The hills are shadows, and they flow
From form to form, and nothing stands;
They melt like mist, the solid lands,
Like clouds they shape themselves and go.
But in my spirit will I dwell,
And dream my dream, and hold it true .

Forms of Nature #11: Frogs
digital collage
by Kenneth Rougeau
For my cousin Jaimie.
The eleventh image in the new "Forms of Nature" series of digital collages I'm currently constructing. Prints are available in my Etsy store (artfamilia). At present, I'm planning several individual pieces and at least one triptych for the set. More to come soon!
Bain Total (1987)
Regular edition, but kind of unique! The white colored tapes, Die Form tape stickers and Bain Total case stickers were only used for the very first BT tape releases starting around 1979. After that, Fichot started to use black and clear tapes with the K stickers on them, and then switched to Sony and Maxell tapes near the end.
My guess is that he may have come across some old stock of white tapes and stickers and decided to use them up????
Our principal violinists, cellist and harpsichordist were at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, Darlington, on Wednesday 20th September 2017 for a workshop on performance and interpretation. We greatly enjoyed working with the orchestra and soloists on three concertos – Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor BWV 1041, Vivaldi’s Flute Concerto in D major ‘The Goldfinch’ RV428 and John Garth’s Cello Concerto No 2 in B flat major. It was an intensive workshop focusing on period interpretation, style and performance practices, and at the end of the workshop the orchestra presented a concert to an invited audience of students from other schools in the area. We were delighted to be involved in this workshop to engage and explore this wonderful music with enthusiastic young players.
We’re grateful to Dr Simon Fleming (Curriculum Leader for Music) and the staff at QESFC for inviting us to lead this workshop. QESFC has a thriving culture of music education and participation, and we’re delighted to have been involved in supporting their music learning.

Chinese folktale about a scholar who falls in love with a beautiful woman, only to find she is a snake spirit in human form. A Buddhist monk kidnaps the scholar – in some versions to protect the scholar's soul, though in other versions the monk is portrayed as a jealous villain – but after many adventures the lovers are reunited.
Typically for Yangliuqing designs, the print is very detailed, large – around 60cm x 100cm – and overpainted by hand on a woodblock-printed outline and base colours. The woodblock would have been made from several planks joined together, not from a single huge board.
The design dates to the Qing dynasty, but this is a modern print published by the Yangliuqing New Year Picture Store, Tianjin (whose name appears lower right).

The below description of Fredericksburg Town Hall was taken from the National Park Service Nomination Form for National Register of Historic Places.
"The Fredericksburg Town Hall and Market Square are the sole surviving antebellum
representatives in Virginia of the association between government and market that once
flourished in several of the state's town centers. The first town hall stood in the market square
from about 1763 until 1814, when it was demolished to make room for the second town hall.
This combined market house and administrative building was inspired by English examples. In
Virginia the concept was resurrected in the eighteenth century and became one model for
Virginia's governmental and civic architecture. The Fredericksburg Town Hall is a relatively
late example of the type, but it served its dual purposes well for most of the century. By the
late nineteenth century the development of grocery and produce stores rendered the market
functions of the building obsolete. Fredericksburg's Town Hall, however, continued to serve
as the center of local government until 1982.
Fredericksburg was established in 1728, incorporated as a town in 1782, and attained city
status in 1879. It is one of a handful of Virginia urban centers that were incorporated before
1785. Others include Williamsburg, Norfolk, Alexandria, Winchester, Richmond, and
Petersburg.' These towns--later cities--became important regional trading or governmental
centers. When the lots were first laid out in each town, one was set aside as a market area to
provide needed revenue. After the towns were incorporated, ordinances required the erection
of town halls to house the governmental offices necessary for the town's business. A few towns
built structures that contained not only offices for the public business on the upper floors, but
also market stalls on the ground floor.
In Fredericksburg, the market lot was bounded by present-day William, Princess Anne,
and Caroline streets. The area, located to the rear of the site of the first Town Hall, rapidly
developed into a thriving marketplace. It was centrally located near the town docks and
convenient for the tradespeople and farmers. Vendors and craftsmen rented space and set up
stalls to sell their goods. Public gatherings, musters of the militia, and other events took place
on the grounds.
By 1782, the interior spaces of the building were used for both town and market business.
The Town Hall served as a central gathering place not only for those doing business with
the town government, but for the social elite and political leaders of Fredericksburg. For
example, the Masons met there regularly and it was in the Town Hall that George Washington
was admitted to the society on 4 November 1752. Thirty years later, at the end of the
Revolutionary War, some of the senior officers, among them Washington, formed the Society
of the Cincinnati. The first meeting of the Virginia chapter of the society took place in the
Town Hall on 7-9 October 1783. Three months later, on 12 December 1783, the Peace Ball--
perhaps the most notable event to occur in the building--was held there and attended, according
to local tradition, by both George Washington and his mother, Mary Ball Washington."

La Guerra 2007
Vladimir Montufar - Esculturas e Instalaciones

Ceratinas occur world-wide and really have the color/form/sculpturing thing down. They are the definition of crispness and elegance in my book. Expect more to come. This one comes from another worn-torn part of the world, the Crimean peninsula, but, really, bees, the study of natural history, pretty neutral ground that all can appreciate. Haven't figured out the species yet, but this is a big one. From Laurence Packer's Lab.

But murmuring of some

A representative soil profile of the Lenberg series. (Kentucky Soil Atlas; by Anastasios D. Karathanasis, University of Kentucky)
The Lenberg series consists of moderately deep well drained soils formed in residuum of acid clayey shale which is often interbedded with thin strata of siltstone, sandstone, or shale. Permeability is moderately slow. Slopes range from 6 to 45 percent. Average annual precipitation is 47 inches. Average annual temperature is 56 degrees F.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, semiactive, mesic Ultic Hapludalfs
The solum thickness and depth to a paralithic contact ranges from 20 to 40 inches. Reaction ranges from neutral to very strongly acid in the upper part of the solum and from strongly acid to very strongly acid in the lower part. Sandstone, siltstone, and shale fragments mostly 1/2 inch to 6 inches across, range from 0 to 30 percent by volume in the solum, and 5 to 60 percent in the C horizon.
USE AND VEGETATION: Most of this soil is forested. Species of trees include upland oaks, hickory, beech, elm, black walnut, and maple. Some areas have been cleared and used for cultivated crops. Many of these areas are now idle and growing young hardwoods of the above species, and sassafras, persimmon, sumac, or redcedar. A few areas are used for hay or pasture.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Pennroyal and Western Coal Field Regions of Kentucky. The extent is moderate, over 150,000 acres..

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness." (Oscar Wilde)
Lately I have been reading a lot about Daido Moriyama and some other photographers associated with him, and of course I've looked at many pictures. I have known Moriyama's work for a decade or two, but it seems only now these photos are starting to speak to me. Some things need time.
I find it fascinating how they work, and it’s interesting to read about the degree of awareness they had of what they were doing. They were really up to date theoretically and somehow worked with that. Well, possibly the 60s, 70s and still part of the 80s were a good time for this, when modernism turned to post-modernism and all kinds of stuff.
Maybe it’s anachronistic to mimic a style 60 years old. I mean, we all know that’s long gone for better or worse … but still, I tried.
Doing this has already taught me at least three things that are quite valuable:
1.
I consider myself an "advanced" photographer, after doing it for almost 40 years and basically doing nothing else for 25 years now. But in this field I am an absolute beginner. It’s humbling in a good way to see (and to feel) that I don’t know anything about this.
2.
It’s surprisingly hard to let go of the "conventional" photographic qualities most of us learned the hard way. Now it feels so strange to make blurry, underexposed, tilted photos. You really need to trick yourself to give up control.
3.
This kind of photography seems to be at least as much about "feeling the scene" as "seeing the scene". It’s hard to put in words that are not clichéd, but it’s more seeing with the imagination than with your eyes. It’s another way to approach previsualization, I guess – possibly quite useful for other genres, even if those pictures are not so great.

We were losing light pretty quickly so we stopped over in the industrial area of Regina. We originally went there to get a different feel for the photo but it ended up being pretty clear without much industrial going on.
I saw more blur this time around due to stability issues. We didn't want to suction-cup the fresh dip so we clamped right onto the hitch rack and got real wide but resulted in a little wobble.

When I first wrote about Form vs Function, I used my lighters as an example.
We spent this past weekend with Jim & Carol, and while we were there Jim gave me this Buck 110 knife (top). It's a classic that set the pattern for folding knives to come.
The pros on the Buck are obvious, it's looks and function, it is a thing of beauty, and it works. The cons are its weight and (for me) the lack of a clip. I like my knife clipped into my pocket.
The middle knife is my trusty Swiss Navy Knife. It's great, and again the wear on it hints at its history of many years of everyday use. As much as I love it, I hate its serrated blade, and it doesn't have a clip to hold it in my pocket - hence the lanyard. I've lost it in a lake once, and that's to make sure it doesn't happen again.
My everyday carry was the Milwaukee Fastback (bottom). It's a fantastic workhorse, and inexpensive to boot. It's a knife you can afford to abuse and lose. The wear on the opening button gives testimony to its constant use.
I say that the Milwaukee 'was' my everyday carry. That is because I have a request in for a lightweight multitool, and I now have the Buck.
I've picked a multitool with a titanium frame, and a straight blade. It is light. It doesn't include a marline spike, tweezers, or tooth pick (more's the pity) - which the Swiss Navy Knife does, but I reckon I can manage without those in favor of pliers and cutters. The multitool does have a clip, so It'll sit nicely in my pocket. And to my eye it looks good too.
Coming back to Form vs Function. The Navy Knife beats the Milwaukee and Buck hands down. Depending on my needs, it also beats the knife (multitool) I want to get. But, for everyday carry I want a straight blade and pocket clip - the Swiss Navy Knife has neither.
The Buck just feels right, and wood and brass wins out over a plastic grip plastic any day. I can forgive the lack of a pocket clip for the Buck's great looks and wonderful feel.
For the moment the Milwaukee Fastback and Swiss Navy Knife will be consigned to sitting on a shelf. When I get my multitool, it will become my everyday carry, and the Buck will get pride of place on my desk, and when I'm out backpacking or hiking it'll accompany me in my pack . But until I get the multitool the Buck will be my Everyday Carry.
