We contributed to the March article of 10 Magazine.

This is a shot from my office window where I ran my freelance business from 2000-2001 on Main Street in downtown F-burg. The greatest space! It was most of the second story over the old Palace Theatre, a place where my Mom watched movies as a child on Saturdays. This is shortly after I moved in (w/ a fave film playing downstairs).

This was my home office then.

One noteworthy mention. Living above a theatre is recommended for a number of reasons (not just being able to roll down the stairs, and then walk a mere few feet in order to pick up a tick). One of the best, for me? Standing in the front hallway at certain times of day -- the popcorn maker would fire up, filling my place (or @ least that part of it) with buttery popcorn aromatherapy! :)

RD7934. This attractive looking freelance Pacific was built in 1927 and is named EUREKA. It can be seen on the 7¼” gauge Great Cockcrow Railway and this picture shows it arriving at Hardwick Central.

Situated near Chertsey in Surrey, the Great Cockcrow Railway is an impressive and extensive fully signalled line with two intertwined routes, each giving a ride of around 20 minutes. Six or more trains can be in operation at any one time and there are some steepish gradients to make the engines work hard.

The IT sector has been identified as a thrust sector for quite sometime now, yet we are still struggling to find our place in the outsourcing industry. Bangladesh did not make the list in a recent report from your. T. Kearney's Global Services Location List (GSLI), a ranking of the most attractive off-shoring places.

The proposal is based on insights that I gained over last 7 years in building an IT outsourcing business.

Based on what I can gather, Bangladeshi companies exported IT services worth $27 thousand in 2008. I would venture to state that a significant part of this revenue originated in freelancing sites like RentACoder and Elance. Many of the companies involved in outsourcing are basing their particular businesses on freelancing. While availing opportunities available on these sites are great, we cannot create a sustainable and significant industry just away from these sites.

Many people cite infrastructure issues like unreliable power and net connection, and high cost of suitable commercial a workplace as reasons behind our lack regarding success. While I agree with these, there are other challenges that we usually do not hear about but are actually holding us back from achieving success. The type of these issues is complex and also cultural.

The issues are:

Company dimensions: Average size of an IT company in Bangladesh is approximately 10-12 people, only a few organizations have 50+ software engineers.

Lack regarding onshore presence: Most companies in Bangladesh do not have offices inside the buyer's country. IT services is any relationship-based business. Without regular personal discussion, it is very difficult to create a sustainable business. The greatest challenge is the time zone distinctions and distance. Although it is expensive to setup and run an business office in US or Europe, it is imperative to have a bridge team onshore to handle this very issue.

Lack of IT savvy investors and leaders: Our business culture is founded on trading and manufacturing. We do not need much experience in knowledge-based high-tech market. Successful business people from other industries invest in the IT industry in order to diversify their portfolio. However, many of which struggle to manage IT business since they try to run it like any manufacturing business.

We also see several young IT professionals turning entrepreneurs by themselves. This is good if they are working on some new product ideas, however, no work so well with IT companies (that is building software for clients). You require experience and enough credentials before commencing an IT services business.

Transient nature of the industry: - Most IT companies run their businesses according to availability of projects. The mantra is hire when there is any project, and fire when there will be none. They do not want to buy people development, and the programers usually do not want to bet their careers around the companies that do not offer a job job. As a result, we provide an industry riding on programers with the average experience of 1-2 years.

Role regarding Basis, EPB, and BCS: BCS, Schedule, and now EPB, seem to have got overlapping goals. Responsibilities must be delineated among these three organisations in order that we can be consistent.

So, exactly what do we do to address the issues stated earlier and capture the opportunity before that passes us by?

Here are a number of the things that we should implement prior to later.

Practice merger and acquisition: We all must be open to forming larger companies through merger and acquisition. For us to compete with companies coming from Vietnam (our real competition), we have to have a larger presence. This may become difficult, not because of the aspects involved but because of our traditional business culture. Through merger we could also solve having less onshore presence, one of the critical conditions that prevent Bangladeshi companies form having long-term accomplishment.

Establish an IT park: Most IT companies in Bangladesh operate from a limited space due to high cost of commercial spaces. Although the first IT incubator in BSRS Bhaban has became successful in helping companies get started out, it was not built with IT outsourcing companies in mind and hence lacks a number of the much needed features. Now is enough time to build a more comprehensive THAT park with all modern facilities (security, strength, internet, SAS 70 data centre, selection, training facility, seminar facility, supporting companies etc. ) to provide excellent environment for programers. This will also help eliminate infrastructure concerns that many buyers have got about Bangladesh.

Restructure Basis: NASSCOM could be the poster child for what such an organisation are capable of doing. We need to have a committed team of highly experienced professionals inside marketing, business, strategy, and brand development as well as IT experts. The team needs being recruited from the industry for a competitive compensation to attract the proper talents. It will report to a board of directors formed from the volunteers elected from the member organizations. A part of the EEF fund could possibly be utilised to fund this operation. Produce local market for software service: A viable IT industry needs a healthy local demand. India's local industry demand was $12 billion in '08. It is important to make sure that private companies and government agencies award projects to local companies at a price they would typically award to Indian companies. It will allow Bangladeshi companies involved in IT outsourcing to also provide same service to the local industry.

Niche market focus: It is difficult to own success with just service offerings (everything for everybody) because the global IT outsourcing industry is extremely matured now. We need to distinguish ourselves by building expertise in niche areas (emerging trends) as opposed to blending in. We need to employ a clear message to the buyers as to why they should take into account Bangladesh over other established IT outsourcing techniques destinations. Low price cannot be the particular strategy. There is nothing stopping Native indian or Vietnamese or Chinese companies coming from matching our price. In fact, they may be already doing so. The niche areas may be technology, industry, and market segments. We also desire a brand for Bangladesh as an overall destination because of it outsourcing. I would like to propose that the Bangladesh brand be "A Residence Of Agile IT Outsourcing. "

I believe we can become a known destination because of it outsourcing. We have the intention, and also talent, all we need is undertake a focus and to take the right initiatives.

While I was in service of XXX and on assignment/freelancing overseas, I would occasionally get a bewildered look and the person would ask "Where did you learn that?" and I would reply "The boyscouts" They would laugh and that would be that.

Later as a civilian, friends would occasionally say I was prepared for everything/how did you do that/how did you know that... and I would reply "The boyscouts" and they would laugh and that would be that.

I was actually a boyscout, it's not just me trying to be cute/snide/etc.
