CA 108 by Soda Creek, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Mono County, CA, 10/15/2007

At an elevation of 9,624 feet Sonora Pass, which is traversed by CA 108 is the second-highest highway pass in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range of California. This pass connects the communities of Sonora to the west and Bridgeport to the east. I found the scene depicted in this photograph a short distance east of the pass, near Soda Creek (possibly also known as Sardine Creek) in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The old Sierra juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) seen at the left caught my eye from the road, and looked especially good in the late afternoon sunlight on this autumn day. Junipers were a very important resource to the Native Americans. The berries were used in foods and drinks, and the wood and bark were utilized as building materials and in tools such as bows. Native Americans have even used juniper as a treatment for diabetes! Like the better known and more frequently traveled Tioga Pass (the highest highway pass in the Sierra Nevada) to the south, Sonora Pass abounds with old growth trees, beauty, and High Sierra views.

This was to be a day of changeable weather in Yosemite Valley. Here is a view of El Capitan from the forest by Southside Drive about a half hour after sunrise. The sun was gleaming and the clouds and fog were clearing. By late morning the sky would completely cloud over again and produce heavy rain that threatened to go on for days. By mid-afternoon the rain would stop, the sun would reemerge, and the clouds and fog would clear once more! Although challenging to predict and work with, "bad" weather produces some of the best photographic opportunities. I'm especially fond of the juxtaposition of the ephemeral and vanishing fog with the ageless and enduring El Capitan. El Capitan is the largest exposed granite face in the world, and rises 3,600 feet above the valley floor. The formation was named by the Mariposa Battalion when it explored the Yosemite valley in 1851. El Capitan ("the captain" or "the chief") was a loose Spanish translation of the local Native American name for the cliff.

"The Alpine A310 is a sports car built by French manufacturer Alpine, from 1971 to 1984."
"Dieppe-based Alpine, once an independent company specialising in faster Renaults, later a Renault subsidiary, established a fine competition history with the Alpine A110 winning the 1973 Monte Carlo Rally and World Rally Championship.
The successor was the Alpine A310, initially powered by tuned 17TS/Gordini four-cylinder engine, still rear-mounted. The maximum power reaches 127 PS (93 kW; 125 hp), thanks to the use of two twin-barrel 45 DCOE Weber carburetors.

When it comes to Lego and speedlites bitrot is THE MAN. O.K. one of my all time favorites also comes from krigett kreations. That said I am having a Lego revival recently as Prozac05 started to play with "small lego" (having used Duplo before). So I am on the one hand side pretty proud of my self created 8 wheel, 6 cylinders hotrod and on the other hand I took the opportunity to mess around a little with my new speedlite.

On a sunny afternoon in early spring, I explored Elkhorn Plain in California’s Carrizo Plain National Monument. The previous winter’s heavy rains had brought forth a rare super bloom of wildflowers throughout the state, and as I drove along Elkhorn Road, I realized I was in Bloom Central! In this remote flowery paradise, a text message arrived from my best friend, Kai Gorbahn, and so I stopped and replied with a snapshot of the millions of golden flowers I could see from my car window. I wanted to share more of beautiful California with my Canadian friend, and I found my opportunity a few miles further south. I discovered the pristine golden meadow you see here and used my large format view camera to capture the scene on film. These are native California goldfields (Lasthenia californica) spreading out toward the Temblor mountain range, with distant Temblor Peak visible near the left. I was thrilled to find the meadow undamaged by footprints or any other human touch. Perhaps the “Road Closed” sign I drove past miles back had been helpful after all! A few hundred years ago, California’s Central Valley was a vast grassland where antelope and elk grazed, and wildflowers graced the spring landscape. Today, Carrizo Plain survives as an idyllic remnant amid the state’s urban and agriculture development.

On a beautiful early autumn day I traveled Kebler Pass Road, exploring Gunnison National Forest and the Elk Mountains of Colorado on my way east to the town of Crested Butte. I arrived at a clearing between Snowline Ridge and Trout Creek and was captivated by this grand view to the northeast, rich with autumn colors and crowned by bright cumulus clouds. The aspens were approaching the height of their fall golden glory! We're standing at an elevation of 8,850 feet above sea level, looking toward distant Purple Mountain at center (elevation 12,958 feet). Purple Mountain marks the north end of the Ruby Mountain Range, which continues past the right edge of this scene. Starting at Purple Mountain we see Augusta Mountain, Richmond Mountain, Hancock Peak, Oh-be-joyful Peak, Afley Peak, Purple Peak, and finally Mt. Owen at far right, which is the tallest peak in the range, reaching 13,058 feet. Forming the eastern boundary of Raggeds Wilderness, the picturesque Ruby Range offers scenic hikes and summits, as well as places for rock and gem enthusiasts to hunt. Another named peak, Mt. Justice (11,760 feet) can be seen beyond the four tall pines near the left of the panorama.
Taneshia is a joung talented Berlin actress.
At the beginning she was pretty modest - but after a while we took these absoultely quiet, strong, clear, open minded shots.

In this area of California the sky is usually either completely clear or cloudy; periods with a pleasing mix of clouds as seen here are rare and fleeting. Although I had frequented Joseph D. Grant County Park, I had never ventured up this particular hill at the north end of the park until this beautiful spring day. The clouds were blowing by rather quickly as I made this photograph of an old oak tree and the foothills below Mt. Hamilton. A short while later, the clouds were all gone. In order to capture as much of the pretty sky as possible, I used a 47mm Schneider Super-Angulon XL lens, which is the widest rectilinear lens made for a 4x5 view camera like mine. Thanks to the extraordinary lens, this picture enjoys a 120 degree field of view! The 9,560 acre Joseph D. Grant County Park is located in Halls Valley, just east of San Jose, CA.

During the wildflower super bloom of 2016, I traveled to Death Valley where I discovered this natural garden of blossoming desert gold or desert sunflower (Geraea canescens) at 210 feet below sea level in Badwater Basin. Other spots in the valley had more spectacular blooms in terms of quantity, but I was charmed by how delicate and lovely the flowers looked here with the rugged Black Mountains as a backdrop. The flower of this colorful annual is popular with bees and birds, while the seeds are an important food source for birds and rodents.

This was a particularly beautiful winter's day in Joseph D. Grant County Park. I had enjoyed the afternoon wandering the hills near the beginning of Washburn Trail, making a number of photographs with impressive clouds in the sky. Eventually the sun was getting low and I headed back toward the car with a sense of accomplishment and completion. I happened to look over my shoulder glimpsing this wonderful scene, and proceeded to make one final photograph - my favorite of the day! To do a good job with landscape photography as with any occupation, it's best not to arrive late for work or leave too early! Here we see a grand old oak tree - dormant for winter - with impossibly intricate, gnarled, yet graceful branches whose collective shape is echoed in cumulus clouds that are just starting to take on the colors of sunset. This end of Grant County Park features numerous majestic oak trees standing proudly on gently rolling grass-covered hills. In the distance is snowcapped Mt. Hamilton - one of the landmark peaks surrounding the San Francisco Bay area. At 4,360 feet, it is the tallest mountain overlooking Santa Clara (Silicon) Valley, and is the site of Lick Observatory, the first permanently occupied mountain-top observatory.

On this April afternoon I was very impressed by the dramatic storm clouds blowing by, and I went off in search of a pretty location to photograph under them. I arrived at the High Meadow in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve just in time to photograph this grove of old oak trees before the shadow of the hill in back of me reached them. The 3,800 acre Rancho San Antonio is located in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains by the town of Los Altos Hills, CA. In the distance is the Santa Clara Valley and Diablo Mountain Range.

North boundary, Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve SNR, Los Angeles County, CA, 4/8/2008

In spring of 2008 I spent a few days photographing wildflowers at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve near Lancaster, CA. Here is the view one afternoon at the north boundary of the park. The wind was very strong, making the photography challenging. But with the winds came dramatic clouds like the ones seen here over the distant rolling hills! The tiny yellow daisies are goldfields or Lasthenia glabrata. The orange flowers are California poppies or Eschscholzia californica, also known as copa de oro (cup of gold). The Poppy Reserve is a state-protected land located in the rural westside of the Antelope Valley in northern Los Angeles County. This grassland area is one of the state's most consistent poppy-bearing regions.
