A visit to the "Great Dorset Steam Fair" with my flickr friend Wiffsmiff. In some ways it was very frustrating, for a start we only had 10 minutes of sun before the clouds rolled in from the south coast and, more upsetting, fences prevented us photographers from getting up close to many of the exhibits.

This is a photo taken in the ploughing area and only a very short while after the sunny caterpillar photograph shown previously in my photostream. This was to be the lighting condition for the next six hours, very grey!

This morning (the day after) I know that I spent six hours trekking around the site, my hip joints are stiff, my left knee doesn't want to come downstairs and my head hurts from too little liquid intake; I was also quite upset at being able to get in at a reduced rate and hated the ticket which said OAP! However, it was the same price as for a child and that's what I felt like dashing from exhibit to exhibit just savouring the atmosphere!

Fowler's made a big investment in three new 57 seat Plaxton Derwent 3000 bodied Scania K93s in 1989 which were used to operate the routes taken over from Lincolnshire that year between Kings Lynn and Spalding, They are seen here at the the then newly acquired former Lincolnshire garage at Holbeach, later sold off. These were rather rare buses - just 10 of this combination being stock built for Scania and sold to a variety of Independents.

The Derwent Valley Light Railway (DVLR) was one of several private railways established around the country following the passing of the 1896 Light Railway Act, opening in July 1913. Passenger services were short-lived, ceasing as early as 1926 due to road competition, but freight traffic prospered on this charming rural line, including agricultural produce to market in York, as well as oil, petroleum, chemicals and coal. During the Second World War the railway carried materials for local airfields and military establishments but following cessation of hostilities reduction in traffic volumes saw the line gradually contract; originally running from York (Layerthorpe) to North Duffield, near Selby, by 1972 there was just the stretch between Dunnington and York surviving. The line was completely closed in 1981, much of the track being removed. The Derwent Valley Light Railway Society had already been formed and over time established a centre based at the Yorkshire Museum of Farming at Murton, where a short demonstration line has been laid. Shortly after closure of the DVLR, John Fowler 0-4-0 diesel-mechanical 'Churchill' (W/No.4100005 built in 1947) stands in the oil siding at York (Layerthorpe) station on 16th August 1982. From September 1971, this 150hp loco had worked at the Harvest Mills sidings of Yorkshire Grain Driers Ltd. at Dunnington station on the DVLR, originally being supplied new to the Reed Paper Mills at Thatcham in Berkshire.
