Butterflies undergo one of nature's most fascinating transformations, evolving through four distinct stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult.
Their vibrant wing colors come from tiny scales that reflect light, often serving as camouflage or a warning to predators.
An example of not quite getting your settings right, but the moment provided an alternative perspective.
I had far too wide an aperture, slow shutter speed and long exposure for this one. But although focus is off, I just love the effect it has had on the bees wings.
Highlighting their fragility and yet they take this little bee far and wide in its search for pollen.
This is Apis mellifera, the western honey bee. Australia's European colonisers introduced these bees to ensure a good supply of honey. They are now wild throughout most of our southern States.
Honey bees do play an important role as pollinators of crops and wild flowers, but some wild flowers have suffered from their presence as these flowers can only be pollinated by our native bees. Some native bees use a special pollination technique required by certain flowers called buzz pollination. European honey bees do not use this technique and remove pollen without pollinating the flowers.

Photography near home is really a game of opportunities for many people, myself included. The most interesting weather conditions are always going to be more accessible when they happen close to where you live! I’d say one of the more interesting weather events we tend to get in this area is the odd ice storm here and there, and this was an extra-icy one.
Ice storms are not something we hope for here: they tend to weigh down critical infrastructure, often causing power outages - some of which can last for days, or even weeks. Thankfully, this one didn’t result in a tremendous amount of damage, but it did result in an opportunity to see lots of trees covered in what appeared to be ice-like glass. Every tree became a chandelier of delicate and ornate crystals. From here, this looks a lot like frost, but up close I can tell you that it was anything but. This was the only scene I managed to capture before completely losing the light. A nice and fragile treat amid some challenging weather!
