Taken on a very cold photoshoot with the amazing Tamara. She is a true professional to work with, staying focused and collected in freezing temperatures.
Upon seeing the flurry of luxuriously fluffy snowflakes, she stepped out into the balcony. Though the glass enclosing it was thick, the freezing temperature had penetrated it, slightly chilling her bare face and feet. The languid tumbling of snow from the heavens expunged the previous night's unforgettable spectacle - a million people filling the frosty air and neon streets with exuberance and cheers at the stroke of midnight.
She followed a large black-billed magpie with her eyes until it alighted onto its nest with the inconceivable precision and grace of nature. A tiny baby bird's head was barely visible over the accumulated twigs and snow, then disappeared from view under the adult's feathery embrace.
Poor creatures without a roof, she thought. And poorer still the many men who are as destitute, yet possessing all the wealth of painful knowledge of their circumstances…
Her silent wonderment was replaced by a sinking lugubriousness. After a few minutes of snow-gazing, she went back into the living room, instantly warmed, and thanked God.

The snow and freezing temperatures didn't prevent this event, and certainly didn't prevent me from going out to take this pictures.
Thanks to all the agencies and people involved in making this event happen!

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - Freezing temperatures, muddy conditions, simulated explosions and countless physical challenges awaited Team APG Soldiers and civilians who honored the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor during the Physically, Mentally and Emotionally, or PME, Hard Challenge, Dec. 9, 2016.
Held on the grounds of the former Ordnance Museum on APG North (Aberdeen), the even focused on a range of survival tactics used by the survivors – and victims – of the infamous Dec. 7, 1941 attack.

The aftermath, 2 days after the fire started. The flames continue to flare up and the freezing temperatures make work slow and difficult. Most of the building has collapsed, and the entire structure and surrounding area is covered in a thick sheet of ice.

Between my puppy, my full hard drive, insomnia and some other computer projects that make me incapable of looking at my screen, I've had difficulty making time for posting to Flickr or my website. That should be remedied soon. I am happy to report that despite the little prank by Spring (an inch of snow and a couple night of below freezing temperatures) the jumpers are out in pretty good force and I think I have some decent shots to share. I've spotted Sitticus pubescens, Salticus scenicus, Phidippus audax and possibly a Pelegrina sp.. Not a lot else buzzing about in the yard — the odd fly, one shiny little black weevil, a stray plant louse — but it's coming. Photos to follow suit. :o)

When grown outdoors in Northern California, rajapuri produces outstanding quality fruit: this variety is a keeper! Leaves on this variety remain in good condition even with near freezing temperatures while American Goldfinger (FHIA-1) grown in the exact same environment has many brown leaves (see brown leaf in the right hand corner of the photo).
An insight to the life of a young 2nd man on British Rail nearly 40 years ago, A rather busy 2 weeks on the footplate, during very adverse weather, snow, freezing temperatures etc.
I'll try to explain what the entries mean and if i can recall some of the details.
On the left hand side was book on and book off times, on the right total hours worked. A/R meant after rest, as a minimum of 12 hours were required between shifts. Three consecutive days after rest wasn't the normal practice but with the weather there was total chaos during those couple of weeks, I wasn't the only one who took advantage of the situation, fill yer boots all hands to the pump etc.
Loco/units denoted with a D/ were what I drove, replacing the asterisk.
RTH was affectionately know as "round the houses", basically to free up space in New Street, take the loco via Aston, Perry Barr, Soho back to New St to waste a bit of time and free up some space.
Saturday 12th - was pretty memorable, 47528 to Manchester Picc a dual heated loco on a rake of steam heat only stock! Boiler job for me, on arrival at Manchester I was asked to ring control to see If I would work back to Birmingham, I said ok but was expecting another 47. Whilst I made a brew and to my utter surprise I could see a 40 backing down, omg!! 40027 a namer, bolted itself onto the stock. Wow, now filled with excitement and a little nervousness, I hadn't worked a boiler on a 40 before. I managed to get it steaming very nicely, I sat in the rear cab, as the boiler was that end, just to keep an eye on it and to mainly have my head out the window on the way back getting all that wonderful EE sound! My driver needed a "chaperone" anyway as not driven one for many a year, so whilst he was having a refresher, I got to be like a big kid again!
Sunday 13th - 47035 another steamer for Manchester running very late, we ran out of water at Wolves and then sat outside Crewe for 3 hours with all the points frozen. The train was empty apart from the freezing guard whom came and sat with us in the cab to thaw out.
It’s that time of year again when EEC are getting ready to crawl through mud, jump into a container of ICE, run through wires containing 10,000 volts of electricity, – it can only be Tough Mudder 2014! The team are going to have to suffer through freezing temperatures, run 12 long miles through thick sticky mud, hills, rough terrain and did I mention the mud! It’s going to be epic and could possibly be the hardest and most gruelling event the team will ever face!
Last year EEC took on the Yorkshire event; this year we are taking on Tough Mudder North West at the Cholmondeley Estate with 13,000 other brave and crazy people! And after 6 hard weeks of Bootcamp, the team feel trained and are pumped up and raring to go. The course will test the team’s physical and mental limits, their sanity, bravery and biggest and deepest fears – electric shocks, shockingly icy water, dark and confined spaces, fire, heights, exhaustion… The course has been compared to that of Royal Marine training courses and only the bravest and most physically trained will manage to stagger across the finish line to get that much needed beer and well deserved headband.
6 brave members of the EEC team will also be taking on the ‘Mudder Legionnaire’ obstacles in the hope of joining the new ‘Mudder Legionnaire’ – a special organisation of multi-mudders, people who have completed 2 or more Tough Mudder events. If they manage to complete the course and the extra obstacles they will be rewarded with an extra green headband and ultimate respect.
And not only are the EEC team preparing to take on what is advertised as ‘possibly the toughest event on earth’ they are also busy raising money for two fantastic charities – Brain Tumour Research and Queenscourt Hospice. And did we mention we had to sign a death waiver?!

Strange to see so many seagulls in a landlocked country in sub-freezing temperatures. These birds are hanging out on the frozen surface of the reflection pool just in front of Gloriette.
Freezing temperatures and dipping water have formed some interesting ice features which look similar to stalagmites, on the floor of the 1907 railroad tunnel located at Conemaugh Dam.
Ice gradually builds upward from the floor as a deposit from ground water seeping through and dripping from the tunnel’s roof.
During construction of the dam this tunnel and the 1864 tunnel had to be plugged with a 20 ft plug to allow the dam to be filled. These tunnels are a popular site visit for many visitors and the 1907 railroad grade has been incorporated into the Conemaugh Valley Conservancy bike trail. There's just nothing like taking a dog outside when it's 23F (-5C) and standing around waiting. He took his sweater off overnight and is now wishing he hadn't been in such a hurry to get outside this morning and had waited for me to put it back on him.

(Oslo, Norway) - It was late in a shady area of town. I figured the freezing temperatures would keep the worst troublemakers away.

Despite freezing temperatures and 30 mile per hours winds; we few, we happy few, we band of brothers (and sisters), have a MARVELOUS ride!
We had some thick fog last night. Combined with just-below-freezing temperatures meant that everything was sugar coated this morning.
