A 1969 Pontiac GTO on display during the 2022 Fall Wheel & Wings Car Show at the Air Force Armament Museum near Eglin AFB, Florida.
El Ferrari 288 GTO (también conocido simplemente como Ferrari GTO) es un exótico automóvil superdeportivo de homologación presentado en el Salón del Automóvil de Ginebra de 1984 por el fabricante italiano Ferrari y fabricado entre 1984 y 1985. El nombre "288 GTO" significa que tiene un motor de 2,8 litros V8 y que es un Gran Turismo Omologato (en italiano: Gran Turismo Homologado).
Este modelo ha sido el primero de una línea de superdeportivos de Ferrari, luego continuada por los Ferrari F40, Ferrari F50, Ferrari Enzo y Ferrari LaFerrari. A diferencia de sus predecesores, el 288 GTO equipaba aire acondicionado y sistema de sonido. El 288 GTO fue nombrado el segundo mejor automóvil de la década de 1980 por la revista americana Sports Car International, por detrás de su rival alemán el Porsche 959.
Este vehículo fue creado para competir en la nueva serie de carreras del Grupo B, para el cual se exigían al menos 200 unidades para su homologación. Los motores podían ser de hasta 4.0 litros de cilindrada (con un factor de corrección si disponían de turbo). Sin embargo, como solamente Ferrari y Porsche se presentaron para competir en las carreras, el campeonato se abandonó al poco tiempo, dejando sólo el Grupo B del campeonato Rally. El Porsche 959 (como el Porsche 961) corrió sólo tres veces en el Grupo B, pero el 288 GTO nunca corrió y los 272 automóviles construidos (todos originalmente pintados en rojo) siguen siendo puramente coches de carretera.
Se fabricaron 6 prototipos, de los cuales 3 se tiene la certeza de que han desaparecido (dos en crash-tests y uno en desmantelamiento para recambios). Los tres restantes son automóviles perfectamente funcionales, y todos han terminado en manos privadas. El hecho de disponer de pequeñas diferencias en el diseño de la carrocería y en el equipamiento (como extintor o cinturones de seguridad de 4 anclajes) los convierten en los GTO más exóticos. Uno de ellos, chasis #47649,3 es el único ejemplar repintado oficialmente por Ferrari: lo hizo para un evento especial cuando el coche aún era de su propiedad, hasta que en 1987 un afortunado cliente consiguió comprarlo.
