I think we may have did some permanent damage to our cardiovascular system; but it was worth it!

The paper on which the prints are printed is quite thick and therefore absorbs more, creating special effects and deeper colours. This print was only printed in 1952.

Woman Appplying Color to Her Lips (Portrait of Chiyo, a Maiko of Gion, Kyoto)

Japanese, Taishô era, 1920 (Taishô 9), February

Artist: Hashiguchi Goyô, Japanese, 1881–1921

Woodblock print; ink, color, and mica on paper

Although the colour palette of the prints is rather limited, often up to 20 printing runs are needed for one print (one run for each colour). The artists' greatest challenge lies in the subtle skin colours.

Nigiri sushi [握り寿司] is the non-roll type sushi (i.e. the salmon nigiri on the far left). Maki sushi [巻き寿司] are the ones prepared using a roller (typically made of bamboo) in which as a result you get sushi rolls.

Many would be in disbelief to see this. Maybe I'm not so bad with cats afterall.

kusa awase is a sort of game popular among the aristocrats in Heian era(9th century). they bring along various plants and compare eachother to vie the winner. the idea of the game is reflected into the design of this book.

for this facsimile edition, glossy transparent ink and silk screen technique were used to recreate the surface of Japanese lacquer, which had been used to print the black part of the original binding. to use lacquer in printing was the designer Hashiguchi's idea. this was rare and thought to be very inovative idea then(and today).

Artist Goyo Hashiguchi works from models, a method that has certainly contributed to the exceptional quality of his prints. He provides his beauties with lifelike features and has a thorough understanding of anatomy.
