I kept this newborn monarch butterfly indoors overnight because of freezing temperature, and released him on a tropical milkweed flower this afternoon when the temperature reached 70° F. After dutifully allowing me to photograph him, after about five minutes his first flight was to the top of a kousa dogwood tree in my front yard and he was then completely free to live his short life.

Despite freezing temperatures and 30 mile per hours winds; we few, we happy few, we band of brothers (and sisters), have a MARVELOUS ride!

An early autumn morning at Sharon Woods Lake and a near freezing temperature. Just a "bit" below normal for the middle of October in Cincinnati.

December 20, 2015, 9:01 a.m.

With the bright sunshine, we're not feeling the cold (sub-freezing) temperature. Some of us have removed our gloves and partially unzipped our jackets in an effort to cool down a bit.

The steam (left-side of group) is probably from someone's exhaled breath.

Steve, the pace leader, often leads his group in a tight formation. We huddle for warmth (ha ha), but also we're chatting along the way. Sunday running is very sociable.

It’s that time of year again when EEC are getting ready to crawl through mud, jump into a container of ICE, run through wires containing 10,000 volts of electricity, – it can only be Tough Mudder 2014! The team are going to have to suffer through freezing temperatures, run 12 long miles through thick sticky mud, hills, rough terrain and did I mention the mud! It’s going to be epic and could possibly be the hardest and most gruelling event the team will ever face!

Last year EEC took on the Yorkshire event; this year we are taking on Tough Mudder North West at the Cholmondeley Estate with 13,000 other brave and crazy people! And after 6 hard weeks of Bootcamp, the team feel trained and are pumped up and raring to go. The course will test the team’s physical and mental limits, their sanity, bravery and biggest and deepest fears – electric shocks, shockingly icy water, dark and confined spaces, fire, heights, exhaustion… The course has been compared to that of Royal Marine training courses and only the bravest and most physically trained will manage to stagger across the finish line to get that much needed beer and well deserved headband.

6 brave members of the EEC team will also be taking on the ‘Mudder Legionnaire’ obstacles in the hope of joining the new ‘Mudder Legionnaire’ – a special organisation of multi-mudders, people who have completed 2 or more Tough Mudder events. If they manage to complete the course and the extra obstacles they will be rewarded with an extra green headband and ultimate respect.

And not only are the EEC team preparing to take on what is advertised as ‘possibly the toughest event on earth’ they are also busy raising money for two fantastic charities – Brain Tumour Research and Queenscourt Hospice. And did we mention we had to sign a death waiver?!

Today temperatures dropped to -10 in Arlington National Cemetery. Despite the freezing temperatures Soldiers from The Old Guard continue to perform their duties with honor and precision while honoring our Nations Fallen.

This past weekend, the weather forecast for Savannah was predicting below-freezing temperatures and a chance of sleet and snow on Tuesday night and Wednesday. During Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, the Savannah area had sleet and rain, but it didn't snow. When I got ready to leave my house this morning, I noticed that my car was coated in a somewhat thick layer of clear ice, which I was able to scrape off. The car was also able to start without any problems, and I'd just let the engine run for about 5 minutes. The roads were wet but not heavily icy (except on some bridges), so I figured I could still make it to work today since I live only a few miles from work. After I got to work this morning, I noticed that the other cars in the parking lot had icicles on them.

When I left work this afternoon, I noticed that most of the cars in the parking lot still had icicles on them, and my car still had ice on the windshield and the roof. I also noticed that the ice on my car was about the same consistency as the ice that you'd get in a drink at Zaxby's.

A good supply of salt is fundamental to any successful winter service. Salt lowers the freezing temperature of water, which means that it has to be colder for snow or ice to form on the road.

The Scottish Salt Group has been monitoring the restocking process throughout the summer, including meeting with suppliers to confirm there is adequate salt production to meet the demand and that restocking targets for Scotland are being met.

645,000 tonnes of salt were used in Scotland during winter 2010-11. The total salt stock in Scotland on 1 November 2011 was 657,000 tonnes (including strategic salt). This represents 102% of total used during winter 2010-11.

This snow is the first sign of the treacherous winter in the region that will only increase suffering for children and their families until March. Between November and February, temperatures can drop as low as minus six and with over 2 million refugees in the region, 1 million of them children, the humanitarian crisis will worsen in the coming months. .

Many hands make light (or lighter) work, especially in the freezing temperatures at the ARM North Slope of Alaska (NSA) site. In September 2008, Barrow, officially known as Utqiaġvik, site facilities manager Walter Brower (standing) joined instrument mentor Mike Ritsche on the scaffolding to upgrade the sensors on the 40-meter meteorological tower. On the ground, tower mentor Dave Cook helped install the wiring and power supplies that raise and lower the various "booms" containing the instrumentation.
