Cartopper isn't your normal dingy in some significant ways. In addition to her 'instant boat' ease of building she has a smallish centerboard located forward, just behind the mast, and an oversize rudder. The idea is to get a singlehanded helmsman into the middle of the craft (where the centerboard case would normally be) for proper trim. the large rudder shares the lateral force generated by the sail with the centerboard. The long tiller gives lots of leverage for the rudder, which it needs because of those lateral forces (she has lots of 'weather helm').

Tavares' shield for Alfa in a coma
OPINIONS

A shield from Stellantis to protect the former FCA Italian factories. Carlos Tavares, formerly at the helm of PSA, denies the fears of Italian workers and unions. He reassured the former FCA tricolor factories: "For Italy the good news is that Stellantis will act as a shield, as a protection for some factories, it does not represent a risk". The CEO of Stellantis, immediately after the formalization of the “equal merger” between the Peugeot group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, wanted to personally get to know the Italian plants.
He left his Paris headquarters for a trip to Italy. On 20 January he visited Mirafiori (the cradle of Fiat), on 21 Melfi (the most advanced and productive plant with Jeeps and the 500 X), on 22 Cassino (the plant in severe crisis for Alfa Romeo sales in dive). Accompanied by John Elkann, who passed from the presidency of FCA to that of Stellantis (the Agnelli family is the relative majority shareholder with 14.4% of the shares), he wanted to know the plants, speak with the workers, discuss with the trade unions.
Italian fears are strong: will Stellantis favor France, which is politically and economically stronger than our country? In the new auto giant, which also sees the presence as a shareholder of the French government but not the Italian one, will the interests of Paris prevail?
Tavares, aware of these fears, spoke of a Stellantis shield for Italy. He reiterated: "Our commitment to the merger is not to close any production plant" and "to safeguard all jobs". It wasn't so obvious. There are those who feared that the commitment to employment was above all valid for the French part of the new auto giant born from the marriage between FCA and PSA, the fourth largest group in the world with over 8 million cars produced every year.
The fear was there and is because many Italian factories are in trouble, the use of layoffs is high. Mirafiori produces the electric Fiat 500 and expects other models, Cassino works at just 15% -20% of production capacity. Giulia and the Suv Stelvio, the two models of the Biscione, are not good. Especially the Alfa Romeo Giulia suffered a slump in sales. Other models have not arrived and only now will production of the new Maserati SUV start in Cassino: Grecale, also built in the electric version.
Tavares judged Cassino's Alfa models to be of good quality but penalized by uncalibrated marketing. He announced a relaunch of Alfa Romeo and Maserati which ended up in dire straits due to the failure of the promised new models: «The very high value of these iconic brands must be recognized. We will make assessments to understand how to support their growth and profitable remedies ». The new helmsman of Stellantis did not give details on the future business plan, but made it clear that part of the 5 billion euros resulting from the synergies produced by the merger will go to investments in the Biscione and Trident brands. Another high-end model should arrive in Cassino after the Grecale.
Somehow Tavares seems to want to resume and implement Sergio Marchionne's plan for Italy: to ensure life and employment in the factories of the Peninsula by focusing on premium brands. In 2017 the then CEO of FCA announced: "From 2020 in Italy the group will only have premium productions, with the Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands". He motivated the choice: "Our way to live in globalization is in the creation of global brands such as Jeep and iconic premium brands such as Alfa and Maserati". Unfortunately it did not happen. Marchionne died suddenly in July 2018. FCA investments went above all for the Jeep and for the American factories of the group, the sales of the Biscione and the Trident (the models are built in Grugliasco) collapsed at a glance.
Tavares has already performed a miracle: it saved Peugeot and Citroen from bankruptcy by focusing on quality, innovation and competitiveness. He incorporated Opel into the PSA group, protecting employment. Now the problem of the many different brands to be reorganized and integrated, avoiding the risk of production overlaps, is being raised. There will be an initial response when it presents the first Stellantis industrial plan.

How did mariners ever find their way anywhere with paper charts, compasses and sextants?
Today's electronic chart plotters simplify navigation so that the crew can focus on other matters. However, except when the ship was on the open ocean, the MV Monte Rosa's steering system was not linked to the chart plotter. As in days of yore, the officer on the bridge would call out course changes to the helmsman, who would confirm them.
As I recall, in the end we actually stayed closer to the coast of South America because we had a very favorable stern current.

Screw that "Galaxy Quest" Peter Quincy Taggart guy!
So, for an appalling amount of money (well, $18) you can get a photo of yourself taken on the bridge set, with cardboard cutout original cast members matted in afterward. I must confess that sitting in that chair was pretty cool. Wes is doing his best Uhura "Hailing frequencies open" pose.
(Hey, who's that hottie at the helm?)
...then this common eider, would probably be yelling:
"You stupid idiot! You should have turned THAT way!"
The ship in the background is the "MCL Trader", which ran aground on a sandbar at the Danish island Bornholm.
According to the police in Rønne, the blood alcohol level of the helmsman was 2,38 0/00 when the accident occurred.
The vessel is approved to transport nuclear waste, but wasn't at the time of the collision.
SAN DIEGO (August 23, 2013) Seaman Jacob Whitfield steers the ship as he stands helmsman watch on the bridge of the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4). USS Boxer is currently underway for a regularly scheduled deployment as part of the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (BOXARG), comprised of USS Boxer, amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18), the amphibious dock landing ship USS Harper’s Ferry (LSD 49) and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). FOST’s training is designed to prepare all types of navy vessels and auxiliaries for peacetime, peace-support, and war-fighting operations. I spent two years on this little vessel, my father was on it for 17 years...very uncomfortable at sea, the only ship I have been on with a safety belt for the helmsman...and we had to wear it some times, the rolling action light ship was huge.

Located across from the Tiananmen-style people’s park, the statue stands with his arm raised to welcome all who come to visit the city. Usually the sighting of a Mao statue within China is nothing worth noting, but this particular location in the heart of China’s biggest autonomous region is just too awkward to miss. It’s symbolism is too pertinent to ignore.
It comes as no surprise that the idea to build a giant Mao statue in Kashgar came during China’s Cultural Revolution. In one of the few cities that still boasts a majority of Uyghur and other ethnic minorities, it’s hard to miss the intended message. The year was 1968 and tensions were high in Xinjiang just like they were in every part of China . The leaders at the time decided that the best way to declare their allegiance to Beijing was to build one of the largest statues of Mao in the country.
Statues cost money, though, and anybody who has been to Kashgar can attest that they are not known for their vast financial resources. The city government reported that every citizen willingly donated what they could to help fund the building of Kashgar’s Mao statue, whether that be cash from their meager salary or food stamps that were prevalent during the Cultural Revolution. You can judge for yourself whether willingly is the correct term to use here. Stories were told of people young an old who gave beyond their means, all for the sake of the “Great Helmsman”.
Finding building materials in a desert oasis proved to be even harder than raising the money needed to buy it. Once all funds were secured it was then sent to inland China where a total of 16 trucks transported different parts of the mold through Gansu and around the Taklamakan Desert to Kashgar along roads that would barely be considered passable today. Craftsmen worked for months to complete what would become one of the four biggest Mao statues in all of China, finally finishing the task sometime in 1969 to the applause of controlled fanfare.
The statue stands a total of 24 meters high – 11.74 meters for the base and 12.26 meters for the body (a nod to the Chairman’s December 26th birthday) and faces south with his right arm extended. To say that this has been a beloved monument for the city of Kashgar might be a stretch, but it has become a well-known landmark. Attempts to take down the statue over the past few decades – either by force or through proper petitions – have failed and are not well documented, however damages sustained by the statue did eventually force the city to refurbish it in 1997. While they were at it they decided to add a grandstand along with a 62-meter long wall on which was written many of Mao’s poem’s.

Any Jaguar XK120 Roadster is a desirable car but those boasting period competition history are particularly sought after. This right-hand drive example was supplied new via Henlys of London during November 1950. Migrating to Cornwall thereafter, the two-seater was campaigned by amateur racing driver and power boat helmsman David A. Kempthorne-Ley Esq in a variety of events. As well as taking class honours at the August 3rd 1959 Trengwainton Speed Hill Climb, it contested the gruelling Land's End Trial some two years later. Extensively restored by A.B. Price between 1988 and 1995 sporting a extensively overhauled replacement engine, the Jaguar has been further improved since entering the current ownership some five years ago. Upgraded with a Broadsport five-speed manual gearbox, 9.5-inch diaphragm clutch, halogen headlamps, front disc brakes and Pirelli Cintuaro radial tyres, the XK120 was also treated to a bare metal respray by Body Beautiful Cars Ltd in 2011.
The car is offered with a variety of spares including many of its original components such as its fours speed gearbox.
A ship with a helmsman and four oarsmen. Buildings are depicted above. A commercial transaction may be going on.
The Santa Maria, of course, is well-known to schoolkids--she was the flagship of Christopher Columbus' first expedition to the New World...even if he was looking for China.
Not much is known about the Santa Maria, as few records have survived of her, but she was a carrack (also known as a nau) that served as merchant ships and occasionally warships in the Late Middle Ages. It was not a large ship at all, only 58 feet long, which is shorter than many yachts and fishing boats today. However, its three masts, triangular sails, and hull design made it a good oceangoing ship, which was why Columbus chose it as his flagship, along with the smaller caravels, the Nina and Pinta.
The Santa Maria carried Columbus to the Western Hemisphere, but not home; on the night of Christmas Eve, an inexperienced helmsman put her on a sandbar in what is today Haiti. Unable to extricate the ship, Columbus dismantled most of it and turned it into a fort. He would take the Nina back home to Spain. Only her anchor survives to modern times, on display at Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
Dad built this model (I believe from an old Lindberg kit) for the local Knights of Columbus chapter. The quote reads "And the sea will grant each man new hope, as sleep brings dreams of home," was attributed to Columbus; moviegoers might recognize it as the quote Marko Ramius uses in the movie version of "The Hunt for Red October." This is a scan from an old picture, so I don't know what happened to the model.
Australian navy Leading Seaman Dave Finney, left, and Leading Seaman Graham Rigby communicate with the helmsman while manning the machinery control room aboard the landing ship heavy HMAS Tobruk (L 50), at sea in the Pacific Ocean July 26, 2008, during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise. RIMPAC, the world's largest multinational exercise, is scheduled biennially by the U.S. Pacific Fleet in the Hawaiian operating area. RIMPAC 2008 includes participants Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, the Netherlands, Peru, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States.
