The setting sun was illuminating this copper-toned gate. I liked how the lanterns stand parallel along the path and make a nice background to the gate's pattern.

I tried SO HARD to get the red hand rail perfectly centered, but, alas! it was not to be.

A couple of non-HDR shots from my one night layover in San Francisco...I 've been keeping pretty busy lately with flying on nasty airlines back and forth across the Pacific Ocean, taking me to wonderful photo opportunities. It was just me, the rental car, and my navigation traversing San Francisco on a gorgeous, crisp, clear Friday night during a recent one-night layover en route back to Japan... I had to capture the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Here, the North Tower looms large with the city in the background.

A drilling bit sits atop the gates on the road into the old Humble Gas Plant in the Tomball Oil Field, Tomball Texas The gate is now on Humble Road. Oil and gas production was an important part of Tomball's history.
From 1907 to 1933 Tomball was a shipping point on the railroad with most of the people primarily involved in farming and ranching activities. The coming of the railroad in 1906 was followed by a post office in 1908. The town acquired its first school in 1908 . In 1913, electric lights and telephone service became widely available in the little town. By 1914 Tomball had a population of 350, a bank, a blacksmith, several stores, six hotels, and two cotton gins. Charles F. Hoffman was an early settler who operated the first general store, and J. J. Trichel was postmaster.
Then In 1933 Tomball changed forever in just a day. On May 27, drillers struck oil west of town on the property of J. F. W. Kob. Almost overnight Tomball became a oil boom-town. In 1935, the original contract negotiated between Tomball and the Humble Oil and Refining Company (later Exxon ) gave free water and natural gas to Tomball residents for ninety years in exchange for drilling rights within the city limits. On July 6, 1933, Tomball, popularly known as "Oil Town U.S.A.," was incorporated with a population of 665. With the discovery of oil, however, this figure tripled. Soon there were twenty-five to thirty oil and gas companies producing within a five-mile radius of Tomball. Humble built a "camp" in Tomball which included housing, recreation facilities and other facilities for its workers. Tomball became famous as a city with free gas and water but no municipal cemetery. The hydrocarbon reservoirs played out and Exxon sold their interest in the late 1980s. There is still a little production from the field and the gas plant is still operational, however most of the field has now been abandoned.

So, this is my vision of the Black Gate. I know that the official Lego set is different and it is an awesome replica of the gate from the movie, but I see the gate as a semicircular one, so if you're standing in front of the gate doors, it looks like the gate itself will consume you.
The houses in Monterrey, Mexico are built with either an enclosed front porch area or an enclosed area to park one car. They have some type of iron gate facing the street which encloses and protects the property. I liked the decorative style of this one.
Last year at this time I had just arrived in Monterrey for the Christmas holidays. I stayed there for 2 1/2 months with my son and his family.
Monterrey is a large city of over 3 million people. Like cities everywhere, it is comprised of a number of adjacent satellite cities. Many of the food chains popular in the US are also in Monterrey. At various times we ate at Chili's, Applebee's, McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, and several other chain restaurants. About the only purchased Mexican food we had came from a local taco shop in the neighborhood. We did our grocery shopping at Walmart. In some ways I had never left Texas ;-) Well, you might say the language of Spanish, but come to think of it - that's here too. The only difference is that our principal language is English, and their principal language is Spanish, but you find plenty of both languages in both countries.
Oh my goodness, I forgot about Starbucks ;-) We used the drive-through lane several times. And there's an upscale sandwich shop, that I can't remember the name of right now. They delivered dinner to our house several times.
I haven't seen "a proper set of gates" for quite a while, so was pleased to accidentally come across these today at Goxhill in North Lincolnshire on the Grimsby to Barton upon Humber line.

North of here is CRD Water District land, centred around Sook Lake Reservoir, which most of Victoria gets their water from. The old rail line that is now the Galloping Goose Trail goes alongside Sooke Lake and over the hills to Shawnigan Lake. Turning this into a usable trail again would be spectacular but is unlikely.
Our Daily Challenge~ Gates
For many years, we've had several gates put up all over the house to keep certain spaces off limits to certain pets, namely our peeing Chihuahua "Finnegan". The rest of the pets freely and easily jump over them while the humans either step or even trip over them. Once, I broke my foot when landing from a full-stride hurdle over one of the gates during my race to get the telephone - which I also missed. It was only a telemarketer, anyway.

A view through the 'Pytchley Gates', once a grand entrance into the unloved Overstone Hall, built in the 1860s as a gift for Lord Overstone by his wife. She died before it was completed; he hated it and refused to use it. Talk about ungrateful! The grand entrance gates were built in the 17th century, and located at Pytchley Old Hall. They were brought to the Hall in the 1860s.
Looking through the gates, you can just see the sad remains of the hall, which was gutted by fire in 2001. The debate about a future for the Hall has dragged on ever since.
I don't normally go in for the combination of HP5 and Ilfosol 3, it's a little too grainy for my tastes, but I just wanted to check the camera was fully working before using it for something important. My preferred choice is for Ilford Delta 400 and ID-11, but I really didn't want to make up a fresh batch of ID-11 for a test roll.

VWS3357 Copyright © VW Selburn 2016: A 'Grab shot' from the city side, taken from the open top tour bus which I joined outside of Macy's in Union Square, San Francisco. I declined to go on the Leger excursion because I knew I would not get such a clear photo from the inside of the coach. Notwithstanding the tint in the window, the seat would have been lower down. On the 'plus' side, the coach would have been warmer! Traversing the Golden Gate Bridge in an open top bus is a very cold, windy experience. That is why I also declined to walk across the bridge. :)

this is a 3 exposure HDR @ [-1,0,+1]. I combine the exposures in Photomatix using detail enhancer and retouched the resulting image in Lightroom. No Photoshop this time... :P

Golden Gate
The Golden Gate is a monument of defensive and sacred architecture of Kyivan Rus and is considered one of the oldest buildings in Eastern Europe.
It was erected in the first half of the 11th century and named after the Golden Gate in Constantinople, it served as the main entrance to Kyiv and was the only stone gate in the city’s fortification system. It was a battle tower with a passage crowned by the Annunciation Gateway Church.
