Some weeks ago, as I started planning Froggie's MOT preparations, I spotted signs of corrosion on the headlamp reflectors. You didn't notice much, actually driving her at night, because the lights are (yet another) modification from standard spec: halogen bulbs in place of the feeble originals, powered by the biggest battery we could fit into the 1950s-sized (ie vast) battery tray, and the last charged by a high-output military-spec alternator. So, even corroded, the actual light output was still significantly better than well-preserved originals.
I stopped off at the excellent Land-Rover parts stockist in Exeter, on my way into work the other Friday, and they had the replacement kit on the shelf at a very reasonable cost.
And this is just how bad they can get, and still be better than the originals: they fell to bits as they were removed.

As the photographer in the family, I have been given the job of photographing items to be sold on the family business website www.thegeniescave.co.uk or on eBay. There is quite a bit of variety (if you think about what might be found in a cave belonging to a genie!) and I quite enjoy doing it.

You can ask for a showcase lamp - the kit (bulb + white cable adapter + brown case/cone with stand) will cost you 150/- INR and the height of the lamp is less than 3 INCHES.
White cable adapter which connect to the halogen bulb is only 10-12 cms long and you will need extra cable for sure. I have used 2 layers of bond paper here as diffuser. On usage the lamp gets hot - take a break every 5-10 min.
The light has a temperature of 3000K - Or you choose INCANDESCENT as White Balance for the right colors. The light box was placed at a distance of 1+ feet in all the shots shown below.
GOOD LUCK

Synthetic Corundum - Halogen White Light
From a friend comes this 2" wide specimen of synthetic corundum. It's red under incandescent light, amber under white LED and green under compact fluorescent.

Two photographs of diffraction grating spectra of a tungsten halogen fibre-optic lamp with a cooling 'daylight' blue filter. This has a stronger near infrared emission spectrum than the LED lamp.
Both photographs are taken with a ‘full-spectrum’ converted Sony alpha 7R II camera. The left frame is through an external Kolari Vision ‘hot-mirror’ filter which restores the camera to normal colour imaging. The right frame has the filter removed to provide a wide spectrum image limited by the spectral sensitivity of the back-illuminated CMOS sensor of this camera.
The blazed reflection grating is shown at the top left of the frames and this is illuminated from the bottom right. The zeroth order (undispersed) reflection is to the upper right. The reddish cast of the right image is due to the fact that all the pixels of the Bayer mask covering the sensor transmit some near-infrared light beyond our visible range. The red pixels leak more than the green and blue ones, see: www.ir-photo.net/ir_imaging.html
In addition to the red cast, it is apparent that the red sector is much broader than on the left hand visible light image.
Lighting: halogen 500w industrial lamp behind potplant to subjects left (for shadows). 500w photoflood on floor at 45 degree angle plus ambient light.
This is part of a project that I have just started. The aim is to capture the emotions of subjects as the read various letters. In this one I asked Dean to imagine he was reading a Dear John.
I'm influenced by Gregory Crewdson and the Twilight series - I admit - but I am English and wanted to capture the feel of something wicked this way comes but in a gothic-style.

Spent about 3 hours this afternoon tearing my hands all to pieces trying to switch out the original equipment headlight bulbs for Philips Crystal Vision Ultra headlight bulbs. I had them in my Honda Civic and they were awesome lights, much brighter than stock and much whiter light, with a very slight blue tint. Several people commented that they look like HID headlights, but they're just really good halogens. You can clearly see their much whiter than the foglights which are still the stock bulbs. The fact that you have to go through the wheel well through an opening in the fender that's barely big enough for my hand to squeeze through and then feel your way around the housing trying to switch these headlight bulbs out, made this a task that I hope I don't have to do for another several years!

The illusion of red hot glowing coils inside a siphon coffee brewer.
It's an illusion because the coils are illuminated by a halogen beam heater, but aren't actually glowing red with heat. This photo was heavily manipulated in photoshop - colour balance skewed way over to the blue spectrum (turning a warm white ceiling this shade of green) and contrast, saturation and other elements tweaked.

I recently aquired a reichert reflected light wafer inspection microscope. One of my biggest beefs with these otherwise amazing scopes is the light source. The huge hot nasty yellow orange tungsten halogen bulb is a real drawback. I replaced the bulb with a Cree XM-L high power white LED which can sink up to 3A (though my current supply can only source 2A).
I think the only real drawback is the dome lens which would make a great lamp, but a lousy directional light. Still, I can't complain the thing is crazy bright.
