Candidly I search the boat drawn to the helmsman at the stern. Authority radiates
through timbers and sail. No truck for failure nor abandonment of post. A hard
impervious rock of a man, the master.
Huge knurled hands stand ready, eyes pierce the glinting eddies. All about the world
moves, making way for the stranger from the south. His presence settles the chop,
clouds part and sun no doubt.
The world moves on, I don’t. I sit gnome like contemplating the scene. Chain rattles,
splash as anchor is thrown. Hard men of salt look up from nets and pots, gauging
new arrivals and are found wanting.
This is the binnacle of the Cutty Sark, described elsewhere as "a waist-high case or stand on the deck of a ship, generally mounted in front of the helmsman, in which navigational instruments are placed for easy and quick reference as well as to protect the delicate instruments." So there you go

Ships navigating the canal would be under their own steam with a Ship canal pilot and helmsman aboard, a screw tug ahead and a paddle or screw tug astern to help manoeuvre, keep the ship in line and slow down when needed.

After 30 years as helmsman with SFF favourites The Oysterband, John Jones has teamed up with friends old and new to explore and re-invent some of the classic traditional songs he loved in his youth. 'Rising Road' is the name of the show and newly released CD. An excellent set from the Bellstone Tent.
Shrewsbury Folk Festival (SFF) was held 26th to 29th August 2022 at the Showground in Shrewsbury in Shropshire hosting acts from the United Kingdom and abroad. Tickets could be purchased at the gate and this practice will hopefully continue next year.

THE ALLIED FLEETS. FETES AT CHERBOURG.
THE long talked of meeting between the British and French fleets has at length taken place. The English fleet left Portland Roads on the 13th August, and arrived in the offing at Cherbourg on the 14th, and its reception by the French squadron was of the most gratifying character. Fort Roule, the citadel on the heights overhanging the commercial port, the batteries on the Digne, and the guns of the ships poured forth a thundering welcome, which was taken up and repeated to the echo by the masses of people who clustered on the piers, the jetties, the quays, the steam-boats, and every available craft that could float upon the water. Only three ironclads - the Magenta, the Heroine, and the Flandre - were assembled to meet their English allies, but it was expected that a much larger display of force would be made when the combined squadrons arrived.
The British ironclads reached Brest on the forenoon of August 21, after a detention at Jersey in consequence of injuries sustained by two of the vessels of the fleet.
The Moniteur describes the circumstances which led to the mutual visits of the French and English squadrons, and adds -" England desired that her fleet should be present at Cherbourg on the 15th of August, and France cannot but congratulate herself upon the sentiments of friendship and courtesy which suggested this thought to the British Government.
