Facing west: The mantle (covered up) with all the lights installed and turned on. This was just before the drywall installation. We actually needed that 500 watt halogen torchiere to illuminate the room it was so dark with that exposed ceiling.
One of our more adventurous DIY projects. We demo'd the sagging wet plaster ceiling in the living room, retaining the coved ceiling by using a RotoZip spiral saw around the perimeter to get a clean cut through the plaster and lathe. Then we installed 10 small halogen recessed lights, drywall, two wall switches and two wall sconces--all in four weekends. Weekend one - demolish; weekend two - wire; weekend three - install drywall. We hired someone to do the mudding. Then the following weekend we painted.

This Lighthouse was opened by Mr G O H Giles MP, Member for Wakefield on behalf of the Minister for Transport the Hon R J D Hunt MP, 29 September 1980. It has been an active unmanned light since that day.
The area is known for the treacherous Troubridge Shoal and nearby Marion Reef which by 1911 had claimed nineteen ships and a great loss of life.
It was built after a decision to downgrade the lighthouse on Troubridge Island to a low-powered automatic operation. The Troubridge Island light is now decommissioned.
Special wedge shaped clay bricks were custom made to build this unusual and unique conical lighthouse with balcony and lantern, it has never been rendered or painted. It is a distinct land mark on the peninsula.
It is designed to be resistant to high winds and earthquakes: in the twentieth century the area experienced numerous earthquakes.
Measuring 32 metres high, Troubridge Hill Lighthouse has a light range of 22 nautical miles and operates off mains electricity with a backup diesel alternator.
The brickwork construction system was innovative and earned an award from the South Australian Brick Association for an outstanding application of clay brickwork.
As it was intended for automatic operation the tower has no windows: it opened 1980 with the following technical details : -

For times when the clamp lights just aren't enough, I've got these halogen work lights. Halogen lights are bright and cheap. They are also very hot and give off an odd color cast. So, if you decide to go this way, be sure to do custom white balance and be prepared to deal with the heat. Another drawback, even with a total of 1500 watts of power, these things are not suitable for portraiture. The light is just not enough and is way to harsh. I frequently find myself draping thin diffusing material (fabric remnants from WalMart) over a stand 2-3 feet away from the light. Not nearly enough diffusion. I have been thinking about building light boxes for them, but I just don't know how good that's going to work. So... yeah, very limiting.
The girls' friend, Yvonne, spent the night a few weeks ago. What do girls do at a slumber party?? Among other things, they play dress-up... and then they have a photoshoot.
This series of shots was taken of Yvonne, using a halogen lamp, black background, cardboard gobo used as a barn door, and a foam-core reflector.
My first attempt at using a black background for still life. Light is from a cheap halogen angle poise lamp.
The LEDs used on UP's access lights make an interesting effect as the MPRSS pulls into the siding left of the dead MSSPR, trying to get above 80psi on the train line. About 25 minutes later they discovered a way to get around the problem, and limped their way down to Butler.
This was how things were in about 2007. LED lights were... expensive and crap.
The halogen is on the left and cost about $5. The LED on the right cost about $80.
I wanted to like LEDs, but they were years away from being any good and/or affordable.

Didn't want to go outside today so this is a shot of one of my lamps. The bulb is halogen and it's light is quite white. However for some reason the reflective dome came out golden.
The bulb on the left is a GU10 halogen type spotlight, I have three of these in a fixture, this forms the fish house main lights. Each runs at 50w for a total of 150w for the fitting. The bulb on the right is a GU10 direct led replacement, it runs at 1.3w for a total of 3.9w for the fitting. They are of equal brightness, maybe even the LEDs have the edge! The plan, I have switched over to the led bulb, this will follow suit around the various illuminated tanks in the fish house, the combined total power saving means I can run the reef power free (from a certain perspective, that is it will not cost any extra!) In fact I'll have some spare watts to play with. How brilliant is that!

Ed Pink has been building racing engines since 1946, and Ed Pink Racing Engines — the company he founded in 1958 — has enjoyed success in nearly every form of motor sports over the past 56 years.
When the time came to replace the outdated fluorescent lighting in their assembly and design areas where an eclectic combination of state-of-the-art precision equipment and machinery are used, Ed Pink Racing Engines turned to LEDtronics. Not only did LED lights provide more and brighter illumination, but they did so with dramatically lower energy consumption and producing only a fraction of the heat of fluorescents.
"The lighting is much better for our unique work environment," says General Manager Frank Honsowetz, former director of racing for Nissan North America who joined Ed Pink in 2001. "We are saving about $900 a month from the conversion to LED lighting," he notes. "At this rate, we will pay for the conversion in about 13 months."
The company’s existing lighting system consisted of 17 high-output T12 and T8 fixtures of 4 tubes, each consuming 115 watts; with ballasts using 30W per fixture, the setup demanded over 8330 watts of energy to operate.
"We replaced the older technology with 13 LED high-bay luminaires at 200W each, offering a brighter workshop illumination with almost 70% less energy consumption," says Mark Jarel, LEDtronics Street & Outdoor Lighting Product Sales Manager who is himself an avid sports car collector. "Using a total of only 2,600 watts, the LED lights saved the company 5,730 watts."

FGR today requested that we go high-key. Generally speaking, that means reduced contrast and shadows are suppressed. The problem, of course, is that I am very tanned and nearly ruddy, so I am just not a candidate to do a good high-key self-portrait. It doesn’t help that I forgot to over expose. Oops.
So, I turned these into decent B/W SPs and am calling it a day. I liked this as an SP, so I am posting it too. :-)
Strobist info: I pulled out the big guns today to have my shadows “suppressed”. I have a pair of IKEA Halogen Desk Lamps a foot from my face. The 430EX is behind me, blasting out the wall and killing shadows there. The overall effect is nice, but not high-key. Drat.
After pulling apart my old halogen desk lamp I started experimenting with it. This is one of the experiments submerging the bulb in water, to try to diffuse the bright light. As the bulb heats up it causes the water around to evaporate creating a small amount of steam. As long as everything is correctly insulated this is quite safe and has potential to give some really interesting effects.

So, I thought of this assignment because I was trying to do a project for a picture to hang in our kitchen, but I didn't actually get around to that, but instead ended up with two different pieces of wall art.
Anyways, came up with this idea while talking to a friend about the assignment. Normally I hate when a picture is out of focus, and I don't know if this one qualifies for that, but I tried to get as much of the shadow in focus as possible. Please feel to criticize it as that's how I learn.
WIT: My beautiful wife held a 500W halogen lamp to get the shadow (I learned from previous times having her help to nail down my exposure before asking for her help! :P ) In Lightroom 2 I changed to grayscale, cropped and adjusted contrast.
Look how I spent the day. Plus, an upcoming letter in the Alphabet will address this. Our friends got Lingenberry soda. No meatballs this trip. =(
