Captain Graybeard and his Helmsman came down to the Library to teach the kids about pirates, play games, and look for the hidden treasure!
Once again in my search for different images of the barge match I decided to focus on the crew of this boat. Although I suspect that many of the people in this photograph are spectators who have paid to be on one this particular barge during the race I like the fact that it is an informal group and includes the helmsman. I also like the fact that it is taken against the light.

The tall ship Southern Swan, is a three masted barquentine, built in Denmark in 1922. It arrived in Australia in 1988 to take part in the first fleet re-enactment.
Southern Swan is currently owned and operated by Sydney Harbour Tall Ships. It is usually moored at Campbel cove near Circular Quay in Sydney.
Our captain at the helm. It would be another hour or so before we were in the dark water, swimming with mantas!

PACIFIC OCEAN (June 14, 2011) - Boatswain's Mate Kelcey Williams from Augusta, Ga. speaks to USS George Washington's (CVN 73) aft lookout via sound-powered telephone while performing lee helmsman duties on the nuclear powered aircraft carrier's navigation bridge. USS George Washington began its summer on June 12, 2011, departing its forward operating base of Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka. Onboard are more than 5,500 Sailors from George Washington and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5. Cape Sounion is at the southernmost tip of the Attic peninsula, 70 kilometres (43 miles) southeast of Athens.
Cape Sounion is noted for its Temple of Poseidon, one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens. Its remains are perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the sea.
The earliest literary reference to Sounion is in Homer's Odyssey (III. 278–285). The story recounts that as the various Greek commanders sailed back from Troy, the helmsman of the ship of King Menelaus of Sparta died at his post while rounding "Holy Sounion, Cape of Athens."
Archaeological finds on the site date from as early as 700 BC. Herodotus (VI.87) mentions that in sixth century BC, the Athenians celebrated a quinquennial festival at Sounion, which involved Athens' leaders sailing to the cape in a sacred boat.

This is the underpass of the Fanno Creek Trail and Scholls Ferry Road in Beaverton... taken from the Beaverton side.
Often this area floods during fall/winter storms. At night when approaching from Tigard it's nearly impossible (even with bright headlights) to tell how deep it is until you're in it already up to your ass.
I recently crossed here in 18+ inches of water... I had thought that it was closer to 9 inches going in.
I've added reflective markers at 1, 2, and 3 foot marks on three of the fence posts to help gauge the depth. Then someone removed them due to concerns that they would end up in the stream and cause problems for the aquatic life within.
I spoke once to the person, and he expressed concerns that nobody should go through there when there's water on the path as we don't know what kind of waste materials (dog feces etc) might be in it. What I find disturbing was how he'd rather risk the health of the stream by not allowing other cyclists to make informed decisions of the depth there (thus dragging chain lube and road grime through it), as well as the health of the cyclists he wants to protect from "waterbourne illnesses".
Every bill, despite the denomination, has the Chairman, the Great Helmsman's, warm visage steering the currency through today's socialism with a capital face economy. Variation among the denominations comes on the flip side of the bills, with depictions of various natural sites around China.
