This TomTom is their mid-range GPS system. Things I like about this unit are the ability to add personal pictures, music and make phone calls on it using Bluetooth on your phone.

As I finished up a meeting at the Alviso Environmental Education Center (EEC) there were a couple of hours of daylight left in the short December afternoon. There were so many birds around the EEC that I decided not to fly a kite there. Instead, I headed up to to Salt Pond A23 just north of Drawbridge. My last visit there in September found the pond essentially dry and sporting an interesting palette of colors and textures. I was curious about how it looked now that our winter rains have arrived.
It was an interesting KAP session. The winds were low (measured at 3.5 – 4.5 mph at the ground using a Kestrel anemometer) and the water surface was still. For some reason I thought the winds might fill in a bit and launched my 7.5-foot Rokkaku. This newly-sewn kite was able to lift the dSLR rig but only by a small margin. I spent the next hour or so as the sun set walking up and down the levee with my gear just barely floating above the 25% saline water. While slight the winds were smooth and it all worked out just fine.
This was my first flight using an airborne GPS system to log coordinates that were later used to geotag the photographs. The map position for each image was thus produced by an automated workflow. Neat.

Daphné and I went to scrapbooking stores in the Netherlands. They sell so many beautiful things there. It's a 2;5 hour car drive and the shops are not that easy to find so we used a GPS system. (124/365)
Assistance for ship navigation - laptop, connected to the GPS system. When asked about the likes of this job, Martin didn't go into the romantic details about sunsets, lovely winds and beutiful sights. "I enjoy maneuvering the ship the most" - he said.
thanks to the asshole who broke into my car this morning and stole nothing. you caused me to drive home 2 and a half hours in the cold being blasted by wind on the highway, you made me miss work, and you made me spend money that i certainly didn't have. ... and what did you get? a piece of plastic that holds a gps system. great.

This is one of my favorite photos! Welcome Home! This is what Black Rock Desert, aka "the playa" looks like up close, before anyone arrives. It is a former alkalai lakebed and in the winter rainy season floods with water. It is hardpack until people and cars traverse it and then it becomes a fine, playa dust that clings to everything and everyone. Dust storm winds of up to 100 mph blow through. During the day it often reaches 100 degrees; at night the temperatures can drop to 40 degrees. The event is a LNT (leave no trace); each individual packs in and packs out their belongings -- and trash. The land is owned by the U.S. Government. Burning Man applies for a license to use the land every year from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Every year, post-event, BLM takes their handheld GPS system, puts in random coordinates, and goes to the spot with a rake. For every feather, peanut shell, sprinkle of glitter, cigarette butt -- you name it -- Burning Man is "marked." The reissue of a license year to year is based upon the "grade." Burning Man has never been refused the license; "burners" and Burning Man take LNT very seriously. Every year Black Rock City is raised and razed in pristene condition.

About Westwood Plateau
WESTWOOD PLATEAU…Experiences Above & Beyond
When award-winning golf architect Michael Hurdzan, Golf World Magazine’s 1997 Architect of the Year, sets out to design a course he says that he wants to “create a ‘Wow’ effect for golfers.” At his Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club, named ‘Best New Course in Canada in 1996’ by SCOREGolf Magazine, Hurdzan created his patented “Wow” effect on virtually every hole.
As a result, there is no ‘signature’ hole at the spectacular layout on Eagle Mountain because each hole stands alone. Yet each hole bears Hurdzan’s distinctive signature. “This is a magical piece of ground,” said Hurdzan. “When we built the course, the whole intent was to keep the great views, keep the special ethereal feeling and still create as wide a course as we could so that the average golfer could enjoy it.” Hurdzan not only achieved his lofty goal, he exceeded it. On this magical Coquitlam plateau 30 minutes east and 1,300 feet above Vancouver, the golf values are as pure as the snow on the distant mountain peaks. Little wonder that in 1999, Golf Digest called Westwood Plateau: “The best game in town.”
Whether playing from the back tees at 6,770 yards or from any of the other three tee boxes that gradually shorten the course to 5,514 yards, players are confronted by a singular challenge on each hole – deciding whether the view is more striking from the tee or from the green. The ProShot GPS system on each power cart takes the pressure off club selection by displaying precise yardages on easy-to-read screens. It also provides yardages to the hazards; individual tips on playing the hole; updates on your tournament; and ProShot can quickly relay messages in case of emergencies. In addition to the on-cart GPS, you’ll also receive range balls, day locker, bottled water, tee gift, and continental breakfast included in your fees. Other available extras range from transportation via helicopter from downtown Vancouver to fully-stocked personal mini bars on your cart. These above and beyond services helped earn Westwood Plateau ‘5th Best Customer Service in North America’, as ranked by 6500 Golf Digest readers, and Golf Digest’s 4 1/2 - star rating in their Best Places to Play edition.
A fully public facility, Westwood Plateau offers 27 holes of outstanding golf, two distinct restaurants, a nationally recognized teaching academy and a 35,000 square foot clubhouse perfect for corporate entertaining and weddings.
Westwood Plateau’s mission statement is simple – To deliver Above & Beyond experiences through superior service and product quality! We look forward to serving you!

What a day... what a day!
This morning I woke up at the 4:30am mark to bring Shannon's mother down to Lowe's so she could "get her bargain on" during the "Black Friday" sales. She was able to get what she wanted without much hassle so we were pretty much in and out. Since we were out Shannon and I decided to swing by Staples (Shannon wanted a fancy GPS system) and Best Buy. Shannon let me out in front of best Buy and went off to find a parking space. Little did Shannon's mother know there was a pile of puke on the ground right outside her door. of course she stepped in it and the ride home was full of dry heaving from the smell and hysterical laughing.
Later that afternoon Shannon and I decided to take drive down to Atlantic City to take some pictures... Instead we found ourselves in the casino for a few good hours.
What happens in Atlantic City stays in Atlantic City!

Joe Murray sits on his Piper Cub trying to call his partner, Ron Siwik, to find out when he will arrive to Portage County Airport. Because of the planes age, there is no electrical system and most modern day instruments are not included. The Piper Cub is equipped with an altimeter, tachometer, airspeed indicator, and an oil-pressure/temperature gauge. Murray has installed a GPS system for emergencies and keeps a radio with him for safety reasons.

DUBLIN AND IRELAND
Friday (8/30) This was my first meal in Dublin, and it was a winner! The hotel concierge suggested a gastropub a few blocks away for good food and drink, so I went to The Old Spot on Bath Avenue. It was busy yet quiet, old yet upscale, and intriguing.
I started with one of the most amazing appetizers I've ever had and, by leaps and bounds, the best scotch egg I've tasted. On the menu, it's listed as: "Free Range Scotch Egg, Andarl Pork & Sneem Black Pudding, Connemara Peat Whiskey Brown Sauce, Smoked Bacon Crumble." Andarl and Sneem are local (which I like). I enjoy black pudding occasionally but find it a bit intense. This use is genius - that intensity, married with the pork sausage, breading, and egg, makes an incredible bite. The eggs were perfectly jammy. And that sauce! Complex and deeply rich with a touch of sweetness reminiscent of apple butter. I licked the plate clean.
For my main course, I had the special: amazing crispy-skin perfectly-seasoned sea bass with king prawn, mussels, delicious potatoes that looked like seared scallops (hidden under the sea bass in the picture), romaine lettuce, pickled onions, and a luscious artichoke sauce.
Saturday (8/31) I've only spent a short time in Dublin, but got a feel for it. I enjoyed the waterways and older parts of town, wandered around Trinity College, saw some statues, mostly solved the non-user-friendly transportation systems, and ate some excellent food.
Most importantly, I got to hang with the incredible Kris Edlund Gibson, and we had such a delightful time catching up, talking about our lives and travels, and discussing American politics with such vociferous agreement that pretty much everyone sitting in or wandering through Temple Bar Square was brought up to speed.
Tonight, I managed to get a reservation at the Winding Stair Restaurant, which had been recommended by several. The stairs were not what I pictured—more like a nicer third-floor Brooklyn walk-up staircase. But the place had history and character, the service was great, and the food was excellent (although the Old Spot was better).
Tomorrow, I pick up my car and attempt to drive on the wrong side of Ireland's narrow country roads.
Sunday (9/1) Sunday morning, I picked up my car and took off on the left side of the road. Hertz clearly expects tourists. Two stickers on the windshield point and say "KEEP LEFT." And even though Ireland uses kilometers, the car's entire dash and GPS system uses miles and mph. The dash tells you the current speed limit in mph (perfectly timed to the signs with a little "ding" at each change) and gives a slightly annoying chime when you go over. Oh, and the side mirrors fold in when you lock the car or with a button when driving (more on that later).
The first morning, there was a lot of expressway going away from Dublin. It was easy-peasy and a great way to get adjusted—the lane warning buzzer got annoying, but it helped me get used to where to sit in the lane when you're on the right side of the car. "This is no problem," thought I, experiencing a minuscule, entirely meaningless portion of Ireland's road system.
Ireland's secondary roads - most of the "good" roads covering the country - should be a video game. It would be exhilarating. First, Ireland has absolutely no idea what a shoulder is - there aren't any. Of any kind. The edge of your lane will likely be a 7-foot-tall, perfectly groomed hedge. Oh, nobody grooms them - they are groomed by the cars and trucks driving past them. The hedges are better than the stone walls.
The road is a constant series of hills, curves, and switchbacks with no visibility (think 7-foot hedges) and a speed limit of 80 kph (50 mph). When a car approaches you from the front, if you're both tickling the hedges, you've got maybe a foot between you. At 50 mph.
Those are the good roads. You breathe a sigh of relief when you get onto one of them.
My first B&B was Bridgeview Farmhouse. Host Marion greeted me with coffee, homemade scones, and apple strudel. Breakfast the next morning was scones with homemade preserves, Irish yogurt, Irish cheese, fresh fruit, juice, and coffee/tea. And then you order your main breakfast (a full Irish breakfast, beans on toast, pancakes, or French toast). They eat a lot of breakfast in the British Isles. I had a nice conversation with a couple from Holland - I think every one of the guests was from a different country.
For Sunday supper, I went to the delightful Pink Elephant Restaurant for Roast Irish Beef with Yorkshire pudding, potatoes, vegetables, and a rich gravy—and Guinness. It was a charming place—they played jazz and classical music (and classical jazz), and my waiter (Niall) sat on the window sill and chatted with me about Ireland for around 10 minutes before taking my order.
Monday (9/2) Today, I started following the Wild Atlantic Way, a road system that follows Ireland's entire southern and western coasts. Much like the Great River Road that follows the Mississippi River, this isn't one road but rather a route with signage that includes all different types of roads.
I visited the Timoleague Abbey, built in the 13th Century, where you can walk through the old ruins and see newer gravestones mixed in with the old. Then, it was Red Strand Beach on a gorgeous sunny day, followed by the cliffs at Galley Head. I could see the Galley Head Lighthouse (the most powerful one in the world), but it was not open to visitors, so I had to admire it from afar. Long Strand Beach (right across the road from the strange CastleFreke Castle) was amazing, and you could see the power of the tides.
In one area of the beach were thousands upon thousands of tiny mussels (or similar creatures) with an incredibly strong grip on the stones. They spend high tide underwater and low tide out in the air and sun. The ladies at the Fish Shack nearby weren't sure what they were called (the light-colored ones are limpets). I got a sausage roll (my first in Ireland), which was quite good. Yes, I know it's a fish shack, but I can't live on fish and chips - I have to try other things, too!
I got lost numerous times, but between my GPS and Google Maps, I could always find a way back to where I wanted to be, sometimes via some tricky "roads."
One more time at The Pink Elephant (this time chicken liver paté with toasted sourdough, caramelized onions, and red currant jelly) and more delightful chats with Niall and good music.
Tomorrow, I head to Kilgarvan.
Tuesday (9/3) The Met Office weather app said it would be partly sunny with a 10% chance of rain today. Perfect! ...It rained eight times while I was out, but the rain was light and moved on. So... Ireland. But I got a rainbow! Wonderful.
Wednesday (9/4) Today was the famous Ring of Kerry. So many amazing sights. The Staige Stone Fort (round), the town of Sneem, Coomakesta Pass, various beaches and cliffs and forests, Bray Head on Valencia Island, the car ferry to Knights Town, Torc Waterfall, Ladies View (with the rainbow), and more.
I only witnessed many beauties from the corner of my eye as I never dared to take my eyes off the road when driving. I can't imagine that distracted driving is a thing here. I'm getting better at driving like a race-car driver on impossibly narrow, constantly curving roads (if you don't, you end up with a line of cars behind you). Just as you get to the point where you think you'll fly off the road because you're going so fast, you realize you're still 10 miles per hour below the speed limit.
I am now at Birchwood B&B in Kilgarven. Another beautiful place and I'll be here for four nights. Breakfasts at B&Bs in Ireland are like... You sit at the table, and they set three kinds of bread (one homemade), butter, three kinds of preserves, a choice of yogurt, fruit juice, a platter of local cheeses and fruits, and coffee/tea in front of you. And after you've been eating all this, then they say, "Now, what would you like for breakfast?" And there's a full Irish Breakfast with eggs, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, and bacon. Or French Toast, pancakes, an omelette, or smoked fish... And your host is doing it all by themself.
Supper is at local restaurants (I couldn't possibly eat lunch). Last night at Davitt's (sweet potato/carrot soup and fish and chips) and tonight at P.F. McCarthy's (celeriac/rosemary soup and sausage and bean casserole). They know how to make soup in Kenmare.
Thursday (9/5) Dingle and live music in a pub in Ireland!
The weather app called for sun and a less than 5% chance of rain. And it was mostly sunny and only rained once! Gorgeous. Today was Dingle—both the town and the peninsula. After about an hour's drive to the peninsula, I started out at the town of Inch and the amazing Inch Beach (which is not an inch but rather four miles long).
Dingle was next - a bit touristy but charming. I wandered through town, relaxed on the pier, and stopped at John Benny's Pub for an Irish toastie and a Murphy's. Note: on that same block, there is a place called Murphy's and a place called Murphy's Pub. It can cause some confusion - Murphy's is an ice cream shop, while the other place sells Murphy's (among other things). Both will happily sell you a pint.
Then it was the gorgeous southern loop of the Dingle Peninsula. Note: whenever you do these peninsula loops in Ireland, always go clockwise.
This evening, I checked off another bucket list item - I had Traditional Irish Stew and a Murphy's (this was a Murphy's day) while listening to live music in a pub in Ireland. J.Sull is a fantastic guitarist, and while he did some Irish tunes, he focused on jazz (with hints of classical). He also played "Route 66" for the guy from Illinois. It's close to midnight as I have returned to my B&B to post (yes, I know it's earlier where most of you are).
Friday (9/6) The last light in Europe...
Today, I spent time on the Beara Peninsula. No, there are no bears. Owen Mór, King of Ireland, sailed to Spain and met and married Beara, daughter of the King of Castille. Later, Owen, Beara, and a large army landed in Greenane. Owen took his wife to the highest hill on the island, and looking across the harbor, he named the island and the whole peninsula 'Beara' in honor of his wife. Nice.
It was a grey day, and I followed the peninsula past Allihies to the very end—Dursey Island. The only way to get to Dursey Island is by a somewhat rickety cable car that takes up to 6 people (or 1200 pounds) at a time. It's lots of fun. The island is great for hiking 4-6 hours, or, in my case, walking around some, taking pictures, and taking the cable car back. Dursey Island is known for receiving the last light in Europe as the sun sets.
And on the mainland side, there's a nice Fish and Chips shop.
Ireland - we need to talk about your sheep (Scotland, too). They're... colorful. Not in a cute way, but messily and awkwardly. These sheep are not being raised for wool, so farmers paint smears of color on them, which may be helpful for the farmers but really annoys photographers (i.e., me). The swatches of color have several purposes, including ownership (like brands), breeding cycles (a paint splotch on the rear indicates where the ram has been - that's got to be a bit embarrassing for the sheep), or veterinary treatments. Sheep with blue paint look a little alien, but the disturbing ones are the sheep with a big splotch of red paint on the back of their head - there are quite a few, but I didn't get a shot - it looks like they just survived a massacre.
So, you want a lovely bucolic photograph of fluffy white sheep on a hillside? Not so much.
Saturday (9/7) Moher, distance, and roundabouts
Today I once again spent a lot of hours driving - heading from Kilgarven to my next B&B in Oughterard, with a stop at the Cliffs of Moher.
It was hazy, so you've seen better photos of the cliffs, but at least I was there! However, I should tell you that the pictures are a lie. They make you think of a rugged place far from civilization with nobody around. What's missing is the 12 tour buses, 100 cars, 7 gift shops, visitor's center, meditation room, lines at the toilets, golf carts to take the mobility-challenged up to the best photography spots (yeah, I didn't see those until I was on my way down), and a €10 entrance fee.
After I finished my drive, I checked into my B&B and stopped at Powers Thatch, Pub and Restaurant, for a delicious smoked beef burger and a Murphy's.
Did you know that Ireland is smaller than Illinois? Ireland is actually .56 the size of Illinois. Now, I'm only exploring a portion of Ireland in 11 days and driving a ton. Can you imagine how much of Illinois I could cover in that time? Ireland may be smaller in land mass but massively larger in time and distance. There are no straight lines in Ireland.
Let's say you want to go 180 miles in Illinois. Your first reaction is, "That'll be about three hours at a 60 mph average." A little more if you have some back roads.
In Ireland, that 180-mile distance is closer to 270 miles because every road is nothing but curves (there are no straight lines). And then, except for a very few locations where there is actually an expressway, you're probably going to average 35 mph if you're pushing it on good roads, 25 mph if you get stuck behind a truck or bus (Why don't you pass the truck? There are no straightaways, remember?) So now, that 3-hour tour in Illinois has become 7-10 hours in Ireland.
Ireland is huge.
I'm getting the hang of roundabouts. Oh, I completely understood traffic circles as we have them in the U.S. and frankly belittled those who had problems with them - they're so easy. Roundabouts in the U.S. are arithmetic, while roundabouts in Ireland are calculus. There are roundabouts with two lanes entering, and you have to know which lane to start at to make the correct exit. I found a roundabout that had another embedded roundabout in the middle of the roundabout. And the strangest is the standard "T" intersection designated as a roundabout. There's no circle! But it's treated like a roundabout so that all three directions heading into the intersection are equal, and you defer to anyone from your right side. I finally have that one figured out, although I got honked at several times before I understood.
Sunday (9/8) Refraction and reflection
As I continued my exploration of the Wild Atlantic Way, now in Connemara, the weather app told me that it would be cloudy all day but unlikely to rain. So, naturally, most of the day was either sunny or raining, often in 10-15-minute intervals. I saw five rainbows—so many pots of gold. Four of them happened while I was driving, and so I was unable to get pictures except in my brain.
I saw the Connemara Giant! I took the Sky Road—beautiful, scary, and windy. I walked a trail along the delightful little Aasleagh Falls, checked out Connemara National Park, avoided the massive crowds at Kylemore Abbey by not stopping there, and drove on the sand flats connecting the mainland to Omey Island.
I was also in Leenaun, also called Leenane (many places here have multiple spellings, which makes programming the GPS challenging)—the site of Martin McDonagh's play, The Beauty Queen of Leenane.
Some things are universal—a young waiter saw me playing my daily Flow Free puzzles on my phone while waiting for my order and excitedly told me it was his favorite game. He was suitably impressed when I showed him that I had a 2,947-day daily streak, which made me feel good.
Some things are not universal. Many places here have multi-point locking door handles—to lock the door, you have to lift the handle and hold it up while turning the key. I have not seen these in the U.S., though I'm sure they exist, but they're very common here. The first time was in Scotland at our group residence, and none of us foreigners could figure out how to lock the door! At the B&Bs here in Ireland, many have instructions posted on the door.
One difference I love is the showers. Most showers in the U.S. have separate hot and cold water levers you turn on to mix or one lever you turn on and then continue until you find the correct temperature. Here, most showers have two levers - one for temperature and one for on/pressure. You basically never have to set the temperature because you leave that one at its ideal setting.
Finished the day back at Powers Thatch for Irish Beef and an Irish band.
Monday-Tuesday (9/9-10) In God's Pocket
After Oughterard, I headed up to Louisburgh (pronounced "Lewis-burg") for my next B&B (Cuaneen). It's quite a bit away from the heavy tourist spots (which suited me just fine), and I kind of fell in love with the region. Here are a few things I saw.
• Lough Inagh (Lough means "Lake") had a beautiful viewpoint, which was a peat bog. You could feel the springiness of the land and see peat being harvested.
• Amazing beaches - Silver Strand Beach, Old Head Beach, Carrowmore Beach (which I could also see from the window of my B&B), and Keem Beach - reached after a harrowing mountain drive through gorgeous Achill Island.
• The National Famine Memorial depicts a “coffin ship” with skeleton bodies in the rigging. "Coffin ships" was a term used to describe the horrendously overcrowded boats that left Irish shores with emigrants fleeing the famine in dire and unhygienic conditions. Crafted by John Behan, it commemorates the millions who perished during the Great Famine of 1845 – 52.
• Crough Patrick (meaning "[St.] Patrick's Stack") is seen as a holy mountain - St. Patrick is said to have spent 40 days fasting on the summit. It is climbed by thousands of pilgrims every year on Reek Sunday (a custom going back to the Middle Ages), and throughout the year, it's climbed by all sorts of people who just want to climb it. It's a steep ascent, so it's unsuitable for my leg.
• A statue honoring Grainne Mhaol (AKA Grace O'Malley, the Pirate Queen) in lovely Newport (nearby and one of my new favorite places). Grainne commanded a fleet of ships in the 1500s and showed consummate bravery as she defended her homeland by routinely facing off against the English forces trying to expand their control over Ireland.
Right across the street from The Pirate Queen is a pub named after her called Grainne Uaile. And it was here that I checked off another bucket-list item. I stopped in about 2 pm - nobody in the place - and ordered a Guinness and a toastie by the bar. While eating my sandwich, two old regulars came in (not together) and ordered pints. Having nothing else to do, the bartender sat down, and the regulars got loosened up telling stories. That's right! I was hanging out in an Irish Pub in the afternoon, hearing the old regulars tell stories. With the dialect and the speed of speech, I understood about 60-70% of what they said (including when they would turn to me to explain who Liam was and why it was important to know that he had already been banned from that particular pub). But I understood enough to nod and laugh at the correct moments. It was glorious!
The past two nights, I had supper at Gaffney's Seafood Restaurant. I had poached local Clare Island Salmon with shrimp and asparagus in a luscious cream sauce, mashed potatoes, homemade bread with olive tapenade, butternut squash soup, crispy calamari with chili sauce, and banoffee pie.
The tagline on the welcome sign of Louisburgh is "Relax. You're in God's pocket." At first, I chuckled, but then I came to appreciate it. It beats the notion of the Lord as a practically indentured servant who makes clutch free throws and catches touchdown passes. Here are people who have gone through incredible hardships throughout their history, and while their God doesn't intervene in all those things, they still feel the comfort of living in God's pocket as they see the beauty around them.
An echo rebounds
from these hallowed grounds,
sacred and most holy of wells.
From the cliffs of Mweelrea
to the mouth of the Killary,
into wild Atlantic swells.
Over grey stone walls
a lone whisper calls,
carried through barren fields.
Past unnamed headstones,
this tale still roams
around where Patrick once kneeled.
Famine bridge,
potato ridge,
the landscape still carries it on.
Memories told,
stories unfold,
local airs, poetry and song.
This is the dream
of Louisburgh-Killeen,
remembered often.
Pulling me back
to the familiar track,
never forgotten.
In wild green spaces,
people and places,
the mind begins to roam.
And whisper gives voice
to an unspoken choice:
the heart will always go home.
Light starts to fade,
casting its shade,
bringing a close to the day.
The salt of the earth,
the place of my birth,
God’s Pocket on the shores of Clew Bay.
