Ohhh, oooh, look! This is me sat in the helmsman's seat on board the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal. It has a teeny-tiny steering wheel. And power steering. Apparently.

For the record the ship was docked; I didn't really get to steer it. More's the pity.

Today we had a work jolly to Ark Royal as guests of the Royal Navy's Met branch. Which was nice.

A year ago today I hugged a tree for my first ever FGR shot.

...and that's just the photographer!

Six Go Mad in ... By Steve McHale Book Preview

The tragic wreck of the Admiral Van Tromp is documented here in an extract from the Whitby Lifeboat website: “Silver Medal awarded to Coxswain Robert Allen and the Bronze Medal awarded to Helmsman Richard Robinson for rescuing a survivor of the fishing vessel Admiral Van Tromp, which was wrecked after grounding on the Black Nab Rock in thick fog, an easterly wind, and a heavy breaking sea on 30 September 1976. When a survivor was seen on a rock Helmsman Robinson drove the D class lifeboat in at full speed, onto a ledge, and the man was grabbed just as a large sea broke over the rock and washed the boat back into the sea.”

I missed my late Helmsman, - I missed him even while his body was still lying in the pilot-house. Perhaps you will think it strange this regret for a savage who was no account. Well, don't you see, he had done something, he had steered, for months I had him at my back- a help- an instrument. It was a kind of partnership. He steered for me- I had to look after him, I worried about his deficiencies, and thus a subtle bond had been created, of which I only became aware when it was suddenly broken. And the intimate profundity of that look he gave me when he received his hurt remains to this day in my memory- like a claim of distant kinship in a supreme moment.

... I dragged him out, after first jerking the spear out of his side, which operation I confess I performed with my eyes shut tight. His heels leaped together over the little doorstep; his shoulders were pressed to my chest; I hugged him desperately. He was heavy, heavy; heavier than any man on earth. Then without more ado I tipped him overboard. The current snatched him, and I saw the body roll over twice before I lost sight of it for ever.

The Bow is a war memorial in Rotterdam. It commemorates the 3500 crew of Dutch merchant ships lost their lives in World War II. The monument of Fred Carasso was on April 10, 1957 by Princess Margriet unveiled at the corner of Boompjes and Leuvehaven. The 46 meter high aluminum construction symbolizes a bow in the concrete waves. Head Rush is an Antrim 27 racing sailboat from Sequoia Yacht Club. But what happened to the helmsman?

Little Texas Aggie Bear crawled up into one of the command chairs and yelled out, “Helmsman. Lay in a course and initiate warp drive!”

I woke up extra, extra early this morning. It was 10:30 a.m. Normally, I only see 10:30 on the clock once a day. The ferryboat company here along the Jersey Shore, SeaStreak, LLC received a new ferryboat this last week. It is the largest high-speed passenger catamaran in operation in the United States.

The nice people at SeaStreak conducted an “open ship” or is it “open boat?” at noon today so the public could view this remarkable piece of technology. They even provided free doughnuts and cocktails!!! The boat was built starting in 2019 at Midship Marine in Harvey, Louisiana.

The owners decided to name the new boat, “Courageous” as a tribute to first responders and individuals who worked in the medical field and continued to take other SeaStreak boats into Manhattan during the pandemic. A local media outlet stated that the boat is valued at ~$18M. It has two bars — one inside on the first deck, and another “summer” bar behind the wheelhouse on the third deck.

The outside portion of the boat has red, white, and blue LED lighting. I suspect it will look spectacular when it’s coming back from West Point next summer at night after the home football games. The boat hosts 720 passengers. Many of the seats have tables so families can play games on a long trip. There are also several cocktail tables near the inside bar area where the cool people can enjoy an adult beverage.

My favorite part of the “open boat” event was that we were able to go into the wheelhouse and see all of the technology used in a modern boat of this size. Especially the captain’s chair where he sits when he tells his first officer and navigator to engage the warp drive!

Fishermen's Memorial Statue (1925)

The inscription is taken from Psalm 107, verse 23, line 24, which reads as follows:

"They that go down to the sea in ships,

That do business in great waters;

These see the works of the Lord,

And his wonders in the deep."

The sculptor was Leonard Craske and the dedication was August 23, 1925. The bronze monument consists of a nearly square base of sea green granite, carried from the famous "Blood Ledge" in the Bay View section of Gloucester. The stone is cut with a rough finish to typify the rugged character of the figure, with a single panel on the front holding the bronze letters of inscription, "They that go down to the sea in ships". 1623 - 1923.

The pose chosen is that of a helmsman bringing his craft up as close hauled to the wind as possible to clear some dangerous rocks, his eyes being fixed on the sails to detect the first indication that they are beginning to spill the wind, every muscle being strained to hold the wheel firmly until the peril is passed.

This is a memorial to all of the Gloucester fishermen who in years since Gloucester was settled in 1623 have lost their lives while fishing. It faces the outer harbor in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

A full-sized figure in formal dress of about 1830, holding a sword above his head. The figurehead is from the Palinurus which went into the Lion Rock, off the north of St Martin's, while inward bound from Demerara in 1848. All her crew of 17 were drowned, eventually washed ashore and buried on St Mary's. The first alarm was raised by cattle, frightened out of their field by the noise of the vessel’s sails flapping and tearing in the wind.

Local people managed to save some of her cargo with 14 hogsheads, 71 puncheons of spirits and 9 quarter-casks of rum being brought ashore. Palinurus is the name of the helmsman of Achilles in Homer's Iliad.

Dual consoles lend themselves well to having two fishermen, one in the bow and one in the stern -- or, three. The third being the helmsman awaiting his turn at bat.
