CK Hall enjoys a nutritious juice in the morning and uses ingredients that give her a good balance of both root vegetables and #chlorophyll-rich #wheatgrass from Pines, grown outdoors through often freezing temperatures and then harvested and #raw processed at the once-a-year nutritional peak.
Here's more from CK about her morning juice:
Some folks asked how I mix in my wheatgrass powder into my morning juice.
I use my PC stainless steel mini whipper!
Morning shot'o juice today is:
3 carrots
1 kiwi
1 granny smith apple
3 cups spinach
Then whip in
1-1/4 tsp Pines Organic Wheatgrass Powder from @wheatgrass_people
Feeling good. Feeling strong :-)
As always, #ckscooking :)

With 3"-5" inches of snow and freezing temperatures in New Orleans making the news right now I thought it would be a good time to post these old photos
They were all taken by me at age 13 while on a spring break trip with my family to New Orleans while in middle school. My trusty Kodak Hawkeye Instamatic camera was used once again. We took Amtrak down from Chicago but fortunately flew back home as the train ride down in coachwas LONG and grueling while battling a cold.
My railfan father and I wanted to catch the New Orleans streetcars as at the time they were some of the last survivors in the country and before the revival of streetcars and light rail that was still in the future.
Cleaned up as much as possible using Photoshop Elements. Found in old sleeves of prints.
It’s that time of year again when EEC are getting ready to crawl through mud, jump into a container of ICE, run through wires containing 10,000 volts of electricity, – it can only be Tough Mudder 2014! The team are going to have to suffer through freezing temperatures, run 12 long miles through thick sticky mud, hills, rough terrain and did I mention the mud! It’s going to be epic and could possibly be the hardest and most gruelling event the team will ever face!
Last year EEC took on the Yorkshire event; this year we are taking on Tough Mudder North West at the Cholmondeley Estate with 13,000 other brave and crazy people! And after 6 hard weeks of Bootcamp, the team feel trained and are pumped up and raring to go. The course will test the team’s physical and mental limits, their sanity, bravery and biggest and deepest fears – electric shocks, shockingly icy water, dark and confined spaces, fire, heights, exhaustion… The course has been compared to that of Royal Marine training courses and only the bravest and most physically trained will manage to stagger across the finish line to get that much needed beer and well deserved headband.
6 brave members of the EEC team will also be taking on the ‘Mudder Legionnaire’ obstacles in the hope of joining the new ‘Mudder Legionnaire’ – a special organisation of multi-mudders, people who have completed 2 or more Tough Mudder events. If they manage to complete the course and the extra obstacles they will be rewarded with an extra green headband and ultimate respect.
And not only are the EEC team preparing to take on what is advertised as ‘possibly the toughest event on earth’ they are also busy raising money for two fantastic charities – Brain Tumour Research and Queenscourt Hospice. And did we mention we had to sign a death waiver?!

The Azures survived the brutally cold snap with freezing temperatures plummeting into the 20's and strong northerly wind. They are very resilient! This Azure is showing signs of battle and part of his hindwing is snapped off, probably by a hungry bird.
The magnolia blooms did not fare so well. It was a sad sight today with all blossoms and buds brown and withered away.

A good supply of salt is fundamental to any successful winter service. Salt lowers the freezing temperature of water, which means that it has to be colder for snow or ice to form on the road.
The Scottish Salt Group has been monitoring the restocking process throughout the summer, including meeting with suppliers to confirm there is adequate salt production to meet the demand and that restocking targets for Scotland are being met.
645,000 tonnes of salt were used in Scotland during winter 2010-11. The total salt stock in Scotland on 1 November 2011 was 657,000 tonnes (including strategic salt). This represents 102% of total used during winter 2010-11.

Helleborus buds... Yesterday it was lovely here in Virginia Beach, sunny and warm, temperature in the low 50sF. I worked in my garden for a few hours getting it ready for my spring planting. I have three Helleborus plants, and at the end of every January I look for flower buds, sure enough all three are full of buds. It amazes me how this plants blooms in the freezing temperatures. The blooms begin as dark colors and fade to a light green as they age, the plants leaves stay green throughout the year. I usually cut off the older foliage this time of year.

The snow and freezing temperatures didn't prevent this event, and certainly didn't prevent me from going out to take this pictures.
Thanks to all the agencies and people involved in making this event happen!
Fog and freezing temperatures makes great frosts. The temperature was a little above freezing so all the ice was falling from the trees.

All of our major local floras* currently treat Ranunculus sceleratus var. multifidus as an annual, even using that character prominently in taxonomic keys (fortunately, FNA does not). In fact, while it often does seem to behave like an annual, its lifespan is most certainly potentially longer than that (and there are a few references for this taxon from outside Utah that refer to it as an annual or short-lived perennial).
This is a plant growing in mid-January after having survived some freezing temperatures (a smaller/newer plant can be seen at left with a Russian Olive drupe that has fallen right on top of it ). It is true that we have had a relative mild winter overall and the life cycle of this buttercup could well be influenced by climatic factors. The center plant pictured however likely germinated and started to grow at least by last fall. It will probably start to bloom in May or June (I have seen plants of this species blooming well into November), and so it can be either a winter annual or biennial and possibly a short-lived perennial depending on conditions.
This is a fascinating taxon that is semi-aquatic (although grouped sometimes with terrestrial buttercups which can also lead to confusion in identification) and can grow in shallow pools or on the edges of ponds completely submerged with its leaves floating on the water in its initial aquatic phase. It can however also start growing on moist soil that essentially never dries out. Then when the water level declines but the soil remaining moist, it ultimately produces abundant branching flowering stalks (and as with many other particularly aquatic buttercups, it has strongly dimorphic leaves) and often flowers over a long period of time, dependent no doubt on available moisture. This species is no doubt an important evolutionary link between completely aquatic versus truly terrestrial buttercups.

*An exception to a local fora that instead treats this differently is Stephen Clark's field guide for the Flora of the Central Wasatch (and adjacent valleys) dated January 2012. In his key, he includes it in a section of perennials (with no reference to it being an annual). This really though isn't exactly right either and could also lead to misidentifications.

Naturally formed ice that occurs in Tennessee at below freezing temperatures,i call them ice flowers! The formation of frost flowers, also known as "ice flowers," is apparently dependent on a freezing weather condition occurring when the ground is not already frozen. The sap in the stem of the plants will expand (water expands when frozen), causing long, thin cracks to form along the length of the stem. Water is then drawn through these cracks via capillary action and freezes upon contact with the air. As more water is drawn through the cracks it pushes the thin ice layers further from the stem, causing a thin "petal" to form. In the case of woody plants and (living or dead) tree branches the freezing water is squeezed through the pores of the plant forming long thin strings of ice that look uncannily like hair i.e. "frost beard".
The petals of frost flowers are very delicate and will break when touched. They usually melt or sublimate when exposed to sunlight and are usually visible in the early morning or in shaded areas.

After rain there came snow and after snow there came freezing temperatures.. Our winter seems to delight in torturing us.. It's so nice to have some colorful shots to work with..
Conditions were just perfect for the ice build up at the bottom of Websters Falls. We had freezing temperatures, then it rained and then it got cold again. The rain didn't get absorbed by the ground because the ground was frozen, so all of the rain just ran into the rivers and creeks. Thus we had an abundance of water at the falls. More water equals more spray. More spray equal beautiful ice formations on the trees and rocks.
