Lori Deiter and I planned to hike the Falls Trail on Feb 1st... It was decided to hike in from Rte 118 up to Onondaga Falls on Glen Leigh. Mark Van Scyoc and his friend, Doug Reese met us in the parking lot and we hiked up together to B. Reynolds and they left to hike up to the base of Ganoga Falls. My favorite / highlight of the day was the ice leading up to and around Ozone Falls - awesome.

There are sign-in sheets (Rte 118 and Lake Jean - so they know who and how many are on the trail in case of an accident) to fill out.. And you should have these items to safely hike the Falls Trail during Winter: Crampons, Ice Axe and Rope (~ 30ft). At the very minimum, Trekking Poles and Micro Spikes / Ice Cleats for your hiking boots. Trying to hike in sneakers is NOT advisable!

Our Lady & The English Martyrs, Cambridge

stepneyrobarts.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/our-lady-english-ma...

Yesterday I revisited St Peter for internals and finished of Cambridge, visiting seven Victorian built churches only one of which, Our Lady & The English Martyrs, is worth writing up.

At first sight I wrote OLEM off as a Victorian Gothic monstrosity but as I wandered around the exterior I was struck by the quality of the building and the interior stunned me with lots of rather good glass and impressive architecture (oh and apart from three revisits, Babraham, Guilden Morden and Stow cum Quy, that finished the north west quadrant).

The Church of Our Lady and the English Martyrs, or OLEM, is situated in the heart of the city of Cambridge. An imposing example of the 19th Century Gothic Revival, it was built to the designs of Dunn & Hansom of Newcastle between 1885 and 1890, and founded solely by Mrs Yolande Marie Louise Lyne-Stephens, a former ballet dancer at the Paris Opera and Drury Lane, London, and widow of a wealthy banker. She promised to build the church on the feast of Our Lady of the Assumption, and Monsignor Christopher Scott - the first Rector - also wished to commemorate the Catholic Martyrs who died between 1535 and 1681, over thirty of whom had been in residence at the University.

Designed by architects Dunn and Hansom of Newcastle and built by the Cambridge firm of Rattee and Kett, OLEM is constructed in Casterton, Ancaster and Combe Down Stone. The church is a traditional cruciform structure in the early-decorated style with a large tower at the crossing, a polygonal apse and a west bell tower with a 65-metre spire, visible for miles around Cambridge. Quite often, it is quoted by visitors and local residents as a location point. The approximate internal dimensions of the church are: length 48 meters [156 ft] width across the aisles 16 meters [51 ft] width at the transepts 22 meters [71 ft], the height of the nave 15 meters [71ft].

Inside and over the west door stands the figure of Our Lady of the Assumption crowned with lilies and standing on the crescent moon with the vanquished serpent beneath. The west window shows the English Martyrs arranged in two principal groups, the clergy on the south side with St John Fisher in their midst and the laity on the north grouped round St Thomas More.

Beside the South aisle is an ancient statue of Our Lady with the Child Jesus. This statue is understood to be a gift in 1850 from Emmanuel College, which was built on the site of a Dominican Priory dating back to 1274. The Church of the Black Friars of Cambridge contained a statue of Our Blessed Lady to which much pilgrimage was had. Although unconfirmed this could be that statue.

The Chapel of the Holy Souls with the book of Remembrance is located at the west end of the south aisle. The sculpture above the altar depicts the solace and relief of the Holy Souls in Purgatory through the intercession of Our Lady and the angel who comforted Our Lord in Gethsemane. The Chapel is now appropriately used at the two great Christian celebrations: at Easter for the Empty Tomb indicating the Risen Lord, and at Christmas for the Crib.

The aisle windows were almost completely destroyed when the church was struck by a bomb on 1941, but were subsequently replaced in their original form. They epitomise the various sufferings of the English Martyrs, their being brought before the Council, racked, hung, drawn and quartered in the sight and sympathy of the faithful. The windows of the north aisle portray Carthusians, St Thomas Moore, B. Margaret Pole and others, while the south aisle is made a “Fisher Aisle”, devoted to scenes from the life of St John, Cardinal Bishop of Rochester, who in so many important ways is identified with Cambridge.

The best general impression of the interior is obtained from the gateway in the iron screen dividing the nave from the ante-chapel. The heads of the four great preachers of Our Lady’s Graces are carved in the four corners of the nave. The windows along the nave represent saints connected with the Church in Britain, arranged approximately in chronological order from east to west with a few additional figures in the eastern windows.

The Rood which is between the nave and the sanctuary is of the type known as “Majestas”; the figure of Our Lord, with glorified wounds, robed in alb, stole and pallium [as High Priest] and crowned [as King “reigning from the Tree”]. This was the earliest type of crucifix; the realistic figure, now almost universal, did not come into general use until the beginning of the thirteenth century. The cross, inspired by that at Nuremberg, is about 6 metres high, carved in oak; the figures of Christ and of Our Lady and of Saint John are of Kauri pine. They were carved locally by Mr. B. Maclean Leach and completed and blessed in 1914.

Beyond the present, modern altar is the High Altar with the relics of Saints Felix and Constantia, martyrs of the early Church. The tabernacle and ornaments of the altar are of exquisite French workmanship from Lyons. The baldacchino which covers the High Altar is similar to that over the tomb of Robert the Wise (1275-1343) at Santa Chiara, Naples. It is one of the earliest forms of adornment of a Christian altar. At the top is the figure of Our Lord in glory supported on each side by angels in act of adoration.

The design and the re-ordering of the sanctuary was done by Mr. Gerard Goalen of Harlow after the Second Vatican Council. On 7th April, 1973, Bishop Charles Grant consecrated the present central. The original High Altar has subsequently been used mainly for reservation of the Blessed Sacrament.

Our Lady of Lourdes & St Joseph, Leigh on Sea, Essex

Blog page

I passed OLoL&SJ (apologies for the acronym) on my way to St Clement and had to stop. This RC church had fallen off my radar and would have been missed had it not been so arresting.

Built in the 1920's to the design of the parish priest, Fr FW Gilbert, it stands as his personal testament to God. Full of good period glass, a very Catholic reredos, lectern and rood; unusually a SE tower but, to my mind, the most exceptional feature is the Lady Chapel which is a scaled replica of Lourdes.

A rich priest's homage to Gothic architecture with a distinct Catholic twist - I wish this was my parish church!

Neither Pevsner nor Mee covered it (inherent anti Catholicism at work?) so Taking Stock instead:

An idiosyncratic Gothic church of the 1920s, very much a personal work by the parish priest Fr F. W. Gilbert, but closely following the design of Charles Nicholson’s church of St Alban at Westcliff-on-Sea. The church was sympathetically extended in the 1960s. The interior is rich in fittings, some designed by Fr Gilbert.

The original church (now the parish hall) began life as a timber-framed, corrugated iron drill hall, originally built for the Essex Volunteers in 1900 under the supervision of Major Burles and purchased in 1913. The site of the present church was purchased by the Rev. F.W. Gilbert in 1924, using donations and his private money. It appears that Fr Gilbert acted as his own architect, his design borrowing heavily from that of the Anglican church of St Alban the Martyr at Westcliff-on-Sea, built in 1898-1908 from designs by Nicholson & Corlette. The Gilbert family promised £2,000 once building work commenced. The contract price was £12,234. The builders were Messrs Marshall & Smith of Grays but Fr Gilbert acted as his own clerk of works, using local labour, including unemployed men from Grays. The foundation stone was laid on 7 October 1924 and the church opened in September 1925. The presbytery was built in 1925.

The church was sympathetically extended in 1965-66 by Burles, Newton & Partners, in the same style and materials; the west wall was moved twenty feet further out to create a choir gallery, west door and porch and a baptistery with organ chamber above. Proposals to replace the old hall with a new and larger building were prepared in 2007 but have not yet been implemented.

The church is a large and handsome structure in a free Gothic style. The walls are faced with random rubble with stone dressings. Apparently much of the stone was quarried near Glasgow and was originally used as ballast in lighters intended for the Gallipoli campaign, which were later bought by a local ship owner, who donated the stone for the building of the church. The roof is covered in plain tiles. On plan the church comprises a long nave and sanctuary under a continuous roof swept down over north and south aisles, southwest porch, northwest organ chamber, southeast double transept and southeast tower. The gabled west end is Burles & Newton’s work of the 1960s and has a broad straight-headed doorway flanked by small trefoiled windows with a large six-light traceried window above. On the north side is a tall transeptal organ chamber and then the low side wall of the north aisle with three pairs of small trefoiled windows. On the south side is a small projecting porch and then the low side wall of the south aisle, a double transept with three-light traceried windows in the gabled ends and then the bold square south east tower. The tower is of three stages with a traceried two-light window on the south side of the lowest stage and pairs of small openings in the two stages above. The tower has a single large diagonal buttress at the southeast corner, crenellated flint-faced parapets and a tiled spirelet. The east end wall of the sanctuary is articulated with three round-headed blind arches. This wall fronts the garden of the large presbytery which is attached to the northeast corner of the church, and the church and presbytery together form a strong architectural composition.

The interior walls are all plastered and painted with plain flooring of timber. There is a west gallery in the 1960s extension and nave arcades of four bays of simple pointed chamfered arches on square chamfered concrete piers. Above each pier the nave is spanned by the tie beams of the roof and above them is a five-sided timbered ceiling. The aisles have lean-to roofs and are also timbered. The east bay on the south side is a small transept. There is no chancel arch in the usual sense, but the division between nave and sanctuary is marked by pilaster strips on the walls with a rood beam at half- height and a timber rib spanning the roof between them. The sanctuary has a single large open arch on each side and is richly furnished. The east wall in particular is lined to full-height with carved decoration. The floor is black and white marble. On the south side of the sanctuary is a second transept divided from the first by a double arch resting on dwarf double columns with ornamental Gothic capitals. In the east wall of this transept a chamfered pointed arch leads to the base of the tower which contains a Lourdes grotto.

The church is rich in fittings. These include the carved timber reredos filling the whole east wall, the extraordinary pulpit with figures of evangelists supported by cherubs, apparently designed by Fr Gilbert, who also designed the figures of the rood beam, the elaborate oak stalls in the sanctuary and the font at the west end of the nave given in memory of Col. Knight (d.1891) with its stone bowl on clustered columns and a surrounding floor of Cosmati work.

There is some stained glass in the church including the west window by Whitefriars and other windows by Goddard & Gibbs. The scale model of the Lourdes grotto was built by Cyril Psaila (d. 1931).

Introduction to AlgebraMathematics is a kind of subject without which any of the class syllabus is not furnished. It's the important topic and also the includes complex part of studies every time. Today we are going to take you on the ride of your journey throughout the schooling with mathematics but mainly we will discuss one of the mathematical branch rather than whole math content. Today's highlighted branch is Algebra, so let us start first with what Algebra is all about then go through the content which students need to learn till class 12th from their starting line. Algebra is preferred to be used as a tool to solve complex optimized techniques of solving mathematical queries. The problem is that Algebra is very vast itself, so until students not get aware from whole algebra concept till then he is not able to use its fundamentals as tool. Initial classes of students include introduction part of algebra and as they move towards their upper classes Algebra problems evaluation is the target for students and finally when they reach to 10 +2 class, that time their total past learning of algebra is needed to br compiled in a single form to implement the principles and formulas together in other applications solving.

From Edmunds (http://www.edmunds.com/ford/taurus/2008/review.html) -

What Edmunds.com says

The reborn 2008 Ford Taurus hits the dance floor with some fresh moves courtesy of a 263-horsepower V6. The engine upgrade, along with the Five Hundred's pre-existing comfortable cabin, cavernous trunk and top-notch safety scores, make the new Taurus a worthy candidate for a full-size sedan.

Pros

Extra-large backseat and trunk, outstanding crash test scores, comfortable ride, good visibility, available all-wheel drive.

Cons

High front seats create an odd driving position that might be uncomfortable for taller drivers, transmission occasionally slow to downshift.

What's New for 2008

Ford resurrects the Taurus nameplate for 2008 by affixing it to a much-improved Five Hundred. A more powerful engine, a nicer and quieter cabin, a retuned suspension and a corporate three-bar grille are the major highlights.

Introduction

Name recognition and awareness are no doubt important for automotive manufacturers. For example, look no further than the 2008 Ford Taurus. Ford has pulled the Taurus nameplate out of its one-year dirt nap in hopes of getting back into the thick of the large family sedan game. But is the public's awareness of the Taurus name a good thing or bad? Though a hero car back in the 1980s and early '90s, more recent iterations of the Taurus were dated and anonymous, a favorite of image-dulling rental car agencies and a not-so-favorite of middle management types who received them as company cars.

The Taurus revival is combined with the death of the Ford Five Hundred, a large sedan introduced a few years ago that never sold like the company had hoped. Although it offered a large cabin and an impressive ride and handling balance, the Five Hundred was let down by weak engine performance and a lack of refinement.

Thankfully, the 2008 Ford Taurus gains a number of improvements as part of its return. Under that familiar Five Hundred sheet metal are much improved running gear and additional features. In fact, Ford says there are more than 500 changes. A 263-hp V6 replaces the lame 203-hp V6, and a more responsive six-speed automatic replaces the sluggish continuously variable transmission (CVT) across all trim levels.

Other improvements for this large family sedan include the adoption of stability control, a "Ford Sync" system (that allows hands-free use of mobile phones and digital music players), improved cabin materials and more sound insulation for a quieter ride.

With its major performance infusion, addition of key safety and luxury features, and available all-wheel drive, the Ford Taurus is the best it's been in a long time. Given the Taurus' size (along with the fact that the Ford Fusion now battles stalwarts like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry), you'll probably want to cross-shop it against full-size sedans like the Chrysler 300, Hyundai Azera or Toyota Avalon. Though still slightly deficient in terms of style (compared to the 300) or all-around polish, the Taurus is certainly worth consideration.

Faiza passou a apresentar depressão, comportamento delirante persecutório e sintomas psicóticos from Ruim no Psicológico .por PRECONCEITO, BULLYING, INJUSTIÇA

- RIO SEM HOMOFOBIA from Ruim no Psicológico .por PRECONCEITO, BULLYING, INJUSTIÇA

(2005 DEFENSORIA PÚBLICA Faiza Khalida) from Ruim no Psicológico .por PRECONCEITO, BULLYING, INJUSTIÇA

Vivenciava o isolamento.

24- Procuradora Municipal Débora Fernandes C. Pinto (mat.

In 2014 I started working on a design for our #BritArmyAndFriends reunion at #SpaceFestVI

www.spacefest.info/VI/Over.html

Here is the collection of my brainstorming and the design process:

www.flickr.com/photos/spaceholix/sets/72157643534421185/

And additionally some background information:

My latest design features the #NebraSkydisk - one of the most beautiful, astronomical artefacts ever found - until today.

This is the oldest-known image of our cosmos so far, with an estimated age of 3600 years (!!!), the earliest known diagram of the heavens, which makes it one or may be THE most important archaeological discovery of the twenty-first century.

It was discovered on July 4th 1999 near the city of Nebra in Germany and since then fascinates not only the experts.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nebra_sky_disk

www.bibliotecapleyades.net/arqueologia/nebra_disk.htm

I have to admit that I fell in love with this beauty as soon as I heard about it several years ago.

And I always wanted to paint it one day.

So what better match could there be than combining this masterpiece, created by stargazers several thousand years ago, who loved observing (and already started understanding) our night sky,

with #SpaceFestVI, which will bring people together again, who come from all around the world to share their love of space and our beautiful blue marble … ?!

As my design project is an artistic realization for a private travel group, I was kindly given permission to integrate the #NebraSkydisk in my artwork.

Hence I have to emphasize that my artwork may ONLY be shared as per following license:

I herewith explicitly send my thanks to the

- THE STATE MUSEUM OF PREHISTORY IN HALLE / GERMANY -

and I will - as requested - gladly send pictures of my design as well as photos of #SpaceFestVI to the Museum for its collection/exhibition.

It is my pleasure to share the #NebraSkydisk far beyond the borders of Germany - especially during an event which only can take place, because some people started documenting their night-sky-observations thousands of years ago.

#OnceUponATime

One year ago, in April 2013 I was looking forward to an amazing event.

A group of #SpaceTweeps was planning to meet in Tucson / Arizona for #SpaceFestV ( www.spacefest.info/V/Astro.html )

Some of us had met each other in person earlier, some on Facebook several months in advance in a group called the #BritArmyAtSpacefest and some #HonoraryMembers joined our group at #SpaceFest itself.

This event turned out even better than I (and I guess many of us) ever could have imagined!

Meeting like-minded people with a great diversity of backgrounds and professions from literally all over the world in the middle of Arizona and sharing with them at least 4 days, while being amongst some of the most remarkable #SpaceLegends #MoonWalkers #MeteoriteMen #AsteroidHunters #Scientists and other #SPACEHOLIX was unforgettable.

www.flickr.com/photos/spaceholix/sets/72157635181483681/

Since that time our group is in regular contact (mostly via social media) and as we didn't want to wait a whole year for #SpaceFestVI , we got together again in November 2013 to share another great event:

We enjoyed our #ItIsStonegengeReunionOClock where our group of about 20 people had the pleasure to getting exclusive access in a private tour to the inner circle of the stones during sunset.

Surrounded by many other highlights and #MiniTweetups in UK this was a brilliant weekend.

Since then we are looking forward to our next reunion at #SpaceFestVI which will take place in Pasadena / California in May 2014 ( www.spacefest.info/VI/Astros.html )

What I had started in 2013 after getting back to painting after a very long time,

became kind of a tradition in the meantime:

Inspired by several #Space- and #ScienceTweetups I painted logos for every event I attended

and got them printed on badges for all participants and also some on t-shirts etc.

And 2013 has been quite a ride :-)

JPG Magazine - Issue 5: Photography is Not a Crime JPG Magazine is out with issue number 5 entitled, "Photography is Not a Crime."

This is a subject near and dear to my heart having had more than my fair share of run ins over the years with cops, security guards, and many other authority figures out there while documenting the world.

One of my photos appears in the magazine and I wrote up a brief essay on my experience when harrased for trying to shoot One Bush St. in San Francisco.

From JPGs website: "There's another example every day. An overactive security guard harassing a photographer on a public sidewalk. Cops intimidating people with cameras. Photography bans in subways. In a post 9/11 age of paranoia and suspicion, public photography is increasingly seen as threatening, or mistaken as criminal. And we here at JPG are sick of it."

Too many times I see photographers intimidated by authority figures when it comes to their work. Included in the book is the excellent primer put together by Bert Krages, an attorney, on photographers rights. Typically speaking these days when harrassed by security guards I remind them of my rights to shoot from public spaces and when they threaten to call the police encourage them to do so. I never stop shooting and not once has a police officer ever actually shown up.

Cops are another deal entirely. Although I've only been detained by the cops once and subjected to an unwarranted background check. This does happen and it is important for the cops to know that our hobby is not grounds for illegal search and seizure. As JPG reminds us, "we are not a threat."

The cost of the issue is $19.99. For a sneak peak of what the magazine looks like click here. I will say that the JPG printing quality is high and the magazine is well worth the bucks.

Thanks again to Derek and Heather for putting this publication together.

Catedral de El Burgo de Osma

www.lafronteradelduero.com/Paginas/el_burgo_de_osma.html

Kai Tai Lagoon Nature Park, Port Townsend, WA

www.wnps.org/olympic/projects/kahTaiPrairie/index.html

The Kah Tai Preserve was created in 1987. It was recognized as unique botanical site in 1986. Over 90 different species were identified, 27 represent prairie indicator species.

The Kah Tai Valley, between the Straits of Juan de Fuca and Port Townsend Bay once consisted of open prairies and estuaries. Development quickly transformed this landscape; however, due to benign neglect of a small area within Port Townsend Golf Course, a colorful relic of the last ice age still remains.

From the words of a native son of Port Townsend pioneers, James McCurdy, the valley once was a botanical delight. "Myriads of wild flowers transformed the valley floor into a many-hued carpet." The remnant 1.4 acre prairie has been the focus of preservation and restoration by Olympic Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society.

Regular work parties have focused on stabilizing prairie plant communities and diligently battling the ever-present weeds. Although the native rose and snowberry shrubs are thriving at the prairie the goal is to promote herbaceous prairie species.

HISTORY

When George Vancouver( 1757-1798) arrived in 1792, the area around today's Port Townsend was occupied primarily by members of the Klallam (or S'Klallam) Tribe, who called the spot Kah Tai, meaning “to carry” or “to pass through.” The words were then used to refer to the valley that exists between North Beach and the boat haven. It was through this valley that natives would portage their canoes from the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Port Townsend Bay so they could avoid the currents and rip tides, which exist off Point Wilson.

The lagoon at the end of the portage was a hunting ground as well as the site of an Indian encampment. Kah Tai came to refer not only to the portage, but also to the settlement and bay at the end of the valley.

The tribe wintered in large communal cedar pole-and-plank homes along the shoreline, moving off in smaller family groups during warmer months to fish, hunt, forage, and trade.

When Captain George Vancouver arrived at Kah Tai in 1792, Kah Tai Lagoon was a saltwater marsh that was flushed by the tides. Vancouver and his crew observed four tall poles near the lagoon. The Indians apparently made nets of nettles, which they slung between the poles, and flocks of ducks would become entangled in the nets as they flew low into the marshland. Vancouver named the area Port Townsend in honor of the Marquis of Townshend, a famed English commander. When the first white settlers arrived in 1851, they adopted the name Port Townsend and changed the name Kah Tai Valley to Happy Valley. Only the lagoon at the end of the valley retained the name Kah Tai.

When the boom of 1889 hit the area, the small body of water became an obstacle to development. Two trestle bridges were constructed, one connecting Lawrence Street with the western suburbs and the other an extension of San Juan Avenue. By 1907 the trestle bridges across the “swamp” had deteriorated to the point of being dangerous. The Leader reported that many drivers would go around the lagoon rather than risk their teams across the rickety structure. During this era the City Council had ordained that all rubbish was to be dumped from the midpoint of the Lawrence Street Bridge, which was said to have caused a “pile of rubbish big enough to build a courthouse of.” Councilmembers were warned that herds of rats “as big as good-sized dogs” prospered there, causing a threat to the public safety. A short time later the trestles had to be closed to public traffic due to unsafe conditions.

By 1930 Sims Way was constructed, providing a new access across the lagoon. In 1933 the Chamber of Commerce made a proposal to the Department of Game to declare Kah Tai a Federal Game Reserve. However, the proposal was turned down since 300 acres was the minimum acreage for a reserve and only 160 acres were available around the lagoon.

In 1935 the Chamber of Commerce asked the American Legion and VFW for assistance in cleaning up the lagoon and pulling up the old trestle pilings which marred the view. It was hoped that this volunteer beautification effort would transform the smelly snag-infested area into a place of beauty. Unfortunately the local civic groups did not have the resources to proceed very far toward that goal.

In 1938 the WPA revitalized the beautification plan by providing 15 men and $9,000 in federal money. The project included the removal of hundreds of old snags and pilings, the construction of a water control system, the draining of stagnant saltwater from the swamp and the turning of fresh water into the area by tapping a city reservoir overflow that ran nearby. Check gates were built under Sims Way which prevented backing in of salt water and tended to keep the pond at a constant level.

Wild rice was planted in an effort to make the lagoon more attractive to waterfowl. It worked. By the end of 1938 the bird population had risen from about 350 to 800. The State Department of Game recommended again that a Game Reserve be established at the site to provide sanctuary for the numerous shoveler, pintail, mallard, widgeon, teal, scaup, and bufflehead which were found there.

In 1939, 5,000 Montana black-spot trout were placed in the lagoon for the purpose of catching mosquitoes. In August of that year, only kids were permitted to fish. The kids didn’t have much luck and the reason is a matter of speculation. Perhaps the trout could not survive in the brackish waters of the lagoon or maybe the burgeoning duck population had gobbled up most of the young fish.

Due to the brackish character of the water, plant food species for waterfowl were slow to establish and the birds were getting hungry. Contributions by local citizens provided enough supplementary duck food so that by 1940 the duck population had exploded to an estimated 4,500 birds. The ravenous birds became a nuisance as they began to invade local farms and gardens in search of food. People who grew crops in the area were given permission to shoot the ducks on sight. Despite its sanctuary status, Kah Tai Lagoon once again became a popular hunting ground until the duck population had dwindled and the city firearm ordinances were passed.

WAYNE BORING

Showcase 10

Wayne Boring was born on June 5, 1905, in Minnesota. He studied art at the Chicago Art institute and Minnesota School of Art, becoming a comic artist for National Publications in 1937 where he ghosted "Slam Bradley", "Spy" and "Dr.Occult" for Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel.

After the success of "Superman" in 1938 Joe Shuster opened his own studio and pulled a few artists from DC to help illustrate the Superman stories that the studio supplied to DC under contract alongside other artists including Ed Dobrotka, Stan Kaye and Paul Cassidy & Leo Nowak as well as others.

Over the course of the next 30 years Boring did little else than Superman and became one of the most recognizable artists to draw the character. During the early years at the Shuster Studio, Wayne was emulating the "Shuster Style" as were all the artists there. But by 1942 he had developed a clear style heavily influenced by Flash Gordon artist & creator Alex Raymond.

Wayne's work on Superman stories over the next 30 years was a longer relationship than any other artist would have with any other character in the history of comic books. He also illustrated the sunday and daily comic strips from the middle 1940's to the 1960's - though not continually as the strip was illustrated by numerous artists chosen by DC Comics as opposed to the comic strip syndicate.

Unfortunately, his tenure as the Superman artist that was admired by 2 generations of comic fans would come to an end.

In 1968 with new editorship at DC Comics, several long time artists were dismissed as DC decided it was time to go for a new look at the flagship comic publisher. Wayne was let go along with George Papp (creator of Green Arrow) and Sheldon Moldoff (creator of Green Lantern and long time ghost artist on Batman).

After 1968 he quietly ghosted backgrounds for Hal Foster's epic "Prince Valiant" Sunday page from 1968 until 1972 as well as ghosting Sam Leff's "Davy Jones". He also worked at Marvel for a short period in the 1970's (it was actually something of a coup to have a longtime top DC artist at Marvel, although by now it was a pyric victory)

It was hard to believe that unlike Jack Kirby, Joe Kubert & other longtime artists that Wayne was not working in the comic industry and they weren't calling him.. So he went to work part time as a security guard at a Florida bank near where he lived.

However forgotten he may have been by the comic companies, he was far from forgotten by comic book fans who would write him and call him & seek him out at the few appearances he made at comic book conventions.

He loved talking to the fans and the fans loved talking to him, He would do comissions for fans of Superman & other DC characters and would continue to draw great Superman art until he away in 1987 of a heart attack.

Wayne Boring's Superman is one of the most enduring characters in the comics hobby. Boring's stylized artwork and fine linework along with his ability to handle science fiction subject has made him one of the most popular artists of his time, and among the most remembered in comics history.

About the March of Dimes

This organization strives to help mothers reach full-term in their pregnancies and conducts research about problems that can threaten the health of babies.

The March of Dimes is a charitable organization committed to preventing birth defects and infant death. The organization works toward its mission through education, advocacy and research aimed at prenatal health, genetics and birth defects. The March of Dimes began in 1939 as an organization that focused on polio and operated as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. The name was later changed to the March of Dimes as a play on the term march on time.

Throughout the years, the March of Dimes has launched various campaigns to promote the importance of prenatal care. An example is the organization's folic acid campaign that urged women to take folic acid not only while they are pregnant but before they plan on conceiving. The research behind the campaign proved that folic acid reduces the risk of birth defects and is important for all women of childbearing age to take.

Visitors to the Current show at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, Hyde Park were directed by the Chapman Brothers with this message.

GET RID OF MEANING. YOUR MIND IS A NIGHTMARE.

Easier said than done when it comes to this art by the Chapman Brothers which features the familiar mutilated bodies and scenes of horrific torture and gruesome ritualised decapitations that do not necessarily contrive to horrify, as this sentence would appear to suggest.

The Chapman brothers are inclined to provide enough comforting context. We Monks were after all invited to enter a brand new swanky art gallery and no art lover as far as we are aware has thus far been harmed or traumatised by a Chapman image.

We entered cautiously and discovered the familiar grim images, scary in a "ghost train" kind of way. The Chapman Klansmen are comedy Klansmen with rainbow socks and comedy smiley faces. The Chapman crucified martyrs are nothing more than harmless corporate Ronald MacDonald effigies, and so very many of them as in the real world.

I found myself failing to "get rid of meaning" by comparing the Chapman Brothers to Richard Dadd, whose "Fairy Feller's" is arguably more horrific, given Dadd's state of mind, but far less horrifically explicit than the Chapman Brothers.

As far as we know the Chapman Brothers are not actually psychotic. They are more inclined to toy with the visitors most visitors go along with the toying. I could not fail to notice two American ladies failing to "get rid of the meaning" They provided me with an in-depth commentary on each particular scene of horror and mutilation as if Ronald MacDonald were a real person and these were scenes from a soap opera, a warped Nazi soap opera.

The miniature horror model show might also appeal to the model makers within all of us boys, seeking the same thrill you might get when you view an architect's model of a new airport or a shopping centre complete with little trees to provide context and scale.

For this reason I did wonder why The Chapman Brothers had not provided a model Hornby Nazi train-set to circulate about the corpses. Yes, I do believe that there is a train spotting model maker and dark grim humour within us all.

We Monks saw "Hell", the earlier Chapman Brothers work which featured similar miniature grotesque models in glass cases. These works which took years of endeavour to construct were destroyed in the cataclysmic MOMART fire in the 2004. They have now been recreated and re-imagined somewhat in the same spirit.

I discussed this with a young "curator" in the gallery. I discovered that the new Serpentine Sackler Gallery was in fact an 1805 listed building and formerly a depositary for gunpowder and such. I again found myself failing to "get rid of the meaning", so I changed the subject and I told her that I was a little scared to go into the central section behind the black curtain, from where I could hear the sounds of horror. She said that I should not be scared and that all would be well if I were to enter..

Beyond the black curtain masked members of the KKK were sitting amongst the visitors watching a Chapman movie. There I observed Mrs Monk sitting next to a KKK pointy hat both of them watching the horror movie as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

There was a Chapmanesque resonance in the movie but no fearful reaction from the visitors. Just the occasional knowing laugh.

Since 2001 we have been trying to find Digiscope solutions, from the perfect camera, adapters, lenses, eyepieces, scopes and mounting systems. Now we have great camera, lenses, eyepieces Super Scopes and mounting systems. To my way of thinking Adapters have always been a challenge and the weakest link in Digiscoping. The Manufactures of the adapters have been camera brand specific, over engineered, or have depended on the filter threads of a camera or camera lens to support totally the weight of the camera. No Good, I promise that no lens manufacture would recommend that. Referring to the term “over engineered” I am referring to adapters like the swing models. Personally I believe that they lack support for the camera and seem to be easily damaged while in the field. The new ATX/STX Swarovski seems to have corrected the major concern of camera support, not depending of the filter threads to support the camera system unlike the DCA or the DA-10 from Kowa what I currently use. I have broken in half 4 lenses in the past years using those systems before I tried Support Brackets like the TSN-DA3. Support brackets are great; the scope, eyepiece, adapter and camera are now one secure solid piece if one can remember to lock everything down. I have to confess that due to my negligence of not checking to see if everything was tightened I have send a Scope in for repair and ruined an expensive DSLR when it smashed on the asphalt road. Weight is another issue. The Kowa TSN-DA3 Digiscope Support Bracket weighs 2.58 pounds. The one I own went to a machine shop and all none structural Aluminum was milled away cutting the weight to just over 2 pounds. Some of my days in the field carry me 8 or more miles walking. So like a back packer every pound counts. Up until now the TSN-DA3 was very important to keep my kit functioning and secure. So I carried that 2 + additional pounds.

At the Space Coast Festival two different people showed me a new Adapter. Angie “just a birder” bought one she is excited and bragging about hers. It was of high quality machined Aluminum that will work with 4/3 camera as well as some DSLR and P&S cameras. A minor sleeve change (inner ring) and it will adapt to any spotting scope eyepiece. It is not expensive and best of all the weight of the camera stresses the scope not the filter threads of the lens. There for a support bracket is not necessary, cutting my carry weight 2+ pounds. I ordered one.

Yesterday I received my Digidapter. I watched the video on www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVGfQTd8UPQl for quick assembly instructions. I inspected it for deficits like over engineering or a key feature not considered. I could not any faults. It was designed for quality, for the speed and smoothness in mounting the camera on a scope coming back to same position each time without adjustment or alignment.

•The fasteners are of the highest quality, brass and stainless.

•The screw design for mounting the camera in the tripod mount is superior.

•The brass stop screws on the mounting plate are designed for finger tightening, no fear of stripping the brass parts from over tightening. The camera comes back to the same spot every time.

•The elevation plate has milled slots so only the provided Allen key is necessary to lock the camera in place.

•The camera does not have to be removed from the Digidapter to replace batteries and flash cards. .

• Coupling the camera to the eyepiece is a breeze. Close tolerance machining and the highest quality anodizing is why it is smooth and easy.

•To change from one scope manufacture to another or if the eyepiece is different in size all that is needed is a different inner ring, all of the other parts will remain the same. This means for those scope owners that would like a functional adapter for a Pentax, Celestron, Vortex or Vanguard scope it is now available at a reasonable price.

•Overall, it is solid and functional, easy to use, returns to the same position with each mounting. No binding, pieces glide together, no effort. Precision and effortless in use, protecting the camera and eyepiece from stress damage. No adapter that I have seen mounts the camera and has it ready to shoot faster, safer and with more precision.

•The Digidapter is the best I have seen.

The big question at the Space Coast Festival was would the new 20mm f/1.7 ll ASPH Lumix lens works with this adapter. That lens is short like a Pancake lens but it is about 2 inches in diameter. I phoned my order to Paul Sayegh the owner and designer of the Digidapter. We spent hours on the phone discussing the 4/3s and some of the unique lenses that this system is creating. I had the lens in hand with a pair of dial calipers. I measured and re-measured the key points of the lens and measurement in relation to the camera. I took and then emailed to Paul the photos of the GX 7 and lens and added the measurement to the photos. After receiving the photos we talked again and at Paul’s request I re-measured everything once more. In three days I received my Digidapter and it was perfect.

Paul is an engineer, a designer, a communicator and a great machinist with an advanced knowledge of stress and tolerances. Paul is a big lens photographer that found Digiscoping and knows the importance of Digiscoping as a tool in photography. Digidapter and Paul Sayegh deserve our support.

the Pithora paintings :http://www.indianexpress.com/res/web/pIe/ie/daily/19981124/32851064.html

`Babo Pithoro' is a ritual painting style of the Rathwas that springs from their faith in the village witch doctor's powers to heal all grievances. ``The witch doctor, or lakahara, is held in highest esteem by the Rathwas who seek his consultation for any ill that befalls a family. It is he who visualizes the Babo Pithoro and directs the family to organise the ritual to bade away the evil by invoking the gods,'' said Ghosalkar.

The five-day ceremony is extensive and expensive, sometimes costing the family as much as Rs 30,000. While the preparation starts 15 days in advance with the family going door-to-door with invitations, the first 24 hours are devoted to the painting, inside the host's house followed by the ind, a ceremony invoking the gods by carving sculptures of 11 teak wood pillars. Alongside, is song, dance, food, locally brewed wines, tadi and mahura and merry-making.

A small group of painters chitaras are assigned the job of completing the painting within 24 hours under the supervision of the lakhara who decides on the figures to be painted, their position and the colours to be used. An offering of a slain chicken and wine is first made to the deity (Gamdev) at the makund, the holiest site in the village. The work starts from the wall on the left side of the house with the figure of the evil bhootdev followed by sequential paintings of ancestors, warriors, horses, the sun and moon and traditional Pithora figurines. No shade of black is used in the paintings, as it is considered inauspicious by the tribals.

``The paintings depict the socio-economic conditions of the Rathwa life and emphasise their strong belief in religion. While the styles vary with every Bhil group, they hold a deep social relevance,

While revelry fills the air for the five-day period, Ghosalkar said this was also a time when murders were frequent in the community. ``The Rathwas are hot-headed people, with the Rathwa populated tribal areas recording 800 murders in a year, most following petty quarrels over crops or land,''

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pithora_(painting)

Pithora is a ritualistic painting done on the walls by the Rathwa and Bhilala tribes who live in central Madhya Pradesh. Pithora paintings are executed on three inner walls of their houses. These paintings have significance in their lives and executing the Pithora paintings in their homes brings peace, prosperity and happiness. There is never an attempt to imitate nature: a horse or a bull, which might be a vision of a god, impresses him with only one central quality.

Pithora paintings are more of a ritual than an art form. These rituals are performed either to thank God or for a wish or a boon to be granted. The Bhadwa or the head priest of the tribe is summoned and the problems are narrated. These problems can vary from dying cattle, to unwell children in the family. The concerned person is given a solution and is asked, by the Bhadwa, to perform the ritual and the painting. The presence of Pithora Baba is considered as a solution to all the problems. A Pithora is always located at the threshold, or the Osari, outside the first front wall or inside on the walls of the first room as one enters a house. The painting usually floods the entire wall with figures. Three walls are prepared for the painting, the front wall and the two on either side of it. The front or central wall is very large, twice the size of each of the sidewalls. These walls are treated with two layers of cow dung paste and one layer of white chalk powder. Unmarried girls bring in these materials. This procedure is called Lipna. The main wall of the verandah that divides it from the kitchen is considered sacred to the Pithoro. The wall paintings related to the legends of creation and Pithoro, are done on this wall. The two sidewalls of the veranda are also painted with figures of minor deities, ghosts and ancestors.

The Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis), sometimes referred to as Western Yellow-legged Gull (to distinguish it from eastern populations of yellow-legged large white-headed gulls), is a large gull of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, which has only recently achieved wide recognition as a distinct species. It was formerly treated as a subspecies of either the Caspian Gull L. cachinnans, or more broadly as a subspecies of the Herring Gull L. argentatus. It is named after the German zoologist Karl Michahelles.

It is now generally accepted that the Yellow-legged Gull is a full species, but until recently there was much disagreement. The breeding range is centred around the Mediterranean Sea. In North Africa it is common in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia and increasing in places. Recent breeding has occurred in Libya and Egypt. In the Middle East a few breed in Israel and Syria with larger numbers in Cyprus and Turkey. In Europe there are colonies all along the Mediterranean coast, and also on the Atlantic islands and coasts north to Brittany and west to the Azores. It also breeds on the west side of the Black Sea; here it overlaps with the Caspian Gull but there is a difference in habitat, with the Yellow-legged Gull preferring sea cliffs and Caspian Gull on flatter shores. In recent decades birds have spread north into central and western Europe. One to four pairs have attempted to breed in southern England since 1995 (sometimes hybrid pairs with Lesser Black-backed Gulls), though colonisation has been very slow.

Many birds remain in the same area all year round but others migrate to spend the winter in mild areas of western Europe or head south as far as Senegal, the Gambia and the Red Sea. (wikipedia)

This is an adult Yellow-legged Gull, photographed in Cork Harbour. Ireland is seeing increasing occurrences of this species in late autumn and winter.

Hughes High School is the second oldest high school in the Cincinnati public school system. The school was named after Thomas Hughes, a cobbler who willed his property to the city in order to educate the poor. The original Hughes High School was built in 1853 and located on Fifth and Mound Streets.

In 1910 a new school was built at the current location in University Heights. Designed by J. Walter Stevens, the school is of a Tudor Revival Collegiate with a 425-foot tower. The building exterior is lined with grotesques, which represent various disciplines like chemistry, geography, athletics, and history. The interior features colorful Rookwood drinking fountains.

Over the years, the school has expanded and underwent a complete renovation in 2008. The school also goes by Hughes Center and is a college preparatory school and has programs like STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) and the Zoo Academy – a partnership with the Cincinnati Zoo that teaches students about wildlife.

Hughes High School is the second oldest high school in the Cincinnati public school system. Established with a bequest from cobbler Thomas Hughes whose shop was next door to William Woodward's tanning store on Liberty Street between Main and Sycamore.

The trustees of the Hughes bequest allowed the estate to accumulate for 27 years until 1851 when the Woodward and Hughes funds were combined. Those children who lived east of Race St. attended classes at Woodward. Those who lived west of Race went to Central High until Hughes High School was completed in 1853 at the corner of Fifth and Mound Streets.

This structure was completed in 1910 in Clifton at the northwest corner of Clifton Ave. and West McMillan St.

Hughes High School celebrates 100 years at Clifton Avenue site

OCTOBER 18, 2010

On Oct. 10, the Hughes STEM High School community celebrated the building's 100th birthday. While the school is best known for its current building -- a massive structure replete with exterior gargoyles, Rookwood Pottery and Terrazzo floors – its history goes back 160 years. To Thomas Hughes.

Hughes, an immigrant from England, saw the need to educate all Cincinnati children, regardless of means. So, when he died, he left his property to the city, directing it to use the land for the education of Cincinnati's poorest kids.

That was in 1824 and, initially, income from the property was used to educate indigent children at the private Woodward College. Over the years, the city grew and its educational needs evolved. In 1845, funds from the Hughes estate and those from the Woodward Fund were combined into the city's common school funds. Central School on Longworth Street was renamed Hughes High School, the first actual building with that name.

The Oct. 10 event celebrated the school's 100-year legacy since opening at its current location in 1910, as well as the recent completion of a $40-million renovation to enhance the STEM environment. Upgrades include new plumbing and electrical systems, a new central air-conditioning system and upgrades to technology and science labs.

The Willows at Willow Grove Day Camp is a camp for 3 and 4 year old children. This unique camp experience offers your child an early opportunity to learn and socialize with children their own age.

During the first week of camp, lots of fun was had as the children and counselors got to know each other. “Sun and Surf” was our first week theme. The children really enjoyed decorating their bucket and shovel memo pads during Arts and Crafts. Along with this activity, the Polar Bears and Penguins enthusiastically participated in Nature, Gymnastics, Dance, Tennis and Soccer. We are looking forward to the next seven weeks of fun-filled activities.

Kerala orders probe into religious conversion

By Indo Asian News Service | IANS – Sun 21 Dec, 2014

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 21 (IANS) A report about 35 people getting converted to Hinduism Sunday would be probed by a senior police official, Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said.

The conversion reportedly took place Sunday morning in Alappuzha and Kollam districts.

In Alappuzha, members of eight Christian families - a total of 30 people - reportedly embraced Hinduism at a temple function organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).

In Kollam, there were five people who reportedly became Hindus.

Additional Director General of Police A. Hemachandran has been asked to probe the matter and submit a report, Chennithala told reporters here Sunday.

"He will look into whether any law was violated," he said.

The VHP, meanwhile, said all those who became Hindus Sunday decided to convert on their own, and all the organisation did was to prepare the stage for it.

Reports said another 300 people in Alappuzha have expressed their desire to embrace Hinduism, and the conversion ceremony was likely to take place on Christmas day.

Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah, who was in the state Saturday, said his party was against forced religious conversion.

Communist Party of India-Marxist state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, who is currently in Delhi to take part in the politburo meeting, alleged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was behind Sunday's conversions.

In Kerala, Hindus comprise more than 50 percent of the 32 million population, followed by Muslims with 24 percent while Christians occupy the third place with 22 percent.

Little changed since its construction in 1924, the ropeway is used to bring shale from a quarry on Claughton Moor, approximately a mile and a quarter distant from, and 750 ft above, Hanson Brick Works.

At the quarry, shale is lifted by a front loading shovel and moved up a ramp to be tipped into an initial crusher, and fed into the loading bunker, from which the ropeway buckets are loaded. Having made the journey to the works, the shale is either tipped into dry stock, or loaded into a dump-truck and moved into the stocking area.

The remaining ropeway is one of two, originally constructed to serve the east and west works. That to the west works was taken out of use when that works ceased operation in 1990. The trestles of the former route to the west works remain, although the rope is now gone. Both routes started together at the quarry and radiated out in basically straight lines, to cross the A683 about a quarter of a mile apart. The remaining route has 26 trestles and from the works, initially climbs gently across an open field before climbing more steeply up the wooded valley side. About half way into its journey, the ropeway emerges from the woods to climb more gently across open moorland, before finally following the line of a narrow tributary valley for the last section. A couple of trestles before the top, there is a slight bend to the right to take the route into the top station.

The ropeway is powered by gravity. The extra weight of the loaded buckets pulls the empties back to the loading point. There is a braking system to maintain the correct speed and allow the rope to be brought to a controlled stand when required.

When "on the rope" the buckets are suspended from a hanger, the head of which has two free running wheels, and two clips. The clips sit on top of the rope, to which they are held fast by a combination of gravity and friction between the rope and the clips. As a bucket approaches the top or bottom station, the wheels engage with a rising Bull rail to lift the clips off the rope. The bucket is then free to run along this rail, which allows it to be manually controlled during the loading and unloading processes.

The loading and unloading operations require two men at each end of the ropeway and are achieved in an average time of 20 to 30 seconds.

At the loading point the first operator catches the bucket as it comes off the up rope onto the guide rail and guides it to a stop underneath the loading chute then returns to take the next bucket. The second operator loads the bucket, pushes it around the guide rail then releases it onto the down rope at the correct moment to maintain the desired speed of the moving rope. Typically this is when the previously loaded bucket can be seen to be two trestles into its journey. This maintains the optimum weight distribution between upward moving empty and downward moving filled buckets.

The ropeway generally operates with between 40 and 46 buckets with a round trip for an individual bucket of about 32 minutes. The daily capacity is 250 tonnes.

Why it works.

Steam in the top, compressed air out of the bottom. Dual action piston on top cycles automatically with a "Shortend Stroke" valve (that's the small rod in the center) to drive the main rod that compresses atmospheric air, intake from a filter, to a pressure vessel (tank) to maintain the brake line pressure. If the line is dumped, or slowly released, springs on each car in the train no longer hold the brakes away from the wheels, which apply the brakes until line pressure is restored, releasing the brakes by overcoming the springs. Each brake shoe is balanced in equilibrium with all the others, applying exactly the same dynamic pressure evenly along the entire train. There are many ways to compress air, this is the most common on steam locomotives.

Identical pumps can also be used to compress feed water into the boiler, so often there will be two compressors on the fireman's side of the engine. One to maintain the boiler water level and one to maintain the brake system air pressure.

Why not just use steam pressure? Steam pressure changes depending on the load of the locomotive and this isolates that variability. But more importantly, steam condenses into water when cooled, taking up less volume -decreasing the pressure - applying the brakes, and worse is the maintenance nightmare of water rusting the interior of the brake system parts. The moisture in the air, when compressed, precipitates out and is caught in the first pressure storage tank, which is why one finds a drain valve at the bottom of it.

The transmitter site of "1010 WINS", New York's flagship all-news radio station, shot on approach to Newark on a flight from Nashville. The four towers concentrate the station's 50,000-watt signal over New York City, with a slightly different pattern by day and night. The salt marsh location provides maximum ground conductivity, which is ideal for AM signals. (Nearly all New York's AM transmitters are nearby on similar sites for the same reason.) This rig has been in place since 1995. The concrete stumps of four shorter self-supporting towers can also be seen in these shots. Those went up in the early 40s, when the station moved here, to the town of Lyndhurst.

Lemon Layer Cake

adapted from : smittenkitchen.com/2007/09/layered-lemon-love/

1-2-3-4 Cake

This cake gets its name from its proportion of ingredients: 1 cup butter and milk, 2 cups sugar, 3 cups of flour and 4 eggs, and from cupcakes to layers cakes, as a basic, white cake, it does not fail. Yield: 3 9-inch layers (for the purpose of this cake) or 24 cupcakes (good to know, eh?)

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, at room temperature

2 cups sugar

4 eggs (at room temperature)

3 cups sifted self-rising flour (sift before AND after measuring. Use a spoon to scoop flour into measuring cup)

1 cup milk (at room temperature)

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 325°F (original recipe was 350). Using an electric mixer, cream butter until fluffy. Add sugar and continue to cream well for 6 to 8 minutes. Add eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Add flour and milk alternately to creamed mixture, beginning and ending with flour. Add vanilla and continue to beat until just mixed. Divide batter equally among prepared pans. Level batter in each pan by holding pan 3 or 4-inches above counter, then dropping flat onto counter. Do this several times to release air bubbles and assure you of a more level cake. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a tester or toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean (start checking at 15 minutes if you are making cupcakes).

Lemon Curd

Adapted from The Joy of Cooking

From the Joy of Cooking: This makes a sensation filling for sponge rolls or an Angel Food Cake. You can also marble it into a cheesecake.

8 egg yolks

1 1/2 cups sugar

1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter

3 lemons, zest grated and juiced

Place the ingredients in the double boiler over boiling water. Don’t let top pan touch the water. Cook and stir until mixture begins to gel or thicken ever-so-slightly. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Cover and refrigerate it to thicken. This keeps, refrigerated, for about 1 week.

Cream Cheese Lemon Frosting (from Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook)

6 oz cream cheese (softened)

1 tsp lemon juice

1/2 cup butter softened

4 1/2-3/4 cups sifted powdered sugar

1 tsp lemon zest

Beat cream cheese, lemon juice, and butter until light and fluffy, gradually add 2 cups sifted powdered sugar. Add remaining between 2 1/2 and 2 3/4 cups of powdered sugar and beat until spreading consistency. Add lemon zest and mix.

Lemon Layer Cake Assembly: Add 1 tablespoon of filling to the cake pedestal. Run hands along the side of the cake to remove excess crumbs. Place the cake layers on the pedestal, spreading filling between the layers and on top. Spread the top of the cake with the remaining filling. Frost top and sides of cake with frosting.

Optional, but delicious: press sweetened coconut flakes into the frosting.

CHAPTER 5:

YAFFLES, GABBLE-RATCHETS, WUDU-SNITES AND ASSILAGS

We called it the Baba Yaga’s house, although it was not on stilts of hens’ legs, nor surrounded by human bones. The windows were long boarded up, the dark-stained, deep-carved timber framework spanned by spiders’ webs. An eight-foot fence bounded it on two sides, topped with taut barbed wire. Yellow notices warned of marauding dogs. Beyond it, tangled briars and elders formed an impenetrable screen, and beyond those again, a mile or more of beechwood whispered in the wind. We lived opposite, in a little thatched cottage in the grounds of a school, and watched the blue-tits raising their broods, the dunnocks grubbing amongst the blackberries, and the bullfinches, in the full blaze of their pomposity, perching upon the thorn. At dusk, strange sounds came from the woods: in the deadest cold of winter, foxes coughed their lungs out, and owls held hallowed conversations in the glowing gloom. In summer, other, haunting noises emerged from behind Baba Yaga’s house, an assortment of pics and yaffles, and in the daytime, deep hollow rattles, like the knocking of aged ghosts on locked doors. The authors of these chthonic noises were elusive, but at last they came into the garden, looping between the boughs with a loping flight, landing vertically on the trunk of the old apple tree in the centre of the lawn. They were woodpeckers, pied and red-smocked, with faces painted like skulls. They gathered nuts and faded back into the leaves, while their green and blood-capped cousins plied the lawn for worms, or licked the ants into minor oblivions.

The drumming of a woodpecker is reminiscent of rain and thunder. The sound is achieved by pounding a branch with the bill-tip at a frequency of five to twenty strikes per half-second; the base of a woodpecker’s beak is padded with shock-absorbent tissue to prevent its brain being mashed by the inertia. The great folklorist and ornithologist Edward Armstrong maintained that a woodpecker cult arose in this country and across Europe during Neolithic times, when the earliest attempts at farming increased the rain-dependence of human societies. There is evidence to suggest that there was a woodpecker oracle in the Apennines, who divined the weather. It is easy to see how the earliest agriculturalists could have worshipped these birds, calling upon them to bring the thrumming of the rain, as the oak boles rattled, probed by the tongue of the Woodwale. Into the Bronze Age the Hew Hole held her own, but the oak forests diminished, and Zeus ousted the cult of the Awl Bird. The woodpeckers, vilified by believers in the gods, became mere birds once again. A speech by Euripedes, in Aristophanes’ Birds explains:

Zeus won’t in a hurry the sceptre restore to the woodpecker tapping the oak,

In times prehistoric ‘tis easily proved, by evidence weighty and ample,

That birds and not gods were rulers of men, and the lords of the world.

Other state religions drubbed the woodpecker too for good measure: always, she was disobedient to some male god, refusing to dig holes in the earth for him on the grounds that it would ruin her impeccable plumage. In North Wales, it was said that Christ one day turned an old woman into a woodpecker for refusing him food and water, assuming, of course, that she had any to offer. On those long summer evenings, however, with a full moon rising, and the woodpeckers jostling in the green, it was easy for me to ignore all those pipsqueak interventions of institutionalised gods. The woodpeckers ruled the weather, and the weather ruled the world.

A near relative of these woodpeckers, the bark-coloured wryneck, is a bird of primeval magical power. Ancient Greeks and Romans tied the living bird to a wheel known as an Iynx, its wings outspread, and spun it to aid in the wooing process, or to bring back strays with their tails between their legs. The witch Iyinx herself cast a love-spell on Zeus, leading him into infidelity with Io, and was turned into a wryneck for her pains. The bird’s generic name, Jynx, comes from this, and the name for the malefic use of the wryneck has since come to be applied to any spell designed to hobble or cripple an enemy. As John Clare observed, nest-robbing attempts by unruly schoolboys nearly always failed when the prospective victim was a wryneck, for the bird would cling steadfastly to the nest, writhing and hissing with its neck awry, its crest erect, its eagle-eyes staring. The ability of the bird to twist its neck like a throttled snake has given it the specific name torquilla, or ‘little twister’, and it bears the magical power of all crooked things. It is a boon to the jealous lover who cares not for the consequences, who pronounces the witch-bird’s jinx upon the foe, the rival in love, whose jibe shall choke upon his tongue as the bird’s eye glares upon him.

Earthier still is the lore surrounding nightjars, also known as Fern Owls for their habit of hiding amongst the bracken, as Razor Grinders for their night-time churr which makes them reminiscent of great-eyed crickets, as Dor Hawks for their habit of catching moths on the wing, and more obscurely, as Gabble Ratchets. They share the latter name with the Gabriel Hounds of the Wild Hunt, and their status as faerie birds is guaranteed as much by their secretive habits and cryptic appearance as it is by the folklore which surrounds them. At Nidderdale, it has long been believed that the souls of unbaptised infants go into Nightjars as they go flitting wide-mouthed in the gloom, moth-catching in moonglow. There is also a long-established and highly libellous superstition which maintains that at night-time, the Nightjars go muffle-feathered to the goat-yard, their puckish beaks agape, and drain and poison the udders of she-goats, causing the teats to shrivel, and the goats to dodder and die. It is easy to make an imaginative leap which unites the two traditions in a hideous, vampiric-gothic fantasy, in which the Lich-Fowl (another of their multitudinous names) fly moth-winged to the unhallowed borders of the churchyard, jaws ajar, dripping milk and blood upon their own graves.

Goldcrests and Short-Eared Owls are believed to be the pilots of the Wudu-Coc, Wudu-Snite or Woodcock, because they are migrants who arrive in Britain slightly earlier. Tradition holds that the Woodcock themselves all arrive in Britain overnight, close to Samhain, and it is certainly true that most of them are here by then. Stranger by far is the belief, allied perhaps to the pre-nineteenth century insistence that swallows hibernated under lakes and ponds, that the Woodcocks in their time of absence have migrated to the dark side of the moon. It was Olaus Magnus who first proposed, in the sixteenth century, the more prosaic notion that these species were involved in more-or-less earthbound migratory patterns, but he was not believed, and the mystical flight of the Wudu-Coc to and from the moon was an accepted fact of natural history until well into the eighteenth century. The woodcock has also been used in weather-augury; it is maintained that the early arrival of the woodcock is a good omen for farmers, whereas its late arrival signals disaster, as does a failure to gather the hay before its arrival. Like the Nightjar, the Woodcock seems to conform to the law that the more secretive the bird, the more esoteric its significance.

The mystique of bird lore is just as compelling in the rarefied lives of lighthouse-keepers and fisherfolk. The Assilag, or Storm Petrel, will serve as an example. The very existence of the bird is seemingly miraculous, for it survives the full force of Atlantic gales in a body the size of a sparrow. Its elements may be air and water, but the stuff of life for the petrel is oil; its body oozes with the stuff. Occasionally, they find themselves shipwrecked, whirled inland, and human beings may pick them up alive on the beach. A portion of their bowel contents are reserved just for the occasion, for a rescued petrel will instantly mute black oil on its perceived attacker. For this reason, it has also been called Oily Mootie. In fact, the bird’s body is so heavily bathed in oil that lighthouse keepers have been known to run string through their bodies and use them as candles; an example of a bird prepared in such a way may be seen in the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. Storm Petrels are widely held to embody the damned souls of sailors, especially those of cruel or unjust skippers, which perhaps accounts for the callous detachment with which they are turned into candles. That they are harbingers not only of bad weather, but of evil, was long undisputed. Two further folk names for these birds are suggestive of supernatural associations: Waterwitch, and Mother Carey’s Chicken. The latter is the subject of much dispute amongst folklorists. Was Mother Carey a corruption of Mother Mary, making the name an invocation of a goddess, half-assimilated by Christianity, for the protection of sailors? Or was Mother Carey herself a witch who, like the North Berwick witches who reputedly tried to assassinate King James by magical means, was implicated in the sinking of some ship? Once again, the sources of the names, and the legends that lie behind them, are as elusive as the bird itself.

Other birds have reputations equally charged with lore. The barnacle goose is so-named because Gerald of Wales and the medieval bestiarists claimed that it had a metamorphic life-cycle, spending the first half of its life in the form of goose barnacles. Gerard the herbalist, normally so rational, claimed to have verified this by his own observations. Oystercatchers are traditionally Bride’s birds, which she carries under her crooked arms and releases as she brings the spring to Celtic countries. The body-weight of herons is said to wax and wane with the moon. Ovid believed that kingfishers made nests of fishbone on the sea. The Barn Owl is the descendent of Blodeuwedd, the maiden composed of flowers from the Mabinogion, who was turned into an owl for committing adultery and attempted murder. When curlews fly in flocks of seven, they are to be feared, because they are the incarnation of the Seven Whistlers, and harbingers of doom. Their folk-name Whaup aligns them with a Scottish goblin of the same name, and their bills are suitably downturned for snatching souls. Non-passerine birds in particular are often the focus of our most elemental fears. Their reputations are suffused with some of the most ancient forms of magic: auguries, love-charms and shape-shifting. Whatever twitchers may tell you, it is a crime to be mawkish about birds, and still more so to tick them off on a list. Any fossil of Archaeopteryx will show you why – the scaled legs, the flattened eyes, the additional neck vertebrae all attest to it – birds are dinosaurs writ small, disguised with quills and down.

Wryneck

Writhe, with neck awry,

And hiss. Outdo the cuckoo

With your summer coming.

Turner, twister,

Crested knave,

Return in cold, Torquilla.

Woodpeckerish, rounding

The tree’s rind, beak

Darting, piping out of orchards,

Tonguing for insects,

Clawing the cracks

In tortured trunks.

Twisting witch-bird,

Turn my love toward me.

Her taste be mine.

Turning magic bird,

Alive with throttled throat;

Your jinx be on the foe;

His jibe shall choke

On his tongue; your eye

Shall glare upon him.

Source material: The Wryneck ( Jynx torquilla) is a rare summer visitor to Britain. The bird can swivel its head across its back, and this has given rise to a range of names including Writhe Neck, Twister, and Snake Bird. The Wryneck also hisses like a snake, adding to the mystique, and it arrives in this country at roughly the same time as the Cuckoo. Related to the woodpeckers, it is particularly partial to ants, and possesses the requisite long tongue for acquiring them. A number of other names hint at the bark-coloured plumage of the Wryneck; hence Rind Bird, Rine Bird and Dinnick (a word with the same derivation as Dunnock). The bark of a tree was formerly referred to as the “rind”, although these days this term normally refers to the skins of fruits. The twisting habit of the Wryneck made it a favourite among witches, who would use it in sympathetic magic, for example, when “turning” the desires of a lover. The generic name of the bird points to the darker use referred to in the song – the phrase “to put a jinx on someone” is derived from the malefic use of the Wryneck. Conversely, Robert Graves adds that the Wryneck is “The Goddess’s prime orgiastic bird”, and an “ancient erotic charm”.
