Concentrating on the job of steering a narrowboat - constant adjustment of the tiller is needed to keep the boat pointing in the desired direction. More than a second or two's distraction will see it heading off into the bushes!

The mast top of the 17th c. evolved from a platform used by archers in the 15th c, then used by snipers with firearms - the object was to pick off the officers and the helmsman of the other ship. You can see the topmast extending up from the platform of the top

A rudder is a primary control surface used to steer a ship, boat, submarine, hovercraft, aircraft, or other conveyance that moves through a fluid medium (generally air or water). On an aircraft the rudder is used primarily to counter adverse yaw and p-factor and is not the primary control used to turn the airplane. A rudder operates by redirecting the fluid past the hull (watercraft) or fuselage, thus imparting a turning or yawing motion to the craft. In basic form, a rudder is a flat plane or sheet of material attached with hinges to the craft's stern, tail, or after end. Often rudders are shaped so as to minimize hydrodynamic or aerodynamic drag. On simple watercraft, a tiller—essentially, a stick or pole acting as a lever arm—may be attached to the top of the rudder to allow it to be turned by a helmsman. In larger vessels, cables, pushrods, or hydraulics may be used to link rudders to steering wheels. In typical aircraft, the rudder is operated by pedals via mechanical linkages or hydraulics.

You can analyze this shot, thinking on a duck, like a helmsman. But I like to think this shot watching three different type of backgrounds. By Edgar Barreira

Near Haroldswick (pronounced "Halswick" by Unst locals) on the island of Unst in Shetland, behind a Viking longhouse is a sizeable and authentic appearing Drakkar or Viking longship. This picture shows some carving detail on the stern as well as the external features of the steering oar that substitutes for a proper centrally mounted rudder: non-authentic features include John and Marion though the anti-wind braids of John's hair fit the bill.....
Shivering Sands Fort was the last of the forts to be floated out and established, towards the end of 1943. In 1963 a Danish ship hit and destroyed one of the towers (presumably the helmsman's guide dog had slipped out for a smoke). In 1963 Screaming Lord Sutch set up Radia Sutch here, which became Radio City in 1964.
