Poop Deck Wheel and Compass..
Wikipedia Quote:-
A poop deck is a deck that forms the roof of a cabin built in the rear, or "aft", part of the superstructure of a ship.
The name originates from the French word for stern, la poupe, from Latin puppis. Thus the poop deck is technically a stern deck, which in sailing ships was usually elevated as the roof of the stern or "after" cabin, also known as the "poop cabin". In sailing ships, with the helmsman at the stern, an elevated position was ideal for both navigation and observation of the crew and sails.
On modern, motorized warships, the ship functions which were once carried out on the poop deck have been moved to the bridge, usually located on the superstructure in the center of the ship or the island on the starboard side in the case of aircraft carriers. Un Quote.

Nationaal Koopvaardijmonument / National Merchant Navy Monument
“De Boeg” (The Bow) is a war memorial in Rotterdam. It commemorates the 3,500 crew members of Dutch merchant ships who lost their lives in the Second World War. Fred Carasso's monument was unveiled by Princess Margriet on the corner of Boompjes and Leuvehaven on April 10, 1957. The 46 meter high aluminum construction symbolizes a bow in the concrete waves. Later, on July 15, 1965, an 8 meter high bronze sculpture group was added to the monument: a helmsman, three sailors and one drowned. On the side is the text: "They kept course".

The vessel is approved to transport nuclear waste, but wasn't at the time of the collision.
The mainsheet leads from the mast back under the seat to a cam cleat, where it is easily handled by the helmsman. Note metal bracket and bolt to hold the leeboard. The leeboard is swung up out of the water when beaching or when sailing downwind.

In this scene the bench seat is reversed, allowing the helmsman to monitor and communicate with those at the stern. Another nice feature is the dual rail breaks on the port and starboard side directly behind the spring cleat. These opening similar to the one forward allow for easy boarding without the danger of straddling a safety rail.

The inscription is taken from Psalm 107, verse 23, line 24, which reads as follows:
"They that go down to the sea in ships,
That do business in great waters;
These see the works of the Lord,
And his wonders in the deep."
The sculptor was Leonard Craske and the dedication was August 23, 1925. The bronze monument consists of a nearly square base of sea green granite, carried from the famous "Blood Ledge" in the Bay View section of Gloucester. The stone is cut with a rough finish to typify the rugged character of the figure, with a single panel on the front holding the bronze letters of inscription, "They that go down to the sea in ships". 1623 - 1923.
The pose chosen is that of a helmsman bringing his craft up as close hauled to the wind as possible to clear some dangerous rocks, his eyes being fixed on the sails to detect the first indication that they are beginning to spill the wind, every muscle being strained to hold the wheel firmly until the peril is passed.
This is a memorial to all of the Gloucester fishermen who in years since Gloucester was settled in 1623 have lost their lives while fishing. It faces the outer harbor in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Candidly I search the boat drawn to the helmsman at the stern. Authority radiates
through timbers and sail. No truck for failure nor abandonment of post. A hard
impervious rock of a man, the master.
Huge knurled hands stand ready, eyes pierce the glinting eddies. All about the world
moves, making way for the stranger from the south. His presence settles the chop,
clouds part and sun no doubt.
The world moves on, I don’t. I sit gnome like contemplating the scene. Chain rattles,
splash as anchor is thrown. Hard men of salt look up from nets and pots, gauging
new arrivals and are found wanting.
