We are two weeks into camp and we must say it has been great! This past week the children have been able to experience all the activities offered at Willow Grove Day Camp including Pony Rides, Tennis and Boating/Fishing. Week 2 of camp's theme was “Celebrate America.” Everyone had fun making Patriotic necklaces which have been sent home. In Ceramics the campers made their hand or foot prints. This week and last, the campers had a special treat at Cooking where they made “dirt” (pudding). Also, each Willows camper continues to master their techniques at swimming and can’t wait to perform their skills on visiting day. Everyone is having a terrific time, and each child has found his/her favorite activities.

Willow Grove Day Camp provides summer fun for kids who live in Willow Grove, Abington, Blue Bell, Hatboro, Horsham, Huntingdon Valley, Lafayette Hill, Philadelphia, Plymouth Meeting, Southampton and the surrounding areas.

Why build an automotive museum? Because one way or another, our lives are touched by the automobile. We remember our parents’ cars, the ones we traveled in with family, the ones we borrowed for our first car date, the first ones we bought. The fast cars, the junkers, the modified ones and the ones we rebuilt—all of them are tied to us in memory. We even dream of cars.

William E. Backer, former owner of Backer Potato Chip Company in Fulton, Missouri, looked back in time and found that a vintage automobile was a thing of fascination. His memories were of old country roads and two lane highways. Bill Backer was an engineer and a builder who loved to tinker. Having built a successful potato chip company, he looked back at the cars that were part of his childhood. Shortly after, he owned a Canadian 1924 Dodge Touring. Dark blue with black fenders and a cloth top. Bill drove his family around the back country roads of Callaway County, Missouri and felt himself touching fading memories.

Not long after he collected the Dodge, Bill had a 1909 Ford Model T. Soon after that, a 1930 Model A. Then a 1929 Cord, a 1931 Rolls Royce Phantom II, a 1957 Chevy Bel Air, and so on. By the mid 1990’s, the number of classic autos in the collection neared 100. Bill found a home for many of his classic cars in an old retail building in Fulton. The Auto World Museum Foundation was formed and a classic car museum was opened to the public. Ten years later, in 2006, the automobile museum was moved to its current home at 200 Peacock Drive in Fulton. It is a building dedicated to the history of vintage and modern automobiles as well as the history of Callaway County and Fulton, Missouri.

After his passing in 2008, his daughter, Vicki McDaniel, assumed leadership of the museum and the collection of cars. Since then, the collection of vintage autos has changed a little. However, her primary passion is for the presentation of antique cars and modern ones in a place that everyone can visit.

The presentation of cars and staging of the museum is the vision of Tom K. Jones, Artistic Director of TKJ Designs in Fulton, Missouri. His concept for the museum was a movement through time and a portrayal of the history of Callaway County, Missouri. Auto World Museum is a stage—a movement through history. Its deep black curtains, scenes from back when, panels of advertising and memorabilia will take you through a history of motion in time. At first, you will visit a period not that long ago, although some say 100 years is a long time. As you move in a clockwise direction through the museum, you will find enticing displays. The simplicity of family drives in the convertible. The decadence of Hollywood and its fancy cars. The sights and sounds of the drive-in as you watched from the comfort of your Studebaker or Corvair. You will ponder when gas prices were really, really low. Finally, you will find yourself nearing the future, with displays of alternative fuel vehicles.

Auto World Museum will spark your curiosity. We hope that you will find that our collection of vintage and modern automobiles fascinates you the way that it did Bill Backer. We hope you will continue the journey with us as we add to the collection over time. We would like to thank William Harrison for his dedication to the research on the autos in the museum.

There is a movement to recall California Assemblyman Anthony Adams.

Along with the Recall Adams campaign there were people gathering signatures on a petition for The Citizen Legislature Act (text), to make California's state legislature a part-time job rather than full-time job with professional politicians as it is now.

UCI WORKSHOP EXPLORES FRIENDLIER TECHNOLOGY

By Ian Hamilton / The Orange County Register (Published: Aug. 22, 2012)

The idea behind Dossier is simple enough – an app to aggregate all the latest information about a person from the Internet, allowing someone to quickly catch up on the recent activities of their friends or contacts before seeing them face to face.

While Dossier is the kind of technology that's rapidly approaching reality, for a group of six doctoral students at UC Irvine it's just an idea they're exploring this week to better understand the values arising out of and being built into technology. Will people be expected to read up on friends before meeting them in person? Will the software use location information to allow users to avoid people?

"We're thinking about how existing technologies taken to their logical extreme might end up meaning you need to produce a computer to be a better friend," said Jed Brubaker, joking, "clearly, the solution when it comes to bad interpersonal relationships is some software."

The Values In Design lab launched earlier this year at UCI brings together researchers from computer science, engineering and the humanities in an effort to devise ways to design technology for the future that is responsible and inclusive, in turn enabling organizations to create better relationships with their users later on. Researchers in the lab focus on building values like privacy, community, trust, dignity, security, respect and freedom from bias into future technological systems and this week 36 doctoral students from North America and Europe are at UCI working with faculty in a weeklong workshop on the subject.

"It's been really fun as we've been brainstorming to pay attention to this tension between the things that are...creepy and the things that sound like they actually can be helpful," said Brubaker. "As a designer, I'm thinking about how these things that maybe feel creepy may become something I might actually want."

Examples of issues the researchers look at include privacy policies and user agreements, lengthy documents that are rarely read and aren't necessarily conceived with the user's interests as a serious consideration. If they were designed with those values in mind, argues professor Cory Knobel, then you wouldn't have outraged users later when the policy changes.

"If you start that process thinking about what users value your policies are more aligned with what people want," said Knobel. "Technology is developed by computer scientists. ... Really rarely are there the discussions about 'What does this technology mean to the people who use it?"

Knobel suggests that if simplicity and transparency are important values then perhaps a privacy policy could be presented as a kind of infographic, letting users see visually "what they're getting themselves into."

Geoff Bowker is one of the researchers who set up the lab earlier this year. He studies search engines and databases, looking at the ways information is skewed or made invisible by these systems. He points out how Google delivers Wikipedia and the United States government as better search results for a country like Cameroon than results from the country itself. Bowker said the solution is to include more voices in the design process.

"How do we get more participation and more breadth of participation in our design work?" asked Bowker. "We all need to become designers."

The workshop concludes Saturday when the students present their projects.

A Native American woman stands in the forest with her friend, a large mountain lion. The woman has a painted face, and wears a deer skin dress and a brown fur shawl. The big cat stands next to her with its head just under her hand. Both the woman and the cougar look at you the viewer as if you have disturbed them in their peaceful woods.

This was based on a story I heard as a kid. I've never been able to find the title or a reference to it though. It goes roughly like this:

___

One winter, a Creek Indian village was having a hard time. The harvest was small and the winter was cold. The people were hungry.

Among them was a man named Panther. Panther went out hunting to help feed his people. Unable to find game in the village's usual hunting ground, he decided to trespass in the forest of a sorceress.

In those woods, he came to a river where the sorceress was bathing. He hid behind some rocks and spied upon her. She was beautiful and Panther was smitten by her.

He stayed too long and she caught him. She was angry, and he was afraid that she would use her magic on him in some bad way. So he pleaded with her and told her that he was hunting to help feed his starving village.

The sorceress took pity on Panther and gave him a magic arrow. Whenever he dropped the arrow on the ground, it would point in the direction to go and find game. However, she told him that he had to return the arrow by the next full moon.

Red Panther used the arrow to find many deer over the next few days which he killed and brought back to his village where he was acclaimed a hero. Soon was the day of the next full moon. Panther new he had to take the arrow back to the sorceress, but he did not want to give up the acclaim he had achieved so he decided to keep the arrow.

The next week, he went out hunting but did not return. Other hunters followed his tracks. They headed towards the sorceress's woods. On the way, they changed from the tracks of a man to those of a cat. When they reached the woods, the hunters saw the sorceress. They dared not approach her though, for now she was guarded by a large panther.

Newsletter: Longest Table - Axis Mundi - Speaking Right Campaign

30 September: The Longest Table ever in Doel

Wednesday 30 September will be the very last day that people who rent a house in Doel are (officially) allowed to stay in the village. After that day, only 13 house owners will be left behind in a village that may fall prey to thiefs, vandals and other crooks.

Doel artist Denise Aerts, however, is not to be discouraged and invites everybody to come to Doel on Wednesday, 30 September to jointly compose the longest table that has ever been in the streets of the village and celebrate a symbolic "Last Supper" in Doel.

One detail: since there are no more facilities in the village, everybody has to bring his or her own (camping) table and a bag with food and beverages.... Denise and her friends will make sure there is music and a nice atmosphere.

The building of the table starts as of 14 hrs and the supper will begin around 18 hrs.

Denise urgently appeals on all sympathizers and people who do not want the village to disappear to join her symbolic Last Supper in Doel

on 30 September

The summit of Crich Hill is reputed to have been the site of a Beacon Fire, which signalled the sighting of the Spanish Armada in the English Channel in 1588. It is believed that after the thrashing the Spanish received from Drake, his ships and the good old English weather, it was again used to celebrate the victory. In 1988 this most famous naval victory was again celebrated on its 400th anniversary with a new Beacon Post and Brazier being built and in 2002 it was again rebuilt as a cairn and brazier to commemorate HM The Queen's Golden Jubilee.

In 1734 there were a number of small lime kilns on the Hill and the public footpath which runs across the Hill to Crich is believed to have been used by Salt Merchants who packed the salt on horses or mules, transporting it southwards from the Cheshire area.

THE TOWER

The first record of any tower type structure is during the reign of King George III (1760) when a wooden tower was erected to provide both a landmark and a place from which to take in some of the best views available. It is thought that this tower was erected to mark his accession to the Throne. Owing to its wooden construction in such an exposed area, it only lasted about 25 years before being demolished. In 1788, Francis Hurt paid the princely sum of 210 to have a conical limestone tower with a wooden top constructed on the site of the old tower. By about 1843 the conical tower was in such a poor state of repair that a decision was taken to rebuild and in 1849 some of the stones of this conical tower were used to build the base of the new circular tower that was built from grit stone.

The circular tower was opened in 1851 (the year of the Great Exhibition) and it had a stone stairway winding up inside. An engraved tablet set in the wall at the top showed that the tower was 955 feet above sea level.

It could be said that this tower was the forerunner of The Sherwood Foresters Memorial. In June 1856 it was the scene of a jubilant crowd celebrating the end of the Crimean War (1854-56) and Sergeant Wetton of the 95th Derbyshire Regiment, a resident of Crich, was carried to the top of the Hill in a specially adapted chair as he had lost a leg at the Battle of the Alma (20th September 1854). There is no doubt that he would have been happy that the war was over, but it is certain that he would have remembered his Regimental Family and the comrades who never came home. In 1881 the 95th Derbyshire Regiment joined the 45th Nottinghamshire Regiment to form The Sherwood Foresters.

In June of 1882 there was a major landslide in the area of the quarry and this had a serious subsidence effect on the tower, lightning strikes and further minor movements of the ground in the immediate area resulted in the closing of the tower to the public for reasons of safety.

Sprengel Museum Hannover

PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING!

09. October 2011 – 15. January 2012

Sprengel Museum HannoverSprengel Museum Hannover

IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE

LOWER SAXONY SAVINGS BANK FOUNDATION

PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING! is an exhibition of the works of 31 photographers on a floor area of over 2,000 square metres. Since HOW YOU LOOK AT IT in 2000, this exhibition is the first and only one to provide an all-embracing overview of artistic photography from the 1960s to the present day. The exhibition has been organized by the Sprengel Museum Hannover in collaboration with the Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation. Starting out from the Foundation’s collection of large groups of works by both American and European photographers, the only collection of its kind in Europe, the exhibition explores the history and perspectives of the ‘documentary style’ of photography.

PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING! constitutes yet a further step towards establishing Hanover as an important centre for artistic photography in the north of Germany.

The starting points of the exhibition are the works of Robert Adams, Diane Arbus, Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, William Eggleston, Lee Friedlander, John Gossage, Nicholas Nixon, Martin Parr and Michael Schmidt. The artist photographers Rineke Dijkstra, Paul Graham, Thomas Struth and the photographers of the generations that followed, such as Jitka Hanzlová, Stephen Gill, Jochen Lempert, Elisabeth Neudörfl, Heidi Specker and Tobias Zielony, visualize the world with a style of photography that adheres strictly to the medium and yet is highly subjective. Max Baumann, Boris Mikhailov, Rita Ostrowskaja and Helga Paris extend the perspective with experiences of their own confrontations with different political systems, while Laura Bielau, Thomas Demand, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Wolfgang Tillmans and Jeff Wall use the documentary style of photography as a means of exemplifying the phenomena of visual perception. Many of the works are being exhibited for the very first time.

Integrated into the exhibition are three successive Project Rooms organized by three guest curators and each taking place for the duration of one month. They thematize three different methods of collecting and three different ways of using photography.

From 9.10. until 30.10.2011 the artist Thierry Geoffroy will investigate the idea behind the title of the exhibition – PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING! – and ask: Who calls whom and what, and for what purpose, and out of what interests? On 1.11.2011 Markus Schaden will be setting up a study room devoted to the photography book as a ‘storage medium’ and collector’s item. From 6.12.2011 until 15.1.2012 Wilhelm Schürmann will be exposing the obsessions that can be the driving force behind a private collection of photographs, graphics, paintings and sculptures.

In the run-up to the exhibition HOW YOU LOOK AT IT at the Sprengel Museum Hannover, which was curated by Thomas Weski and Heinz Liesbrock on the occasion of EXPO 2000, the Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation began to purchase comprehensive groups of works by selected American and European photographers. Since then, the collecting activity of the Foundation has been focused on those works of photography that may be understood to be in the tradition of the ‘documentary style’ (Walker Evans, 1903-1975) and have been exercising a strong influence on photography since the end of the 1960s. Thus it has been possible – thanks not least to the recommendations of a high-calibre advisory board – to build up a photographic collection distinguished by its concentration on groups of works. In this regard the collection is unique in Europe.

The Lower Saxony Savings Bank Foundation’s collection and its perspective are now to be the subject of the present exhibition, which is being mounted jointly with the Sprengel Museum Hannover and also in the context of the Museum’s own well-cultivated photography tradition, which began in 1979 and can boast exhibitions of such great exponents of photography as Karl Blossfeldt, El Lissitzky, Judith Joy Ross and Michael Schmidt, to name only a few of many, or the “SPECTRUM” International Prize for Photography of the Foundation of Lower Saxony. ‘Collecting’ manifests itself here as an open system that operates self-reflexively in the aforementioned Project Rooms and is future-oriented and discussion-friendly in the exhibition’s supplementary events.

PHOTOGRAPHY CALLING! is accompanied by a copious publication (Steidl, Göttingen). Visitors will also be offered a comprehensive information programme.

The exhibition has been curated by Inka Schube, Curator for Photography and Media Art, Sprengel Museum Hannover, and Thomas Weski, Professor of “Curatorial Cultures”, Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig.

www.decorobra.com/cortinas-romanas-un-estilo-unico.html

That is Brighton Pier in the background.

From the hotel's website:

"Originally built in 1771 as houses, the building was converted into a hotel in 1819, and was named Royal York after the Regent's brother, Frederick, Duke of York.

In 1829, the Duke and Duchess of Clarence, later to become King William IV and Queen Adelaide, disembarked from The Admiralty Yacht to stay at the Royal York. The suite of rooms on the first floor overlooking The Steine were given to the Royal couple for their stay and consisted of a bedroom for the Duke (now the William Suite), a bedroom for the Duchess (now the Adelaide suite) and a reception room (now the Clarence Suite).

Fashionable nineteenth century Brighton hotels such as the Royal York were designed for guests who rented a suite of rooms. The idea of communal dining rooms and sitting areas did not evolve until the end of the century. The apartments in the Royal York were elegantly furnished and were very popular with the aristocratic set who came to Brighton and to the Court at The Pavilion.

Amongst the famous people of the time who frequented the Royal York were the Duke and Duchess of Richmond and the Duke and Duchess of Argyll who stayed at the hotel after attending the Brighton races in 1822. Later in the same year, the Marquess of Salisbury dined there, as did the speaker of the House of Commons, Henry Manners-Sutton. On one occasion The Duke of York sent a piece of a large sturgeon fish from The Pavilion over to the Royal York Hotel for the Russian Ambassador to enjoy.

Charles Dickens, William Thackeray and William Harrison Ainsworth were also all visitors. There is a reference to the hotel in Thackeray's Vanity Fair. Benjamin Disraeli was a guest at the Royal York, as was his great adversary William Gladstone,

In 1901 the hotel was bought by the charismatic Harry Preston, who extended the building and modernised the hotel dramatically. He was a famous bantam-weight amateur boxer and was friends with many of the great sportsmen of his day, such as W. G. Grace. As a result, many of these famous friends became regular guests at The Royal York. Other celebrities of the time also stayed at the hotel, including Wilbur Wright soon after his first flight as did many of the biggest names in theatre and entertainment such as Sir Henry Wood. In 1910, Mr Lloyd George entertained friends at the Royal York, as it was renowned for its excellent food and wine.

In 1929 the hotel was sold to the forerunner of Brighton and Hove City Council, and was used as offices until the council vacated the building in 2003. It was bought by Imperial Property Company in 2006.

The current owners have undertaken an extensive refurbishment of the building, and are proud to have restored this historic and beautiful hotel. Their aim has been to bring back the fun, colour and vibrancy of the Regency period when the hotel first opened...."

The Bundesschule of the ADGB in Bernau next to Berlin designed by Hannes Meyer und Hans Wittwer and finished in Mai 1930 is a creation by the famous Bauhaus in Dresden. The Bauhaus is worldwide appreciated as the most important shool of arts in the 20-th century. Its initial impact for a new view of artistic and educational processes in art, architecture and design last till today.

The building of the Bundesschule in Bernau was erected under Meyer beeing in position of director of the Bauhaus in Dresden during the conceptional phase. Hans Witwer, foreman of the construction department since march 1928 and head of the site office at the Bauhaus, was significantly involved in the erection. The collaboration of students of architecture and involving quite a few work shops in the construction process prove the close relationship to the work of the Bauhaus. The Bundesschule is the second school, after the Bauhaus building in Dessau from 1925/26 (architect Walter Gropius), from the fields of activities of the Bauhaus. Until now, it has an effect as example of an organized physical structure, which is freely and sensetively composed in a natural landscape zone.

The architectural complex, the auxilary facilities of the fifties in the 20-th century included, has been listed in the monument register since since 1977 is regarded special national protection of historical monumnents. His appeciation is increased nationaly and internationaly. The federal provinces Brandenburg, Sachsen-Anhalt und Thüringen applied the proposal of the inclusion in the list of World Heritage by UNESCO of the ADGB-Bundesschule Bernau and the gallery blocks in Dessau-Törten. The listed Bauhaus sites Dessau und Weimar should be complemented by this act.

Source: www.autoworldmuseum.com/about.html

Our Lady & The English Martyrs, Cambridge

stepneyrobarts.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/our-lady-english-ma...

Yesterday I revisited St Peter for internals and finished of Cambridge, visiting seven Victorian built churches only one of which, Our Lady & The English Martyrs, is worth writing up.

At first sight I wrote OLEM off as a Victorian Gothic monstrosity but as I wandered around the exterior I was struck by the quality of the building and the interior stunned me with lots of rather good glass and impressive architecture (oh and apart from three revisits, Babraham, Guilden Morden and Stow cum Quy, that finished the north west quadrant).

The Church of Our Lady and the English Martyrs, or OLEM, is situated in the heart of the city of Cambridge. An imposing example of the 19th Century Gothic Revival, it was built to the designs of Dunn & Hansom of Newcastle between 1885 and 1890, and founded solely by Mrs Yolande Marie Louise Lyne-Stephens, a former ballet dancer at the Paris Opera and Drury Lane, London, and widow of a wealthy banker. She promised to build the church on the feast of Our Lady of the Assumption, and Monsignor Christopher Scott - the first Rector - also wished to commemorate the Catholic Martyrs who died between 1535 and 1681, over thirty of whom had been in residence at the University.

Designed by architects Dunn and Hansom of Newcastle and built by the Cambridge firm of Rattee and Kett, OLEM is constructed in Casterton, Ancaster and Combe Down Stone. The church is a traditional cruciform structure in the early-decorated style with a large tower at the crossing, a polygonal apse and a west bell tower with a 65-metre spire, visible for miles around Cambridge. Quite often, it is quoted by visitors and local residents as a location point. The approximate internal dimensions of the church are: length 48 meters [156 ft] width across the aisles 16 meters [51 ft] width at the transepts 22 meters [71 ft], the height of the nave 15 meters [71ft].

Inside and over the west door stands the figure of Our Lady of the Assumption crowned with lilies and standing on the crescent moon with the vanquished serpent beneath. The west window shows the English Martyrs arranged in two principal groups, the clergy on the south side with St John Fisher in their midst and the laity on the north grouped round St Thomas More.

Beside the South aisle is an ancient statue of Our Lady with the Child Jesus. This statue is understood to be a gift in 1850 from Emmanuel College, which was built on the site of a Dominican Priory dating back to 1274. The Church of the Black Friars of Cambridge contained a statue of Our Blessed Lady to which much pilgrimage was had. Although unconfirmed this could be that statue.

The Chapel of the Holy Souls with the book of Remembrance is located at the west end of the south aisle. The sculpture above the altar depicts the solace and relief of the Holy Souls in Purgatory through the intercession of Our Lady and the angel who comforted Our Lord in Gethsemane. The Chapel is now appropriately used at the two great Christian celebrations: at Easter for the Empty Tomb indicating the Risen Lord, and at Christmas for the Crib.

The aisle windows were almost completely destroyed when the church was struck by a bomb on 1941, but were subsequently replaced in their original form. They epitomise the various sufferings of the English Martyrs, their being brought before the Council, racked, hung, drawn and quartered in the sight and sympathy of the faithful. The windows of the north aisle portray Carthusians, St Thomas Moore, B. Margaret Pole and others, while the south aisle is made a “Fisher Aisle”, devoted to scenes from the life of St John, Cardinal Bishop of Rochester, who in so many important ways is identified with Cambridge.

The best general impression of the interior is obtained from the gateway in the iron screen dividing the nave from the ante-chapel. The heads of the four great preachers of Our Lady’s Graces are carved in the four corners of the nave. The windows along the nave represent saints connected with the Church in Britain, arranged approximately in chronological order from east to west with a few additional figures in the eastern windows.

The Rood which is between the nave and the sanctuary is of the type known as “Majestas”; the figure of Our Lord, with glorified wounds, robed in alb, stole and pallium [as High Priest] and crowned [as King “reigning from the Tree”]. This was the earliest type of crucifix; the realistic figure, now almost universal, did not come into general use until the beginning of the thirteenth century. The cross, inspired by that at Nuremberg, is about 6 metres high, carved in oak; the figures of Christ and of Our Lady and of Saint John are of Kauri pine. They were carved locally by Mr. B. Maclean Leach and completed and blessed in 1914.

Beyond the present, modern altar is the High Altar with the relics of Saints Felix and Constantia, martyrs of the early Church. The tabernacle and ornaments of the altar are of exquisite French workmanship from Lyons. The baldacchino which covers the High Altar is similar to that over the tomb of Robert the Wise (1275-1343) at Santa Chiara, Naples. It is one of the earliest forms of adornment of a Christian altar. At the top is the figure of Our Lord in glory supported on each side by angels in act of adoration.

The design and the re-ordering of the sanctuary was done by Mr. Gerard Goalen of Harlow after the Second Vatican Council. On 7th April, 1973, Bishop Charles Grant consecrated the present central. The original High Altar has subsequently been used mainly for reservation of the Blessed Sacrament.

Wednesday 25 July 2012: Les Contamines-Montjoie - Auberge Le Truc (1,720 m) - Refuge de Miage (1,560 m) - Col de Tricot (2,120 m) - Bellevue (1,800 m) - Col de Voza (1,653 m) - Les Houches - Les Bossons

Day 12 of our Tour du Mont Blanc, on Exodus' Mont Blanc Circuit trip - a clockwise circumambulation of the Mont Blanc massif

Today would bring us back into the valley of Chamonix-Mont Blanc, and it felt far too soon to be returning to Les Bossons. Suddenly the end was nigh....

After our final tent wrangling, and Stephen and Ian demonstrating their double act tent-taking-down skills for the rest of us, we said au revoir lovely Camping Le Pontet and walked down to Les Contamines, turning off at the signpost for Le Truc. A steep climb up through pine trees eventually brought us out above the tree line at Auberge Le Truc (1,720 m). The morning's blue skies and bright sun made for poor photos of the Glacier du Miage and the peaks above, including the elusive Mont Blanc and the Aiguille de Bionnassay.

A descent into the next valley brought us to the Refuge de Miage (1,560 m) in its stunning location below the glacier and the Dômes de Miage (but the sun was still working against my photos!). Refreshed by coffee and cake (I declined the blueberry tarte at 7€ a slice...), we commenced the long haul and many zigs and zags up to the Col de Tricot (2,120 m). En route, it did indeed feel frustrating to have lost the 200m between Auberge Le Truc and Refuge de Miage! Still, the views from the col were smashing - north into the Bionnassay valley with the line of the Mont Blanc Tramway just discernable, and south back over the Miage valley and to the ridges beyond. A great spot to rest for a while.

The next stretch took us down into the Bionnassay valley and more great views of the peaks and glaciers of the Mont Blanc Massif up to our right, and we lunched with a stupendous view looking up the Glaicer de Bionnassay at the Aiguille de Bionnassay and Dôme du Goûter.

Accompanied by Alpine Roses, flowers and woodland we descended towards the Torrent de Bionnassay, and crossed, carefully, over the cable suspension bridge. A very busy section followed, up to Bellevue where the tramway and the cable car from Les Houches deposit strollers, hikers and mountaineers alike. Those with tired legs opted for the cable car down, the rest of us continued to the Col de Voza (1,653 m) and then took the black run down to Les Houches - the sandy/scree track made for tough going on the knees.

Having made a rainy rendezvous at a bar in Les Houches, we squeezed onto the bus back to Les Bossons - hello again Camping Les Marmottes .... and BONJOUR MONT BLANC!

From Edmunds (http://www.edmunds.com/ford/taurus/2008/review.html) -

What Edmunds.com says

The reborn 2008 Ford Taurus hits the dance floor with some fresh moves courtesy of a 263-horsepower V6. The engine upgrade, along with the Five Hundred's pre-existing comfortable cabin, cavernous trunk and top-notch safety scores, make the new Taurus a worthy candidate for a full-size sedan.

Pros

Extra-large backseat and trunk, outstanding crash test scores, comfortable ride, good visibility, available all-wheel drive.

Cons

High front seats create an odd driving position that might be uncomfortable for taller drivers, transmission occasionally slow to downshift.

What's New for 2008

Ford resurrects the Taurus nameplate for 2008 by affixing it to a much-improved Five Hundred. A more powerful engine, a nicer and quieter cabin, a retuned suspension and a corporate three-bar grille are the major highlights.

Introduction

Name recognition and awareness are no doubt important for automotive manufacturers. For example, look no further than the 2008 Ford Taurus. Ford has pulled the Taurus nameplate out of its one-year dirt nap in hopes of getting back into the thick of the large family sedan game. But is the public's awareness of the Taurus name a good thing or bad? Though a hero car back in the 1980s and early '90s, more recent iterations of the Taurus were dated and anonymous, a favorite of image-dulling rental car agencies and a not-so-favorite of middle management types who received them as company cars.

The Taurus revival is combined with the death of the Ford Five Hundred, a large sedan introduced a few years ago that never sold like the company had hoped. Although it offered a large cabin and an impressive ride and handling balance, the Five Hundred was let down by weak engine performance and a lack of refinement.

Thankfully, the 2008 Ford Taurus gains a number of improvements as part of its return. Under that familiar Five Hundred sheet metal are much improved running gear and additional features. In fact, Ford says there are more than 500 changes. A 263-hp V6 replaces the lame 203-hp V6, and a more responsive six-speed automatic replaces the sluggish continuously variable transmission (CVT) across all trim levels.

Other improvements for this large family sedan include the adoption of stability control, a "Ford Sync" system (that allows hands-free use of mobile phones and digital music players), improved cabin materials and more sound insulation for a quieter ride.

With its major performance infusion, addition of key safety and luxury features, and available all-wheel drive, the Ford Taurus is the best it's been in a long time. Given the Taurus' size (along with the fact that the Ford Fusion now battles stalwarts like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry), you'll probably want to cross-shop it against full-size sedans like the Chrysler 300, Hyundai Azera or Toyota Avalon. Though still slightly deficient in terms of style (compared to the 300) or all-around polish, the Taurus is certainly worth consideration.

- RIO SEM HOMOFOBIA from Ruim no Psicológico .por PRECONCEITO, BULLYING, INJUSTIÇA

(2005 DEFENSORIA PÚBLICA Faiza Khalida) from Ruim no Psicológico .por PRECONCEITO, BULLYING, INJUSTIÇA

Vivenciava o isolamento.

24- Procuradora Municipal Débora Fernandes C. Pinto (mat.

In 2014 I started working on a design for our #BritArmyAndFriends reunion at #SpaceFestVI

www.spacefest.info/VI/Over.html

Here is the collection of my brainstorming and the design process:

www.flickr.com/photos/spaceholix/sets/72157643534421185/

And additionally some background information:

My latest design features the #NebraSkydisk - one of the most beautiful, astronomical artefacts ever found - until today.

This is the oldest-known image of our cosmos so far, with an estimated age of 3600 years (!!!), the earliest known diagram of the heavens, which makes it one or may be THE most important archaeological discovery of the twenty-first century.

It was discovered on July 4th 1999 near the city of Nebra in Germany and since then fascinates not only the experts.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nebra_sky_disk

www.bibliotecapleyades.net/arqueologia/nebra_disk.htm

I have to admit that I fell in love with this beauty as soon as I heard about it several years ago.

And I always wanted to paint it one day.

So what better match could there be than combining this masterpiece, created by stargazers several thousand years ago, who loved observing (and already started understanding) our night sky,

with #SpaceFestVI, which will bring people together again, who come from all around the world to share their love of space and our beautiful blue marble … ?!

NOTE:

This artefact is under the copyright of the

As my design project is an artistic realization for a private travel group, I was kindly given permission to integrate the #NebraSkydisk in my artwork.

Hence I have to emphasize that my artwork may ONLY be shared as per following license:

I herewith explicitly send my thanks to the

STATE OFFICE FOR HERITAGE MANAGEMENT AND ARCHAEOLOGY

- THE STATE MUSEUM OF PREHISTORY IN HALLE / GERMANY -

and I will - as requested - gladly send pictures of my design as well as photos of #SpaceFestVI to the Museum for its collection/exhibition.

It is my pleasure to share the #NebraSkydisk far beyond the borders of Germany - especially during an event which only can take place, because some people started documenting their night-sky-observations thousands of years ago.

#OnceUponATime

One year ago, in April 2013 I was looking forward to an amazing event.

A group of #SpaceTweeps was planning to meet in Tucson / Arizona for #SpaceFestV ( www.spacefest.info/V/Astro.html )

Some of us had met each other in person earlier, some on Facebook several months in advance in a group called the #BritArmyAtSpacefest and some #HonoraryMembers joined our group at #SpaceFest itself.

This event turned out even better than I (and I guess many of us) ever could have imagined!

Meeting like-minded people with a great diversity of backgrounds and professions from literally all over the world in the middle of Arizona and sharing with them at least 4 days, while being amongst some of the most remarkable #SpaceLegends #MoonWalkers #MeteoriteMen #AsteroidHunters #Scientists and other #SPACEHOLIX was unforgettable.

www.flickr.com/photos/spaceholix/sets/72157635181483681/

Since that time our group is in regular contact (mostly via social media) and as we didn't want to wait a whole year for #SpaceFestVI , we got together again in November 2013 to share another great event:

We enjoyed our #ItIsStonegengeReunionOClock where our group of about 20 people had the pleasure to getting exclusive access in a private tour to the inner circle of the stones during sunset.

Surrounded by many other highlights and #MiniTweetups in UK this was a brilliant weekend.

www.flickr.com/photos/spaceholix/sets/72157636773194195/

Since then we are looking forward to our next reunion at #SpaceFestVI which will take place in Pasadena / California in May 2014 ( www.spacefest.info/VI/Astros.html )

What I had started in 2013 after getting back to painting after a very long time,

became kind of a tradition in the meantime:

Inspired by several #Space- and #ScienceTweetups I painted logos for every event I attended

and got them printed on badges for all participants and also some on t-shirts etc.

And 2013 has been quite a ride :-)

JPG Magazine - Issue 5: Photography is Not a Crime JPG Magazine is out with issue number 5 entitled, "Photography is Not a Crime."

This is a subject near and dear to my heart having had more than my fair share of run ins over the years with cops, security guards, and many other authority figures out there while documenting the world.

One of my photos appears in the magazine and I wrote up a brief essay on my experience when harrased for trying to shoot One Bush St. in San Francisco.

From JPGs website: "There's another example every day. An overactive security guard harassing a photographer on a public sidewalk. Cops intimidating people with cameras. Photography bans in subways. In a post 9/11 age of paranoia and suspicion, public photography is increasingly seen as threatening, or mistaken as criminal. And we here at JPG are sick of it."

Too many times I see photographers intimidated by authority figures when it comes to their work. Included in the book is the excellent primer put together by Bert Krages, an attorney, on photographers rights. Typically speaking these days when harrassed by security guards I remind them of my rights to shoot from public spaces and when they threaten to call the police encourage them to do so. I never stop shooting and not once has a police officer ever actually shown up.

Cops are another deal entirely. Although I've only been detained by the cops once and subjected to an unwarranted background check. This does happen and it is important for the cops to know that our hobby is not grounds for illegal search and seizure. As JPG reminds us, "we are not a threat."

The cost of the issue is $19.99. For a sneak peak of what the magazine looks like click here. I will say that the JPG printing quality is high and the magazine is well worth the bucks.

Thanks again to Derek and Heather for putting this publication together.

WAYNE BORING

Showcase 10

Wayne Boring was born on June 5, 1905, in Minnesota. He studied art at the Chicago Art institute and Minnesota School of Art, becoming a comic artist for National Publications in 1937 where he ghosted "Slam Bradley", "Spy" and "Dr.Occult" for Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel.

After the success of "Superman" in 1938 Joe Shuster opened his own studio and pulled a few artists from DC to help illustrate the Superman stories that the studio supplied to DC under contract alongside other artists including Ed Dobrotka, Stan Kaye and Paul Cassidy & Leo Nowak as well as others.

Over the course of the next 30 years Boring did little else than Superman and became one of the most recognizable artists to draw the character. During the early years at the Shuster Studio, Wayne was emulating the "Shuster Style" as were all the artists there. But by 1942 he had developed a clear style heavily influenced by Flash Gordon artist & creator Alex Raymond.

Wayne's work on Superman stories over the next 30 years was a longer relationship than any other artist would have with any other character in the history of comic books. He also illustrated the sunday and daily comic strips from the middle 1940's to the 1960's - though not continually as the strip was illustrated by numerous artists chosen by DC Comics as opposed to the comic strip syndicate.

Unfortunately, his tenure as the Superman artist that was admired by 2 generations of comic fans would come to an end.

In 1968 with new editorship at DC Comics, several long time artists were dismissed as DC decided it was time to go for a new look at the flagship comic publisher. Wayne was let go along with George Papp (creator of Green Arrow) and Sheldon Moldoff (creator of Green Lantern and long time ghost artist on Batman).

After 1968 he quietly ghosted backgrounds for Hal Foster's epic "Prince Valiant" Sunday page from 1968 until 1972 as well as ghosting Sam Leff's "Davy Jones". He also worked at Marvel for a short period in the 1970's (it was actually something of a coup to have a longtime top DC artist at Marvel, although by now it was a pyric victory)

It was hard to believe that unlike Jack Kirby, Joe Kubert & other longtime artists that Wayne was not working in the comic industry and they weren't calling him.. So he went to work part time as a security guard at a Florida bank near where he lived.

However forgotten he may have been by the comic companies, he was far from forgotten by comic book fans who would write him and call him & seek him out at the few appearances he made at comic book conventions.

He loved talking to the fans and the fans loved talking to him, He would do comissions for fans of Superman & other DC characters and would continue to draw great Superman art until he away in 1987 of a heart attack.

Wayne Boring's Superman is one of the most enduring characters in the comics hobby. Boring's stylized artwork and fine linework along with his ability to handle science fiction subject has made him one of the most popular artists of his time, and among the most remembered in comics history.

About the March of Dimes

This organization strives to help mothers reach full-term in their pregnancies and conducts research about problems that can threaten the health of babies.

The March of Dimes is a charitable organization committed to preventing birth defects and infant death. The organization works toward its mission through education, advocacy and research aimed at prenatal health, genetics and birth defects. The March of Dimes began in 1939 as an organization that focused on polio and operated as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. The name was later changed to the March of Dimes as a play on the term march on time.

Throughout the years, the March of Dimes has launched various campaigns to promote the importance of prenatal care. An example is the organization's folic acid campaign that urged women to take folic acid not only while they are pregnant but before they plan on conceiving. The research behind the campaign proved that folic acid reduces the risk of birth defects and is important for all women of childbearing age to take.

Visitors to the Current show at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, Hyde Park were directed by the Chapman Brothers with this message.

GET RID OF MEANING. YOUR MIND IS A NIGHTMARE.

Easier said than done when it comes to this art by the Chapman Brothers which features the familiar mutilated bodies and scenes of horrific torture and gruesome ritualised decapitations that do not necessarily contrive to horrify, as this sentence would appear to suggest.

The Chapman brothers are inclined to provide enough comforting context. We Monks were after all invited to enter a brand new swanky art gallery and no art lover as far as we are aware has thus far been harmed or traumatised by a Chapman image.

We entered cautiously and discovered the familiar grim images, scary in a "ghost train" kind of way. The Chapman Klansmen are comedy Klansmen with rainbow socks and comedy smiley faces. The Chapman crucified martyrs are nothing more than harmless corporate Ronald MacDonald effigies, and so very many of them as in the real world.

I found myself failing to "get rid of meaning" by comparing the Chapman Brothers to Richard Dadd, whose "Fairy Feller's" is arguably more horrific, given Dadd's state of mind, but far less horrifically explicit than the Chapman Brothers.

As far as we know the Chapman Brothers are not actually psychotic. They are more inclined to toy with the visitors most visitors go along with the toying. I could not fail to notice two American ladies failing to "get rid of the meaning" They provided me with an in-depth commentary on each particular scene of horror and mutilation as if Ronald MacDonald were a real person and these were scenes from a soap opera, a warped Nazi soap opera.

The miniature horror model show might also appeal to the model makers within all of us boys, seeking the same thrill you might get when you view an architect's model of a new airport or a shopping centre complete with little trees to provide context and scale.

For this reason I did wonder why The Chapman Brothers had not provided a model Hornby Nazi train-set to circulate about the corpses. Yes, I do believe that there is a train spotting model maker and dark grim humour within us all.

We Monks saw "Hell", the earlier Chapman Brothers work which featured similar miniature grotesque models in glass cases. These works which took years of endeavour to construct were destroyed in the cataclysmic MOMART fire in the 2004. They have now been recreated and re-imagined somewhat in the same spirit.

I discussed this with a young "curator" in the gallery. I discovered that the new Serpentine Sackler Gallery was in fact an 1805 listed building and formerly a depositary for gunpowder and such. I again found myself failing to "get rid of the meaning", so I changed the subject and I told her that I was a little scared to go into the central section behind the black curtain, from where I could hear the sounds of horror. She said that I should not be scared and that all would be well if I were to enter..

Beyond the black curtain masked members of the KKK were sitting amongst the visitors watching a Chapman movie. There I observed Mrs Monk sitting next to a KKK pointy hat both of them watching the horror movie as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

There was a Chapmanesque resonance in the movie but no fearful reaction from the visitors. Just the occasional knowing laugh.

Since 2001 we have been trying to find Digiscope solutions, from the perfect camera, adapters, lenses, eyepieces, scopes and mounting systems. Now we have great camera, lenses, eyepieces Super Scopes and mounting systems. To my way of thinking Adapters have always been a challenge and the weakest link in Digiscoping. The Manufactures of the adapters have been camera brand specific, over engineered, or have depended on the filter threads of a camera or camera lens to support totally the weight of the camera. No Good, I promise that no lens manufacture would recommend that. Referring to the term “over engineered” I am referring to adapters like the swing models. Personally I believe that they lack support for the camera and seem to be easily damaged while in the field. The new ATX/STX Swarovski seems to have corrected the major concern of camera support, not depending of the filter threads to support the camera system unlike the DCA or the DA-10 from Kowa what I currently use. I have broken in half 4 lenses in the past years using those systems before I tried Support Brackets like the TSN-DA3. Support brackets are great; the scope, eyepiece, adapter and camera are now one secure solid piece if one can remember to lock everything down. I have to confess that due to my negligence of not checking to see if everything was tightened I have send a Scope in for repair and ruined an expensive DSLR when it smashed on the asphalt road. Weight is another issue. The Kowa TSN-DA3 Digiscope Support Bracket weighs 2.58 pounds. The one I own went to a machine shop and all none structural Aluminum was milled away cutting the weight to just over 2 pounds. Some of my days in the field carry me 8 or more miles walking. So like a back packer every pound counts. Up until now the TSN-DA3 was very important to keep my kit functioning and secure. So I carried that 2 + additional pounds.

At the Space Coast Festival two different people showed me a new Adapter. Angie “just a birder” bought one she is excited and bragging about hers. It was of high quality machined Aluminum that will work with 4/3 camera as well as some DSLR and P&S cameras. A minor sleeve change (inner ring) and it will adapt to any spotting scope eyepiece. It is not expensive and best of all the weight of the camera stresses the scope not the filter threads of the lens. There for a support bracket is not necessary, cutting my carry weight 2+ pounds. I ordered one.

Yesterday I received my Digidapter. I watched the video on www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVGfQTd8UPQl for quick assembly instructions. I inspected it for deficits like over engineering or a key feature not considered. I could not any faults. It was designed for quality, for the speed and smoothness in mounting the camera on a scope coming back to same position each time without adjustment or alignment.

•The fasteners are of the highest quality, brass and stainless.

•The screw design for mounting the camera in the tripod mount is superior.

•The brass stop screws on the mounting plate are designed for finger tightening, no fear of stripping the brass parts from over tightening. The camera comes back to the same spot every time.

•The elevation plate has milled slots so only the provided Allen key is necessary to lock the camera in place.

•The camera does not have to be removed from the Digidapter to replace batteries and flash cards. .

• Coupling the camera to the eyepiece is a breeze. Close tolerance machining and the highest quality anodizing is why it is smooth and easy.

•To change from one scope manufacture to another or if the eyepiece is different in size all that is needed is a different inner ring, all of the other parts will remain the same. This means for those scope owners that would like a functional adapter for a Pentax, Celestron, Vortex or Vanguard scope it is now available at a reasonable price.

•Overall, it is solid and functional, easy to use, returns to the same position with each mounting. No binding, pieces glide together, no effort. Precision and effortless in use, protecting the camera and eyepiece from stress damage. No adapter that I have seen mounts the camera and has it ready to shoot faster, safer and with more precision.

•The Digidapter is the best I have seen.

The big question at the Space Coast Festival was would the new 20mm f/1.7 ll ASPH Lumix lens works with this adapter. That lens is short like a Pancake lens but it is about 2 inches in diameter. I phoned my order to Paul Sayegh the owner and designer of the Digidapter. We spent hours on the phone discussing the 4/3s and some of the unique lenses that this system is creating. I had the lens in hand with a pair of dial calipers. I measured and re-measured the key points of the lens and measurement in relation to the camera. I took and then emailed to Paul the photos of the GX 7 and lens and added the measurement to the photos. After receiving the photos we talked again and at Paul’s request I re-measured everything once more. In three days I received my Digidapter and it was perfect.

Paul is an engineer, a designer, a communicator and a great machinist with an advanced knowledge of stress and tolerances. Paul is a big lens photographer that found Digiscoping and knows the importance of Digiscoping as a tool in photography. Digidapter and Paul Sayegh deserve our support.
