North of here is CRD Water District land, centred around Sook Lake Reservoir, which most of Victoria gets their water from. The old rail line that is now the Galloping Goose Trail goes alongside Sooke Lake and over the hills to Shawnigan Lake. Turning this into a usable trail again would be spectacular but is unlikely.

For many years, we've had several gates put up all over the house to keep certain spaces off limits to certain pets, namely our peeing Chihuahua "Finnegan". The rest of the pets freely and easily jump over them while the humans either step or even trip over them. Once, I broke my foot when landing from a full-stride hurdle over one of the gates during my race to get the telephone - which I also missed. It was only a telemarketer, anyway.
the via di nocera runs into pompeii from the neighbouring town of nocera, and provides quickest access to the amphitheatre. there was a big rumble here in 59ad over 2 rival teams of gladiators - pompeii vs. nocera. the emperor nero was so shocked that he banned all gladiatorial contests in pompeii for 10 years. must have chaffed the people terribly, like all romans they loved their sport - and especially coming from nero!
this view is from the south, with vesuvius sulking beneath a rainy veil of mist. two tourists are sheltering in the gate itself looking at their photos presumably. ciao pompeii.

About the same time a trifling beginning led to frightful bloodshed between the inhabitants of Nuceria and Pompeii, at a gladiatorial show exhibited by Livineius Regulus, who had been, as I have related, expelled from the Senate. With the unruly spirit of townsfolk, they began with abusive language of each other; then they took up stones and at last weapons, the advantage resting with the populace of Pompeii, where the show was being exhibited. And so there were brought to Rome a number of the people of Nuceria, with their bodies mutilated by wounds, and many lamented the deaths of children or of parents. The emperor entrusted the trial of the case to the Senate, and the Senate to the consuls, and then again the matter being referred back to the Senators, the inhabitants of Pompeii were forbidden to have any such public gathering for ten years, and all associations they had formed in defiance of the laws were dissolved. A view through the 'Pytchley Gates', once a grand entrance into the unloved Overstone Hall, built in the 1860s as a gift for Lord Overstone by his wife. She died before it was completed; he hated it and refused to use it. Talk about ungrateful! The grand entrance gates were built in the 17th century, and located at Pytchley Old Hall. They were brought to the Hall in the 1860s.
Looking through the gates, you can just see the sad remains of the hall, which was gutted by fire in 2001. The debate about a future for the Hall has dragged on ever since.
I don't normally go in for the combination of HP5 and Ilfosol 3, it's a little too grainy for my tastes, but I just wanted to check the camera was fully working before using it for something important. My preferred choice is for Ilford Delta 400 and ID-11, but I really didn't want to make up a fresh batch of ID-11 for a test roll.

I declined to go on the Leger excursion because I knew I would not get such a clear photo from the inside of the coach. Notwithstanding the tint in the window, the seat would have been lower down. On the 'plus' side, the coach would have been warmer! Traversing the Golden Gate Bridge in an open top bus is a very cold, windy experience. That is why I also declined to walk across the bridge. :)

this is a 3 exposure HDR @ [-1,0,+1]. I combine the exposures in Photomatix using detail enhancer and retouched the resulting image in Lightroom. No Photoshop this time... :P

Golden Gate
The Golden Gate is a monument of defensive and sacred architecture of Kyivan Rus and is considered one of the oldest buildings in Eastern Europe.
It was erected in the first half of the 11th century and named after the Golden Gate in Constantinople, it served as the main entrance to Kyiv and was the only stone gate in the city’s fortification system. It was a battle tower with a passage crowned by the Annunciation Gateway Church.
After a great and relaxing weekend, it feels good that Monday work is done. Here's something to ease us into another great week in San Francisco. For me, the Golden Gate is always a soothing inspiration. A good omen.

I was disappointed I couldn't get a better photo, but I was fighting mobs of tourists at the time.
Shot in December during a lull in the snow, I took this shot near Attenborough Sailing Club. I noticed that the steam rising from Ratcliffe PS was beginning to catch the light from the rising sun. I initially struggled to find a suitable composition as I felt that I needed some foreground interest. Although it's not beautiful, I decided that the gate arrangement was a suitable subject to balance the composition.

The India Gate (Hindi: इंडिया गेट) is the national monument of India. It is one of the largest war memorials in India. Originally, a Statue of King George V had stood under the now-vacant canopy in front of the India Gate, and was removed to Coronation Park with other statues.
