Halogen light bulb shot at 1/4000th of a second. Even at the fastest shutter speed of my camera, the coiled tungsten filament is just a blob of white light. If you zoom in, though, you can see the coil in the reflection.
I had my sunglasses on for this one, and a classic Simpsons quote in my head:

Yes, I know I'm breaking some of the rules with this photo, but I thought I'd post it here anyway because I was inspired to shoot this after reading the stuff on Strobist.
I added this to the Strobist pool months after I first took it, but I did so because this, technically, is my first attempt at controlling off-camera light. I've got a few more photos taken with similar set-ups, but I'll leave those ones off the Strobist pool.
As the photographer in the family, I have been given the job of photographing items to be sold on the family business website www.thegeniescave.co.uk or on eBay under the name of the_genies_cave. There is quite a bit of variety (if you think about what might be found in a cave belonging to a genie!) and I quite enjoy doing it. This image was taken using a small light tent illuminated by a pair of halogen lamps of the type commonly found in bathroom or kitchen ceilings.

Halogens on, then the overhead florescents. Now that the days are darker I find myself plugging in more lights for the detail work.
With the baseboard removed, you can see that they purposely didn't wet plaster all the way down so you could run electrical wire between the studs. I thought this was ingenious because it helped us tremendously.
One of our more adventurous DIY projects. We demo'd the sagging wet plaster ceiling in the living room, retaining the coved ceiling by using a RotoZip spiral saw around the perimeter to get a clean cut through the plaster and lathe. Then we installed 10 small halogen recessed lights, drywall, two wall switches and two wall sconces--all in four weekends. Weekend one - demolish; weekend two - wire; weekend three - install drywall. We hired someone to do the mudding. Then the following weekend we painted.
Halogen lights in. Made a right mess of the recently skimmed ceiling though - but that was a bonus when the plasterer had a bit of spare time waiting for the plaster on the bricked up door & window to dry. So just need to make good now with a bit of Pollyfilla - hopefully that'll look OK.
This Lighthouse was opened by Mr G O H Giles MP, Member for Wakefield on behalf of the Minister for Transport the Hon R J D Hunt MP, 29 September 1980. It has been an active unmanned light since that day.
The area is known for the treacherous Troubridge Shoal and nearby Marion Reef which by 1911 had claimed nineteen ships and a great loss of life.
It was built after a decision to downgrade the lighthouse on Troubridge Island to a low-powered automatic operation. The Troubridge Island light is now decommissioned.
Special wedge shaped clay bricks were custom made to build this unusual and unique conical lighthouse with balcony and lantern, it has never been rendered or painted. It is a distinct land mark on the peninsula.
It is designed to be resistant to high winds and earthquakes: in the twentieth century the area experienced numerous earthquakes.
Measuring 32 metres high, Troubridge Hill Lighthouse has a light range of 22 nautical miles and operates off mains electricity with a backup diesel alternator.
The brickwork construction system was innovative and earned an award from the South Australian Brick Association for an outstanding application of clay brickwork.
As it was intended for automatic operation the tower has no windows: it opened 1980 with the following technical details : -

Halogens – Modern halogens are now more efficient, giving off an improved light output which they maintain overtime without fading. The issue with halogens is that they produce more heat than incandescent and are the culprit behind many fires. However, the technology with halogen is improving to avoid issues that come with it.

6000K 55W HID vs. 4300K SilverStar Ultra.
The other ballast arrived DOA, and I will get getting a working one in a few weeks. No, I am not running with two color temperature headlights - I have replaced the halogen for now.
The SilverStar is about 2x brighter than stock, and the HID is about 5x brighter than the SilverStar.
HIDs are from VVME. Parking lights are also SilverStar.
The most powerful halogen lamp in a mid configuration. It burns very bright but also very hot! This size of lamp should only be used when travelling at speed so as to keep it cool. Failure to do so could result in the lamp unit burning out.

It's hard to see as my camera is not picking up the subtle light differences, but the Halogen has warm color, with more intensity, and the LED is a cool (bluish) color with less intensity

The Verdict?
If you want quality light, stick with your halogens and replace them when the technology is better.
If you're into saving energy as a primary, and have a few bucks to spare, change out LEDs as your halogens burn out. Quite likely the $30 spent on each bulb won't equate a change in your energy bill when you average it out, so use up existing Halogens first. Also price should come down over the years.
If you have new bulbs to put in, or are very serious about greening up the place, go with LEDs.
