Hello my amazing friends !
Do you think giraffes make great flying paper boat captains ? How are their navigation skills ? Also, are giraffes able to use a compass or any other GPS system or do they just navigate by watching the stars ? So many questions, so little time !
Mucho, mucho amor for you all !!
Thank you so much for all your lovely comments / favs/ general support / happy thoughts!! Stay safe and well.
This building at Flamborough was built as a fog warning station going through various methods through the years.
Since 1998 it has also been used for the Differential Global Positioning System (enhanced GPS system)

Finished in 1906, the Eldred Rock Lighthouse sits in the Lynn Canal between Juneau and Skagway Alaska. It was automated in 1973 and is now unmanned.
When I see the Eldred Rock Lighthouse, it brings a feeling of loneliness. It sits miles from land on a small island in the cold dark waters of the Inside Passage. It's light once guided ships safely through the wild waters of Alaska, today, it's beacon still shines, but GPS systems have rendered the lighthouse obsolete. It makes me wish technology wasn't so advanced and that Alaska was still as wild and untamed as it was when the lighthouse was built.
...and the windiest and coldest today.
Have been planning to come here for days...glad l took a picnic and coat....and hat and warm socks and all my Artic survival gear...Flares, GPS System, St Bernard dog, a bottle of the Red stuff (only to be opened incase of emergencies.....like today.) Thank goodness it's still Summer or l could have frozen to death.

oBike, a dockless bike sharing service only started operating In Sydney on 14th August, 2017, and already I am seeing the bikes left in unexpected places, all around the Inner City.
The bikes have a built-in lock and GPS system and can therefore be left anywhere at the end of a journey, not just at a docking station. Users use a smartphone app to locate and hire bikes.

Me, the couch and remote control. Total relaxation!
What a great day!!!!! Sorry to disappoint with no travel shots...Tomorrow's another day. Car is all gassed up and ready to go. Gps system all charged. Can't wait to see where the wind blows me :)
The modern method of growing certain Winter crops is to sow then in the previous years stubble. The moisture is retained better and is possible because of the use of the GPS system. These Beans given good rains will rise above the straw and yield a good harvest.
I shouldn’t have parked in the Passing Place, but I did. The area was deserted and it was a very long passing place. I could park and still leave room for a couple of cars to pull in. Apart from the metallic red MG HS. Ha! Typical. Hire car. I feel sorry for the foreign tourists arriving at EdinBURG airport, being given an MG. Made in China. Yes, some tourists must have found this spot. Had the Subway sandwich wrapper just fallen out of the door when they went walking or was it thoughtlessly chucked at the side of the road, as some do?
I guessed they had been off into the forest, yet all the footprints I saw were pointed downhill, back to the road. I was surprised they had found this trail. Perhaps they were now lost. But Google and Google maps don’t leave much hidden. Although someone had tried to block off the start of the trail by cutting down, and laying three trees across the path and then thickened it into a greater obstacle with more loose branches.
Jeez, whoever it is, must be a messy eater. The small piece of lettuce showed up vibrantly against the decayed and frost tinged oak leaves on the forest floor at my feet. But not much more than about five yards on was a piece of sliced tomato, it’s bright red quite obvious on the trail. I was breathing a little bit more heavily now. I had my camera gear on my back, and curiously I was carrying everything I wouldn’t need. Heavy Manfrotto tripod. Long, telephoto lens, macro lens, standard lens, winter survival kit (haha!) and more. But the view up the gorge was stunning, along its steep edges. I kept going on up, following the fairly faint signs of human passage. Hey, now a bit of golden brown crust, tossed and lying on top of the brown, frosty leaves. Another five yards uphill was a piece of pink pork. Ham. Messy buggers. I wondered exactly what sort of people they were, most likely tourists I suspected. Locals would never contaminate their home territory. I suppose there was a fair chance I might discover they are German, after all, it seems well over 50% of our booked B&B guests for the coming season are German. We never had a bad bunch. In fact we had a lot of fun with most of them. But these people trashing the place?
I carried on, up through the trees, as the gorge deepened to my right. A few times I ventured to its edge, very wary of the snow and ice along the side particularly once I spotted a fairytale waterfall plunging off the top edge, straight to the bottom about 70 feet below me. Still I carried on. Effie stopped and indicated she could hear voices up the hill. Huh, another piece of bread, and then another. Unbelievable. I checked Google map. Yes, I was getting near. I was surprised it seemed accurate in such a remote area. I would have switched to What3Words, a GPS system, if Google hadn’t given me the right vibe.
I peered ahead through the trees. No sign of movement. Yet. I steeled myself for the meeting. What would they be like? Apart from being littering interlopers? I was noticing small bits of bread regularly along my way. Further up I had to duck under low branches, and step over fallen saplings. The snow had been knocked off the horizontal surfaces by passing bodies. Now the track curved round so I could not see far ahead, and then unexpectantly it flattened and headed downhill slightly. The trees were twisted and bent into spooky shapes. There was a series of waterfalls emerging from the forest, four of them in a stack up the hillside on my left water tumbling down and disappearing into a hollow ahead of me. And then, in a patch of sunlight, something stood out, stegosaurus-like with vertical plates on its back…..no, wait, a bridge. Magical. Small, a faerie bridge. Wow! Such a surprise, to discover it way up the hillside in a forest in the middle of nowhere. It’s so surreal. Bizarre. Incredible. Small birds, robins, tits, etc flitted in and out of the sunlight, attracted by the handful of bread crumbs on the humped back of the bridge
I got my camera out, eager to catch it in the light as it fell. I wanted to include the waterfalls, but with a tangle of branches and tree trunks it was hard to find a clear view. I ventured down the stream that flowed under the bridge, and almost bumped into the young couple sat on a rock, enjoying the atmosphere of the place, while they had a snack. Being me, I had to speak, and we quickly fell into conversation. I had been right: German! They asked me a lot about the area and Scotland and I answered as best I could and made up answers when my knowledge failed me. Somewhere in the conversation they managed to establish I owned a B&B and asked where it was and what it was called. They were able to look it up on Google as we chatted. And they said they might like to book. I explained that the house is called “Innes House” after my name. And it seemed natural to ask their names. I thought she said, “Greta” but she corrected me. “Gretel”. “Oh”, I said, and turning to the young man, I said, “Let me guess: you are Hans……ummmm Hansel???”
Driving from Toronto to West Virginia takes at least an hour more than your GPS system predicts. Because you have to stop and take photos
I found it...., the place where you can see Mt Fuji rising over the tea fields, it had eluded me for years, after a long google earth search I finally located the spot, the next challenge was getting there, finding a non-Japanese detailed map of the area is impossible, the rental car GPS system was able to navigate using a destination phone number, so I found the phone number of a dental clinic nearby, and then followed the google map detail to turn left and park, and walk up. It worked, except the mountain was covered in clouds, I waited about an hour, and this was the clearest view of the summit I got.
With a GPS-controlled tractor with attached planter, cabbage plants are planted in long rows in the large field. Sitting on the machine, two men place the root ball plants from the crates one by one into the machine, which then takes care of the actual planting. The photo was taken on a cloudy summer morning near the Dutch town of Prinsenbeek, municipality of Breda, province of North Brabant.

I could only find great shooting conditions just about everywhere I went in 2009. This is Hills Creek in WV with the lush July foliage and also a great water flow, which was quite a surprise since VA was very dry at this time. We had stopped by the area to see the orchids at the Cranberry Glades and also visited the falls.
If you are a waterfall photographer and would like to learn a system of navigation using Google Maps and Earth for plotting waterfall locations and the ability to share them easily without complicated directions then I can show you how. Finding a location or parking spot can be as easy as typing in the lat/long co-ordinates. I can even tell you how this information can be installed to some car GPS systems so no more using maps, a huge time and gas saver. I have been finding my way around for years now in this way. Write me if you would like to learn how, then we can share info by simply swapping numbers.
This is the most widespread ibis species, breeding in scattered sites in warm regions of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Atlantic and Caribbean regions of the Americas.
This species is migratory; most European birds winter in Africa, and in North America[6] birds from north of the Carolinas winter farther south.
Birds from other populations may disperse widely outside the breeding season. While generally declining in Europe, it has recently established a breeding colony in southern Spain, and there appears to be a growing trend for the Spanish birds to winter in Britain and Ireland, with at least 22 sightings in 2010. In 2014, a pair attempted to breed in Lincolnshire, the first such attempt in Britain. A few birds now spend most summers in Ireland, but there is no present evidence of breeding.
This species is a mid-sized ibis. It is 48–66 cm (19–26 in) long, averaging around 59.4 cm (23.4 in) with an 80–105 cm (31–41 in) wingspan. The culmen measures 9.7 to 14.4 cm (3.8 to 5.7 in) in length, each wing measures 24.8–30.6 cm (9.8–12.0 in), the tail is 9–11.2 cm (3.5–4.4 in) and the tarsus measures 6.8–11.3 cm (2.7–4.4 in). The body mass of this ibis can range from 485 to 970 g (1.069 to 2.138 lb).
Breeding adults have reddish-brown bodies and shiny bottle-green wings. Non-breeders and juveniles have duller bodies. This species has a brownish bill, dark facial skin bordered above and below in blue-grey (non-breeding) to cobalt blue (breeding), and red-brown legs. Unlike herons, ibises fly with necks outstretched, their flight being graceful and often in V formation. It also has shiny feathers.
This image was taken in the northern part of the Bay of Biscay. It was one of 2 birds that were about 60 miles off the coast of France and they both appeared to be heading north at the time. I was quite surprised to see them that far out to sea in part of the Atlantic Ocean. I was using a Canon GPS system at the time so the location should be quite accurate.

The bar-headed goose is one of the world's highest-flying birds . Every year thousands of these birds fly over the Himalayas to escape the harsh winter in their habitat in central asia ( Tibet , Mongolia )to spend the winter here in India . Even more interesting is the fact that some of these birds were collared 2 yrs ago in Magdi , near gadag . And the same birds have returned for the 2nd year in a row . Natures amazing GPS system !

About Westwood Plateau
WESTWOOD PLATEAU…Experiences Above & Beyond
When award-winning golf architect Michael Hurdzan, Golf World Magazine’s 1997 Architect of the Year, sets out to design a course he says that he wants to “create a ‘Wow’ effect for golfers.” At his Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club, named ‘Best New Course in Canada in 1996’ by SCOREGolf Magazine, Hurdzan created his patented “Wow” effect on virtually every hole.
As a result, there is no ‘signature’ hole at the spectacular layout on Eagle Mountain because each hole stands alone. Yet each hole bears Hurdzan’s distinctive signature. “This is a magical piece of ground,” said Hurdzan. “When we built the course, the whole intent was to keep the great views, keep the special ethereal feeling and still create as wide a course as we could so that the average golfer could enjoy it.” Hurdzan not only achieved his lofty goal, he exceeded it. On this magical Coquitlam plateau 30 minutes east and 1,300 feet above Vancouver, the golf values are as pure as the snow on the distant mountain peaks. Little wonder that in 1999, Golf Digest called Westwood Plateau: “The best game in town.”
Whether playing from the back tees at 6,770 yards or from any of the other three tee boxes that gradually shorten the course to 5,514 yards, players are confronted by a singular challenge on each hole – deciding whether the view is more striking from the tee or from the green. The ProShot GPS system on each power cart takes the pressure off club selection by displaying precise yardages on easy-to-read screens. It also provides yardages to the hazards; individual tips on playing the hole; updates on your tournament; and ProShot can quickly relay messages in case of emergencies. In addition to the on-cart GPS, you’ll also receive range balls, day locker, bottled water, tee gift, and continental breakfast included in your fees. Other available extras range from transportation via helicopter from downtown Vancouver to fully-stocked personal mini bars on your cart. These above and beyond services helped earn Westwood Plateau ‘5th Best Customer Service in North America’, as ranked by 6500 Golf Digest readers, and Golf Digest’s 4 1/2 - star rating in their Best Places to Play edition.
A fully public facility, Westwood Plateau offers 27 holes of outstanding golf, two distinct restaurants, a nationally recognized teaching academy and a 35,000 square foot clubhouse perfect for corporate entertaining and weddings.
Westwood Plateau’s mission statement is simple – To deliver Above & Beyond experiences through superior service and product quality! We look forward to serving you!

Such is countryside driving nowadays: most of the time, you don’t even bother to look at a road map, you just program your destination into the GPS system and go wherever the lady in the speakers tells you to go. And thus it was that, wandering leisurely through southern Burgundy on a late January afternoon, and patiently waiting to be taken back to the A6 freeway that would lead us home, we happened upon this memorable and truly unique sight: the Romanesque church in the village of Manlay in the département of the Côte-d’Or.
I have, of course, seen many fortified churches, in ruins or still standing, and I know what they were for: protection of the local populace towards the latter part of the Middle Ages, when a relatively peaceful era gave way to the countrywide Hundred Years War. However, I had never seen an édifice that looked almost entirely like a Mediæval castle, and only very secondarily like a church...! The way the scales tip here in favor of the fortification v. the religion is truly remarkable.
Dedicated to Saint Laurent (Lawrence), this late Romanesque church/castle was built, as expected, in the early 1300s —the war in Burgundy began in 1337 and ended only in 1430— and its walls are 1.8 meters thick. Apparently, it served its purpose well and survived that war and the subsequent Wars of Religion in the late 16th century, only to be burned down with the rest of the village by retreating Nazi troops in July 1944.
The sad fate of the church was brought in the 1950s to German Chancellor Adenauer’s attention by the parish priest, and Adenauer organized a fundraiser that produced 200,000 deutschemarks that were used in the early 1960s to fund the substantial restoration the church needed.
On the technical side, these three shots are noteworthy because, while they were taken with my usual and trusty 19mm tilt-shift lens, they were also taken handheld, as I was too lazy pressed for time (for fear that the great light would go away) to take the tripod out of the boot and set it up!
This is Fancy Nancy who is currently staying with one of the friends who journeyed with us to see Bacon's Castle. She's a saucy, sassy and wild child for sure! Here you see her bossy side as she attempts to override the GPS system. Up to any adventure and into and out of trouble, she has Anita beat by a country mile! She will Only eat hotdogs, is unwilling to listen to sound advice (hence a sunburn a few weeks back) and for sure she will make you laugh! Who can resist this sparkly, green eyed, freckle faced red haired imp?
Popularly referred to as Cañón de los Perdidos - Canyon of the Lost after some visitors got lost on their way to the canyon. There way there is a dirt road in the desert, with a couple of forks in it and no sign to indicate which of the two to take. You have to be familiar with the road or have a really good GPS system.
Give it an "L" to see the three people sitting on the side of the canyon below.

.. rolling around the sun in a giant circle between the white marble that is Venus, and the little red one that is Mars.. Seemingly eternally..
In reality, there's a lot going on in and on this little marble. They say the magnetic poles are getting ready to flip again, as they have many times in the past. Don't worry - you probably won't have to update the GPS system in your phone. It probably won't happen within the next thousand years or so. But just in case you're the kind that likes to plan ahead, I guess they thought they'd let us know.. Duly noted!
They say the earth's core is solid iron, surrounded by a layer of liquid iron, and it's the friction between the solid core and the liquid outer layer that creates the magnetic field that surrounds and protects us from harmful solar radiation. Quite a stroke of luck, I'd say....
I like to think of pubs as an early GPS system. When someone said 'Do you know where ABC is'? The answer often came back in pub code...'Yes, turn right at The Wonky Lamb, follow the road to The Bent Judge, over the bridge, until you get to the Humping Bull and it's there, right in front of you'!!
Anyways, here we are at our destination, The Albanach on The Royal Mile, Edinburgh. As far as I can tell, the name means Scotsman.

Scott is the person who spotted Tidda on the island and posted it on Facebook, which led to her rescue. He was in an RV, not in a log cabin as I misunderstood before. At the time of the rescue, the water level was a bit lower. The distance between Scott's location and the island is a little over 1000 feet (305 m). For reference, the Eiffel Tower is 1063 feet tall.
I checked the tide tables and discovered that there were particularly low tides right around the time she had tried to run across the bridge. I think that is the only time when it would have been possible for her to walk across to the island, so she had been stuck there for two and a half weeks!
She is very happy to be home and is eating enthusiastically! I'm not letting her off the leash until the GPS system for the collar arrives.
Thank you everyone for your support through this difficult time!
Right on target on the first day of fall, (Sept 23), the geese starting appearing in their V formations heading south. This is taken from the deck where a dozen or more streams have already passed overhead this morning as the sun breaks through the fog.
The noise of their honking is amazingly loud. It would seem that wasting energy honking doesn't make sense for a flock of geese who have so far to travel, but apparently it's a critical part of the process. The constant flow of chatter is intended to encourage those up front, and to suggest or acknowledge various changes of direction or flight plans and likely landing spots. Much like the honking GPS systems that human snow birds rely on to navigate their way south, I guess. (And it only took us a couple of centuries to invent our weak imitation!)
I also read that when one goose gets sick or is hit by gunshot, two other geese accompany it to the ground and stay with it until it recovers or dies and only then take off to join another formation - honking all the while to alert the new group that they're coming.
It seems to me that whoever came up with the expression "bird brain" to indicate low intelligence was way off the mark!
By the way, the foam in the water comes from the tidal generation plant on the Annapolis River which is just a little upstream from this spot. As the gates are raised or lowered, the water forms a very rapid falls which generates lots of natural foam. This is one of only two places in North America where electricity is generated by the tide.
Iron-Spider: Jonathan "Johnny" Storm" had a regular life and grew up with his sister Sue, as well as attending Midtown High School. On a science field trip to Oscorp, he was bitten by a radioactive spider after accidentally pushing Peter Parker, his best friend. He developed spider like powers and put them two use. Soon his sister found out, but decided to keep it a secret.
When he grew up, Johnny, along with Sue, was invited to Dr. Reed Richards' space program, which was both of their lifelong dreams after signing up then got applied. Sue, at the last moment, declined as she didn't really feel well and she told Johnny to go instead, making sure he would help snap photos for her.
Unfortunately, the ship was bombarded with cosmic rays and the ship crashed. When Johnny woke up, he was further mutated with the powers of fire and the ability to fly.
Johnny's family subsequently became poor, and after the divorce of their parents, Johnny decided to earn money by participating in illegal street car and motorcycle racing. However, Robbie Reyes and Johnathon Blaze helped him get back on track, where they hired him into the B/R Racing Company. He was successful at first, but when the company was losing racers and stocks, and Johnny quit. With almost out of options, his sister helped him to get a job at the Daily Bugle, which reignited new hope into him, becoming a photographer there, as well as a occasional mechanic.
Soon, he was starting to take photos at Stark Industries, but when his crew was trying to do an interview with Happy Hogan, chief of security, an explosion happened, injuring many people. Although he couldn't save everyone (except some people and Happy, who lived) Johnny found the remnants of an armour, and decided to put it on with his custom suit, built with the help of Peter Parker. He would start becoming Iron-Spider and protecting the city.
Age: at least 23-24 right now.
Powers: Johnny Storm can turn his body into fire, shoot fire projectiles, control flames, and has the ability to fly. He also has powers of super strength, durability, crawling/scaling walls, super stamina, spider-senses, enhanced immunity to poison, his own fire, drugs and etc.
His suit is built in with web shooters, web cartridges, a GPS system, water proof system, repulsor chest communications infolink and etc. Johnny is also skilled in mechanics, stunts, hand to hand combat, photography and driving.
Weaknesses: Water, spider sense disrupted, not having the full set of Iron Man armor, which lacks the repulsors on his hands, rockets, missiles, lasers and many stuff. Extinguishing him will cause him to lose his fire powers. He is yet to turn into plasma form or being able to use his nova flame.
A saturday summer full moon night at Vaux-Le-Vicomte, a Baroque castle near Paris, built in mid-17th-century for Nicolas Fouquet, the superintendent of finances of Louis XIV.
Each saturday during summer period, all the castle and its amazing gardens are enlightened by hundreds of candles, producing an incredible ambiance.
When I start shooting, I realized that I forgot my memory card at home. I just took the camera and 1 more lens, without taking the whole photobag with gears and backup memory cards.
I tried to find one at the castle shop, with no success...
I was really disappointed and ready to give up when I finally realized that the GPS system in my car is using a SD Card. A quick format, and I finally start shooting. Lucky man !
I had to wait until the very last visitor left the site to take this picture

Two of the best days during our recent California trip....meeting and spending time with two Flickr contacts...what a privilege !!!
The trip to Santa Cruz was complicated by our new GPS system...sending us on a long and incorrect path, in driving rain, through a beautiful and scary redwood forest preserve...and cutting short our time with our wonderful hostess...a supremely good bird photographer...such an interesting person!!!
I was intrigued by the simple beauty of the dining area in her house... with the textured walls of gold...and the curves and shadows of the bentwood chairs....
and then by the vision of this beautiful camellia in her garden.
As well as being a fine photographer, my contact is a music broadcaster on public radio, and a professional gardener. Tomorrow, I'll post photos from our visit to one of my contact's favourite birdwatching areas.
Had a great day gallery-hopping with eiichi-scart and falsalama. Started out with udon for lunch, got a little side-tracked by a confused GPS system, and finished with a vegetarian dinner. Thanks for taking me around guys :)

While basking in the peace and quiet at our humble seaside retreat, we try not to venture further than the ocean, a few steps away from our recliners. However, it is with reading material in our lounging position, I admit, we get tempted to visit other stimulating destinations in our favorite state of Maine.
And so it was I got *pumped up* reading an article about Winslow Homer's summer studio in Prout's Neck, not too far from our own little artist's cottage! Well, Homer's relatives must pay the GPS system not to help tourists find their way, so we relied on the old-fashioned "map" to get there. More on this to come . . .
Meanwhile . . . I hate to admit I did think of "Fence Friday" when I shot this! But quickly I was transported to another place in my mind as I envisioned Homer walking this exquisite "Cliff Walk" for his own inspiration.

“I believe talent is like electricity. We don't understand electricity. We use it.
You can plug into it and light up a lamp, keep a heart pump going, light a cathedral,
or you can electrocute a person with it. Electricity will do all that.

So...my brother, while getting me great gifts, is a bit of a prankster when it comes to wrapping them...Well...this was this year's.
It came in this box...with the red bag that the hazardous materials are supposed to be deposed in...and then...the gift. The gift was in the red back, under a sea of confetti and the box it was in was covered in...industrial strength foam. The type commonly used for insulation...
Yep.
That's my brother. And of course, the goggles, mask, and gloves were all included.
Feel free to offer ideas for payback on his birthday which is in February. But, if you are to do it, please send me a private flickrmail in case he looks at this photo.
But, the gift was great and it was easier to get to than last years, so I'm happy.
Not to mention that it gives me a GREAT 365.
And for those who have been wondering...the gift was a GPS system. Which I needed so it was worth it :P
