Back then, artists found inspiration in the world of famous courtesans, geishas and the Yoshiwara pleasure district in ancient Edo. But in the 20th century, the prints were founded on Western academic practices: from now on, they were drawn in the studio from live models.

foreword by the author(a rough translation of the latter half, the second of two pages):

taste/style is the quintessence of writing.

writing without taste/style is like sunshine without warmth. it won't have any value.

i don't care how these pieces would be interpretated by their readers.

but if this book were blamed to have corruptive influence on any of the young reader's taste, it will be a shame for the rest of the author's life.

i didn't take the risk of publishing "Uzurakago" for my fame.

it is because i am convinced that these pieces would never corrupt the young people's tastes at all.

The unusual long and narrow format emphasises the model's slender figure and her undergarment, accentuated by karazuri printing: the printer creates a relief in the paper without applying colour. A technique often used to render textile patterns.

i) OKanada – kontrovers Akademie der Künste – West-Berlin, by Michael Nungesser (pp.174-177; exhibition review with passing reference p.176 to "B.P. Nicol" as contributor to Larry Rosnuk's Ein Geschenk project)

___________________________

• a machine-translation of the relevant portion of Nungesser's text:

"Another way to counteract the official spectacle was undertaken by the Canadian artist Larry Rosnuk, who lives alternately in Canada and Chamonix (France). He is a member of the Southern Edge Art Gallery in Port Colborne near Niagara Falls, founded by artists last year. In August 1982, he wrote to around 100 Canadian artists, from Michael Snow and Riopelle to art students, and sent them a Gestetner wax matrix. He asked them to draw something on it and then return it to him. With the help of a contribution of $40 for each artist, the works were to be reproduced and distributed as gifts to the population in both parts of Berlin. Twelve artists responded, including Dennis Lukas, B.P. Nicol, Marc St. Martin, Felix Forte, and Mary Prittie. In December 1982, Rosnuk personally came to West Berlin and had a print run of 1,000 of all the works produced.

On one day, around 50 helium-filled balloons, each containing a set of the works, were sent over the Wall at Kreuzberg's Mariannenplatz as a greeting to the East Berlin population. A large portion of the remaining print run was lowered as a rain of leaves from West Berlin's Europa Center, an office tower next to the Memorial Church. In this way, the Canadian artists addressed a general foreign audience for the first time in a self-determined action, albeit with small participation. This cross-border action is a remarkable step for Canada, where artists readily rely on state aid."

The larger of the two elephants, the one with the 2 tusks, was felled by Delia "Mickie" Akeley (1875-1970). As described by Ms Akeley " He was a splendid elephant, standing ten feet ten inches tall at the shoulders and carrying 180 pounds of ivory. In his back was a great festering wound caused by a poisonous spear. The iron blade had worked its way into his flesh to his rib and he must have suffered agonies."
