As I finished up a meeting at the Alviso Environmental Education Center (EEC) there were a couple of hours of daylight left in the short December afternoon. There were so many birds around the EEC that I decided not to fly a kite there. Instead, I headed up to to Salt Pond A23 just north of Drawbridge. My last visit there in September found the pond essentially dry and sporting an interesting palette of colors and textures. I was curious about how it looked now that our winter rains have arrived.

It was an interesting KAP session. The winds were low (measured at 3.5 – 4.5 mph at the ground using a Kestrel anemometer) and the water surface was still. For some reason I thought the winds might fill in a bit and launched my 7.5-foot Rokkaku. This newly-sewn kite was able to lift the dSLR rig but only by a small margin. I spent the next hour or so as the sun set walking up and down the levee with my gear just barely floating above the 25% saline water. While slight the winds were smooth and it all worked out just fine.

This was my first flight using an airborne GPS system to log coordinates that were later used to geotag the photographs. The map position for each image was thus produced by an automated workflow. Neat.

I have a new respect for and fear of this part of a storm.

Thursday night I was driving south on Interstate 29. This wall cloud seemed so far away, and although I wasn't trying to outrun it, I did think there was a good chance I would get south of it before it intersected the freeway. Plus I thought if I got into it it would just be heavy rain. No such luck, and this is a much more dangerous scene than I thought.

Shortly after I took this photo I was hit with a huge burst of wind and rain. The trailer on the semi ahead of me was blown sideways. (the semi and I had hit the wall at the worst possible time - at the top of a small bridge - a high point in the flat surrounding area) I was completely blinded for a few seconds. I slowed way down, but I was afraid to be too extreme because there was traffic behind me, and I didn't want to get hit.

When I could see again the semi was on its side. I pulled around him and stopped and tried to call 911, but my hands were shaking so badly that it took me at least 5 tries, and when i finally dialed right I got a busy signal! I finally did reach the dispatcher. Thank God for GPS systems, so I could tell them where we were. Many cars drove by, but I assume they at least called for help for the guy. The whole time I was on the phone with the dispatcher I could hear tornado sirens blaring over the phone.

I couldn't get out to check on the man, because the lightning was constant. Eventually several more cars stopped, and when the weather cleared a little bit several men went over and pulled the guy out. He seemed to be supporting himelf, so I feel hopeful that he came through it all okay. I decided to head on since he had at least 10 people with him. On the way down the road I counted 5 emergency vehicles on their way to the spot.

If I were reading this with someone else's photo, I'd be thinking "GOOD GOD WOMAN! WHAT WERE YOU DOING DRIVING INTO THAT??", but honestly, there were a bazillion other cars on the road at the time, and we all were equally ignorant of the situation. I learned the next day that the front edge of a wall cloud is one of the most dangerous parts. (I think the back edge is the worst - that's where the tornadoes develop) Oh. I wonder how I lived in the midwet for 42 years without learning that important tidbit of information.

I will always avoid this situation in the future. It was so "okay" one second, and so bad the next.

I've always been afraid of severe storms, and I think this was a lesson from God on one additional thing to be wary of.

Now we have the phone with speed dial, we can order in a fresh delivery guy whenever we get the munchy hunger! (which is quite often!, after all, we all eat the lion's share!)

Will the pizza be as nice as the delivery guy?

Can hardly wait!

P1270605 - WTN White Tail Navigation, Zeke the navigator, he knowns these and another three woods better than I know the back of my own hand and certainly the camera. As the daylight hours reduce towards the Winter Solstice. Zeke's white tail and ruff occasionally are the best thing to follow as dusk arrives or in the early morning.

The navigation unit includes personalisation and produces audible tones to inform you of various dangers and impending water ahead. Currently fitted with four modes of personalisation; Dad mode includes offering alternative B class roads and wandering aimlessly around, Mum mode includes I'll try and stay on the path unless something distracts me, Son mode; I'll follow additional instructions as long as it includes stick throwing, daughter mode; she'll just have to follow me, because she has no idea and I get extended walks :)

The Rusty model has only two woods built in, but appears to be the more popular of the two, however, the return to path mode is faulty.

We're going on holiday ... a credit crunch holiday to Devon at that. I suspected something was afoot when all the bags were dragged out Friday morning accompanied by the inevitable pre-holiday shouting about packing responsibility. I just put my headphones on and let them duke it out while I assembled the standard Wibbly away kit.

So, owing to the guys thriftiness they decided that rather than invest in anything as lavish as sat nav that this year, they'd instead rely on maps. Chuff that.

There's a sat nav service in these parts called Tom Tom (its a pretty arbitrary epithet for a GPS system, but you know how these pan-european naming systems go, if they make sense in any language they have to invent an even more bizarre name). Well, i've invented Wib Wib. Its pretty rudimentary at the moment but I have a whole pad of post-it notes to extend it.

thanks to the asshole who broke into my car this morning and stole nothing. you caused me to drive home 2 and a half hours in the cold being blasted by wind on the highway, you made me miss work, and you made me spend money that i certainly didn't have. ... and what did you get? a piece of plastic that holds a gps system. great.

If there ever is an upgrade or a fully loaded vehicle over here, it would be this one. Fully Loaded, and equipped with red police light w/siren. Also, has 2 spot lights and a canvas cover (not convertible). Even has a built in GPS system. WOW! Additionally, an exclusive bumper for those occasions that you may need it, for whatever reason. I call this the SXT one. Although, it's not my Jeep, still......

View from my hotel room at Port de Soller. Found it from a guidebook (DK Top 10 Mallorca) that lists a set of "Seaside Charmer" hotels. This is the cheapest (35 euros) one that has a few rooms with fantastic views. It took me a while to find the hotel, but I did get the room with a great view! (Actually finding it on map was easy, but driving to it took a while. The tiny town of about 1000m x 300m, is split by a river, and there is no way for a car to travel from "port side" of the town to the "beach side" of town unless you go back to the bigger town Soller 3km away to make another approach. I drove my car's GPS system crazy to locate this hotel.)

Self-portrait of me capturing photo of car GPS system near D'Arcy, Saskatchewan.

Rural Municipality of Kindersley in August 2009.

When taking photos in rural locations I now also take a photo of the GPS display. I use a website to convert the degree/second numbers into decimal and then copy those numbers into my Flickr pics taken at the same location.

I have come to realize that distance, like many other things, is a relative concept in Mongolia. The Mongolian GPS system (Ger Positioning System – you stop at a ger, drink some tea, and ask how to get where you want to go – never fails, and never runs out of batteries) works great when it comes to getting directions for a place (“yeah, cross this range of mountains, and then follow not that valley, but the next, until you see two mountain tops clearly, then turn left” or “cross the river, pass on the right side of the forested mountain, but to the left of the small mountain, then turn right and follow that river and that’s the valley you’re looking for”) but NOT for distances.

Thirty kilometers can mean anything, but it very rarely means thirty kilometers as the bird flies. Or any other thirty kilometers. It can mean not too far, but further than you’d want to walk in a day. You can have someone tell you it’s thirty kilometer, ride for four hours, and still have thirty kilometers to go…

Somewhere on Cambridge Street last weekend. About 10 minutes later we had to call my GPS system (read: my mom) because we were lost lost lost and without a map. PS: You can buy t-shirts from this place.

Watching & researching Trucking GPS systems online. We're having a lay over this weekend, my first in a very very long time so between me working on personal projects & watching movies, we're making use of time.. Downtime on the road like this does happen & I'd much prefer to be home relaxing but it's all apart of the industry, the good & bad.. Make the best of your time by catching up on laundry, exercising, reading, keeping in touch with family & friends that you haven't spoken with or seen in a while, etc.. #truckersjourney #truckinglife #truckerslife #trucking #roadlife #reality #instalife #instagram #iphone4s

I took this in the Medina in Fès, Morocco. Navigating the Medina there is an adventure in itself. You should have one of the following:

a) A very good sense of direction

b) A reliable local guide

c) A GPS system

d) A very big ball of string to unravel behind you

You could easily get lost and wander for weeks if you're not careful. It's vast in scale and a veritable labyrinth.

Generally, taking portraits in Morocco was problematic, since there is the strongest cultural aversion to being photographed of any country I've ever visited.

However, there were notable exceptions and this distinguished gentleman was very gracious indeed.

You can see other pics (including some other portraits...not least one of the scariest cat on the planet) from this trip in my Morocco set.

Neat.

I rented a Garmin GPS system along with my rental from Enterprise Rent-A-Car. This was a lifesaver since I was unfamiliar with the area I was going to drive around in. An extra $8/day additional on top of the rental was way worth it.
