Located in Hong Kong’s North District and right next to Shenzhen’s Yantian District, Sha Tau Kok was designated as part of the Frontier Closed Area in 1951. Since then, Sha Tau Kok has been accessible only to individuals with a closed area permit. Back in the days when Sha Tau Kok was closed to non-residents, visiting the border town also required a guarantee from a local resident. As it begins to open gradually, Sha Tau Kok has become a great choice for weekend getaways.
The first phase of the opening of Sha Tau Kok began in June 2022, followed by the second phase starting January 2024. Visitors can board a kaito ferry to explore Sha Tau Kok and enjoy the area’s beautiful scenery, unique attractions and local delicacies, either independently or through local tours. You can also take a ferry to nearby islands and areas, such as Lai Chi Wo, Kat O, Ap Chau and Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark.

•The daily quota of visitors with the Tourism Closed Area Permit is set at 2,300 individuals, and 700 group visitors on weekends and public holidays. There is no quota limit for groups on weekdays.
•Individual travellers must enter Sha Tau Kok by public transport, with the addition of ferry services to Sha Tau Kok from Lai Chi Wo/Ap Chau/Kat O. Private cars are NOT allowed.
•Area: Sha Tau Kok (excluding Chung Ying Street).
•Opening hours: Every day from 7am to 9pm.

Η ύπαρξή του αποδεικνύει την εξουσία και τη δύναμη του Θεού και διακηρύσσει την ύπαρξη του Δημιουργού, και επιβεβαιώνει ξανά και ξανά την ταυτότητα και τη θέση του Δημιουργού. Δεν είναι απροσδιόριστο, ούτε απατηλό, αλλά είναι ένα αληθινό φως, ορατό από τον άνθρωπο. Από τη στιγμή εκείνη και μετά, σ’ αυτόν τον άδειο κόσμο στον οποίο “η δε γη ήτο άμορφος και έρημος· και σκότος επί του προσώπου της αβύσσου”, παρήχθη το πρώτο υλικό αγαθό. Αυτό το πράγμα είναι αποτέλεσμα των λέξεων από το στόμα του Θεού και εμφανίστηκε στην πρώτη πράξη της δημιουργίας όλων των πραγμάτων από τη εξουσία και τον λόγο του Θεού. Λίγο μετά, ο Θεός πρόσταξε να ξεχωρίσει το φως από το σκοτάδι… Όλα άλλαξαν και ολοκληρώθηκαν χάρη στον λόγο του Θεού… Ο Θεός αποκάλεσε αυτό το φως «Μέρα» και το σκοτάδι «Νύχτα». I've always been conflicted as to my feelings about Chinatowns, the hybrid nature of the environment throws me off in terms of how I want to capture it. Visually the space is very much like what I shoot when I'm back home in Hong Kong, it is dense, bright and textured. Yet the nature of the environment acts very much like the western city it is in, isolated, detached and common. It is exactly what it is, a recreation of one's natural habitat in a foreign land, a cultural theme park within a few city blocks.
Like a theme park, I find the familiar endearing and the differences absolutely annoying. Unable to accept the space for what it is, I complain about the things they aren't doing 'right', how it's done better back home, how this is just a mask of signs and lights thrown on to create an illusion of familiarity. I feel like a parent projecting their failures on to their children, how this space disappoints me as it doesn't live up to the standards I wish it can achieve.
When in fact, it is the fusion of the familiar with the odd that reminds me of the confused nature of my own identity. The ever difficult balancing act of assimilation into the culture of my adopted hometown, while desperately trying to hold onto whatever is left of my own. A visit to Chinatown reminds me of how futile my attempts are to remain Chinese while becoming American.
As I'm about to leave New York for another city, I've decided to confront this space, to stop trying to make it something it's not. To finally see it for what it is before trying to figure out another one. And in the process of understanding this hybrid space, maybe it'll allow myself to accept the fact that I've become what musically would be equivalent to a Canto Pop/Hip hop mashup. A set of opposing beats jammed together to form something that's confusing and fucked up, but has the potential to be quite interesting with some finessing.
