I was down in Jacksonville, FL for work, and that allowed me to see Angel a few times, make sure she's doin okay. So that was worth the freezing (yes, freezing) temperatures in JAX!

Squatting to take pics near the stream, right before I decided to jump it.....that's when I heard a loud POP and my knee went out...ahh, life's challenges! : } Long long, one legged hop home in freezing temperatures...

Night-time fog, very still air, and below-freezing temperatures. This is the beautiful, ephemereal result.

removing plants that did not survive the 2 days of below freezing temperatures during winter 2016

So far, this flowering plant in Riverside Park has survived one blizzard, a couple of gentle snowfalls and a few nights with below-freezing temperatures. But I haven't checked on it today, after the coldest night of the season.

Preventing exposure of vaccines to freezing temperatures is a global health priority. Freezing temperatures can irreversibly damage many vaccines, especially those that contain aluminum salt adjuvants, which boost the immunogenicity and efficacy of the vaccine antigens but also increase the sensitivity of the vaccine product to freezing. If freezing is suspected, the vaccines must be discarded—increasing rates of vaccine waste and raising costs for either the immunization program or the vaccine manufacturer responsible for the product. If the vaccines are not discarded, there is a risk of inadvertently administering a vaccine with reduced potency to patients.

PATH has developed a promising method to protect liquid vaccine formulations containing an aluminum salt adjuvant or its equivalent from freeze damage. PATH has applied the freeze-protection technology to hepatitis B, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP), and DTP-hepatitis B-Haemophilus influenza type b vaccines—with demonstrable results. To facilitate widespread adoption of the technology and to give vulnerable populations a better chance of receiving fully potent vaccines, PATH has placed the technology within the public domain.

Funding for this project is provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Read more about our work in vaccine stabilization.

Can I get another "hell yeah" for taking pictures at 6am in below freezing temperatures? Watching the sunrise in the forest. Yeah, forest.

No matter how far away from everything you may be, society finds its way to intrude upon your solitude, be it planes soaring 35,000 feet over head, cities polluting the dark night sky or power lines spreading across the expanses, or a road winding through the forest in front of you. Just outside of Cima, CA the largest, densest Joshua Tree forest grows in most absolute silence except for the occasional car that rounds its street's curvy corners.

If you ever get a chance to visit the Mojave National Preserve you HAVE to go. The National Preserves (part of the National Park Service) do not get enough respect or veneration that their bigger siblings the National Parks receive. Aside from the hunting that is allowed in the preserves, they are practically identical in structure and standing as a National Park.

The Mojave National Preserve also boasts the famous Kelso Sand Dunes that rise 650 feet above the surrounding desert floor, the gorgeous Granite Mountains full of spires, perched boulders, and curved cliff faces, ancient caves (lava tubes) formed from volcanic flows, rhyolite cliffs pockmarked with holes and gaps, plus much more.

The frost was with us all day today but despite the freezing temperature I like to look for some beauty in it...to me this image of a frost covered Hydrangea reflects that beauty:)

Sub freezing temperatures the last few days caused this creek to turn solid in an interesting way. Seen in Lion's Den Gorge on Lake Michigan.

Last time we had freezing temperatures this so-called winter in the Pacific northwest, I found a layer of ice crystals in the mulch of the trail. Broke off a chunk, laid it on its side and took this picture. It was very brittle.

Googling around a bit I ran into a 1916 Nature article describing the curious emergent phenomenon of ice extrusion.

A related (and much better!) photo in Wunderphotos, taken one day earlier, shows the same kind of formation. The scale looks very different. Here's another one, from 2007.

Even in that freezing temperature, I found the people of Ladakh to be amongst the most cheerful ones, ever. We were so cold that a bunch of us were sitting inside a car. Some ladies walked up to us and made small talk and shared some dried apricots with us. Wonderful hospitality.

Now that's a charity worth supporting.

I kept this newborn monarch butterfly indoors overnight because of freezing temperature, and released him on a tropical milkweed flower this afternoon when the temperature reached 70° F. After dutifully allowing me to photograph him, after about five minutes his first flight was to the top of a kousa dogwood tree in my front yard and he was then completely free to live his short life.

Passiflora vitifolia a.k.a. Crimson Passion Flower

Passiflora vitifolia is a species of Passiflora. It is a vine with cylindric stems covered in red-brown hairs when young. The leaves are three-lobed, up to 15 cm long and 18 cm broad. The flowers are bright red, up to 9 cm diameter. The fruit is a berry 5 cm long and 3 cm broad, containing numerous seeds. ~ wikipedia

Fairly fast-growing passionflower vine. The common name is derived from the shape of leaves resembling that of grape leaves. The large (up to 6") flowers may attract butterflies. The vine is moderately hardy and can be killed back by hard freezing temperatures or prolonged frosts. It grows best in slightly cooler climate (than tropical) without frost. Plant the vine in full sun or part shade, it has only moderate drought tolerance. ~ source (www.tradewindsfruit.com)

Despite freezing temperatures and 30 mile per hours winds; we few, we happy few, we band of brothers (and sisters), have a MARVELOUS ride!

An early autumn morning at Sharon Woods Lake and a near freezing temperature. Just a "bit" below normal for the middle of October in Cincinnati.

December 20, 2015, 9:01 a.m.

With the bright sunshine, we're not feeling the cold (sub-freezing) temperature. Some of us have removed our gloves and partially unzipped our jackets in an effort to cool down a bit.

The steam (left-side of group) is probably from someone's exhaled breath.

Steve, the pace leader, often leads his group in a tight formation. We huddle for warmth (ha ha), but also we're chatting along the way. Sunday running is very sociable.

Despite freezing temperatures and 30 mile per hours winds; we few, we happy few, we band of brothers (and sisters), have a MARVELOUS ride!

It’s that time of year again when EEC are getting ready to crawl through mud, jump into a container of ICE, run through wires containing 10,000 volts of electricity, – it can only be Tough Mudder 2014! The team are going to have to suffer through freezing temperatures, run 12 long miles through thick sticky mud, hills, rough terrain and did I mention the mud! It’s going to be epic and could possibly be the hardest and most gruelling event the team will ever face!

Last year EEC took on the Yorkshire event; this year we are taking on Tough Mudder North West at the Cholmondeley Estate with 13,000 other brave and crazy people! And after 6 hard weeks of Bootcamp, the team feel trained and are pumped up and raring to go. The course will test the team’s physical and mental limits, their sanity, bravery and biggest and deepest fears – electric shocks, shockingly icy water, dark and confined spaces, fire, heights, exhaustion… The course has been compared to that of Royal Marine training courses and only the bravest and most physically trained will manage to stagger across the finish line to get that much needed beer and well deserved headband.

6 brave members of the EEC team will also be taking on the ‘Mudder Legionnaire’ obstacles in the hope of joining the new ‘Mudder Legionnaire’ – a special organisation of multi-mudders, people who have completed 2 or more Tough Mudder events. If they manage to complete the course and the extra obstacles they will be rewarded with an extra green headband and ultimate respect.

And not only are the EEC team preparing to take on what is advertised as ‘possibly the toughest event on earth’ they are also busy raising money for two fantastic charities – Brain Tumour Research and Queenscourt Hospice. And did we mention we had to sign a death waiver?!

52234 getting seen to over the pits. It was looking a little grubby, but could not be washed as the freezing temperatures would simply freeze the water on the the coach's windows and bodywork.
