We had an uncharacteristically large amount of snow in Corvallis this week! Nearly 8" in one night, and thanks to the below freezing temperatures all day, it's not going anywhere! Rachel and I went out yesterday to take advantage of the magnificent lighting.

Some sub-zero movement. The sun is hitting these icicles causing them to slowly melt outside my window. With the freezing temperatures, that's about the only movement outside today.

We left Baltimore with sub freezing temperatures. The last thing we thought about was buying sunblock for Peru. After walking around all day in Barranco and Miraflores when I returned to the hotel I realized I had a problem. SUNBURN! I had forgotten how close the equator we would be! Needless to say buying sunblock was at the top of out list the next morning.
After nearly two straight weeks of sub-freezing temperatures, the Chicago River looked gorgeous as ever.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
On the 10th of December 2017 a heavier than expected snowfall, and freezing temperatures, brought parts of the UK to a standstill. Fortunately it was a Sunday so the effects weren't as bad as they might have been. Many roads were closed – even major roads and some motorways were closed. Schools were closed for several days the following week. All gone by the 13th thank goodness.
The monthly Calgary Critical Mass Bike Ride had bad luck with the weather this month — close to freezing temperatures — which prompted many folks to skip the ride.
We had an even dozen riders come out.

Well, finally! After a couple of weeks of above-freezing temperatures we finally have some mud! The dog park was great, so many dog owners are too wimpy to take their dogs to the dog park when it's muddy, but not my mom. She da bomb!

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - Freezing temperatures, muddy conditions, simulated explosions and countless physical challenges awaited Team APG Soldiers and civilians who honored the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor during the Physically, Mentally and Emotionally, or PME, Hard Challenge, Dec. 9, 2016.
Held on the grounds of the former Ordnance Museum on APG North (Aberdeen), the even focused on a range of survival tactics used by the survivors – and victims – of the infamous Dec. 7, 1941 attack.

for 7DoS: I felt sure, given the freezing temperatures we have had, that the local ice rink would be open today. Sadly, it seems the ice was not thick enough - according to the sign it measured just 4cm on Sunday. It remains an imitation of an ice rink ;)
The chance has gone now, as the temperatures are due to rise and this almost ice rink, will be a large puddle again soon.
The bud was teasing me for 3 days: so yesterday I forced it open for the pollen otherwise there would have been no tie-up with other flowers for cross-pollination. And what happens this morning? It opens of its own accord. I am just not patient enough! (There is a second bud behind this bloom.)
Not a bad species for a barely heated greenhouse where the plant has spent all winter just above freezing temperatures.
You'll have to excuse the image quality, I have still not found a reliable way to make a digital camera work at sub-freezing temperatures and 99% RH.
Nonetheless this is where I spent the night. With the coyotes, owls, and mice. I know coyotes don't attack people but they certainly came close. Within 20 feet of my sleeping bag which was kind of scary because it is difficult to just jump up out of a mummy bag...
I awoke to the sound of an owl, some cows, and a billion tiny birds which invaded the trees behind me. The tiny sliver of a moon rose from behind the fog blanket that covered paradise ridge. I don't know how I didn't freeze.
It was a good 45 min before I could warm up the batteries and de-ice my camera enough that it would take a single photograph. Death to NiMH. I bought a 15AH lead-acid lawnmower battery yesterday. Nothing can stop me!

A rainstorm followed by freezing temperatures froze this bungee cord at the Ravenswood Metra station.
I found this insect (body length about 3 mm) under rotting leaves few days ago. At first I thought it would be a strange-looking spider, because it went like a spider. At home I took a closer look and I was surprised by the head-shape and the halteres. After some research on the internet I would identify this creature as a female Chionea sp., commonly called snow flies.
Some facts: Adults occur during winter, where they can be observed walking over snow. They produce glycerol in their hemolymph, preventing them from freezing. The winglessness of the genus is probably attributable to the fact that at sub-freezing temperatures, it is very hard to generate enough energy for maintaining flight muscles. Also, the space normally taken by flight muscles is used to store eggs. However, the halteres have not been reduced and are innervated, thus probably serving as sensory organs.

With the east coast of ireland experiencing freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall, KARE Social Services, based at Sybil Hill Road, Raheny., elicited the assistance of the Irish Defence forces to enable delivery of their "Meals on Wheels" service to elderly people living in the Killester, Artane, Raheny and Edenmore areas of Dublin. Pictured above, is a 4-wheel drive Mitsubishi vehicle.
Without the help of the Irish Defence Forces during this period of inclement weather, many vunerable people in the community would not have had hot meals and provisions delivered
