Small Clustered Inkcaps grow on dead wood in a green moss landscape. Tranquility, fragility, and natural beauty captured in a dark, atmospheric forest setting near Ridderkerk and Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht (Netherlands).

The Mystery Valley, near Monument Valley and between Utah and Arizona, guarded by the Navajo Indians, conceals some wonders of nature. These brittle rocks, contain within them the spirit of the Indians who inhabit these lands forever.

One of the kids picked these and handed them to me, it was probably Sadie. I found a crevice in the wood and the rest is history. Feeling kinda fragile today… hence the title. Memories and moods. Mostly exhausted by this car search. One took us right next to the tow yard where his car was. Then we drove right past the crash site to go look at another. My friend is a saint though! I didn’t look much but I could tell the area had been trimmed back and cleaned up quite a bit. A life was lost there and then any trace of such an event happening was erased. Strange how that goes but I guess that’s life and that’s why I’ll never forget: he was someone to me, to my kids, our dog, his friends and family.

CRACKED MIRROR

I’m beginning to suspect one of the most common human experiences has to do with feelings of disempowerment.

A surprising number of people feel deprived of influence or importance. They feel insignificant or otherwise unnoticeable – hence the popularity of social networks that provide ‘followers’ and ‘likes’ to massage our ego, or distract from our self-critical feelings of irrelevancy.

To this end the internet plays a pivotal role.

Like no other generation in history, we’re constantly bombarded with images of beautiful, happy people in amazing locations enjoying an opulent lifestyle – everything from clothes and iphones to the latest model Audi or open plan house.

We’re constantly reminded of the life we don’t occupy, the places we’ve never visited and the car we’ll never actually own. We’re taunted by beautiful models of people we’ll never meet and the sort of sexual encounters only an Olympic gymnasts could perform!

Pornography has penetrated (Freudian slip there) our culture to the extent that products and lifestyles are sold as glossy, sexy extensions of our hedonistic, device-saturated expectation of life, yet in most cases the lives we actually inhabit are very different!

The differences between our expectations, hopes and dreams and the hard realities of Mother Earth has never been so great and in the no man’s land that separates the two lies a shared experience of despair.

Yet the good news is all of this only takes place in our heads – and thankfully our head-space can change.

“Most people believe the mind to be a mirror, more or less accurately reflecting the world outside them, not realising on the contrary that the mind is itself the principal element of creation.”

I had the honor and privilege of shooting with the unbelievably talented Drew Levin while I was back home visiting in Colorado. He brought with him not only a 5D but also a 1D Mark IV to this shoot out and I was lucky enough to get to shoot on both of these incredible cameras. That being said, please press 'L'.

The beauty in this field was breathtaking beyond comprehension- we stayed in this spot shooting for a solid 3+ hours and could've kept going if hunger hadn't pulled us away. A massive dark storm was to the East, lightning and all, while a magnificent sunset was to our West. We even saw a double rainbow. Big thanks to Emma and Lily, our lovely models who were great sports. There will be plenty more shots from this session on both my and Drew's stream to come, so stay tuned!

*Update! This made Explore July 20th, 2011. Thank you all! :)

This miniature ballet shoe is as light as a feather because it's made of paper. It feels so fragile and yet it has strength. I don't know why, but for most of my life I didn't much like pink - I preferred more earthy colours like terracotta, burnt orange and olive green - but I love it now as a colour to photograph. It fascinates me that having a camera in my hand makes me see the world differently.

I've been thinking about this shot since I started playing around with refractions a few weeks back. I wanted to be able to say that I was taking it for Earth Hour tomorrow...... however, I have really soured on the idea of "Earth Hour" since Coca-Cola has become the "official sponsor" (I find that a little repulsive)..... That being said anything that raises awareness is a good thing so shut down your lights for an hour tomorrow night, but boycott Coke when you do. ;)

PS - Earth Day - which has yet to be sold out is April 22nd.

The more that you run

The more that you lose control

The more that I watch you

The more that I let you go

I could hold you

But I’d just hold you back

I could reach for you

But you’re far off track

The more that I want you

The more that I forget your face

Never thought I’d let you see me so far gone

All I want is to see the hurt healed

And you come back here

I just need to know why’d you have to go?

This heart can’t take much more

What’s left here is a fragile love
