A Brief History

The Wirral Country Park stretches along the Wirral Peninsula's coastline overlooking The River Dee. Thurstaston Visitors Centre itself is a part of the Country Park and is a very popular tourist attraction and family day out in the Wirral.

In 1866 a railway line was opened along this coastal route, running for 12 miles. It started at the top-end in the seaside town of West Kirby, and continued through Caldy, Thurstaston, Gayton,Parkgate, Neston, Wilaston and Hooton. The line was largely used for agricultural purposes, but also servicedlocal day trippers heading out to West Kirby and Parkgate, as well. Unfortunately the line suffered during the first world war becoming uneconomical to run and in 1956, the line was closed to passengers and used solely for freight purposes. Finally by 1963 the line was closed completely. Today the remnants of this railway line is known as The Wirral Way, and it forms a several mile long public foot path. Itself part of a very popular coastal walk in the Wirral.

The coastal area surrounding the Wirral Way is serene and beautiful, with many stunning views over The Dee Estuary and across to Wales. This coastal view is also renowned for its splendid sunsets, and is many a photographers dream. Sunsets aside, the Dee estuary's mudflats reflect the sky's colours and sun's light providing further beautiful scenes, added to by the flocks of wading birds and water eroded channels.

Thanks to the new 1968 Countryside Act, this whole area was put under protection by Cheshire County Council as a conservation area and was called Wirral Country Park. Today the upkeep of the park is both undertaken by Cheshire County Council, who maintain the stretch between Hooton and Gayton, and Wirral County Park, who maintain the stretch between Gayton and West Kirby.

 

Thurstaston Visitors Centre

 

Thurstaston Visitors Centre can be regarded as the focal point of the park receiving the main volume of the park's total number of visitors per year. There are numerous leisure activities available at Thurstaston, an open expanse of grass to sit and picnic on, and the Visitors centre itself which houses a refreshment stand, a shop, a nature exhibit and tourism leaflets and information on what itself and the rest of the Wirral Peninsula has to offer. As such it is a popular tourist attraction in The Wirral, Merseyside and the North West of England as a whole.

The wirral rangers, who are responsible for the maintenance and conservation of the Park are themselves based at Thurstaston.

You can make the day as relaxing or energetic as you wish. From a family barbeque, to a game of rounders, to a relaxed stroll along the beach, there are many things to choose between...

 

Thurstaston Visitors Centre

 

This is the central visitors centre within the Wirral Country Park and is located at Thurstaston. It is a central organising point for tourists. There are various things on offer here. within the building is a shop selling various wildlife related products, for example bird feed, feeding stations to erect in your garden, books on nature and the local area, etc. An information desk is located next to the shop with a wide range of leaflets on the Wirral Country Park itself, local tourist attractions in Merseyside and the wider North West area and local wildlife spots; all freely available.

For further information the desk is also staffed with helpful Visitors Centre volunteers who will endeavor to answer any enquiries you may have, and you can also book ranger-lead activities here as well. There is an indoor 'nature trail' for children and adults to wonder through with local wildlife and information about the area's history on display.

Various amenities are also available; well kept toilet facilities, also offering a baby-changing area, are located within the visitors Centre, and a refreshment kiosk is situated on the front, adjoining the centre, with drinks, snacks and ice-cream to buy.

 

Thurstaston Visitors Centre Field

 

There is a large expanse of open grass situated by the Visitors Centre. Visitors are free to do as they please as long as respect is kept for the area's upkeep and wildlife - barbecues must be had within one of the designated areas. The spot is popular with tourists, families and local visitors for picnics, ball games, frisbee, or simply to sit and take in the spectacular view over the Dee Estuary mudflats with, Wales on the distant horizon.

There are numerous self-guided walks within this area, including the Wirral Coastal Walk. Excellent views gained by walking along the Thursaston cliffs which over look the beach below. You can in fact walk along the cliff top all the way back to Heswall, with the Heswall Fields to your left. If you feel like it you can follow the footpaths through the fields leading back up to the Wirral Way walk.

 

Thurstaston Visitors Centre Barbeque

 

There are two barbeque sites, the main one being located on the back edge of the open field area, within sight of the Visitors Centre. There is a built in brick barbeque, which you can place a disposable barbeque within. There are also a couple of picnic tables and benches to eat your food at.

This barbeque site must be booked before use, and is very popular, particularly within the spring and summer months. You can contact the Thurstaston Visitors Centre by telephone. However, for when the first barbeque site is fully booked up, there is a second area available, located towards the back of the visitors Centre car park. There are no built barbeque spots or benches set up here, but you can place disposable barbecues on the ground. Ask at the visitors centre to be allowed onto this site, and confirm it is available for use at the time you are visiting.

When you have finished your barbeque you should douse your disposable barbeque with water (available from an outside tap at the Visitors Centre building) and leave the barbeque for the rangers to collect at the end of the day. All other waste should go into the bins situated in the barbeque area, with the lids placed firmly back on to prevent danger to the local wildlife.

 

Thurstaston Beach

 

Thurstaston beach is part of the Wirral Coastline and runs between Thurstaston and Heswall along the foot of Thurstaston cliffs. The cliffs themselves provide a fascinating backdrop, being eroded into almost surreal shapes and gravity defying peaks. They are also hazardous in their state of erosion, and should never be walked upon on the edges, or climbed, as parts are susceptible to crumbling away at any moment. This coastal strip is very popular with walkers and forms part of the Wirral Coastal Walk

The tide does come in daily, though it is never deep and never covers the beach entirely so there is no danger of being cut off. A word of caution, the mud flats do have areas of 'sinking sand' and so care should always be taken in wondering out onto them. Never go out too far, especially if alone. This applies also to horse riders, and there have been horses that have had to be pulled out with the assistance of the local fire brigade.

You should never attempt to climb down the cliffs directly to the beach, due to their high state of erosion and the risk of the ground giving away under your step. They are precariously steep and could cause serious injury.

The abandoned railway line was taken under the care of the local council, and under the 1968 Countryside act, was converted into a public footpath with a parallel cycle and bridal path. Numerous tourists and local visitors to the area, walk along the Wirral Way for relaxation, leisure, and excercise. It is used by a variety of people; families out for the day, couples on a romantic stroll, joggers, cyclists, horse riders and more.

At points along the Wirral Way, there will be signposted public paths which will take you various ways through the Heswall fields, either down to the shore line, or up towards Thurstaston village and farm. There is also a footpath signposted to the ominous sounding 'dungeon'. This is a pretty walk through a steep-sided valley with a little stream, and takes you up into farmers fields at the top. gorgous on a sunny summers day. The area is also part of the infamous Wirral Coastal Walk.

Thurstaston Visitors Centre Field

 

There is a large expanse of open grass situated by the Visitors Centre. Visitors are free to do as they please as long as respect is kept for the area's upkeep and wildlife - barbecues must be had within one of the designated areas. The spot is popular with tourists, families and local visitors for picnics, ball games, frisbee, or simply to sit and take in the spectacular view over the Dee Estuary mudflats with, Wales on the distant horizon.

 

There are numerous self-guided walks within this area, including the Wirral Coastal Walk. Excellent views gained by walking along the Thursaston cliffs which over look the beach below. You can in fact walk along the cliff top all the way back to Heswall, with the Heswall Fields to your left. If you feel like it you can follow the footpaths through the fields leading back up to the Wirral Way walk

Thurstaston Visitors Centre Barbeque

 

There are two barbeque sites, the main one being located on the back edge of the open field area, within sight of the Visitors Centre. There is a built in brick barbeque, which you can place a disposable barbeque within. There are also a couple of picnic tables and benches to eat your food at.

This barbeque site must be booked before use, and is very popular, particularly within the spring and summer months. You can contact the Thurstaston Visitors Centre by telephone. However, for when the first barbeque site is fully booked up, there is a second area available, located towards the back of the visitors Centre car park. There are no built barbeque spots or benches set up here, but you can place disposable barbecues on the ground. Ask at the visitors centre to be allowed onto this site, and confirm it is available for use at the time you are visiting.

When you have finished your barbeque you should douse your disposable barbeque with water (available from an outside tap at the Visitors Centre building) and leave the barbeque for the rangers to collect at the end of the day. All other waste should go into the bins situated in the barbeque area, with the lids placed firmly back on to prevent danger to the local wildlife.

Thurstaston Beach

 

Thurstaston beach is part of the Wirral Coastline and runs between Thurstaston and Heswall along the foot of Thurstaston cliffs. The cliffs themselves provide a fascinating backdrop, being eroded into almost surreal shapes and gravity defying peaks. They are also hazardous in their state of erosion, and should never be walked upon on the edges, or climbed, as parts are susceptible to crumbling away at any moment. This coastal strip is very popular with walkers and forms part of the Wirral Coastal Walk

Above all, Thurstaston is renowned for its bird watching opportunities. The land and vegetation within and around the Wirral Country Park is an ideal habitat for many bird species, some unique to the area. The Wirral Way is lined by miles of brambles, hawthorn and blackthorn hedges providing ideal hiding, nesting and food sites for the birds. Added to this are the open mudflats of the River Dee Estuary, (itself an important ecological site of special scientific interest). Thus the Wirral Country Park, and it's surrounding area within Thurstaston and the Wirral, can be regarded as a key bird watching areas within Merseyside and the North West of England, nevermind the UK as a whole.

Thousands of wading birds come to feed and survive within the mud flats, from as far afield as Greenland, Iceland, Scandinavia and the Arctic. Among the many bird species which can be found in the area are; Coots, Curlew, Magpies, Pheasants, Thrushes, Finches, Fieldfares, Redwings, Lapwing, Oystercatchers, Skylarks, Shelduk, Herons, Short-eared Owls, etc.

Wirral Country Park Wildlife

 

Outside the front of Thurstaston Visitors Centre is a large pond which is home to various birds, insects and pond-life, such as frogs, toads, newts and wildfowl. Dragonflies are attracted to the area and will lay eggs in the ponds. In the summer months you till find them darting through the air, along with over 10 different species of butterfly (including, Small Skippers, Speckled Woods and Common Blues). Other insects include Damselflies and Bumblebees.

The local wildlife can contribute to a fun-filled family day out. In the warmer months pond-dipping activities are arranged for children to take part in to learn more about the local environment and Wirral wildlife. You can enquire into and book onto these activities through The Visitors Centre.

 

The beach offers crabs which scuttle across the sand. As a fun tourist attraction, seashore searches are arranged for children and adults to take part in with the rangers. Contact The Visitors Centre for more information.

Other animals found in the area are badgers, foxes, hedgehogs, bats, mice, fieldvole and squirrels.

Flowers and plant-lifeare another key factor in the local Wirral wilflife and thrive in the spring and summer months. Wild flowers, such as Dog violets, Buttercups and Primroses, grow in the fields and bushes along the Wirral Way. Towards the autumn mushrooms, fairy rings and bracket fungi can be found, and 'Fungal forays' can be participated in with the Rangers. This is also an excellent time to walk the footpaths through the fields between Heswall and Thurstaston, as the Wheat is in season and you can see he coastal winds rippling through the sheafs like waves. Therapeutic and beautiful.

Trees to be found in the Wirral Country Park area include; Sycamore, European Maple, Silver Birch, Downy Birch, Horse chestnut, Sweet Chestnut, Douglas Fir, Rowan, Pine, Willow, Holly, Beech, Ash, Elm and Hazel.

Elk of Benezette

 

Elk, also known as Wapiti or Red Deer, enjoy large populations in North America, primarily in western parts of the United States and Canada. These large relatives of deer are also found in smaller populations in other parts of the world, in protected native groups or introduced populations. Their preference for open woodlands and a range of elevations make many states habitable for elk, though their current range is much smaller than their historical range.

Smaller pockets of elk can be found in various Midwestern states, such as South Dakota and Minnesota, and small populations have been established in eastern states including Pennsylvania and Kentucky.

Honfleur is a commune in the Calvados department in Normandy en.normandie-tourisme.fr/normandy-tourism-109-2.html in northwestern France. It is located on the southern bank of the estuary of the Seine across from le Havre and very close to the exit of the Pont de Normandie. Its inhabitants are called Honfleurais. It is especially known for its old, beautiful picturesque port, characterized by its houses with slate-covered frontages, painted many times by artists, including in particular Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Johan Jongkind, forming the école de Honfleur (Honfleur school) which contributed to the appearance of the Impressionist movement. The Sainte-Catherine church, which has a bell tower separate from the principal building, is the largest church made out of wood in France. The first written record of Honfleur is a reference by Richard III, Duke of Normandy, in 1027. By the middle of the 12th century, the city represented a significant transit point for goods from Rouen to England. Located on the estuary of one of the principal rivers of France with a safe harbour and relatively rich hinterland, Honfleur profited from its strategic position from the start of the Hundred Years' War. The town's defences were strengthened by Charles V in order to protect the estuary of the Seine from attacks from the English. This was supported by the nearby port of Harfleur. However, Honfleur was taken and occupied by the English in 1357 and from 1419 to 1450. When under French control, raiding parties often set out from the port to ransack the English coasts, including partially destroying the town of Sandwich, in Kent, England, in the 1450s. At the end of the Hundred Years' War, Honfleur benefited from the boom in maritime trade until the end of the 18th century. Trade was disturbed during the wars of religion in the 16th century. The port saw the departure of a number of explorers, in particular in 1503 of Binot Paulmierde Gonneville to the coasts of Brazil. In 1506, local man Jean Denis departed for Newfoundland island and the mouth of the Saint Lawrence. An expedition in 1608, organised by Samuel de Champlain, founded the city of Quebec in modern day Canada. After 1608, Honfleur thrived on trade with Canada, the West Indies, the African coasts and the Azores. As a result, the town became one of the five principal ports for the slave trade in France. During this time the rapid growth of the town saw the demolition of its fortifications on the orders of Colbert. The wars of the French revolution and the First Empire, and in particular the continental blockade, caused the ruin of Honfleur. It only partially recovered during the 19th century with the trading of wood from northern Europe. Trade was however limited by the silting up of the entrance to the port and development of the modern port at Le Havre. The port however still functions today. Debido a la rotación de la Tierra, las estrellas no se encuentran en puntos fijos en el cielo, sino que producen el efecto de moverse en el cielo. Para poder fotografiar el rastro que las estrellas dejan en el cielo, lo único que teóricamente necesitas es una cámara que puedas fijar al suelo y que realice una exposición por un periodo prolongado de tiempo.

 

Las estrellas generan la sensación de moverse alrededor de los Polos Norte y Sur. Las estrellas que se encuentren más cercanas a un Polo darán la sensación de encontrarse más estáticas, mientras que las que se encuentren más cerca del Ecuador celeste crearán una sensación de movimiento mayor. Este movimiento es de aproximadamente 15 grados por hora, por lo que si quieres una fotografía con arcos de 30 grados deberás fijar un tiempo de exposición de 2 horas.

 

Frente a la fotografía tradicional, los primeros intentos de realizar estas largas exposiciones con cámaras digitales se veían frustrados por un problema muy serio: las exposiciones largas generaban un sobrecalentamiento del sensor que se traducía en la aparición de luz parásita provocada por el mismo calor del sensor.

 

Hubo gente que trabajó en sistemas de refrigeración de la propia cámara, algo que, cuanto menos, da un poco de miedo (o acaso destriparías tu cámara para tratar de dar mayor ventilación a su interior?).

 

La solución a este problema pasa por un procesado posterior de las fotos.

 

En lugar de realizar una única toma de varias horas de duración, se trata de realizar muchas tomas y fusionarlas posteriormente con un buen programa para fotos.

* En las ciudades y focos de población se produce contaminación lumínica, que afectará en mayor o menor medida a la luz que puedas recoger. Lo mejor es alejarse de los centros urbanos para realizar este tipo de fotografías.

* Se necesitará una climatología en la que el cielo esté despejado.

* El proceso puede tardar varias horas, así que piensa en una actividad paralela que puedas realizar mientras haces las fotos. De otro modo, la actividad puede resultar un poco aburrida.

* Para fotografiar estrellas necesitarás aplicar una exposición que vaya desde unos minutos a varias horas. Asegurate de que las baterías de tu cámara están correctamente cargadas para no quedarte sin batería en medio del disparo.

* Necesitarás un trípode bien firme, ya que cualquier movimiento por viento u otro factor afectará al resultado final.

 

Para conseguir un un efecto curvilineo, apunta a cualquier parte del cielo.

 

Si lo que deseas es conseguir una foto en la que las estrellas tracen círculos alrededor de un punto, centra ese punto en la Estrella Polar o en la Cruz del Sur, según en el Hemisferio en el que estés.

Description: One of the few antelope which exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism, the genders in the blackbuck are readily distinguishable. Both sexes have white underparts, including the insides of the legs and lower chest, as well as a white ring surrounding the eye and a white chin. Females and young are yellowish-fawn on their back and head, and are generally hornless. Males gradually darken from tan to deep brown or black with age, beginning after 2 years. The build is slender, and the tail short. The horns, found only in males and appearing before their pronounced colour change, are twisted in a tight spiral with up to five turns. Ridged laterally, they may grow 35-73 cm / 14-29 inches.

 

Reproduction: Gestation Period: 5-6 months. Young per Birth: 1 Although breeding can occur throughout the year, there are peak periods in March-May and August-October. Weaning: 5-6 months. Sexual Maturity: 1.5-2 years. Life span: 10-12 years, rarely up to 18.

 

Social Behavior: During the cooler seasons, blackbuck are diurnal, and active intermittently throughout the hours of daylight. As the temperature rises, however, they are more often seen grazing in the open in the early morning and late afternoon, sheltering from the sun for the rest of the day. When a potential threat is spotted, the alert females are usually first to sound the alarm, with one individual leaping into the air. This motion is followed by the entire herd, although after a few large bounds the herd reduces its pace to a normal gallop. One of the fastest land mammals, blackbuck have been clocked going in excess of 80 kmph / 48 mph.. During the breeding season males become territorial, defending an area usually ranging in size from 1 to 17 hectares from rival males, and attempting to keep the largest group of females within it for the longest period of time. This territoriality can last anywhere from two weeks to eight months. Mixed herds with 5-50 animals, generally with three or fewer males. Bachelor herds are known. Dominance among males within a herd is achieved primarily with posturing and threatening gestures: fights with the sharp horns are rare.

Habitat and Distribution:

 

Blackbucks are native to India and Pakistan, where they were widespread in plains and open woodlands; western deserts, and northern mountains limited their distribution. Today, extensive hunting and habitat destruction have restricted blackbuck to only small, isolated populations in their former native habitat.

In Pakistan the blackbuck lives in semi-desert areas, such as Cholistan and Thar. Today the blackbuck is an ocassional staggler along the eastern desert border areas of the country. There is no permant resident population today in Pakistan. During the late 1970's and early 80's small populations of blackbuck were brought from Texas, U.S.A to start a reintroduction program in Pakistan. These projects have had some success and now there are small captive populations of blackbuck in 3-4 locations, particularly in Kirthar and lal Sohanra National Parks. The breeding success achieve at Lal Sohanra is 413 animals (Dr. A.Aleem,1998) where as from Khar time to time number of Black Bucks provided to the eminent conservationists for further propagation in their private reserve. At present about 500 animals are surviving in Mir of Khairpurs Mehrano reserve, 110 at Khangur, Ghotki and 70 at New Jatoi, Nawab Shah. However at Khar Center only 35 animals (R.A.Rajput 1999) remain. Except these, some are kept in different zoo's, wildlife centres and in possession of individuals. At present all together about 1500 Black Bucks are reared in captivity and they are surviving in Punjab and Sindh regions of Pakistan. These will be released in the wild in the near future.

Portland Bill

History

 

Portland Bill and Chesil Beach are the graveyards of many vessels that failed to reach Weymouth or Portland Roads. The Portland Race is caused by the meeting of the tides between the Bill and the Shambles sandbank about 3 miles SE. Strong currents break the sea so fiercely that from the shore a continuous disturbance can be seen. Portland Bill Lighthouse guides vessels heading for Portland and Weymouth through these hazardous waters as well as acting as a waymark for ships navigating the English Channel. The Shambles sandbank is marked by a red sector light.

 

As early as 1669 Sir John Clayton was granted a patent to erect a lighthouse, but his scheme fell through and it was not until early in the eighteenth century that Captain William Holman, supported by the shipowners and Corporation of Weymouth, put a petition to Trinity House for the building of a lighthouse at Portland Bill. Trinity House opposed it suggesting that lights at this point were needless and shipowners could not bear the burden of their upkeep. The people of Weymouth continued their petition and on 26th May, 1716 Trinity House obtained a patent from George I. They in turn issued a lease for 61 years to a private consortium who built two lighthouses with enclosed lanterns and coal fires. The lights were badly kept, sometimes not lit at all, and in 1752 an inspection was made by two members of the Board of Trinity House who approached by sea to find "it was nigh two hours after sunset before any light appeared in either of the lighthouses". With the termination of the lease the lights reverted to Trinity House. In 1789 William Johns, a builder of Weymouth under contract to Trinity House, took down one of the towers and erected a new one at a cost of £2,000. It was sited so that it served as a mark by day or night to direct ships moving up and down Channel or into Portland Roads clear of the Race and Shambles. Over the doorway on a marble tablet was the following inscription:-

In August 1788 Argand lamps were installed, Portland being the first lighthouse in England to be fitted with them. In the upper or old house there were two rows, seven in each row, lighted with oil and furnished with highly-polished reflectors. Low light tests were made by Thomas Rogers with his new lens light, and six Argand lamps were installed, their lights increased by lenses.

 

In 1798, when Napoleon threatened invasion, two 18lb cannons were installed at the lighthouse.

 

A 7 metre tall white stone obelisk was built in 1844 at the Southern tip of Portland Bill as a warning of a low shelf of rock extending 30 metres South into the sea, which still stands near the current lighthouse.

 

New high and low lighthouses were built in 1869, but early last century Trinity House announced its intention of replacing them with a single tower - the present lighthouse. The old towers can still be seen from the outside - the low light, which is now a bird observatory and field centre, has retained its original appearance but the high light lantern has been removed.

 

The present optic at Portland Bill is very unusual as due to the arrangement of the panels the character gradually changes from one flash to four flashes between the bearings 221°and 224° and from four flashes to one flash between bearings 117° and 141°.

 

Portland Bill Lighthouse was demanned on 18th March 1996 when monitoring and control of the station was transferred to the Trinity House Operations & Planning Centre at Harwich.

Portland Bill Lighthouse is located on the Southerly tip of the Isle of Portland, 1.2 miles south of the village of Easton.

Visitor Centre

 

For nearly 300 years a lighthouse has stood on Portland Bill to guide vessels heading for Portland and Weymouth and acting as a waymark for vessels navigating in the English Channel. A red sector light warns mariners of the hazardous Shambles Bank lying three miles offshore.

 

The ‘Lighthouse Visitor centre’ at Portland Bill is owned and operated independently from the actual tower lighthouse therefore there are occasions that the tower lighthouse would be closed to the public, whereas the ‘Lighthouse Visitor Centre’ would remain open. Further details on the 'Lighthouse Visitor Centre' opening times can be found here.

 

Tours of Portland Bill Lighthouse are organised by The Crown Estate under licence from the Corporation of Trinity House.

"This sculpture is meant to evoke the power of the Brisbane River sweeping around this curve at new Farm, triggering memories of the massive floods of 1893 and 1974, and anxieties about the next. The word flood appears in thick solid letters, styled in a san serif font, with only the top third showing, like a headline literally going under. The title Watermark means both a mark showing the height to which water has risen, and a design impressed into paper which is visible when held to the light, guaranteeing authenticity.Giving weight to words, and seeing letters as sculptural forms, mirrors the ways we make thought concrete. Our words become shapes which reflect the energies we speak, and the ideas and passions which they contain."

"When I was commissioned to make Watermark in 2000, I was told that there would never be another flood in Brisbane, thanks to the Wivenhoe Dam. Unfortunately history repeated in January 2011, and remarkably the sculpture became the literal watermark showing the final height of the flood a couple of centimeters above its ground level.

 

Each letter is self-contained, made of plate steel which has been welded into an airtight form to prevent internal rust.

 

My advice to public sculptors is to stay closely involved in every stage and watch every detail of manufacture. Without my permission the sculpture was set 5cm into the cement, with a small angled lip on its edges. If I'd been made aware of this, I would have made each letter 5cm higher to compensate. The maximum letter height of 180cm on the 'F' makes the sculpture a tempting climb for children - high enough to be interesting, but not so high that parents having coffee at the nearby cafe are worried.

 

Watermark has a fifty year contract, whereby the sculptor guarantees a sufficiently robust technical build and Brisbane City Council guarantees care and maintenance. I am glad that the sculpture has become an integral part of its public domain and feels like it belongs to the city."

 

Preparing for our Cheap Shots photo exhibit opening this Friday, I realized I'd never posted a description of the Brownie Hawkeye mod which I used to take all the photos I submitted to the show.

 

These cameras have a piece of flat glass as a protective cover on the outside; but the image is really formed by the lens behind the shutter. To reach that lens, you look inside the film gate, and unscrew the two phillips-head screws flanking the lens. The whole funnel-shaped film gate will come off as a unit. The lens is held in a recess at the front of this.

 

It may seem non-intuitive, but the original orientation is to have the concave side facing the front. The modification is to turn it around so the bulge outwards faces the front. Don't lose the ring of springy metal, it goes between the lens and the front of the camera. (This photo shows a 1960 BHF with a one-piece molded plastic lens. Earlier models will look a little different, but the idea is the same.)

 

After putting the camera back together, the distance of sharpest focus will be much closer (for mine it is about 2 feet, for some it's more like 5).

 

The reason to do this is to get photos that are fairly sharp in the center, but whose corners dissolve into a dreamlike blur. Since these BHFs are pretty easy to come by, it's a nice technique to experiement with if you haven't been lucky enough to find an affordable Diana...

Πόσα μπορεί να προσδοκά ένας άνθρωπος αυτής της ηλικίας από το μέλλον και τι προοπτικές έχει; Ποια πενηντάχρονη γυναίκα ονειρεύεται ακόμα τον πρίγκιπα του παραμυθιού; Ποιος πενηντάρης αναζητά ακόμα τη Χιονάτη του; Ποια γυναίκα μέσης ηλικίας εξακολουθεί να ελπίζει πως θα μεταμορφωθεί από ασχημόπαπο σε κύκνο; Οι μεγαλύτεροι σε ηλικία άνθρωποι έχουν την ίδια επαγγελματική θέληση με τους νεότερους ανθρώπους; Εν ολίγοις, είτε κάποιος είναι άντρας, είτε γυναίκα, κάθε άνθρωπος που φτάνει σ’ αυτήν την ηλικία είναι πιθανόν πως διατηρεί μια σχετικά ορθολογική και πρακτική στάση προς τον γάμο, την οικογένεια και τα παιδιά. Σε έναν τέτοιο άνθρωπο, ουσιαστικά δεν μένουν άλλες επιλογές, καμία παρόρμηση να προκαλέσει τη μοίρα. Όσον αφορά την ανθρώπινη εμπειρία, μόλις κάποιος φτάσει σ’ αυτήν την ηλικία, αναπτύσσει εκ φύσεως αυτήν τη στάση: «Πρέπει κανείς να δέχεται τη μοίρα του· τα παιδιά του καθενός έχουν το δικό τους πεπρωμένο· η ανθρώπινη μοίρα ορίζεται από τον Ουρανό». I wrote a Greasemonkey script called "Flickr Multi Group Sender", that lets you send your flickr photos to multiple groups at once.

 

If you tick the checkbox titled "Save this group selection" the groups you have selected will be saved, and you will be able to quickly reselect them again the next time you use the script, using the secondary select box.

 

*UPDATE* 25-04-2008 Ive updated the script, fixing a few bugs, reinstall the script to get it working again. Also added a function that automatically saves your selection each time, even if you dont check the box. This lets you easily reselect your previous selection, in case you forgot to check the box.

 

*UPDATED* 28/5/2008 The script now works on all international versions of the site. New features include, group counter which displays how many groups you have selected, and groups that the image are already in appear faded out in the select box, and you cannot select them. Script also now works for sending videos to groups.

 

*UPDATED* 7/6/2008 I added a search box at the top, that lets you search your group list, to let you find matching groups quickly.

 

*UPDATED* 14/7/2010 Ive updated the script for the new photo page, remember this script is donationware, if you like it make a donation, cheers. Script is now compatible with Firefox, Chrome Safari and Opera.

 

TIP: Another way to find a group quickly, is to click inside the select box once with the mouse, then type the first few letters of the group name, the selector should automatically jump to the group you are looking for.

Connected to Titian's late portraits is the Allegory of Time governed by Prudence. This is an exceptional portrait which depicts the aged Titian on the left above a wolf's head, his son Orazio in the centre above the head of a lion, and his nephew Marco above a dog's head. The wolf, the lion and the dog, symbolize the past, present and future. In the upper part of the painting there is an inscription which is the key to the complex allegorical meaning of the work: "EX PRAETERITO PRAESENS PRUDENTER AGIT, NI FUTURUM ACTIONE DETURPET" ("From the (experience of the) past, the present acts prudently, lest it spoil future action").

 

Though it was common enough during the Renaissance to use three human heads to symbolize the ages of man, and to use three animal heads to symbolize prudence, it was very unusual to use them as the theme of a painting. As Titian used personal motifs, it can be assumed that he chose the subject matter himself.

The Allegory of Prudence (c. 1550–1565) is an oil-on-canvas painting attributed to the Italian artist Titian and his assistants. The painting portrays three human heads, each facing in a different direction, above three animal heads (from left to right, a wolf, a lion and a dog). It is in the National Gallery, London.[1]

 

The painting is usually interpreted as operating on a number of levels.[2][3] At the first level, the different ages of the three human heads represent the three ages of man (from left to right: old age, maturity and youth), a subject that Titian had depicted 50 years earlier in his The Three Ages of Man. The different directions in which they are facing reflect a second, wider concept of time itself as having a past, present and future. This theme is repeated in the animal heads: an animal with three heads (wolf, lion, dog) to represent the passage of time (past, present, future) is associated with Serapis in Macrobius's Saturnalia, and associated with Apollo by Petrarch, and the iconography is repeated for example in the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili of Francesco Colonna (1499), the Hieroglyphica of Pierio Valeriano (1556), and the Iconologia of Cesare Ripa (1643). The third level, from which the painting has acquired its present name, is suggested by a barely visible inscription above the portraits: EX PRÆTE/RITO // PRÆSENS PRVDEN/TER AGIT // NI FVTVRA / ACTIONĒ DE/TVRPET (Latin for "from the experience of the past, the present acts prudently, lest it spoil future actions".)

 

It has been argued that the human faces are actual portraits of the aged Titian, his son Orazio, and his young nephew, Marco Vecellio, who, like Orazio, lived and worked with Titian.[4] Erwin Panofsky, in his classic exposition, suggests that the painting is specifically associated with the negotiations associated with the passing on of Titian's property to the younger generations, in the light of his approaching death. The painting therefore acts as a visual counsel to the three generations to act prudently in the administration of the inheritance. Nicholas Penny is, however, highly sceptical of this, and points out discrepancies between the human heads and other evidence of the individuals' appearance. He doubts it was a personal project of any sort and feels that is "surely more likely that the painting was commissioned".[5] Others are also of the opinion that the three heads are not Titian and his family. One reason is that there are no portraits of Orazio or Marco, so confirmation that they are the figures is difficult.[6]

 

More recently the painting has been explained in quite different ways. Instead of an allegory of prudence, it has been seen as an allegory about sin and penitence. On this view, it amounts to an admission by Titian that his failure to act prudently in his youth and middle age has condemned him to lead a regretful old age.[7]

 

At the other extreme, the painting has been explained as asserting that the prudence which comes with experience and old age is an essential aspect of artistic discrimination and judgement. On this interpretation, the painting therefore acts as a rebuttal of the view that old age is the enemy of artistic achievement. On a more general level, the painting's depiction of Titian with his assistants Orazio and Marco is also intended as a defence of the prudence of the continuity of the Venetian workshop tradition.[8]

Latvian Academy of Sciences

 

The Academy of Sciences edifice was built after World War II, between 1951 and 1961.The spire was originally decorated with a wreath and a five pointed star, which was removed after Latvia regained independence in 1991. Being 108 metres (354 ft) tall, it was the first skyscraper in the republic.

 

The Academy of Sciences is one of the most notable examples of the so-called Socialist Realism in Latvia. The building was originally meant to become the Kolkhoz Workers’ Building, or a hotel and dormitory for collective farm workers who come to Riga – but it was never used for the purpose. Riga residents used to call the buildings “Stalin’s birthday cake”

Introduction to Cemlyn

  

Cemlyn is one of North Wales Wildlife Trust’s star reserves and regarded by the Anglesey County Council as the “jewel in the crown” of its Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

It is valued both for its scenic qualities and its unique range of wildlife, and is as popular with general visitors – local people, holidaymakers, walkers etc. as it is with birdwatchers and naturalists.

 

Situated on the North coast of Anglesey, about three miles West of Cemaes, the reserve land, which is owned by the National Trust and has been leased by NWWT since 1971, includes a large lagoon, separated from the sea by a spectacular, naturally-created shingle ridge.

 

The ridge, known as Esgair Gemlyn, is formed by the process of longshore drift, its profile changing with the action of tide and weather. This unique geographical feature also provides a habitat for interesting coastal plants such as Sea Kale, Sea Campion, and Yellow Horned Poppy.

 

In the summer, the lagoon is the backdrop for Cemlyn’s most famous wildlife spectacle. Clustered on islands in the brackish water is a large and internationally important seabird colony, including breeding Common and Arctic Terns, and one of the U.K.’s largest nesting populations of Sandwich Terns. From the vantage point of the tern viewing area on the ridge, visitors experience these rare and elegant birds close-up – chasing and diving in courtship displays; incubating eggs; preening and bathing in the lagoon, or calling to their hungry chicks as they come winging in with freshly-caught fish.

 

Around the reserve there are also areas of coastal grassland, farmland, scrub, wetland, and both rocky and sandy shore encircling Cemlyn Bay. These are home to a wealth of life - birds, mammals, insects, wildflowers and marine creatures which, together with the tern colony, make up a fascinating ecosystem: an ideal ‘outdoor classroom’ for studying biodiversity.

In addition to being a Wildlife Trust reserve, Cemlyn is a Special Protection Area, a candidate Special Area of Conservation, and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is also part of the Anglesey Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

History of the reserve

  

Much of Cemlyn’s history as a wildlife site is tied to the story of Captain Vivian Hewitt, who came to the area in the 1930s, settling in Bryn Aber, the large house that dominates the western end of the reserve, and buying up much of the surrounding land.

A wealthy eccentric, his interest in birds led him to construct the first dam and weir at Cemlyn, replacing tidal saltmarsh with a large and permanent lagoon which he intended as a refuge for wildfowl. He also had a scheme to nurture an area of woodland within the grounds of Bryn Aber, to attract smaller birds. To this end he began construction of an imposing double wall, which was intended both as a wind-brake for the trees, and a means for observing the birds – the gap between the two walls had viewing holes. A further plan to top the walls with polished stone was never completed, and after Captain Hewitt’s death the house was left to his housekeeper’s family, but the walls themselves remain, and lend the site its mysterious, even foreboding presence.

It is the legacy of the lagoon that has had most significance for wildlife however. The change from a tidal habitat that frequently dried out in summer, to a stable body of water encompassing small islands, has provided the terns with nesting sites that are less attractive to ground predators. Over the following decades, various changes have occurred to the lagoon – some natural, eg. storms breaking over and swamping – some man-made, eg. the reconstruction of the weir and the creation or removal of islands. The water level and salinity of the lagoon is now monitored to maintain the ideal habitat for terns and other wildlife.

A couple of years after Captain Hewitt died, the Cemlyn estate was bought by the National Trust. Since 1971, they have leased the land around the lagoon to the North Wales Wildlife Trust, who manage it as a nature reserve. The two organisations work in partnership to enhance and maintain the site for wildlife and the public.

The reserve has had a warden every summer since 1981, with two wardens being employed every season since 1997. With the help of numerous volunteers, their work has included the detailed monitoring of the tern’s breeding success, protection of the colonies from a variety of natural predators (and in a couple of cases from the unwanted attentions of egg-collectors), as well as recording other forms of wildlife, and providing information to the public. Their presence on the ridge and around the reserve helps maintain the profile of Cemlyn as an important and nationally valuable site.

Terns

  

Three species of tern breed regularly at Cemlyn. The numbers of Sandwich Tern nesting on the islands in the lagoon have been going up in recent years, making the colony one of the largest in the country.

There were over 1000 nests in 2005, and a good percentage of chicks fledged. The Sandwich Terns generally nest in dense groups, and seem to benefit from being close to groups of nesting Black-headed Gulls, which react aggressively to the threat of a predator, while the Sandwich Terns sit tight. Common Terns nest in sparser groups and smaller numbers on the islands, as do the very similar Arctic Terns, which make an epic journey from the southern to the northern hemisphere and back every year - the longest migration of any bird.

One of Britain's rarest seabirds, the Roseate Tern was a former breeder at Cemlyn, and is still sometimes seen on passage, as are other rarities like Little Tern and Black Tern. A vagrant Sooty Tern caused great excitement when it visited the colony in the summer of 2005.

 

The tern colony is the main focus of conservation work at Cemlyn. Because of disturbance at their traditional breeding areas, due to increased coastal access and development, terns have declined historically in Britain, so sites like Cemlyn, which still hold healthy populations, are a precious and nationally importance resource.

 

Two wardens are employed by NWWT every summer, to monitor and protect the terns. As well as dealing with disturbance and predation, they record the numbers of nests, the fledging success of chicks, and also the kinds of fish being brought in by their parents. Feeding studies are important because availability of fish, especially the terns ideal food, Sandeels, can be the key factor in a successful breeding season. The combined results of warming seas and commercial overfishing of Sandeels around Shetland for example, have had a disastrous effect on the productivity of Arctic Terns there.

 

All terns are migratory. Sandwich Terns are usually the first to be seen, in late March and April, with the bulk of breeding adults of all species arriving on site in May. June and July are the busiest months for the terns, and a good time to visit the reserve, the lagoon islands becoming a hive of activity.

By mid-August, the majority of chicks should have fledged, and be ready to join their parents on the journey south to their wintering areas - the coast of West Africa in the case of most Common and Sandwich Terns, even further south for Arctics.

Other Birds

  

Oystercatcher and Ringed Plover both breed on the reserve, making their nests in the shingle of the Esgair.

In such an exposed choice of site, both species rely on wonderful camouflage of eggs and chick. In response to a direct perceived threat however, adult Ringed Plovers may resort to the 'broken wing trick' - drawing the attention of a potential predator by feigning injury and leading it away from the nest. To protect these waders, as well as the tern colony, visitors are asked to avoid walking on the lagoon-side of the Esgair during the summer months.

 

Cemlyn's situation and range of habitats make it a haven for a range of birds at all times of the year. Coot, Little Grebe and Shelduck can usually be seen around the lagoon, and Stonechats are a regular feature of the surrounding areas of scrub.

A variety of waders such as Curlew, Dunlin, Golden Plover, and Redshank use the area, and Purple Sandpiper may be seen on the rocky shoreline.

Summer visitors to look out for include Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler, while Wigeon, Teal, Red-breasted Meganser and other widfowl may be present in significant numbers in Autumn and Winter.

Other migrants turn up from time to time, and over the years a variety of rarities have been spotted –

2005 sightings included, apart from the Sooty Tern, an American Golden Plover, a Terek Sandpiper and a Melodious Warbler. Any keen birdwatcher will want to scour the site for something unusual.

Other animals

  

Grey Seals can often be seen in the sea around Cemlyn, or hauled up on Craig yr Iwrch, the rocky island just off the Trwyn, and Harbour Porpoise sometimes feed close to the western end of Cemlyn Bay.

 

Brown Hares can be seen in or around the reserve, occasionally crossing the Esgair at dawn or dusk.

 

Weasels and Stoats both hunt the hedgerows and grassland at Cemlyn, and during the summer, basking Adders and Common Lizards may be spotted.

 

There’s also a wide range of insect life – butterflies, such as Grayling, Wall Brown and Common Blue, and day-flying moths like the Six-spot Burnet can all be seen, as can various beetles, grasshoppers and dragonflies.

Underwater Life

  

The coastline of Cemlyn includes areas of shingle, sand and exposed rocky shore. These provide habitats for a variety of marine life including sea-anemones, crabs, prawns, blennies, butterfish, winkles, whelks, limpets, coastal lichens and a range of seaweeds. e.g. kelp.

 

The lagoon, with its changing mixture of fresh and salt water is a challenging environment, but Grey Mullet and Eels thrive in the brackish conditions. In fact Cemlyn is one of the top sites for specialised saline lagoon wildlife including shrimps and molluscs, and waterplants like Tassel Pondweed.

Plantlife

  

The shingle of the Esgair is one of the harshest habitats imaginable for plants – arid because of the quick-draining pebbles, and exposed to wind, salt-spray, and the ravages of winter storms. Nevertheless it provides a home to specialists like the rare Sea Kale, whose deep roots and fleshy leaves enable it to survive close to the tide-line, and whose profuse white flowers give off a strong sweet smell.

Other characteristic coastal plants to look for along the ridge include Sea Campion, Sea Beet, and the striking Yellow Horned Poppy. Stands of Sea Purslane and Glasswort (Sea Asparagus) can be found at low tide close to the car park at Bryn Aber.

The grassland around Cemlyn is rich in wildflowers; an early spread of colour is provided by Spring Squill and Thrift which punctuate the grass with blues and pinks, while later blooming flowers along the Trwyn include Tormentil, Yellow Rattle, Knapweed and Centaury.

Cemlyn through the Seasons

  

Spring

 

Early signs of Spring may include the first Wheatears arriving on Trwyn Cemlyn, the first Manx Shearwaters weaving through the waves out to sea, or the first Sandwich Tern’s call in the Bay - these are all possible from March onwards. Later on, Spring colour on the grassland around the reserve is provided by Spring Squill and Thrift which stud the ground with blues and pinks, and the first sunny spells may tempt out Common Lizards or Adders to bask. By mid-May, a range of birdlife is becoming visible and audible around the reserve, including terns settling on the islands in the lagoon, Whitethroat and Sedge Warbler singing in the scrub and water-margins, Whimbrel foraging along the rocky shore, and other waders like Dunlin and Black-tailed Godwit on the beach or in the lagoon.

 

Summer

 

Summer sees activity on the lagoon islands reach fever pitch with the terns and Black-headed Gulls using every hour of daylight to bring food to fast-growing chicks. The sight, sound and smell of this bustling seabird metropolis make up a memorable Cemlyn experience. June and July is the time to see the stands of Sea Kale in full flower, and to spot Yellow Horned Poppy and Sea Campion along the Esgair - Oystercatcher and Ringed Plover are also nesting on the shingle during this period. On the Trwyn, look out for Tormentil and the deep pink flowers of Centaury, as well as the passing colours of butterflies like Small Heath and Common Blue.

Also look out for the red and green leaf-beetle Chrysolina polita on the Dwarf Willow along Trwyn Pencarreg.

  

Autumn

 

The tern chicks are usually fledged by mid-August, ready to start the long migration south to their wintering grounds on the coast of Africa, so by early Autumn, the islands seem strangely peaceful. Other wildlife moves in however – flocks of Golden Plover, along with other waders like Lapwing and Curlew can be seen. Big Autumn tides can uncover interesting marine life that usually remains hidden on the lower reaches of the shore, and rough weather at this time brings a range of seabirds passing close to Trwyn Cemlyn – Manx Shearwaters, Gannets, Kittiwakes and Guillemots.

 

Winter

 

The lagoon remains an important resource for birds throughout the Winter months – Little Grebe, Shoveler, and Shelduck can regularly be seen, along with the Coot and Wigeon that also graze on the surrounding fields. The Herons that fish the lagoon at Cemlyn through the year are sometimes joined by a Little Egret darting in the shallows for shrimps. Red-breasted Merganser and Great Crested Grebe can often be spotted either in the lagoon or out in the Bay, while on the rocky shore, a keen eye may pick out a Turnstone or Purple Sandpiper foraging close to the water’s edge.

Education & Outreach

  

The aim of the project is to raise awareness in local children about the importance of biodiversity and conservation by enabling them to explore the array of unique wildlife habitats on their local doorstep.

 

The project is designed to link in with National Curriculum topics covered in subjects including Science, Geography, History, English & RE, and provide a basis for ongoing work in the classroom. These different topics are often linked in with general environmental themes, in a conscious effort to encourage pupils to think about their relationship to their surroundings.

 

The activities include carrying out habitat surveys, where pupils record different species along a line of samples (as in an ecological transect), investigating the wildlife of the lagoon and shore using nets, and observing the tern colony through binoculars. Art-based exercises focus on perception of surroundings through the senses and encourage pupils to explore, using materials found on the beach to create their own 3D designs.

 

In some cases, the People and Wildlife Officers can visit schools to give illustrated talks and initiate written or interactive exercises in the classroom.

  

Outreach

 

The Coastal Nature Reserves project also involves general education, awareness-raising and outreach to the local community. Activities have been organised both on and off the reserve - there was a Cemlyn Creature Count in June 2010, and guided walks have also been arranged for the general public as well as for youth clubs and a daycentre group for people with learning difficulties. The project has been represented in The Anglesey Show and the Wylfa Community Fun Day. Illustrated talks have also been carried out for groups such as the Urdd, Scouts and for two branches of the University of the 3rd Age.

 

The People and Wildlife team aim to extend the range of this work, and are very keen to hear from any organisations or community groups interested in either on or off-site activities.

How to get involved

  

Anglesey’s coastline is famous for its stunning scenery and the fantastic array of wildlife it holds. North Wales Wildlife Trust has a number of ways you can get involved in helping to protect this resource and raise awareness about its importance. The emphasis is very much on getting people involved, interacting with and enjoying their local naturalheritage.

 

As a volunteer with the Coastal Nature Reserve Project, opportunities will vary depending on the reserve and time of year. There’s a rough guide (by location) to the possibilities below.

Cemlyn Nature Reserve

The season will commence with a volunteer open day in March. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet the rest of the Cemlyn team, learn more about the work, the reserve and the wildlife you may encounter, with a guided walk and volunteer fact sheets also provided.

Visiting the reserve

  

Cemlyn is sign-posted from Tregele on the A5025 between Valley and Amlwch. Although the roads to the site are narrow, there are two car parks adjacent to the reserve (OS 1:50, 000 Sheet 114 and Explorer 262. Grid ref. SH329936 & SH336932).

 

The reserve is open throughout the year: admission is free.

Suggested walks around Cemlyn

  

These are a few popular routes around the reserve, focussing mainly on wildlife and landscape features.

  

Esgair Gemlyn

 

The shingle ridge at Cemlyn is accessible from the Beach car park at the eastern end of the reserve.

Although the distance along the ridge to the tern viewing area opposite the islands is only about 0.5 km, it's worth bearing in mind that during the summer months, visitors are asked to use only the seaward side of the ridge, and the shingle can make for arduous walking.

It’s a much shorter walk from the Bryn Aber car park on the western side of the lagoon, but beware – the causeway linking the car park and the ridge can flood an hour or more either side of high tide, so it’s worth checking the times to avoid getting stranded.

During the summer, daily tide-times may be chalked up close to the causeway by the wardens.

Outside of the tern breeding season, the lagoon-side of the ridge is open to the public, and its interesting habitat can be explored at closer range.

  

Trwyn Cemlyn

 

This little peninsula (Trwyn is Welsh for nose) makes a favourite short walk for local people. Accessible via the Bryn Aber car park, it comprises coastal grassland with small patches of gorse and heather, and a rocky shoreline allowing views out to The Skerries in the west, Wylfa to the east, and if there’s good visibility, sometimes the Isle of Man to the north.

It’s a good spot for spring wildflowers, and also for seeing seabirds, seals, and sometimes porpoises.

It also links up with the National Trust coastal footpath to the west.

  

Lagoon inlet

  

The narrow bridge at the western end of the lagoon, just before Bryn Aber, makes a good vantage point for the lagoon islands if the ridge is inaccessible. It also allows views over the freshwater inlet and the adjacent area of gorse and scrub known as Morfa. The road alongside the inlet that leads to the farm of Tyn Llan has no parking, but a walk down gives views of the reedy inlet margins and surrounding damp pasture, which sometimes harbour interesting birdlife.

  

Coastal footpath towards Hen Borth

 

.Cemlyn forms the eastern end of a stretch of wonderful coastal footpath, taking in rugged landscape characteristic of the north Anglesey coast.

From the stile at the ‘brow’ of Trwyn Cemlyn, the path leads off the reserve up past Craig yr Iwrch, an outlying rock favoured by seals, cormorants and roosting curlews, and along the cliffs, passing Tyn Llan farm on the left, to the bay of Hen Borth.

Keen walkers may wish to carry on following the coastline as far as Carmel Head or Ynys y Fydlyn, while others may wish to visit the small church of St Rhwydrus, returning through the gate by the farm and back past the lagoon inlet.

  

Coast towards Wylfa Head

 

Trwyn Pencarreg - the area of rocky outcrops, grassland and coastal heath to the east of the Beach car park at Cemlyn, is interesting for its plant communities, wildflowers and insects, and for its impressive views back across Cemlyn Bay. A circular walk is possible via the old mill at Felin Gafnan.

The National Trust has produced a booklet detailing several circular walks around, or starting from Cemlyn. It includes illustrated routes for all of the areas described above, and of walks that take you further afield.
