Is money, the evildoer of everything on this planet? I was just inspired by this simple question, so there's a poem for it!
Money Money Money
Geld, argent, soldi, dinero, money
Do we just live for milk and honey?
Do we just live for the lime of money?
I was told that some sly and die for it
During a short, sweet, lifetime’s journey
Do we chiefly and merely seek for money?
Do we deal with it truthfully or deceitfully?
Lured by it cheerfully or reluctantly?
Some are admired by worth of wealth...
Some feel influential sole by prosperity
Some feel helpless for their deficiency
Some blame it on their doomed adversity
Some spite it into everyone's miserable face
It's not as kind and sweet as it may seem
It could turn you into greediness and wicked insanity
Therefore abstain from it, because money bleeds.
Of my recent journey into the Gelder Peaks, I must recount one extraordinary event. While mounting the foothills of the Gelder Peaks, just barely outside of Lilyvale, and hiking for no more than half of an afternoon I stumbled across a dwarf druid. A sturdy, and rather surly being, who squinted suspiciously as he looked about the mountainside. It seemed quite odd to find a dwarf who still studied the druidic arts, for I had thought most of his kin had left such ancient rites and rituals to what they felt were races of lesser sophistication. Regardless, this particular dwarf was mid-incantation when I came upon him. He was standing in the midst of a boulder strewn field, just nearly above the timberline. I could barely make out the words he mumbled, the ancient dwarvish he spoke sat heavy on his tongue, and most phrases were slurred beyond recognition. I could make out a few simple, one of which I will translate for you here: “… of earthen skin, and rocky bone … rise soil, rise roots, rise wood, and stone …” After a few more undecipherable mutterings the began ground shaking suddenly with a light rumble and the very mountainside moaned as one awaking from a restful slumber. My curiosity making it impossible for me to remain hidden any longer, I poked my head out from behind the bush where I knelt. The dwarf continued to utter his ancient verse as I crept out silently and stood transfixed by the wondrous site. Then, with finality, the dwarf raised his boney staff skyward and thrust it down upon the earth. A rush of wind shot up the side of the mountain and before me in the clearing, boulders that were once mere objects became an animate thing. Stones swirled, and congealed, and fell somehow into place. Then the wind died down, the moaning stopped, and where there was once nothing but air there stood a stone giant. A living pile of rocks, a fabled elemental forged from the earth…

Als Tourist bekommt man in der DVR Korea keine einheimische Währung in die Hand – weder sind Einfuhr oder Ausfuhr erlaubt, noch wird das Geld irgendwo gewechselt. Der Ausländer bezahlt alles mit Euro, Yuan oder anderen harten Fremdwährungen. Obwohl auch in Devisenläden alle Preise in koreanischen Won angeschrieben sind, bleibt diese Währung irgendwie ein Mysterium.
Der offizielle Wechselkurs liegt bei 100 Won zum US-Dollar und ca. 130 Won zum Euro. Zu diesen Kursen werden die Beträge in allen Geschäften, in denen Touristen einkaufen dürfen, umgerechnet. Zum Teil handelt es sich dabei offensichtlich um „Devisengeschäfte“, die für Ausländer und privilegierte Inländer gedacht sind und in denen trotz Preisschildern in Won nur in Fremdwährung bezahlt werden kann. Allerdings bewegten sich die Preise in einigen Geschäften, die sich eindeutig an koreanische Kunden richten, auf ähnlichem Niveau. Unseren Führern zufolge kann dort in Won bezahlt werden.
Dies widerspräche allerdings der im Internet einhellig verbreiteten Information, dass der Schwarzmarkt-Kurs derzeit etwa 8‘000 Won pro US-Dollar beträgt (von unseren Führern als „Propaganda“ abgetan), denn bei so einem Kurs wären die Preise der (mehrheitlich importierten) Produkte lächerlich niedrig. Möglicherweise handelte es sich also auch bei diesen Geschäften um Devisenläden. An einer Autobahnraststätte kostete nämlich eine Getränkedose 5‘000 Won (nach offiziellem Kurs 50 US-Dollar!). Für diesen Schwarzmarkt-Kurs spricht auch die Tatsache, dass in Dandong gesamte Banknotensätze (bis zu 5‘000 Won) für nur 4 Franken als Souvenirs verkauft werden. Definitiv mit Won bezahlbar sind hingegen die Fahrten mit dem öffentlichen Verkehr in Pjöngjang, der Tarif beträgt immer 5 Won.
Die verschiedenen Wechselkurse sind für die Löhne der Koreaner entscheidend. Normale Löhne in Nordkorea betragen zwischen 20‘000 und 30‘000 Won – gemäss offiziellem Kurs immerhin 200 bis 300 Franken, gemäss Schwarzmarkt-Kurs hingegen nur 2.50 bis 3.50 Franken.
Da die DVR Korea den Sozialismus aufrecht erhält, gibt es eigentlich ein System zur Verteilung der Lebensmittel. Es ist nicht vorgesehen, Lebensmittel in Läden zu kaufen. Auch Werbung ist in Korea völlig unbekannt. Dennoch gibt es Läden aller Art – meist unauffällig beschriftet im Erdgeschoss von Wohnblöcken, ausserdem kleine Kioske und pinke Zelte auf den grösseren Strassen (zumindest in Pjöngjang). Als Tourist hat man nur selten Zutritt zu den Läden, deshalb kann ich das Warenangebot nicht beurteilen. In jenen Lebensmittelgeschäften, in denen wir waren, gab es vorwiegend importierte Süssigkeiten, Snacks und Getränke – hingegen kein Fleisch, Gemüse oder Reis. Märkte sahen wir gar nie, sie sollen aber existieren (und ein recht üppiges Warenangebot haben). Da sie den Idealen des Staates widersprechen, werden sie wohl den Touristen nicht unter die Nase gerieben.
