A rose is a woody perennial flowering plant of the genus Rosa, in the family Rosaceae. There are over three hundred species and thousands of cultivars. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing, or trailing, with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwestern Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant. Roses have acquired cultural significance in many societies. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach seven meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses. 60371

Given the ID I got from iNaturalist, I'm pretty sure this is a domestic species, but one large bush of it blooms in the park every year, so I'm going to add it as a new species for my prairie wildflowers species set. There is a native viburnum species called the southern black haw, which looks like this: kswildflower.org/largePhotos.php?imageID=7615&aCatego...

American white waterlily can commonly be found in shallow lakes, ponds, and permanent slow moving waters throughout North America where it ranges from Central America to northern Canada. The flowers open each day and close again each night and are very fragrant.

One of only two surviving Hybrid Tea Roses in our garden, that originate from my late father's nursery, and enjoying one of its best years ever. Perhaps life begins at 40 for roses too. The scent that greets upon opening the front door on a warm, still morning is intoxicating.

Update: Sadly this beauty has since succumbed to the dread Honey Fungus that had previously claimed a Privet hedge and Rhus Typhina.

Also known as "White Water Lily". or "Nymphaea odorata"

'TRICKY CUSTOMER.'

Marsh Fragrant Orchids are notoriously difficult to identify with any real confidence. Certain characteristics will vary from one individual plant to another, often showing similarities with Chalk Fragrant Orchids

This is the top detail of a MFO flower spike, one of many seen in a disused Nottinghamshire claypit. There is a healthy population in the reserve, confined to one very marshy spot. Their towering pinkish-mauve spikes make an impressive show and invertebrates love them.
