Auspicious Elephants at Shun Hing Street
In traditional Chinese culture, the elephant is a symbol of good fortune and affluence. The pronunciation of ‘elephant’ (xiàng) is similar to that of ‘auspiciousness’(xiáng), plus the way elephants draw water using their trunks also represents drawing in wealth. At the entrance to the open area of the public housing on Shun Hing Street (facing the Chung Ying Street police post), stands a striking pavilion with red pillars and a green tiled roof. It’s adorned with small golden tiles on the edges, and at the top, two lifelike dragons are guarding a pearl that represents Sha Tau Kok. In the front, there is a pair of elaborately sculpted elephants. Rumour has it that they were set up by a feng shui master to help residents of Sha Tau Kok to draw wealth and fortune from the natural treasure trove of Starling Inlet (water symbolises wealth in Chinese culture). You may touch the elephants for good luck — touch the one with its trunk raised first to bring wealth and fortune, then the one with its trunk lowered to safeguard them. Remember to follow the correct order!

Τα πουλιά, τα ζώα και τα έντομα ζουν ανάμεσα σε διάφορα φυτά, τα ψάρια ζουν στο νερό και τα φυτά φυτρώνουν στη γη. Τι περιλαμβάνει η ξηρά; Διάφορες περιοχές όπως βουνά, πεδιάδες και λόφους. Επομένως, από τη στιγμή που τα πουλιά και τα ζώα έχουν τον δικό τους χώρο, δεν θα περιπλανώνται οπουδήποτε. Ο χώρος τους είναι τα δάση και τα βουνά.... »

Desierto y oasis en el sur de Gran Canaria
Las Dunas de Maspalomas es un espacio natural único en las Islas Canarias por su belleza y la variedad de ecosistemas que alberga. Protegido por el Gobierno de Canarias como reserva natural especial, sus 400 hectáreas engloban una excelente playa, un campo de dunas vivas de arena orgánica, un bosque de palmeras y una laguna salobre. Esta mezcla de desierto y oasis se encuentra en la costa del extremo sur de Gran Canaria y está rodeada de los afamados establecimientos hoteleros del gran núcleo turístico de Maspalomas.
Qué hacer en las Dunas de Maspalomas
Para conocer mejor este paraje natural, conviene visitar su centro de información y el mirador, ambos ubicados en el Hotel Riu Palace, en el sector nordeste de Maspalomas conocido como Playa del Inglés. Desde allí sale un sendero cuyo ramal número 3 atraviesa los distintos tipos de dunas de la reserva y llega hasta la extensa y soleada playa de Maspalomas. Desde allí se puede ir a observar la abundante vida salvaje de la Charca y disfrutar de la refrescante sombra del Palmeral.

Παντοδύναμου Θεού λέει: «Ας δούμε τι λέει το πρώτο χωρίο: “Και είπεν ο Θεός, Γενηθήτω φώς· και έγεινε φώς· και είδεν ο Θεός το φως ότι ήτο καλόν· και διεχώρισεν ο Θεός το φως από του σκότους· και εκάλεσεν ο Θεός το φως, Ημέραν· το δε σκότος εκάλεσε, Νύκτα. Και έγεινεν εσπέρα και έγεινε πρωΐ, ημέρα πρώτη” (Γέν. 1:3-5). Το χωρίο αυτό περιγράφει την πρώτη πράξη του Θεού στην αρχή της δημιουργίας και την πρώτη μέρα του Θεού στην οποία υπήρχε ένα απόγευμα και ένα πρωί. Αλλά ήταν μια εξαιρετική μέρα: ο Θεός άρχισε να ετοιμάζει το φως για όλα τα πράγματα και, επιπλέον, διαχώρισε το φως από το σκοτάδι. Εκείνη τη μέρα, ο Θεός άρχισε να μιλά και ο λόγος Του με τη εξουσία Του ήταν πλάι–πλάι. Η εξουσία Του άρχισε να ξεχωρίζει από όλα τα πράγματα και η δύναμή Του εξαπλώθηκε σε όλα τα πράγματα σαν αποτέλεσμα του λόγου Του. Από αυτή τη μέρα και μετά, δημιουργήθηκαν όλα τα πράγματα και κράτησαν γερά χάρη στον λόγο του Θεού, στην εξουσία του Θεού και στη δύναμη του Θεού και άρχισαν να λειτουργούν χάρη στον λόγο του Θεού, στην εξουσία του Θεού και στη δύναμη του Θεού. Όταν ο Θεός εκστόμισε τις λέξεις “Γενηθήτω φώς”, έγινε φως. Ο Θεός δεν ξεκίνησε κάποιο εγχείρημα. Το φως εμφανίστηκε ως αποτέλεσμα του λόγου Του. Αυτό ήταν το φως, το οποίο ο Θεός ονόμασε μέρα και από αυτό εξαρτάται η ανθρώπινη ύπαρξη ακόμα και σήμερα. Επειδή το πρόσταξε ο Θεός, η υπόσταση και η αξία του δεν έχουν αλλάξει ποτέ και αυτό δεν εξαφανίστηκε ποτέ. Η ύπαρξή του αποδεικνύει την εξουσία και τη δύναμη του Θεού και διακηρύσσει την ύπαρξη του Δημιουργού, και επιβεβαιώνει ξανά και ξανά την ταυτότητα και τη θέση του Δημιουργού. Δεν είναι απροσδιόριστο, ούτε απατηλό, αλλά είναι ένα αληθινό φως, ορατό από τον άνθρωπο. Από τη στιγμή εκείνη και μετά, σ’ αυτόν τον άδειο κόσμο στον οποίο “η δε γη ήτο άμορφος και έρημος· και σκότος επί του προσώπου της αβύσσου”, παρήχθη το πρώτο υλικό αγαθό. Αυτό το πράγμα είναι αποτέλεσμα των λέξεων από το στόμα του Θεού και εμφανίστηκε στην πρώτη πράξη της δημιουργίας όλων των πραγμάτων από τη εξουσία και τον λόγο του Θεού. Λίγο μετά, ο Θεός πρόσταξε να ξεχωρίσει το φως από το σκοτάδι… Όλα άλλαξαν και ολοκληρώθηκαν χάρη στον λόγο του Θεού… Ο Θεός αποκάλεσε αυτό το φως «Μέρα» και το σκοτάδι «Νύχτα». Από τότε, το πρώτο απόγευμα και το πρώτο πρωινό δημιουργήθηκαν στον κόσμο που ο Θεός ήθελε να δημιουργήσει και ο Θεός είπε ότι αυτή ήταν η πρώτη μέρα. Αυτή η μέρα ήταν η πρώτη μέρα της δημιουργίας όλων των πραγμάτων από τον Δημιουργό, ήταν η αρχή της δημιουργίας όλων των πραγμάτων και η πρώτη φορά που φάνηκε η εξουσία και η δύναμη του Δημιουργού σ’ αυτόν τον κόσμο που Εκείνος δημιούργησε. ...»

Elgin Streetscape 1820-1920
The five blocks on Elgin Street, between Wellington and Bruce present a parade of architectural evolution from the early 19th to 20th centuries. The Duke house at *206 Elgin circa 1855 has covered its original logs with wooden shipboard siding. Across the street, the stone liquor store was the 1860 foundry of H D Smith. At *306 Elgin the elegant wooden cross gabled home was built by Samuel Langford as a wedding gift for his daughter. At Drummond, note the 1860s, 1 ½ story clapboard and on the opposite corner a 1920s generic, both carefully restored. Further up Elgin at Drummond are fine examples of the red brick houses with colourful yellow brick quoins and trim, stylish and popular in the 1880s.
