well these canines are at helping me work.

I had a horrible headache today, one of those lightning-bolt-down-the-side-of-your-head / vice-grip-on-your-temples kind. 4 of the 5 dogs I'm babysitting this week decided today was the perfect day for marathon barking sessions. I wasn't happy. But here's the strange thing: Norm is usually the worst dog for barking - in volume, octive and volume. In fact, Buhunds were bred for barking.

But for some reason, he seemed particularly sensitive to my pain today (very out of character). He insisted on lying on top of me (his way of showing affection) while I worked.

Sure, I couldn't use the laptop while he licked my one hand, and insisted on getting pet with the other. And he was absolutely useless helping me figure out how to sort based on a complicated sub-query. But I'd say he helped me in a different way, based on a different test, by showing me some love, not to mention not barking (even with obnoxious screaming neighbourhood kids running around just outside the window and construction going on down the street).

Best assistant, ever.

(Tucker, the Jack Russel also pictured, was not helpful. Totally part of the problem. But he's cute, and somehow never misses a photo-op.)

From a radio documentary on MLK:

The Poor People's Campaign was King's audacious plan to lead waves of poor people to Washington to set up a shanty town on the National Mall to show people in power the faces of the poor.

King: This will be no mere one-day march in Washington but a trek to the nation's capital by suffering and outraged citizens who will go to stay until some definite and positive action is taken to provide jobs and income for the poor.

Vincent Harding: Martin was one of these "crazy" members of the Christian community who really took Jesus seriously.

Historian and activist, Vincent Harding.

Harding: And believed that the way you get closest to the divine is by getting closer and closer to the most outcast members of the society. And that's a hard path, but once you have chosen it, you know that there's no easy alternative.

I don't think I'm "satisfied". I've redone the darts a million times and I can only seam to get anything ressembling normal when I do two at the side like this. Is that weird? I'm afraid to just go ahead and make the pattern (yeah, I've never sewn darts, but let's cross that bridge later), because I hate to waste time and fabric if this is just complete, ridiculously wrong.

Please give it to me straight. I can take it! What the heck and I doing wrong?

And, really, is it smart to make this dress on my body shape in home decorator's weight fabric? I thought the home decor would be fine because it's kind of like quilting cotton + lining, with the lining already built in. But I'm worried that if I can't make the darts look halfway decent in the muslin that problems could be amplified in the heavier weight home decor? I don't know.

If I look like I'm ready to give up in that picture, it's because I am.

Neighbor children of Mariam Kromah help carry the family's belongings to UNHCR trucks.

Mariam Kromah, 60, is returning members of her splintered family to Liberia from Guinea to where they fled as refugees during Liberia's civil war. Mariam had been in Guinea since 1990, and was joined later by her grandchildren, sent by their parents, during fighting in Monrovia in 2003.

The UNHCR is trying to reduce the three camps of Liberian refugees in Guinea to one, urging Liberians to return voluntarily. Many are reluctant and plan to stay in Guinea either because they still fear for their lives in Liberia or because they have lived in Guinea ten years or more and have stronger ties there.

Due to aid shortages, food rations to the camp were reduced in 2005 from 2100 k/cal per person per day to 1600 k/cal per day, and will stop entirely in most cases in December 2006. Since 2005 the care and maintenance budget for the camp, hosting about 4800 refugees, has been cut, reducing education, health care and shelter.

Kromah will take the children to a small town called Jarmulor, in Lofa County, until the dry season when she will travel to Monrovia to tell their parents to come get them.

An aerial view of the Celanese Corporation textile plant in Cumberland Maryland by Fairchild Aerial Surveys January 2, 1948.

Important strikes at the plant took place in 1936 and 1939 that resulted in the unionization of 10,000 production workers and helped create a key union leader, George A. Meyers.

Meyers helped lead the in-plant organizing and led a number of sit-down strikes within the plant. He would go on to become president of the local union and, in 1941, president of the Maryland and District of Columbia Industrial Union Council of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO).

Meyers joined the Communist Party during the fight to organize the union at Celanese and as president of the MD-DC CIO, led the fight to integrate basic industry—overseeing the successful efforts to integrate the Celanese and Kelly-Springfield plants in Cumberland, Glen L. Martin aircraft factory in Middle River and the Bethlehem-Fairfield shipyard in Baltimore.

Efforts throughout World War II by the CIO to desegregate jobs within the Bureau of Engraving in federal government and the Capital Transit Company in Washington, D.C. were waged in earnest but were ultimately less successful. The CIO also played a key role in the fight against police brutality in the District of Columbia in 1941.

After World War II, the onset of the cold war led to the expulsion of Communist Party members from most unions, including the Textile Workers.

Meyers went to jail for 3 ½ years for his membership in the Communist Party in the 1950s but went on to head the Party’s labor activities until his death in 1999.

The Celanese plant at its peak employed 13,000 workers producing materials made from synthetic fiber and closed in 1983.

n honor of Pain Awareness Month, we want to bring attention to those who are suffering silently with their chronic pain. Coping and managing chronic pain can be hard for anyone, especially if you’ve been dealing with that pain for a long time. That’s why we at ACG Medical have compiled some top tips that will help reduce the pain and get you back to feeling like yourself again!

1. Learn about meditation.

Completely relaxing your mind and soul can help reduce the pain you feel constantly. Finding a place where you can accept this condition in your mind and coming to terms with it can help you reduce the physical pain. Do a body scan and move your attention systematically through different body parts, starting at the top and working your way down. Try to accept and be attentive to whatever sensations you notice in the body, without evaluating or trying to change what you find.

2. Exercise regularly.

Exercise releases endorphins, which make people happier. Know your limit, even if it means you can only go for a fast walk – anything can help to release endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain.

3. Become a healthier version of you.

Try your best to curb unhealthy habits like drinking and smoking. Drugs may make you think they’re helping with the pain but they are actually making it worse over time. Eat healthy foods that can help with different problems within your body, such as inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids, a type of fat found in oily fish such as salmon and tuna, are known to reduce inflammation, particularly in people with rheumatoid arthritis and non-rheumatoid arthritis joint pain and stiffness.

4. Distract yourself with things you enjoy.

Although you need to accept your pain and come to terms with it, sometimes it can help to use distractions. Play a game, watch a movie or any other activity that stimulates your brain and makes you happy.

5. Stop as much stress in your life as you can.

Stress has been proven to deteriorate your health. Whether it’s work, family, friends or yourself bringing stress into your life, remove it completely. Those feelings of depression, anxiety and anger that come from stress can increase your body’s sensitivity to pain.

6. Find products to help reduce the pain.

Since chronic pain happens for so many, there are plenty of products out there to help reduce the hurt. Whatever your pain may be, here are a few examples of how products can help.

Lift chairs can reduce the pain you may feel when having to get in and out of a seated position.

Knee braces or back braces can help support you by taking pressure off your hurting joints.

Shoe insoles can make your walk to the store a little less painful.

Pain management products will help you heat and cool the area to relieve pain.

ACG Medical Supply provides a broad range of products that can help with easing and erasing your pain! If you or someone you love is looking for assistance, contact us today!
