Seen at a distance of nearly 12 miles from Tipsoo Lake, and looking past the jagged remnants of Little Tahoma Peak, is the eastern face of Mount Rainier. Mount Rainier is the highest peak of the Cascade volcanoes, rising 14,411 feet above sea level. It is also considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in North America. Little Tahoma Peak is actually part of Mount Rainier itself; Little Tahoma Peak is the remnant of a much larger version of Mount Rainier that collapsed several thousand years ago. Albus the Crab at Barrackville Covered Bridge, 1853. A modified Burr Truss arch, the bridge is 145 feet and spans Buffalo Creek. Confederate General William E. Jones nearly burned it during his April 1863 raid into then-northern Virginia (prior to West Virginia breaking way), but Confederate loyalists William and Dolly Ice of Ice's Mill convinced him to spare it. Today traffic is routed past it on a modern bridge, but Barrackville Bridge is a rare bridge that is still capable of carrying vehicular traffic with no modern undergirding to reinforce it. Good friends we've lost along the way In this great future you can't forget your past so dry your tears

I lived in Tallahassee from 1992 - 1997. I interned at the Museum of Florida History in 1994, and then got my first post-FSU job there from 1994 - 1995 when budget cuts slashed a number of state jobs. The museum was opened in 1977 and is housed in the R. A. Gray Building behind the state capitol. One of my early jobs was cataloguing and recording the condition of several Civil War flags before sending them for conservation, the most rare being the 5th Florida regimental flag. Other exhibits I regularly cleaned, such as the case for the builder's model of the battleship USS Florida and citrus packing house. I had a minor part assisting in the construction of the diorama of Florida's first people. Tallahassee, Florida. (Nathanael Miller, 05 Nov. 2018)
