I took so many shots of this little fella (and they are surprisingly small), not sure which ones to keep. Loads have toes and tail tips missing, as so often is the case when your subject is so close, at least that should make thinning them out a bit easier...
A portrait shot of the glossy ibis that has taken up residency in Slimbridge village on land belonging to the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust.
PLegadis falcinellus , a water bird about 20 inches tall. This one is at CBBR. It is breeding, indicated by the bluish feathers around the distinctive beak.

It's taken ten days to get a close up shot of this little fella, and he's not in the slightest bit glossy... I don't know if that's all the egret poo, his age, the total lack of sun today or what... :@(

A little info on this wonderful bird. Glossy Ibises look uniformly dark, but a close look in good light reveals stunning colors: deep maroon, emerald, bronze, and violet. This long-legged, long-billed bird forages in flocks through wetlands and wet agricultural fields searching for insects, small fish, and seeds. The birds are somewhat nomadic, dispersing widely after the nesting season—a tendency that has aided the species in the past 100 years as it has expanded its range from the southeastern U.S. to include much of eastern North America.

A Glossy Ibis stretching her mouth while perched on top a large Juniper bush. What a fun day we had at the OCNJ Rookery on Sunday. The Herons, Egrets, and other Waders were in abundance and eager to be photographed. Please view large for best Glossy Ibis experience. :)
