Patterns beneath our feet

The next four pattern photos were all taken in Perth city centre. I was heading in for coffee with a friend, so I left about 15 minutes early to look for some photo opps.

So, a challenge and a time constraint… and a lens constraint – only using my 14mm.

My first shot was the patterns in these cobbles. I think they are mesmerising.

Tutorial on Instructables: www.instructables.com/id/Functional-LEGO-Nutcrackers/

With a simple pull of the lever, these decorative figures can open and close their jaws like authentic nutcrackers!

Both of these models were built in the recent weeks leading up to Christmas. The design was pretty straightforward, but two major issues were making the faces look good, and finally getting the hats right. In fact, the green nutcracker's crown took the longest to figure out, and was finally made with hinge plates.

As mentioned in the tutorial, although these can in fact function as real nutcrackers, they're somewhat rickety and best suited for holiday decorations.

I was looking for a way to do 2-wide, fully functional train doors which would be generic enough to allow for all sorts of shapes and colors. Furthermore, it had to remain as thin and elegant as possible - it's supposed to open the view to the interior of a car, not clutter it with odd support structures :-)

I borrowed the design of the hinge from the EN passenger car's door; the whole trick was to make it work anywhere on the car body, not just on its corners, by recessing the section above and below the hinge by one plate so that it doesn't interfere with the door when it swings open.

Shown above is an example of how this technique could be used for classic passenger cars with their numerous compartment doors and narrow windows.

An entry into the Castle Siege category of the Colossal Castle Contest. This year I'm basing most of my CCC entries on The Peleg Chronicles book series. The layered landscape was inspired by Dubbadgrim and Brother Steven. I wanted to try doing a rounded tower and wall with sloped base while using a SNOT tile wall design, and I'm pretty happy with the result. I don't think this boat will win any beauty contests, but here is the new Algoma Innovator downbound at Mission Point, taken from Sugar Island.

The "The Gables" has a beautiful, light filled entrance hall painted in white. It has a high ceiling featuring Art Nouveau mouldings and a gallery of windows featuring Art Nouveau stained glass of stylised flowers or fruit. The front door glass panels feature the quote made quite popular at the time by Australian soprano Nellie Melba "east, west, home's best.".

"The Gables" is a substantial villa that sits proudly on leafy Finch Street in the exclusive inner city suburb of East Malvern.

Built in 1902 for local property developer Lawrence Alfred Birchnell and his wife Annie, "The Gables" is considered to be one of the most prominent houses in the Gascoigne Estate. The house was designed by Melbourne architect firm Ussher and Kemp in what was the prevailing style of the time, Queen Anne, which is also known as Federation style (named so after Australian Federation in 1901). Ussher and Kemp were renowned for their beautiful and complex Queen Anne houses and they designed at least six other houses in Finch Street alone. "The Gables" remained a private residence for many years. When Lawrence Birchnell sold it, the house was converted into a rooming house. It remained so throughout the tumultuous 1920s until 1930 when it was sold again. The new owners converted "The Gables" into a reception hall for hire for private functions. The first wedding reception was a breakfast held in the formal dining room in 1930, followed by dancing to Melbourne’s first jukebox in the upstairs rooms. Notorious Melbourne gangster Joseph Theodore Leslie "Squizzy" Taylor was reputed to have thrown a twenty-first birthday party for his girlfriend of the day in the main ballroom (what had originally been the house's billiards room). "The Gables" became very famous for its grand birthday parties throughout the 1930s and 1940s. With its easy proximity to the Caulfield Race Course, "The Gables" ran an underground speakeasy and gambling room upstairs and sold beer from the back door during Melbourne’s restrictive era of alcohol not sold after six o'clock at night. Throughout its history, "The Gables" has been a Melbourne icon, celebrating generation after generation of Melbourne’s wedding receptions, parties and balls. Lovingly restored, the atmosphere and charm of "The Gables" have been retained for the future generations.

Grand in its proportions, "The Gables" is a sprawling villa that is built of red brick, but its main feature, as the name suggests, is its many ornamented gables. The front façade is dominated by six different sized gables, each supported by ornamental Art Nouveau influenced timber brackets. The front and side of the house is skirted by a wide verandah decorated with wooden balustrades and rounded fretwork. "The Gables" features two grand bay windows and three other large sets of windows along the front facade, all of which feature beautiful and delicate Art Nouveau stained glass of stylised flowers or fruit. Impressive Art Nouveau stained glass windows can also be found around the entrance, which features the quote made quite popular at the time by Australian soprano Nellie Melba "east, west, home's best." Art Nouveau stained glass can be found in all of the principal rooms of the house; both upstairs and down. “The Gables” also features distinctive chimneys and the classic Queen Anne high pitched gable roofs with decorative barge-boards, terra-cotta tiles and ornate capping.

As a result of Federation in 1901, it was not unusual to find Australian flora and fauna celebrated in architecture. This is true of "The Gables", which features intricate plaster work and leadlight throughout the mansion showing off Australian gum leaves and flowers. "The Gables" has fifteen beautifully renovated rooms, many of which are traditionally decorated, including beautiful chandeliers, ornate restored wood and tile fireplaces, leadlight windows, parquetry flooring, sixteen foot ceilings and a sweeping staircase. The drawing room still also features the original leadlight conservatory "The Gables" boasted when it was first built.

"The Gables", set on an acre of land, still retains many of the original trees, including the original hedge and two enormous cypress trees in the front. The garden was designed by William Guilfoyle, the master landscape architect of the Royal Botanical Gardens, and "The Gables" still retains much of it original structure. It features a rose-covered gazebo, a pond and fountain, as well as the tallest Norfolk Island pine in the area, which can be seen from some of the tallest skyscrapers in the Melbourne CBD.

Henry Hardie Kemp was born in Lancashire in 1859 and designed many other fine homes around Melbourne, particularly in Kew, including his own home “Held Lawn” (1913). He also designed the APA Building in Elizabeth Street in 1889 (demolished in 1980) and the Melbourne Assembly Hall on Collins Street between 1914 and 1915. He died in Melbourne in 1946.

Beverley Ussher was born in Melbourne in 1868 and designed homes and commercial buildings around Melbourne, as well as homes in the country. He designed "Milliara" (John Whiting house) in Toorak, in 1895 (since demolished) and "Blackwood Homestead" in Western Australia. He died in 1908.

Beverley Ussher and Henry Kemp formed a partnership in 1899, which lasted until Beverley's death in 1908. Their last building design together was the Professional Chambers building in Collins Street in 1908. Both men had strong Arts and Crafts commitments, and both had been in partnerships before forming their own. The practice specialised in domestic work and their houses epitomize the Marseilles-tiled Queen Anne Federation style houses characteristic of Melbourne, and considered now to be a truly distinctive Australian genre. Their designs use red bricks, terracotta tiles and casement windows, avoid applied ornamentation and develop substantial timber details. The picturesque character of the houses results from a conscious attempt to express externally with gables, dormers, bays, roof axes, and chimneys, the functional variety of rooms within. The iconic Federation houses by Beverley Ussher and Henry Kemp did not appear until 1892-4. Then, several of those appeared in Malvern, Canterbury and Kew.

Queen Anne style was mostly a residential style inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement in England, but also encompassed some of the more stylised elements of Art Nouveau, which gave it an more decorative look. Queen Anne style was most popular around the time of Federation. With complex roofline structures and undulating facades, many Queen Anne houses fell out of fashion at the beginning of the modern era, and were demolished.

Lasar Globa Park is the oldest park in our city. Geographically and functionally it resembles Central Park in New York, only many times smaller. A green oasis having area of several hectares is located among the densely built downtown. It is located in the center of business activity, and has always been used for festivities and social events.

The park was laid by Lazar Globa, a retired Zaporizhzhia Yesaul at the end of the 18th century. After Count Potiomkin has bought his upper estate on one of the hills (now Shevchenko Park), Globa moved to his lower estate where an orchard grew. Globa has died (presumably in 1793) and was buried here. His grave was lost over time. In the middle of the 19th century, a stone obelisk was allegedly erected at the place of his burial, but over time, this monument has also disappeared. Only in 1972, a new monument was erected at the likely burial site: an old Cossack planting a small oak tree). A real two-hundred-year-old oak tree is spreading its branches over it.

In 1795, Globa's heirs have sold his lower estate to a cloth factory which owned it for about ten years and left it in a complete disrepair. In 1805, at the behest of Emperor Alexander I, the former orchard has been given "for the establishment of plantations of mulberry, sweet and bitter chestnuts, acacias, Italian sapwood and some American trees that quickly grow and the local climate is also characteristic of fruit trees of the best genera." So, the former Globa's garden was transformed into the State Botanical Gardenin in 1807. Gardener Adam Hummel who also led the garden for almost forty years. was Its creator.

In the first half of the 19th century, the State Garden was a landmark of Yekaterinoslav. It occupied a plot of about 40 acres. Decorative and fruit trees were growg there. In addition to trees, it had extensive vegetable gardens and greenhouses, a vineyard, an establishment for breeding silkworms and a nursery of fruit and forest trees, shrubs, fodder and vegetable herbs. This educational institution trained specialists in gardening and horticulture.

After Hummel's death in 1848, the State Garden boasted 31,000 fruit and 193,000 forest trees, 23,000 shrubs, 569 varieties of flower and greenhouse plants, 71 varieties of garden plants and 27 varieties of commercial, medicinal, oilseed and dye plants. Soon all this wealth began to rapidly decline. The School of Horticulture was abolished in 1858. At the same time, the territory of the State Garden was divided into two parts: the City and Technical Gardens. The City Garden became open to the public and the Technical Garden was rented out still housing experimental plots and greenhouses.

In the second half of the 19th century, the city came close to the garden. Gradually, all plots facing the main city streets were passed into private ownership. In the 1860s and 70s, a Catholic church and a Lutheran church were built on the plots along Ekaterininsky Ave. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Winter Theater, now known as the Gorky Theaterwas has been built. Not far from the theater, the School of the Society for the Care of Women's Education built and then rebuilt in Soviet times into the House of Unions. In 1904, a summer theater building has appeared on the territory of the City Garden.

From July 1 to September 25, 1910, South Russian Regional Industrial, Agricultural and Handicraft Exhibition was held in the City Garden. The event covered the whole economic region: Yekaterinoslav, Poltava, Tauride, Kharkov, Kherson provinces, the regions of the Donskoy army and the troops of the Kuban Cossacks. There were exhibits from other provinces of the Russian Empire and from Western European countries. The exhibition was a great success. The whole garden was built up with extensive pavilions. The last surviving pavilions (The Summe Pavillionr and others) were dismantled in the late 1980s.

After the revolution, the City and Technical Gardens were again combined into one park. In 1924-30, it was overhauled, replanned and landscaped, and the park itself was called the Park of Culture and Leisure. It has cut the park in half and passed over its territory along a specially built bridge across the park lake. In the 1930s, the park changed its name several times: first Athletes' Garden, then Park named after Khatayevich. The head of the local communists, Mendel Khatayevich, was soon arrested and shot as an "enemy of the people", and the park was named after the deceased pilot Valery Chkalov in 1939.

As a monument of the Stalin era, the children's railway called The Small Stalinskaya Children's Railway was opened in the park on July 6, 1936 covering the entire park territory and having length of 2 kilometers. Immediately after the city liberation in 1943,, restoration work began in the park. In 1949, a new central entrance was built in Stalinist Empire style. It was decorated with symbols of the Soviet era and the Victory: stars and reliefs images with soldier figures. The entrance to the park is an interesting monument of rhe bygone era. In 1957, a monument to pilot Valery Chkalov was erected in the park which was replaced by bronze one.in 1981./There were also plaster statues of workers and collective farmers, athletes and sportswomen in the old park, which have not survived to this day.

After the war, an interesting statue of Samson tearing the lion's mouth appeared on the park lake. It was towering in the middle of the lake on an artificial hill of stones and a strong jet of water was throwing out of the lion's mouth. "Samson" became almost the main attraction of the park and was depicted in photographs and postcards of the 1950s and 60s. After 1974, the sculpture disappeared without a trace. Only in the early 2000s, a fountain with a sculpture The Little Prince hsd appeared on the place of Samson.

Throughout the second half of the 20th century, festivals and exhibitions were constantly held in the park. e.g., Regional agricultural exhibitions since the 1950s and Regional exhibitions of rabbit breeding since 1957. Annual Festivals of Flowers have also left a pleasant impression. Summer theater was built on the park's lake In 1952 and pavilion Dniprovsky Dawns -for exhibitions and dances was built In 1964. A stage has appeared In 1974 -1978 iin the old building of the summer theater and then a new one was built which became the hallmark of the park for many years

In 1992, the park was named after the Zaporizhshia Cossack Lazar Globa and the park has acquired a new status: Central Children's Park 6 years later but still it serves as entertainment for citizens of all ages.

I saw a bird of prey fly in for the kill yesterday. No, it wasn't a falcon or a Sparrowhawk - it was a heron. It was after a juvenile Moorhen, and despite getting hold of it in its bill and drawing blood, the Moorhen escaped and seemed to be functional despite its ordeal. Over the previous few weeks, I´ve created a large number of LEGO models based on real vehicles of the Chinese Armed Forces. This is the last MOC, the first Chinese Aircraft Carrier, CV-16 Liaoning.

The model is equipped with a large number of functionalities such as moving radar, moving elevators, hangar, defensive weapons and many other things.

I took a lot of time to make a Youtube video explaining the model in detail so please, don´t forget to watch it here and subscribe!

Walking up the driveway last night (8:30) at the end of the evening dog walk, Cole & I were buzzed by a large UFO. It landed in one of our magnolia trees and stayed put for half an hour, giving me lots of time to grab the camera. I also was able to use a tape measure to confirm that the wingspan was 15 cm/6 inches across! (The surrounding leaves are @ 2" long)

The Cecropia Moth (Hyalophora cecropia) is North America's largest native moth. It is a member of the Saturniidae family, or giant silk moths. Females with a wingspan of six inches (160 mm) or more have been documented. The larvae of these moths are most commonly found on maple trees, but they have been known to feed on cherry and birch trees. Like all members of the Giant Silk Moth family, the nocturnal adult cecropia moths only reproduce, lacking functional mouthparts or digestive system. Therefore, they survive a maximum of about two weeks. With less prominent feathery antennae, I believe that this is a female.

Bridge crest lights: non-functional.
