The Polikarpov Po-2 might look like a fragile old biplane, but in WWII it earned a fearsome reputation in the hands of the Soviet Union’s all-female 588th Night Bomber Regiment – the “Night Witches.” Flying in darkness, with engines cut to glide silently over enemy lines, they carried out thousands of harassment raids that unsettled German troops. The whispering rush of fabric wings overhead brought dread to the front lines.
Simple, reliable, and built from wood and fabric, the Po-2 was never meant for war – yet in skilled hands it became a symbol of courage and ingenuity. Here on parade at Shuttleworth, it’s a reminder that even the humblest machine can write its name in history.
Cuando se mencionaba el Azure Window, sin duda estábamos hablando de una de las estampas más conocidas y espectaculares de Malta, del país no de la isla, porque este arco natural de piedra que era una ventana abierta al Mediterráneo de la isla de Gozo. Este sitio natural que se encuentra en la costa occidental de la isla menor del archipiélago de Malta. A sólo 12 Km. del puerto de Gozo, Mgarr Azure Window era un lugar que no debíamos perdernos cuando visitáramos Gozo.
Desgraciadamente, la fuerza del temporal que azotaba Malta la mañana del 8 de marzo de 2017 causó el derrumbamiento del arco del Azure Window. El desplome se produjo después de que la gigantesca columna de piedra que sostenía el arco se desmoronase. La noticia causó un revuelo mundial entre los millones de turistas que habían podido disfrutar de la joya de la preciosa formación. En 2013 estudios de conservación ya habían alertado de la situación, y de la fragilidad del “monumento” natural, expuesto al oleaje.

When you mentioned the Azure Window, certainly were talking about one of the most famous and spectacular of Malta, of the country not on the island, because this natural stone arch which was a window on the Mediterranean island of Gozo. This natural site that is located on the West coast of the lower of the archipelago of Malta island. Only 12 Km away from the port of joy, Mgarr Azure Window was a place that we should not miss when we visit joy.
Unfortunately, the force of the storm that whipped the morning of March 8, 2017 Malta caused the collapse of the Arch of the Azure Window. The crash came after huge stone column holding the bow break. The news caused a stir worldwide among the millions of tourists who had been able to enjoy the jewel of beautiful formation. In 2013 studies of conservation had already alerted of the situation, and the fragility of the natural "monument", exposed to the waves.

How would you create if you were going to share your soul with your audience? I've often found myself too boring in the past to create from such a personal place. I realize now that our lives are intricate and powerful and if we get to know ourselves deeply, we can create from that place meaningfully. This image is a very personal one for me, and one of my favorites in the new series. Created by dipping small balloons in plaster and popping them once they dried to look like eggshells, I made this a self-portrait (wearing a bald cap, no less!) and even printed it twice to display at my exhibition. I hope this one resonates <3
