How is it that some people always know how to get from one place to another, and others always get lost? What do we know about how humans navigate, and can we predict their actions before they even start? This talk explores navigation research using everything from video games to real-world forests – and confirms the belief that there are good navigators and people who are perpetually lost.

elke plek is fascinerend

Where is that gardener anyway?

San Francisco's Recreation and Parks Department is knocking at the door of the 21st century, begging to be let in.

The department is asking its commission to approve $775,000 worth of technology upgrades this week that will allow the agency to track its department vehicles through GPS, create an online marketing Web site for park and recreational programs, install technology that will open doors at more than 100 facilities through an electronic card or code, and create a membership card system for users of recreation programs.

In general, the upgrades are aimed at making the department more efficient and improving its customer service. In the past, the agency has been criticized for absentee gardeners (hence the GPS system, which will also allow for more preventative maintenance); they have also received heat for a poorly designed Web site and, more generally, how difficult it is to register for programs because of a lack of consistency. The Web site redesign and the membership card scanning system will help solve those problems, the department said, and also limit how much cash employees have to manage.

Finally, the keyless entry system will allow a department with more than 1,000 doors a simple way to open and close facilities -- and track those properties because they will be able to see when any door in the system is open or closed. That means, again, more consistency for the public.

The money will come from the city's open space fund, which sets aside 2 1/2 cents of every $100 in property tax paid in San Francisco to "provide enhanced park and recreational services and facilities." The money is supposed to be spent on new parks and improving existing facilities capital improvements, not salaries or recreation programs. SFGate/ Chronicle

Somebody flipped their car tonight in Hudson. Fortunately no serious

injuries. However, the real breakthrough was the inadvertent follow-up

with the officer from the other night. He apologized for the other

night and I had a chance to explain why we do what we do as

photojournalists. I basically told him that as grand-scale an event

that 9/11 was, it didn't compare to the other night, obviously. I went

further to say that If we had not the brave men and women who had the

courage to capture such atrocities we would not learn or know so that

we can prevent such things from happening in the future. They are

tools to learn from. I see myself as not only a person who reflects

the visuals of life but a teacher, a poet, a sociologist, a

psychologist, an informant. Without the eyes and ears of a community,

photojournalists, we don't learn, we don't progress, we don't know.

Tonight here is my message to all to slow down in inclement

conditions. Have good tires. GPS systems can tell us upcoming road

contours. Wear a seatbelt. Parents, teach your kids about safe driving

and follow through they understand and apply such.

this is an annual event apparantly. we get 2 15 passenger vans. tell everyone whos coming to dress up and we go to every tim hortons in the city and see how many prizes in roll up the rim to win we can get!

by the end we had so many cups it was as tall as me!

for my non canadian friends. roll up the rim to win is a tim hortons gambling ploy. if you buy at least a medium coffee or tea they give you a cup which at the end you can "roll up the rim" and printed on the underside of said rim is either "please try again" or "win <----insert prize there"

usually its just coffee or a donut. but you can win a GPS system. a boat or a SUV!

Following the Howard County boundary along the Patapsco, Deep Run, and Patuxent Rivers, the three band stylized rainbow, a common depiction in the 16th and 17th centuries, represents both Howard County's past and its diverse present. The flag is divided in two as the green fields of Western Maryland give way to the blue of the Chesapeake Bay, with Howard County being depicted as a uniting force between two Maryland regions. Maize, an important food for the Susquehannock and Piscataway people, represent Howard County's agrarian past. Two stars for John Eager Howard's 2nd Regiment of the famed Maryland Line point the way to Maryland's future, as embodied by the county's long history of scientific contributions from Benjamin Banneker’s work with the Ellicott Brothers, to JPL's pioneering work on satellite GPS systems, to the county being the home of several scientists and astronauts.

Tunnel rat is given a new toy a gps system to map out the tunnels of the city.

From a time when phones were made for phone calls. No apps to mess with, no cameras, no texting (that's what typewriters were used for), no GPS system tracking your every move, no games to play, just pure one on one conversations.

As I finished up a meeting at the Alviso Environmental Education Center (EEC) there were a couple of hours of daylight left in the short December afternoon. There were so many birds around the EEC that I decided not to fly a kite there. Instead, I headed up to to Salt Pond A23 just north of Drawbridge. My last visit there in September found the pond essentially dry and sporting an interesting palette of colors and textures. I was curious about how it looked now that our winter rains have arrived.

It was an interesting KAP session. The winds were low (measured at 3.5 – 4.5 mph at the ground using a Kestrel anemometer) and the water surface was still. For some reason I thought the winds might fill in a bit and launched my 7.5-foot Rokkaku. This newly-sewn kite was able to lift the dSLR rig but only by a small margin. I spent the next hour or so as the sun set walking up and down the levee with my gear just barely floating above the 25% saline water. While slight the winds were smooth and it all worked out just fine.

This was my first flight using an airborne GPS system to log coordinates that were later used to geotag the photographs. The map position for each image was thus produced by an automated workflow. Neat.

I remember this shot the most because our guide told us this was the GPS system their used back in the days.

The Mitad del Mundo (Spanish: Middle of the World) is a tract of land owned by the prefecture of the province of Pichincha, Ecuador. It is located in the San Antonio parish of the canton of Quito, north of the center of Quito.

The grounds contain the Museo Etnográfico Mitad del Mundo, a museum about the indigenous ethnography of Ecuador. The 30-meter-tall monument, built between 1979 and 1982, was constructed to mark the point where the equator passes through the country in the geodetic datum in use in Ecuador at that time. A line down the center of the east-facing staircase, and across the plaza, was meant to mark the equator, and countless tourists over the years have had their pictures taken straddling this line. In the modern datum of the World Geodetic System (WGS84), which is used in GPS systems and computer mapping products like Google Earth, the equator is placed about 240 meters north of the marked line. This discrepancy is partially due to increased accuracy but primarily due to a different choice of mapping datum.

Zirakpur - “Inspired by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, who is always keen to take the government to the people and through this latest move of publicity vans, we have decided to approach the people with a gamut of steps taken by us to ameliorate their lot.”

This was stated by Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) NK Sharma, after inaugurating ‘Ik Shaam Apni Sarkar De Naal” publicity van show at Lohgarh village in Zirakpur here yesterday.

In the age of technological advances, it is pertinent for the government to tap multi-media for effective publicity of its achievements. As such, vans equipped with LED screens will reach people in every town and city of the state to highlight achievements of the SAD-BJP government.

He said being the first-of-its-kind and innovative project in Punjab, it would be aimed at bringing the government closer to people of the state. Each custom-made van would screen short films on welfare measures and the achievements of the government at prominent places, including bus stands, markets and other public spots, to provide awareness to residents about social welfare schemes.

He said the achievements, projects and policies drafted for the welfare of people would give public an insight into the revolutionary steps

taken by the SAD-BJP government and each viewer would get the feel of being a proud Punjabi — ‘Saada Punjab Saadi Shaan, Saanu Punjabi Hon Te Maan’.

Sharma said the vans were equipped with inbuilt GPS system with latest vehicle tracking equipment and surveillance cameras which would help in monitoring of vehicle movement and public response.

He said detailed programme and guidelines had been chalked out by the Public Relations Department to cover the entire state.

The CPS said the project would also be a befitting answer to opposition parties who were indulging in false propaganda about development done in Punjab during the past nine years and in defaming the state.
