Major Phil Packer was injured on the 19th February 2008 in Iraq and suffered spinal cord damage. He is now in a wheelchair.

Phil has decided to raise £1million for Help for Heroes. He explains why,

"The reason why I am embarking on this quest is that I am inspired by fellow injured servicemen at Headley Court; so many who have injuries far worse than mine. I believe I have a responsibility to assist those who need support. I hope to achieve this by using the training and experience the Armed Forces have given me, combined with a new understanding of the emotional journey. I hope to succeed with a positive attitude and with sincerity, humility, understanding and compassion. Help for Heroes, Headley Court and the Army have been my lifeline; this is my way of giving something back.

"Through physical challenges, I intend to support Help for Heroes by raising £1million and whilst doing so, displaying a positive image of disability and provide information on events and sports to fellow injured servicemen in order to raise awareness of organisations, charities and people that help and assist the disabled".

I am privileged to have got to know Phil and to be joining him in an attempt to row to France! You can support Phil's Challenge by donating at [www.philpacker.com]

Thank you.

"Angles" for the 2010 Lighting 102 group using a rather dashing "Help for Strobists Heroes" stuffed toy. Just need to remember to keep this one away from the dog when I've finished with him!

Going from 90 deg (normal to subject) left of shot in roughly 1/8s of a circle (it doesn't seem right to say 22.5deg - it's clearly not that precise) missing out the on axis (i've got plenty of those).

The three rows are different height angles 30deg up, eye level and 30 deg down.

What does this have to do with you?

We need you to vote and help us reach a minimum of 250 votes. We are currently at 108 votes which was gained over a period of 24 hours. If we can keep the momentum going we can easily reach 250 in 48 hours. This can only get done with your help and with you spreading the news. After you vote tell everyone you know to vote as well and have them tell everyone they know. If we can get 5 people to vote and then they get 5 people each to vote and then they get 5 people each to vote we will have our goal! But it starts with that first vote... YOU!

SO WHAT DO YOU GET?

IF WE GET THE 250 VOTES IN ON TIME

We will host a webstore wide sale of 25% off for 25 hours. Thats right! EVERYTHING in store will go on sale for 25 hours.

Thats not enough? Well if we get the grant each person who voted will get the figure above....FREE. Just for supporting and passing the word.

Let us know if you voted or that you got someone else to vote. The figure will be an exclusive fully printed scifi figure that will only be released through this grant offer!

With your support we can achieve much for this small business and we can offer so much more to our customers. Some of the bonuses this will allow for you is cheaper product, with no middle man fees are reduced. :)

Helper, Utah, 19 April 2010

In April 2010, I rode Amtrak from Sacramento to Chicago to attend the Center for Railroad Photography and Art conference in Lake Forest, Illinois, a few miles north of Chicago.

En route, I stopped and spent a day in Helper, Utah and another day In Burlington, Iowa. I'd wanted to watch trains in both places for some years and this was a chance to do so, as I was going by myself. I could not imagine my wife feeling that a stopover at Helper would have been a great idea on one of our trips to the east coast to visit her family.

Helper is at the east end of the climb over Soldier Summit, which takes the former Rio Grande Deniver-Salt Lake City main line from the drainage of the Colorado River to the drainage of the Great Salt Lake.

The photos start with a view out the rear car as we pass Soldier Summit, then a few shots of Castle Gate before we arrive in Helper, bright and early.

At one time, this was quite a busy yard, but with less traffic on the former DRGW, and DPUs in common use, there are fewer trains that need helper units over the mountain.

The empty storefronts in the town reflect fewer people living in the area, as railroading and coal mining have declined in the area.

I stayed at a motel at the west end of town, so it was several blocks of bag drag down the quiet main street before checking in. A move was being filmed at the hotel and I watched a couple of scenes being filmed. I don't recall the name of the movie, but I don't recall ever seeing it released...perhaps it was an art house film.

After dropping my bags in my room, I went for what I intended to be a short walk. A 55 Chevy was in a parking lot. I got photos of that and then wound up following a ballast train (chasing a train on foot, it was going so slowly!) up the hill. The ballast train was pulled by a patched C&NW GE. A westbound coal train overtook the ballast train as I watched.

I walked as far as Utah Railway Junction. The Utah brought a train out of Martin and it stopped. I waited around for a while, but the Utah train didn't go any farther and I had not brought water, as I'd intended this to just be a short walk that had gone a lot longer are farther than expected, so I went back to the hotel.

The movie was filming in the office when I had first arrived and when I got back from my walk the crew was chatting with a couple of actors taking a break outside,...the woman in a man's shirt that was long enough to cover her hips and the guy in a towel.

My next walk was into town, producing photos of the nearly empty yard an underpass with faded Rio Grande lettering.

A couple of eastbound UP mainfiests came through, including one with a wrapped up Siemens LRV on a flatcar. The ballast train returned with the C&NW GE running short hood forward.

Next destination was the Utah's shops at Martin. Utah's units had a mix of Utah red/gray paint and G&W orange.

Upon my return to the hotel, an outdoor scene was being shot for the movie. Actors were sitting around a table and a chef and waiters brought food. This shot was repeated maybe a dozen times until the director was happy with it. Another UP eastbound manifest rolled up the crossing near the motel and stopped for a while, allowing me to get it from several angles, including one featuring an old truck that I've seen used as a prop in other photos.

The westbound California Zephyr was due at sunset and I shot it near the motel, across the track with a dramatic sky.

A good day for photography, even if the Utah no longer ran Alcos or F45s and the railroad through town was no longer the Rio Grande

Another HelpPortrait we did here in Dallas. While some photographers were inside shooting, I came outside with a light and got some shots of the boys on the court. These young men really were polite and fun to be around. Sadly we had to stop because it was starting to rain. Check out HelpPortrait.com

I don't have notes of where this was taken, but it appears to be the same day as some other shots in East Lothian in June 1982. Can anyone identify it?

What looks like a 47 on an Edinburgh-Newcastle stopping service, I wonder if this is between Dunbar and Oxwellmains?

Not sure who these two girls are. Any suggestions?

This lady helped me to use a corner of this decaying park as a toilet for a teenage girl that I accompanied around. She insisted that even if there is no normal toilet she should use the corner that you can see behind her back. Me and hee stayed as a human shield to protect the gilr form the eyes of people passing by.

NY Times

Upon founding the Light Foundation, Matt dreamed about starting a camp where young men could learn lifelong skills that would help them be R.E.A.L (Responsible, Ethical, Accountable, Leaders). For its 10th consecutive year, the Light Foundation’s premier program, Camp Vohokase has done just that.

Each year, Matt chooses four incoming high school freshmen from an at-risk community and asks them to commit the next four years to our leadership program, which includes 10 days at Chenoweth Trails each summer. There are always 18 boys in camp, four from each grade level, with each group coming from a different part of the country. Those locations, all with a connect to the Light Foundation, include Greenville, Ohio, where Matt grew up; Woonsocket, Rhode Island, close to where Matt holds his signature fundraising event; New Orleans, Louisiana, where a like-minded charity had asked for help; West Lafayette, Indiana, where Matt attended Purdue; Gloucester, Worcester and New Bedford, Massachusetts, all close to where Matt played during his NFL years; Hammond, Indiana, where Matt’s wife Susie grew up and identified a need for support; and new this year, Washington D.C, where the treasurer of the board resides.

The young men are required to keep good academic standing, complete a yearly community service project back home, and check in with our head counselors on a frequent basis. Program Director Edgar Flores tracks the kids’ progress year-round. He also does quarterly visits in order to foster the ongoing relationship between the campers, their class, and the foundation. By interacting with them in their own space, we can learn more about their behaviors and how those connect with their personal situations. By entering their homes, we often have the chance to stand as a united front with their parents or guardians in ensuring they’re doing exactly what they need to do to succeed. These visits are critical in reassuring to the young men that we are committed to them and serve as a true support system and not just a summer camp counselor. Not to mention, we have a lot of fun! They bond over some good grub and connect about what’s going on in their lives at that moment. Past day trips during a visit have included: Dave & Buster’s, paint balling, laser tag, amusement parks, farms, and bowling. We do try and balance the fun with more educational opportunities like volunteer community service projects, visiting local museums, or making a college visit for some of our juniors and seniors.

In return of having a good academic standing, the campers spend ten days among nature enjoying all that our beautiful facility has to offer whether it be skeet shooting, woodworking, canoeing, archery, fishing, dirt biking, etc. Despite all the fun we have here, the young men are responsible for daily chores, site visits to area businesses, and the completion of a service project around Darke County. Each night of the stay is reserved for fireside chats. These chats are structured to help create a dialogue about the very real and difficult issues these young boys face back home.

For a lot of these kids, all they need is an opportunity. We use the outdoors as a real teaching tool and a way to get kids to open up. And with us, these kids aren’t given anything. We make them work for everything they achieve. But through that they understand and value hard work, they learn work ethic, and they become proud of what they do, and want to share their accomplishments. Our hope is that after four years, each young man graduates from the program ready to become leaders in their own communities, equipped with the necessary tools and a heart for service.

In the past 11 years, 30 at-risk young men have graduated from Vohokase Cultural Leadership Camp with the tools to tap into their greatest potential as people and community leaders.

I was so pleased to be part of this Help for Heroes charity event, amazing charity for our servicemen.

Okay, so in like 5th grade, I was really into SW, read all the EU books, ect. So shortly after joining Flickr, I totally lost interest (I'd already been loosing it...)

All this stuff has been sitting in my attic/garage for about a year, gradually getting scrapped and collecting dust. What I wanna know is if y'all think I should scrap, sell or keep my fleet. I really don't care at this point, I could use the moneyz but I could use some of the parts too and it'd take a while to repair everything into selling condition.

A small help from each one of us together could make a huge difference

I'd love some help with identification of these insects.

They were extremely small (this is almost maximum magnification with the S5 and a Raynox DCR-250), and so this is a true macro photo. There were two clusters of these on the side of a cypress tree standing on the edge of a lake at the Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge near Starkville, Mississippi. There were thousands of them in each group, they looked like patches of brown moss if viewed from a few feet away. I assume that these are juveniles of whatever they are since there were so many of them. We didn't see them anywhere else other than that one tree.
