Since 2001 we have been trying to find Digiscope solutions, from the perfect camera, adapters, lenses, eyepieces, scopes and mounting systems. Now we have great camera, lenses, eyepieces Super Scopes and mounting systems. To my way of thinking Adapters have always been a challenge and the weakest link in Digiscoping. The Manufactures of the adapters have been camera brand specific, over engineered, or have depended on the filter threads of a camera or camera lens to support totally the weight of the camera. No Good, I promise that no lens manufacture would recommend that. Referring to the term “over engineered” I am referring to adapters like the swing models. Personally I believe that they lack support for the camera and seem to be easily damaged while in the field. The new ATX/STX Swarovski seems to have corrected the major concern of camera support, not depending of the filter threads to support the camera system unlike the DCA or the DA-10 from Kowa what I currently use. I have broken in half 4 lenses in the past years using those systems before I tried Support Brackets like the TSN-DA3. Support brackets are great; the scope, eyepiece, adapter and camera are now one secure solid piece if one can remember to lock everything down. I have to confess that due to my negligence of not checking to see if everything was tightened I have send a Scope in for repair and ruined an expensive DSLR when it smashed on the asphalt road. Weight is another issue. The Kowa TSN-DA3 Digiscope Support Bracket weighs 2.58 pounds. The one I own went to a machine shop and all none structural Aluminum was milled away cutting the weight to just over 2 pounds. Some of my days in the field carry me 8 or more miles walking. So like a back packer every pound counts. Up until now the TSN-DA3 was very important to keep my kit functioning and secure. So I carried that 2 + additional pounds.

At the Space Coast Festival two different people showed me a new Adapter. Angie “just a birder” bought one she is excited and bragging about hers. It was of high quality machined Aluminum that will work with 4/3 camera as well as some DSLR and P&S cameras. A minor sleeve change (inner ring) and it will adapt to any spotting scope eyepiece. It is not expensive and best of all the weight of the camera stresses the scope not the filter threads of the lens. There for a support bracket is not necessary, cutting my carry weight 2+ pounds. I ordered one.

Yesterday I received my Digidapter. I watched the video on www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVGfQTd8UPQl for quick assembly instructions. I inspected it for deficits like over engineering or a key feature not considered. I could not any faults. It was designed for quality, for the speed and smoothness in mounting the camera on a scope coming back to same position each time without adjustment or alignment.

•The fasteners are of the highest quality, brass and stainless.

•The screw design for mounting the camera in the tripod mount is superior.

•The brass stop screws on the mounting plate are designed for finger tightening, no fear of stripping the brass parts from over tightening. The camera comes back to the same spot every time.

•The elevation plate has milled slots so only the provided Allen key is necessary to lock the camera in place.

•The camera does not have to be removed from the Digidapter to replace batteries and flash cards. .

• Coupling the camera to the eyepiece is a breeze. Close tolerance machining and the highest quality anodizing is why it is smooth and easy.

•To change from one scope manufacture to another or if the eyepiece is different in size all that is needed is a different inner ring, all of the other parts will remain the same. This means for those scope owners that would like a functional adapter for a Pentax, Celestron, Vortex or Vanguard scope it is now available at a reasonable price.

•Overall, it is solid and functional, easy to use, returns to the same position with each mounting. No binding, pieces glide together, no effort. Precision and effortless in use, protecting the camera and eyepiece from stress damage. No adapter that I have seen mounts the camera and has it ready to shoot faster, safer and with more precision.

•The Digidapter is the best I have seen.

The big question at the Space Coast Festival was would the new 20mm f/1.7 ll ASPH Lumix lens works with this adapter. That lens is short like a Pancake lens but it is about 2 inches in diameter. I phoned my order to Paul Sayegh the owner and designer of the Digidapter. We spent hours on the phone discussing the 4/3s and some of the unique lenses that this system is creating. I had the lens in hand with a pair of dial calipers. I measured and re-measured the key points of the lens and measurement in relation to the camera. I took and then emailed to Paul the photos of the GX 7 and lens and added the measurement to the photos. After receiving the photos we talked again and at Paul’s request I re-measured everything once more. In three days I received my Digidapter and it was perfect.

Paul is an engineer, a designer, a communicator and a great machinist with an advanced knowledge of stress and tolerances. Paul is a big lens photographer that found Digiscoping and knows the importance of Digiscoping as a tool in photography. Digidapter and Paul Sayegh deserve our support.

Le due facce della lama della cinquedea, arma da parata, sono decorate da girali vegetali e guerrieri nudi, ai quali succedono, procedendo verso l’elsa, due figure femminili entro medaglioni sorretti da amorini, una delle quali compie un sacrificio, e quattro scene mitologiche. Su una faccia Ercole e Anteo e un liocorno circondato da giovani; sull’altra due scene di offerta con Marte e Plutone. La linea tormentata del disegno riconduce alla produzione pittorica ferrarese, influenzata dalla cultura mantegnesca, come nella cinquedea del museo Stibbert, realizzata da Ercole dei Fedeli, o a quella della collezione Wallace (Londra). Sull’impugnatura, a doppia piramide, sono rappresentate le Virtù cardinali; sul pomo, a ventaglio, S. Giorgio e il drago e la Conversione di Saulo. Tali parti non sono originali; furono probabilmente prodotte da falsari per conto dell’antiquario veneziano Antonio Sanquirico, fratello dello scenografo Alessandro, dal quale Carlo Alberto acquistò diversi esemplari, tra cui il pezzo in esame.

My word shall be revealed to you at all times and in all places. No matter where or when, or how adverse the environment is, I will show you clearly and My heart shall be revealed to you if you look to Me with your heart; this way you will run down the road ahead and never lose your way” (“Chapter 13” of Utterances of Christ in the Beginning). “Yes indeed!” I thought. “There is nothing God cannot do, and everything is administered in God’s hands. Because of this, whenever I encountered a real difficulty, I would feel anxious and worried, and I saw that my faith in God was so very small! Seeing as I was a believer in God, I should learn how to rely on God and look to God in all things—this was crucial, and it was the greatest wisdom. After I’d come to understand these things, I said prayers of obedience to God every day, and my heart grew calmer and calmer.

Why it works.

Steam in the top, compressed air out of the bottom. Dual action piston on top cycles automatically with a "Shortend Stroke" valve (that's the small rod in the center) to drive the main rod that compresses atmospheric air, intake from a filter, to a pressure vessel (tank) to maintain the brake line pressure. If the line is dumped, or slowly released, springs on each car in the train no longer hold the brakes away from the wheels, which apply the brakes until line pressure is restored, releasing the brakes by overcoming the springs. Each brake shoe is balanced in equilibrium with all the others, applying exactly the same dynamic pressure evenly along the entire train. There are many ways to compress air, this is the most common on steam locomotives.

 

Identical pumps can also be used to compress feed water into the boiler, so often there will be two compressors on the fireman's side of the engine. One to maintain the boiler water level and one to maintain the brake system air pressure.

 

Why not just use steam pressure? Steam pressure changes depending on the load of the locomotive and this isolates that variability. But more importantly, steam condenses into water when cooled, taking up less volume -decreasing the pressure - applying the brakes, and worse is the maintenance nightmare of water rusting the interior of the brake system parts. The moisture in the air, when compressed, precipitates out and is caught in the first pressure storage tank, which is why one finds a drain valve at the bottom of it.

A Native American woman stands in the forest with her friend, a large mountain lion. The woman has a painted face, and wears a deer skin dress and a brown fur shawl. The big cat stands next to her with its head just under her hand. Both the woman and the cougar look at you the viewer as if you have disturbed them in their peaceful woods.

 

This was based on a story I heard as a kid. I've never been able to find the title or a reference to it though. It goes roughly like this:

One winter, a Creek Indian village was having a hard time. The harvest was small and the winter was cold. The people were hungry.

 

Among them was a man named Panther. Panther went out hunting to help feed his people. Unable to find game in the village's usual hunting ground, he decided to trespass in the forest of a sorceress.

 

In those woods, he came to a river where the sorceress was bathing. He hid behind some rocks and spied upon her. She was beautiful and Panther was smitten by her.

The sorceress took pity on Panther and gave him a magic arrow. Whenever he dropped the arrow on the ground, it would point in the direction to go and find game. However, she told him that he had to return the arrow by the next full moon.

 

Red Panther used the arrow to find many deer over the next few days which he killed and brought back to his village where he was acclaimed a hero. Soon was the day of the next full moon. Panther new he had to take the arrow back to the sorceress, but he did not want to give up the acclaim he had achieved so he decided to keep the arrow.

 

The next week, he went out hunting but did not return. Other hunters followed his tracks. They headed towards the sorceress's woods. On the way, they changed from the tracks of a man to those of a cat. When they reached the woods, the hunters saw the sorceress. They dared not approach her though, for now she was guarded by a large panther.

Freemasons have been meeting for 125 years in West Elgin.

 

West Elgin Lodge 386 celebrated the anniversary with a black tie ceremony Nov. 5 at the Rodney Legion.

 

It's no secret the fraternity has been supporting the community.

 

By donating $21,000 for the Rodney pool when it was built and more recently $1,500 for St.Thomas-Elgin General Hospital the Freemasons have become the backbone of the area, said Andy Cipu, director of the ceremony Friday night.

 

Freemasons claim to be the oldest and largest worldwide fraternity dedicated to the brotherhood of man under the fatherhood of a Supreme Being.

 

At first, the Freemasons were stonemasons who built cathedrals in the 1600s. When cathedral building declined, the guild began to open its doors to other craftsmen.

 

The first recorded meeting in what is today, West Elgin, was the McColl Lodge, Nov. 6, 1879 at Trigger Hall, west of the village of Bismarck (West Lorne).

 

The first elected Master was Worship Brother Kenneth McKenzie and the first secretary was Worship Brother Hugh McColl, after whom the lodge was named.

 

The first meeting of the Rodney Lodge was held June 25, 1885, it is believed in the old Vogan Block on Furnival Road.

 

In the mid 1990s, both the McColl Lodge and the Rodney Lodge were declining in membership.

 

Cipu has been a Mason for 50 years. He recalls the work done to have the Grand Lodge and Board of General Purpose grant an amalgamation between the two Lodges.

 

On March 28, 2003 at the Rodney Temple, on Queen St., Cipu, the Grand Lodge Officer saw the West Elgin Lodge become a reality.

 

He said 14 new members joined the lodge last year and the fraternity is steeped with local prominence.

 

'We're really strong.' said Cipu.

 

Former mayors, doctors, funeral directors, church leaders and businessmen have frequented the lodge at its monthly meetings throughout the freemasons history here, said Cipu.

 

He said the group is not religious but religious in principle.

 

To be a member, the man must believe in a Supreme Being. No atheists allowed, said Cipu.

 

The fraternity is incorporated, serving the interests of local charities and morally supporting the leaders of local institutions.

 

?We do amazing things here,? said Cipu, adding the fraternity is open for more members.

 

At the 125 ceremony, Master Worship Brother Donald Mumby, from the Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario greeted a large concourse of members and wives.

 

Also, District Deputy Grand Master, George Akers and Worship Master, Kevin Schleihauf made presentations.

The last few days have been a flurry of activity with building on the river and wet lands. But, in between I have gone to a bunch of new places and back to some of my favorite venues.

 

Xavier & I love to salsa. So we did a search and wham, we found >Latin Palace Dance Club. Couples were dancing in dressy attire to wonderful salsa music. Wearing a tuxedo without a shirt and me in a short cocktail dress, it so reminded Xavier & me of Miami clubs.

 

A stopover at Organica to catch the last hour of DJ Qee's set woke us up with a nice psy jolt! So good to hear Qee's dynamic sounds and see old friends.

 

A brand new club called Fear FM sent me a tp. I got to meet owner/builder Cypher Webb. Beautifully built by Cypher, he was also spinning an awesome set of hardstyle and goth rock. I had a blast there. Cypher is also recruiting DJ's so peeps, give him a shout!

 

It was so late on Thursday night (Fri morn?) that I just had to stop off and say hi to DJ Xavi at The Cave. Owner Tasty Hax was there, too. I run into her at every party!

 

Friday afternoon, I got a tp from one of the builders. I ended up at Blackhearts 80's club. I love the funkiness of this club. So simple. It feels like a rock n roll club. Halloween was coming and the Pillsbury Dough Boy showed up! LOL!

 

Late night, and Xavier & I headed for DJ Nebulae's set at Piranha. Xavi loves this club. He set his JMD Effects hud on and we were in psy heaven. We always have fun at Shad's club!

 

In between all the craziness, I hit New Berlin's Electro Smog. Gee... I can't seem to get enough of this place. Zap Hax was hosting and DJ djleftydc Denja was spinning a sweet set of tunes.

 

Another new place I landed upon was Le Ghetto Hype. This is a fun club of alternative and eclectic tunes. Owner DJ Frederick Neberle & partner ARNAUD Mureaux have built a wonderful place to hang.

 

Off to Divaz Lounge! DJ 8wall Wrigglesworth just sent me a tp! OMG, 8wall is spinning at Divaz.

I met 8wall at Dance Island last year and then over at Nutrie. He spins a very chill set of house and minimal tunes.

 

But, the highlight of my night was at Old Factory listening to DJ Jeangilles Anthony. This frenchman is an artist. Beautiful industrial noise layered with a hardstyle beat... then transcending into experimental music... psychedelic experimental noise. LOL! and I fell asleep there... just couldn't leave!

 

Late night on Friday, Xavier and I ended up at DJ Digital Francis' Le Pardis de Digital Nation. It was an after party and Digi was spinning. Xavi & Digi started a "stump me" game. I think Digital was very impressed with Xavier's musical knowledge. They bro-downed the entire night leaving me and DJ Snowkitty dumbfounded... 'cause neither of us knew any of the tunes. LOL! I think Xavier has a new favorite dj now!

We arrived at Innisfree as soon as it opened at 10AM one mid-August morning when the entire Northeastern US was in the middle of a record heatwave. Despite the heat and humidity, we were able to make a quick 1.5 mile circle on the path around the deep glacial lake at the heart of this 150 acre garden before we wilted and had to return to our air conditioned car. The harsh mid-day light made photography challenging, as you can see. We learned that Innisfree, said by some to be one of the world's Ten Great Gardens, opens at sunrise on three occasions each year, and we are already planning another trip to the Hudson River Valley in the future when we hope we can see and photograph this amazing place under better conditions.

"In the late 1920s, Walter Beck and his wife, avid gardener and heiress Marion Burt Beck, began work on Innisfree, their country residence in Millbrook, New York. Walter Beck’s fascination with Asian art influenced his painting, the collecting he and his wife pursued, and their ideas on garden design. In the 1930s, Beck discovered the work of 8th-century Chinese poet, painter and garden maker Wang Wei. Studying scroll paintings of his famed garden, the Wangchuan Villa, Beck observed that Wang created carefully defined, inwardly focused gardens and garden vignettes within a larger, naturalistic landscape. Wang’s place-making technique — christened “cup gardens,” by Beck — influenced centuries of Chinese and Japanese garden design. It is also the principal design motif in the Innisfree landscape. Like his Chinese predecessor, Beck created three-dimensional pictures in the garden, incorporating both rocks from the site and horticultural advice from his wife. The genius of this place lies not so much in the ideas which the designers formulated for the cup gardens, many of which are disarmingly simple, but in the way they have been maintained over the years. Essentially, everything is allowed to settle into the prevailing spirit of the place; if it does not, it is removed. It is this sensitivity, care and attention to the qualities of landscape, natural and made, that make Innisfree such a memorable success.

Saturday 26 October 2013: Mandalay (မန္တလေး)

 

Our free day in Mandalay (မန္တလေး) (map) started with a walking tour of Ze Cho / Zegyo market, led by Josh, which was really interesting. The group then split into those who did a sight seeing tour with Josh as an optional extra (why not include it - as we found out, DIY in Mandalay is far harder than elsewhere), and Joelle, Anna, Miriam and I who opted to try out hand at taking in the sights on public transport.... where we had variable success: finding the bus stops near the market was tricky, but we had lots of help from local people (and even more offers from taxi drivers who wanted to take us on a tour), but unfortunately our first bus got a flat type somewhere on 32nd Street, and the next bus we hopped on to get us up to the cluster of pagodas north east of the Mandalay Palace (မန္တလေး နန်းတော်) complex charged us 1000k each (I think the local fare was closer to 100k-200k).... At least our adventures on public transport meant I got familiar with numbers written in Burmese script.

 

Along with the Palace, several of the pagodas are covered by a $10 combined ticket, but we decided to avoid those and focused instead on "the world's biggest book" - aka the inscribed marble 'tomb stones' at Kuthodaw Pagoda (ကုသိုလ်တော်‌ဘုရား) (although getting into it we took the "scenic route" around the perimeter walls and through some goat-filled woods). We did get to see the beautiful carved teak of the Shwe Nandaw Kyaung / Shwenandaw Monastery (ရွှေနန်းတော်ကျောင်း) through the bars of the railings that surround it, and the outside of the Atumashi Kyaung (အတုမရှိကျောင်း) monastery next door. We did a lot of walking, in vain, in search of the Sandamundi Pagoda - I think our directions/info was wrong as we wandered along long N-S streets and the military compounds that sit to the east of Mandalay Hill.

 

Having sat on a very slow bus back to the Ze Cho / Zegyo market area, we cut out losses and negotiated with a private taxi driver to take us to the sights south west of the city centre, which proved 3000k each well spent as he took us to the quiet (free) entrances to the stunning Maha Muni Pagoda (မဟာမုနိဘုရားကြီး), where the (male) faithful stick gold leaf offerings onto the ever growing Sacred Living Image of the Buddha, and the Shwe In Bin Kyaung, where we got to go inside the beautiful carved teak monastery building and to wander around the grounds (almost) all by ourselves.

 

At 4 o'clock we rendezvoused in the reception of the Silver Star Hotel, and were driven to Mandalay Hill (မန္တလေးတောင်), where sadly the rain impinged on our sunset views over Mandalay but (re)visting the Kuthodaw Pagoda en route (would have been nice to have been told that this morning). Still, dinner at the really super Super 81 made up for the rain - a feast, and a bargain to boot!

Why is it always Kentville ? Now it's the library ? First came the loss of the Railway and Day-liner service back in 1989, then Kings council expropriated the local Airport and evicted the many other established aviation schools and businesses, they had tried to take Grand street parade away from Kentville in 2017, and then we lost the famous Cornwallis Inn logo and the 88 yrs old statue in Halifax was torn down, they then terminated Apple Blossom Princess Kentville and ended the 87 consecutive years of the Queen Annapolisa pageant. Kentville lost a massive amount of diversity provided by the many nearby villages that always participated in the Festival, as the well elimination of the Princess teas, the Coronation, and all of the popular mid-week public outdoor entertainment always held at Memorial Park during ABF week ? And now they appear to be after the popular long time Kentville Library ?

After the Town has terminated so many traditional sources of public enjoyment while never offering a similar replacement, and, as Kentville gradually approaches cultural ghost town status, it is noticeable that the downtown business core (in which the Mayor has a major private business interest ) has been totally renovated and restored to pristine condition by way of a complete 100 % makeover beautification program complete with new installations of street paving, street paint, new double sidewalks on both sides, new driveway entrances, new curb and gutter both sides, signage and flower pots ? And the other three surrounding streets making up this downtown business block have also been totally upgraded including Aberdeen Street (twice), Cornwallis Street and Main Street ?

DE VLIEGERIJ EN ZIJN BETEKENIS VOOR HET MISSIEWERK

 

Een apart hoofdstuk over de missievliegerij lijkt me hier wel op z'n plaats, omdat de missie zonder dat bedrijf nooit had kunnen doen wat zij heeft gedaan.

Al lang was het duidelijk dat de missie in Nieuw Guinea op een gegeven moment gebruik zou moeten maken van eigen vliegtuigen. De bevoorrading van de posten over land zou op de duur een te grote belasting gaan vormen voor de plaatselijke bevolking. Bovendien zou de groei van de missie

belemmerd worden als er niet een betere en meer frequente manier zou worden gevonden om de posten in het binnenland te voorzien in hun materiële en personele behoeften. Missievliegerij was noodzakelijk wilde de missie blijven functioneren en uitgroeien. Gestart in 1958 zou de missievliegerij rond de jaren 1965-1969 zorgen voor een grote verandering: een verandering die niet alleen de bevoorrading van de posten betrof, maar ook het contact van de posten onderling. De radiozenders, die noodzakelijk waren voor het vliegverkeer, zorgden er ook voor dat de communicatie tussen de missionarissen beter en intensiever werd.

Over het ontstaan en de geschiedenis van de missievliegerij wil ik het hier niet hebben: die is elders al uitvoerig beschreven. Ook niet hoe missionarissen een eigen vliegveld moesten aanleggen en de problemen die daaraan verbonden waren, want zelf heb ik nooit een vliegveld hoeven aan te leggen en zijn mij de zorgen daaromtrent bespaard gebleven. Wel heb ik van mijn medebroeders vernomen dat het aanleggen van een vliegveld een heidens karwei was. Meestal volgde de ene ontgoocheling na de ander, voordat het vliegveld eindelijk goedgekeurd werd door de piloten. Niet dat de piloten in hun eisen onredelijk waren, maar zij waren zich terdege bewust van hun verantwoordelijkheden wilden het graag zelf ook overleven.

Meestal moest zo'n missionaris een paar jaar al zijn energie geven aan het aanleggen van een eigen strip. Wanneer hij dan eindelijk dacht klaar te zijn en een testvlucht kreeg (vlucht over de strip heen), kreeg hij meestal te horen wat er nog aan mankeerde wilde de strip goedgekeurd worden. En

met dat "wat er nog aan mankeerde" was hij weer vier maanden of een half jaar bezig... En dan nog was het niet zeker of zijn strip door de piloten voor 100 procent vliegwaardig werd bevonden. Meestal volgde er dan wel een

testlanding en als die goed verliep kwam de piloot een paar keer met een halve lading. Maar om een volle lading te krijgen moest er meestal dit of dat nog "even" in orde gemaakt worden. En dan kon de missionaris er weer "even" tegen aan gaan staan. En dan te bedenken dat die vliegveldjes vaak op een schuine kant van een helling lagen of achter een bergje, dat de aan- of uitvlucht bemoeilijkte. Had er eenmaal een crash plaats gevonden, dan had het vliegveld van die missionaris een slechte naam bij de piloten. Het gevolg was dat bij slecht weer een vlucht op zijn vliegveld al snel gecanceld werd.

Het aanleggen van zo'n strip was veel tijdrovender en problematischer dan een keer een opvoer over land organiseren.

Vliegen in Nieuw Guinea, vooral in het bergland, was een riskante zaak. Bergen, regen, mist, verraderlijke windvallen, snel wisselende weersomstandigheden: het waren allemaal dingen waar een piloot regelmatig mee te maken kreeg. Als piloot in Nieuw-Guinea moest je de risico's op hun juiste waarde weten in te schatten: niet te voorzichtig (want dan kwam je nergens), maar ook niet onbezonnen. Een flexibele geest was beslist noodzakelijk: op de juiste momenten moest je kunnen improviseren. Een goed oriëntatievermogen was eveneens gewenst, want het instrumentenbord van een Cessna was maar beperkt.

Bij aanvang van het eigen missievliegbedrijf was men er van uit gegaan dat het bedrijf door paters gerund zou worden. Dus ook de piloten zouden paters zijn. De achterliggende gedachte hiervan was o.a. dat de missionaris op een eenzame post zodoende ook eens een medebroeder op bezoek zou

krijgen. In praktijk is dat nog al tegengevallen. Die paters-piloten hadden er meestal nog een andere functie bij, zodat een nachtje overblijven bij een medebroeder er meestal niet in zat.

Waren priesters nu geschikt als piloot? Theo Jansen, een lekenpiloot, zei me eens:: "Paters hebben een verkeerde opleiding en instelling om piloot te zijn!" Ik geloof dat ik begreep wat hij wilde zeggen. Als je piloot bent, heb je

daaraan een volledige en verantwoordelijke job, die niet toelaat dat je er ook nog iets bij doet. Bovendien worden paters voor alles en nog wat gevraagd en kunnen vaak maar moeilijk weigeren. Een leken-piloot heeft daar minder last van: hij wordt veel minder voor iets anders gevraagd en kan gemakkelijker weigeren.

Van de drie paters die in Hilversum een pilotenopleiding hadden gevolgd, werd er één al direct bij aankomst in Nieuw-Guinea afgekeurd: hij bleek zich onvoldoende te kunnen oriënteren tussen de bergen. Bovendien was hij te zenuwachtig. De tweede maakte al spoedig een crash, waarbij de vier inzittenden ternauwernood aan de dood ontsnapten: van verder vliegen zag hij maar af. En de derde vloog in de mist tegen een boom : hij overleefde het niet. Het was dus geen succes, die vliegende paters franciscanen. Evenmin bij de broeders franciscanen. De eerste broeder verongelukte al bij de tweede of derde solovlucht: hij bracht het er gelukkig levend vanaf. De tweede broeder piloot vloog tegen een berg, waarbij alle inzittenden om het leven kwamen.

Lag het misschien aan de franciscanen dat het zo vaak mis ging? Het begon er wel op te lijken, want een broeder van de Kruisheren, die na zijn uittreden piloot bij de missievliegerij werd, bleek een zeer bekwame piloot te zijn. Maar ook hij kwam na jarenlang uitstekend vliegen bij een ongeluk om. Van de leken-piloten echter is, ofschoon ze bijna allemaal wel eens gecrasht zijn, niemand omgekomen (behalve dan die uitgetreden broeder en een Indonesische piloot). Vliegen was dus beslist niet zonder gevaren, en alle missionarissen hebben dat op een of andere manier wel eens ondervonden. Allemaal hebben ze wel eens een hachelijk moment beleefd. Zelf heb ik twee keer in mijn rats

gezeten.

Vanuit Enarotali moest ik eens naar Moanemani. Ik zou als eerste afgezet worden en de piloot zou met twee andere passagiers doorvliegen naar Timeepa en dan naar de kust. Waarom weet ik niet, maar onderweg besloot de piloot (Theo Jansen) van de route af te wijken en eerst naar Timeepa te

gaan. Vermoedelijk omdat het daar tegen de middag nogal eens winderig kan zijn met het risico van een landing met staartwind. Pater Zwartjes in Timeepa gaf, voordat hij zich naar het vliegveld begaf, via de radiozender aan ons door dat er geen wind was. Maar nog voordat hij op het vliegveld was aangekomen (een kwartier lopen) was de wind opeens opgestoken. Terug naar huis gaan om ons via de zender voor die wind te waarschuwen, had geen zin meer: we waren al vlak bij de strip. De piloot zette de landing in, maar boven de strip merkte hij dat de wind te sterk was en hij besloot door te starten. De wind was echter zo sterk dat hij geen hoogte meer kon maken. We vlogen recht op een Ekagi-hut af. Ik dacht: dit is het einde. Rakelings scheerden we over de hut. Daar waren we goed vanaf gekomen. Maar meteen deed zich het volgende probleem al voor: rechtdoor vliegen was onmogelijk vanwege de bergen die meteen achter de strip opdoemden.

De piloot was dus gedwongen om met geringe hoogte een bocht te nemen. Dat lukte hem ook wonder wel, al was het dat we tussen de bomen door vlogen. Misschien droom ik daarom nog wel eens dat we tussen bomen door vliegen en er niet uit kunnen komen. Een tweede landingspoging lukte beter, maar toen we uitstapten stond de piloot te trillen op zijn benen. Later hoorden we dat zich drie mensen in die hut bevonden en dat het vliegtuig alle dakbedekking van het huis had weggezogen.

Little changed since its construction in 1924, the ropeway is used to bring shale from a quarry on Claughton Moor, approximately a mile and a quarter distant from, and 750 ft above, Hanson Brick Works.

 

At the quarry, shale is lifted by a front loading shovel and moved up a ramp to be tipped into an initial crusher, and fed into the loading bunker, from which the ropeway buckets are loaded. Having made the journey to the works, the shale is either tipped into dry stock, or loaded into a dump-truck and moved into the stocking area.

 

The remaining ropeway is one of two, originally constructed to serve the east and west works. That to the west works was taken out of use when that works ceased operation in 1990. The trestles of the former route to the west works remain, although the rope is now gone. Both routes started together at the quarry and radiated out in basically straight lines, to cross the A683 about a quarter of a mile apart. The remaining route has 26 trestles and from the works, initially climbs gently across an open field before climbing more steeply up the wooded valley side. About half way into its journey, the ropeway emerges from the woods to climb more gently across open moorland, before finally following the line of a narrow tributary valley for the last section. A couple of trestles before the top, there is a slight bend to the right to take the route into the top station.

 

The ropeway is powered by gravity. The extra weight of the loaded buckets pulls the empties back to the loading point. There is a braking system to maintain the correct speed and allow the rope to be brought to a controlled stand when required.

 

When "on the rope" the buckets are suspended from a hanger, the head of which has two free running wheels, and two clips. The clips sit on top of the rope, to which they are held fast by a combination of gravity and friction between the rope and the clips. As a bucket approaches the top or bottom station, the wheels engage with a rising Bull rail to lift the clips off the rope. The bucket is then free to run along this rail, which allows it to be manually controlled during the loading and unloading processes.

 

The loading and unloading operations require two men at each end of the ropeway and are achieved in an average time of 20 to 30 seconds.

 

At the loading point the first operator catches the bucket as it comes off the up rope onto the guide rail and guides it to a stop underneath the loading chute then returns to take the next bucket. The second operator loads the bucket, pushes it around the guide rail then releases it onto the down rope at the correct moment to maintain the desired speed of the moving rope. Typically this is when the previously loaded bucket can be seen to be two trestles into its journey. This maintains the optimum weight distribution between upward moving empty and downward moving filled buckets.

 

The ropeway generally operates with between 40 and 46 buckets with a round trip for an individual bucket of about 32 minutes. The daily capacity is 250 tonnes.

The summit of Crich Hill is reputed to have been the site of a Beacon Fire, which signalled the sighting of the Spanish Armada in the English Channel in 1588. It is believed that after the thrashing the Spanish received from Drake, his ships and the good old English weather, it was again used to celebrate the victory. In 1988 this most famous naval victory was again celebrated on its 400th anniversary with a new Beacon Post and Brazier being built and in 2002 it was again rebuilt as a cairn and brazier to commemorate HM The Queen's Golden Jubilee.

 

In 1734 there were a number of small lime kilns on the Hill and the public footpath which runs across the Hill to Crich is believed to have been used by Salt Merchants who packed the salt on horses or mules, transporting it southwards from the Cheshire area.

 

THE TOWER

 

The first record of any tower type structure is during the reign of King George III (1760) when a wooden tower was erected to provide both a landmark and a place from which to take in some of the best views available. It is thought that this tower was erected to mark his accession to the Throne. Owing to its wooden construction in such an exposed area, it only lasted about 25 years before being demolished. In 1788, Francis Hurt paid the princely sum of 210 to have a conical limestone tower with a wooden top constructed on the site of the old tower. By about 1843 the conical tower was in such a poor state of repair that a decision was taken to rebuild and in 1849 some of the stones of this conical tower were used to build the base of the new circular tower that was built from grit stone.

 

The circular tower was opened in 1851 (the year of the Great Exhibition) and it had a stone stairway winding up inside. An engraved tablet set in the wall at the top showed that the tower was 955 feet above sea level.

 

It could be said that this tower was the forerunner of The Sherwood Foresters Memorial. In June 1856 it was the scene of a jubilant crowd celebrating the end of the Crimean War (1854-56) and Sergeant Wetton of the 95th Derbyshire Regiment, a resident of Crich, was carried to the top of the Hill in a specially adapted chair as he had lost a leg at the Battle of the Alma (20th September 1854). There is no doubt that he would have been happy that the war was over, but it is certain that he would have remembered his Regimental Family and the comrades who never came home. In 1881 the 95th Derbyshire Regiment joined the 45th Nottinghamshire Regiment to form The Sherwood Foresters.

 

In June of 1882 there was a major landslide in the area of the quarry and this had a serious subsidence effect on the tower, lightning strikes and further minor movements of the ground in the immediate area resulted in the closing of the tower to the public for reasons of safety.

Le centre de production horticole, c'est 13 300 m2 de serres qui figurent sans doute parmi les plus modernes et performantes du pays. "Nous n'avons pas voulu nous contenter de remplacer les vieilles serres de Créteil et Limeil-Brévannes, explique Thierry

Deman, responsable de la production florale et arboricole de Plaine centrale. Notre objectif, c'était de créer un site de production qui garantisse un haut rendement, respecte l'environnement et offre au personnel de bonnes conditions de travail. C'est

pourquoi nous nous sommes inscrits dans une démarche HQE (haute qualité environnementale) de développement durable."

C'est ainsi que les constructions ont été intégrées dans leur environnement, que les serres ont été travaillées et disposées pour limiter au maximum l'impact visuel, que les arbres et les haies existants ont été préservés et que les matériaux choisis (bois,

verre, aluminium, acier inoxydable, linoléum, peintures sans solvant) l'ont été pour leurs faibles nuisances environnementales.

À l'intérieur, la plupart des réseaux ont été enterrés et l'éclairage a été réalisé avec des luminaires basse luminancepour améliorer le confort visuel.

Les équipements bruyants ont été mis dans des lieux isolés pour limiter les nuisances sonores, des siphons ont été placés régulièrement sur les dallages pour faciliter le nettoyage du sol, des ouvrants de pignons et de toiture ont été installés pour permettre

le brassage et le renouvellement de l'air.

Des économies d'eau et d'énergie

Mais le respect de la démarche HQE est surtout sensible dans la gestion économique et écologique de l'énergie et de l'eau.

De nombreuses dispositions ont ainsi été prises pour réaliser des économies de chauffage et améliorer le confort de travail du personnel (énergie humaine) : orientation des serres dans l'axe nord-sud pour un ensoleillement maximum, utilisation d'un verre spécial pour une filtration positive des rayons solaires (rétention

des UVA), régulation informatisée du climat et installation d'une chaudière à grand volume d'eau, mise en place de chaînes de production pour diminuer les déplacements, les efforts et contraintes physiques, concentration des aires de culture

autour de la galerie de travail.

Par ailleurs, tout a été conçu pour limiter les prélèvements d'eau et supprimer les rejets. C'est ainsi qu'un bassin de récupération des eaux de toiture a été réalisé et qu'un système d'arrosage, fondé sur le drainage et le recyclage des eaux de sol

a été mis en œuvre (voir encadré).

Ce sont bien, ainsi, des serres du XXIe siècle qui ont ouvert à Mandres-les-Roses. Un univers de fleurs et de plantes vertes certes, mais aussi de tapis de convoyage, de ponts roulants et de chariots mécaniques, car l'automatisation est omniprésente et a

permis à chaque étape de la production (rempotage, fertilisation ...) et de la manutention (transport du terreau, des plaques de culture ...) d'éliminer la plupart des tâches pénibles. Quant aux ordinateurs dont la présence peut également surprendre, ils

gèrent, ni plus ni moins que le chauffage, l'arrosage et le climat.

Un système d'arrosage innovant

En matière de développement durable et de protection de l'environnement, les serres communautaires se situent à la pointe de la technologie. Alors que les dégâts causés aux nappes phréatiques par les engrais et traitements divers sont depuis longtemps avérés et que l'eau devient un bien de plus en plus précieux, les serres communautaires ne polluent pas et permettent de réaliser des économies. Elles le doivent à l'installation d'un système d'arrosage qui met en œuvre le recyclage des eaux d'arrosage et la récupération des eaux de pluie (ou eaux de toiture). Comme le montre le schéma ci-dessous, le recyclage des eaux d'arrosage s'effectue par filtration à travers une toile perméable et une couche de roche volcanique au pouvoir tampon, disposées sous les plantes. Les eaux de pluie, elles, sont récupérées dans un bassin de 500 m3. Après mélange et fertilisation dans une station de pompage, eaux de pluie et d'arrosage sont dirigées sur les rampes d'arrosage.

Oltre i “relitti” di Space Metropoliz (il telescopio di Gian Maria Tosatti, i muri dipinti di Sten & Lex, Lucamaleonte, Mr. Klevra, Hogre, la bandiera di Paolo Assenza, l’orto lunare di Fabio Pennacchia, il grande razzo costruito dagli abitanti della fabbrica occupata con l’aiuto di Stalker), la Pinacoteca Domestica Diffusa, oltre venti opere di arte contemporanea collocate nelle case degli abitanti di Metropoliz e fotografata da Carlo Gianferro, la “Stanza dei Giochi” (intervento site specific per la ludoteca di Metropoliz ad opera di Veronica Montanino e Alice Pasquini), la “Cattedralehouse_room#2” (opere di Cristiano Petrucci, Gianni Asdrubali, Veronica Montanino), il 5 ottobre il MAAM presenterà le nuove acquisizioni e i lavori realizzati nel corso dell’estate.

Le due nuove stanze d’artista, “Windows M” di Maddalena Mauri e ”Where are the flowers gone” di Micaela Lattanzio. L’intervento murario, tutto in polvere di grafite, che Maddalena Mauri realizza per il nuovo spazio galleria di Metropoliz, moltiplica le finestre della grande stanza dove un tempo stagionavano i salami della Fiorucci, invitando il mondo ad entrare. Un auspicio, per la fabbrica occupata, che coincide con il programma di eventi settimanali del nuovo spazio espositivo, uno dei dispositivi che il MAAM ha deciso di attivare per aprire con regolarità il cancello del 913 al quartiere e alla città, riducendo l’effetto enclave che pregiudizio e necessità di difendersi dallo sgombero rischiano di innescare. La porta “a saloon” della galleria che propone un enorme cuore diviso in due è un’opera di Paolo Angelosanto. La stanza di Micaela Lattanzio è invece uno spazio intimo, un invito alla “meditazione”, un’oasi di pace per chi, come il Chaplin di “Tempi moderni”, si trova incastrato ogni giorno nei meccanismi della metropoli (i suoi fiori di carta, oltre seimila, si liberano dagli ingranaggi e volano via…). Un luogo, questa preziosa stanza “fiorita”, che sembra condividere lo spirito delle stanze de Les Nymphéas di Monet all’Orangerie.

“District 913” tira via il telo anche sulla nuova “piazza” realizzata da Massimo Di Giovanni con L.U.N.A. una enorme sfera di ferro e legno che l’artista incastra tra le travi di un tetto crollato, che lo stesso Di Giovanni ha restaurato e messo in sicurezza). L’opera ha voluto rendere un omaggio all’idea della migrazione esoplanetaria alla conquista della luna narrata dalla favola contemporanea “Space Metropoliz” e all’idea che, lavorando tutti insieme, l’Altrove lo si possa alla fine portare sulla Terra. Altre grandi sfere saranno disseminate nella fabbrica da EPVS, a rendere il percorso difficile e claustrofobico (EPVS_ Bubbling 4 you #913# by EPVS).

 

Molto rilevanti anche i nuovi interventi di street art realizzati a Metropoliz. Dal grande muro d’ingresso sulla via Prenstina, firmato Borondo, e realizzato in collaborazione con la 999 Contemporary, alla meridiana di Rub Kendy (.R.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N.), allo stencil di Lucamaleonte che riproduce, sulla facciata dell’ex-salumificio che guarda ai recenti scavi archeologici del lotto di fronte, il bassorilievo dei Musei Capitolini raffigurante la caccia al cinghiale. E ancora Alice Pasquini, Solo (con “Plan D, last level”), Diamond (con la porta “Welcome to Metropoliz”), Opiemme (“Questo muro ha un nuovo messaggio”). E ancora Giulio Vesprini, Gio Pistone, Cancelletto, omino71.

 

Tra le nuove opere acquisite dal MAAM segnaliamo quelle di Pablo Echaurren (“Suburbano disumano”), a cura di ARIA [rivista d’artista], Massimo Attardi (“Lang”, un omaggio all’autore di “Metropolis” che strizza l’occhio anche al gioco “facce di luna” di “Space Metropoliz”), Guendalina Salini (che ripropone in collezione permanente l’installazione “Dove comincia il lontano”), gli interventi murari di Marco Tamburro, Seboo Migone, Paolo Assenza, l’opera di Germano Serafini ”Composizione M”, quella di Michela de Mattei “Metropolitz. In getting students excited about the topics being discussed, he brings his own enthusiasm to the classroom. He works hard keep up with the research literature in the field, and brings to the table the experiences he has as the principal investigator of a genetics/molecular biology research lab. A “very approachable and straightforward” lecturer, he also puts all his lecture notes online, makes it clear what the quizzes and tests will focus on, “tries to keep the class’s stress levels to a minimum.” “He treats all his students with respect,” and is “always willing to meet with people.”

 

His courses include Genetics & Molecular Biology, Eukaryotic Molecular Genetics, and Biology in the Age of the Human Genome Project, which focuses on the science behind the Human Genome Project and the ways in which it will change our lives. Most of his teaching is done in the traditional lecture style (some case studies are used), which he supplements with animations. He encourages questions and comments from students (“even when it is a large class in a lecture hall”), and students say that “he is incredibly approachable and thoughtful and is passionate about genetics.”

A 'kitchen sink solution' on jobs

The center-left Washington think tank Third Way is holding a forum Wednesday to discuss the merits of allowing companies to bring the $1 trillion in profits parked overseas back to the United States at a temporarily reduced tax rate.

The morning forum at Union Station will include Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.); Democratic Reps. Loretta Sanchez of California and Jared Polis of Colorado; former Service Employees International Union President Andy Stern; Duke Energy chief executive Jim Rogers; and George Schink, managing director of Navigant Economics.

Third Way’s vice president of communications, Sean Gibbons, said the forum is designed to determine whether the idea — which is anathema to many liberals — is a viable option for jump-starting U.S. job growth.

“We have unemployment near 9 percent. We’ve basically pulled every single lever we can as a government. … We’ve done almost everything we can to get the economy going. It’s time to throw in the kitchen sink. This is a kitchen sink solution,” Gibbons said. One trillion dollars “is a lot of coin. It’s sitting overseas. If we could bring over a significant portion of that back into the economy, we believe that would stimulate demand, and demand stimulates jobs.”

It’s not a perfect solution, Gibbons said, but one the Republican-controlled House might be willing to entertain.

He acknowledged that analysts don’t yet know how many jobs such a policy might create. But, he said, bringing money back to the U.S. creates demand, which in turn drives hiring.

The forum is the first public event of the think tank’s new corporate tax reform project directed by former Rep. Dan Maffei (D-N.Y.), who’s now a Third Way senior fellow.

Mais outre la pénurie de main d’œuvre, il faut faire face au manque de matériaux (béton, métal) et donc déployer des trésors d'imagination pour reconstruire les ponts détruits. Si le savoir faire des tailleurs de pierre est exploité, le plus spectaculaire est le relevage des ponts, comme le pont de Galliéni à Lyon, où 7 à 800 tonnes d'acier sont sorti de l'eau avec des moyens de l'époque. En avril 1945, il reste 5 700 ponts à reconstruire soit 200 000 tonnes d'acier, 600 000 tonnes de ciment, 250 000 m3 de bois, 10 millions de journées d'ouvrier, prix de l'effort de reconstruction.1945

A 'kitchen sink solution' on jobs

The center-left Washington think tank Third Way is holding a forum Wednesday to discuss the merits of allowing companies to bring the $1 trillion in profits parked overseas back to the United States at a temporarily reduced tax rate.

The morning forum at Union Station will include Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.); Democratic Reps. Loretta Sanchez of California and Jared Polis of Colorado; former Service Employees International Union President Andy Stern; Duke Energy chief executive Jim Rogers; and George Schink, managing director of Navigant Economics.

Third Way’s vice president of communications, Sean Gibbons, said the forum is designed to determine whether the idea — which is anathema to many liberals — is a viable option for jump-starting U.S. job growth.

“We have unemployment near 9 percent. We’ve basically pulled every single lever we can as a government. … We’ve done almost everything we can to get the economy going. It’s time to throw in the kitchen sink. This is a kitchen sink solution,” Gibbons said. One trillion dollars “is a lot of coin. It’s sitting overseas. If we could bring over a significant portion of that back into the economy, we believe that would stimulate demand, and demand stimulates jobs.”

It’s not a perfect solution, Gibbons said, but one the Republican-controlled House might be willing to entertain.

He acknowledged that analysts don’t yet know how many jobs such a policy might create. But, he said, bringing money back to the U.S. creates demand, which in turn drives hiring.

The forum is the first public event of the think tank’s new corporate tax reform project directed by former Rep. Dan Maffei (D-N.Y.), who’s now a Third Way senior fellow.

Isola Bella (Lago Maggiore)

 

Isola Bella (lit. 'beautiful island') is one of the Borromean Islands of Lago Maggiore in north Italy. The island is situated in the Borromean Gulf 400 metres from the lakeside town of Stresa. Isola Bella is 320 metres long by 400 metres wide and is divided between the Palace, its Italianate garden, and a small fishing village.

 

Until 1632 the island—known only as l’isola inferiore or isola di sotto—was a rocky crag occupied by a tiny fishing village: but that year Carlo III of the influential House of Borromeo began the construction of a palazzo dedicated to his wife, Isabella D'Adda, from whom the island takes its name. He entrusted the works to the Milanese Angelo Crivelli, who was also to be responsible for the planning the gardens. The works were interrupted around middle of the century when the Duchy of Milan was struck by a devastating outbreak of the plague.

 

Construction resumed when the island passed to Carlo’s sons, Cardinal Giberto III (1615–1672) and Vitaliano VI (1620–1690); the latter in particular, with the financial backing of his elder brother, entrusted the completion of the works to the Milanese architect Carlo Fontana and turned the villa into a place of sumptuous parties and theatrical events for the nobility of Europe.

 

The completion of the gardens, however, was left to his nephew Carlo IV (1657–1734). They were inaugurated in 1671.

 

The island achieved its highest level of social success during the period of Giberto V Borromeo (1751–1837) when guests included Edward Gibbon, Napoleon and his wife Joséphine de Beauharnais, and Caroline of Brunswick, the Princess of Wales. It is said that Caroline, having fallen in love with the place, did her best to convince the Borromeo family to sell her Isola Madre or the Castelli di Cannero islands; her request being turned down, she established herself on the banks of Lake Como at Cernobbio in the Villa d’Este.
