NARMADA PARIKRAMA

The Narmada also called the Rewa, is a river in central India and the fifth longest river in the Indian subcontinent. It is the third longest river that flows entirely within India, after the Godavari and the Krishna. It is also known as "Life Line of Madhya Pradesh" for its huge contribution to the state of Madhya Pradesh in many ways. It forms the traditional boundary between North India and South India and flows westwards over a length of 1,312 km (815.2 mi) before draining through theGulf of Khambhat into the Arabian Sea, 30 km (18.6 mi) west of Bharuch city of Gujarat. It is one of only three major rivers in peninsular India that run from east to west (longest west flowing river), along with the Tapti River and the Mahi River. It is the one of the rivers in India that flows in a rift valley, flowing west between the Satpura and Vindhya ranges. The other rivers which flows through rift valley include Damodar River in Chota Nagpur Plateau and Tapti. The Tapti River and Mahi River also flow through rift valleys, but between different ranges. It flows through the states of Madhya Pradesh(1,077 km (669.2 mi)), and Maharashtra, (74 km (46.0 mi))– (35 km (21.7 mi)) then along the border between Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra (39 km (24.2 mi) and the border between Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat and in Gujarat (161 km (100.0 mi)).

The Periplus Maris Erythraei (c. 80 AD) calls it the Nammadus, and theBritish Raj called it the Nerbudda or Narbada. Narmadā is a Sanskrit word meaning "the Giver of Pleasure".

To Hindus the Narmada is one of the five holy rivers of India; the other four beingGanges, Yamuna, Godavari and Kaveri. It is believed that a dip in any of these five rivers washes one's sins away. According to a legend, the river Ganges, polluted by millions of people bathing in it, assumes the form of a black cow and comes to the Narmada to bathe and cleanse itself in its holy waters. Legends also claim that the Narmada River is older than the river Ganges.

The river was mentioned by Ptolemy in the second century AD as Namade and by the author of the Periplus. The Ramayana, the Mahabharat, and thePuranas refer to it frequently. The Rewa Khand of Vayu Purana and the Rewa Khand of Skanda Purana are entirely devoted to the story of the birth and the importance of the river, and hence Narmada is also called the Rewa.

There are many fables about the origin of the Narmada. According to one of them, once Lord Shiva, the Destroyer of the Universe, meditated so hard that he started perspiring. Shiva's sweat accumulated in a tank and started flowing in the form of a river – the Narmada. Another legend has it that two teardrops that fell from the eyes of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, yielded two rivers – the Narmada and the Son.

Legends also say that for Lord Shiva, the Hindu God, the river is especially sacred on account of its origin, and it is often called Shankari, i.e., daughter of Shankar (Lord Shiva). All the pebbles rolling on its bed are said to take the shape of his emblem with the saying, "Narmada Ke Kanker utte Sankar" (a popular saying in the Hindi belt of India), which means that 'pebble stones of Narmada get a personified form of Shiva'. These lingam shaped stones (cryptocrytalline quartz), calledBanalinga also called (Banashivalingas) are much sought after for daily worship by the Hindus. The Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, constructed by Rajaraja Chola, has one of the biggest Banalingas. Adi Shankara met his guru Govinda Bhagavatpada on the banks of the river Narmada.

Narmada is also said to have been in love with the Sonbhadra, another river flowing on the Chota Nagpur Plateau. According to the Puranas, the Narmada is also called the Rewa, from its leaping motion (from the root 'rev') through its rocky bed.

Important religious places and Ghats along the course of the river, starting from its origin at Narmadakhund at Amarkantakhill, are a) the Amarkantak (in Sanskrit: Neck of Shiva) or Teertharaj (the King of Pilgrimages), b) Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, and Mahadeo temples, Nemawar Siddeshwar Mandir in the middle reach of the river – all named after Shiva, c) Chausath Yogini (sixty four yoginis) temple, d) Chaubis Avatar temple, e) Bhojpur Shiva temple and Bhrigu Rishi temple in Bharuch. The Narmada River is also worshipped as mother goddess by Narmadeeya Brahmins.

The importance of the Narmada River as sacred is testified by the fact that the pilgrims perform a holy pilgrimage of aparikrama or circumambulation of the river.[17] The Narmada Parikrama, as it is called, is considered to be a meritorious act that a pilgrim can undertake. Many sadhus and pilgrims walk on foot from the Arabian Sea at Bharuch in Gujarat, along the river, to the source in Maikal Mountains (Amarkantak hills) in Madhya Pradesh and back along the opposite bank of the river. It is a 2,600-kilometre (1,600 mi) walk.[18] Important towns of interest in the valley are Jabalpur, Barwani, Hoshangabad, Harda, Narmada Nagar, Omkareshwar, Dewas (Nemavar, Kity, Pipri), Mandla and Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh, andRajpipla and Bharuch in Gujarat. Some places of historical interest are Joga Ka Quilla, Chhatri of Baji Rao Peshwa andBhimbetka, and among the falls are the Dugdhdhara, Dhardi falls, Bheraghat, Dhuandhara, Kapiladhara and Sahastradhara.

Dopo il primo MiniCD "Down With the Madness" uscito per Countdown Records in Luglio 2007, i Concrete Block suonano costantemente e condividono il palco con Sepultura, Sick Of It All, Murphy's Law, Maroon, Shattered Realm, Skarhead, Agnostic Front, The Business, Slapshot e tanti altri.

Il bassista viene rimpiazzato perchè trova posto in un TV show come stand up commedia e l'album nuovo prende forma. Si arriva al 2013 con una piena attività live e "Twilight of the Gods", l'ultimo lavoro uscito per F.O.A.D. Records, registrato al One Black Sox studio da Carlo Girardi. E' la storia continua…

These photos caputure the festivity of Dahi Handi (pot of curd), which is popular in Maharashtra to celebrate.Janmashtami, the birth day of Lord Krishna. In the month of August- September.

Krishna would love to eat butter and curd, this would be kept in pots hanging from the roof tops.

So as a child he and his friend would form a human pyramid (just like in the photos) to reach the pots and steal the butter. He would enter the houses of the many gopis and carry out his mischief. In spite of this he was loved by one and all.

There are many folk tales and songs spun around this story and are very popular all over India.

This is called Dahi Handi in Maharashtra, were people will tie the dahi handi along with some cash award. During the day various groups come and take the challenge by building mult-story human layers.

At the place were I took these photos the qualifying levels were seven human layers.

In the evening the qualified groups take the challenge of going even higher. At this place the max layers which were made was 9 human layer. This is believed to be a world record.

More about Lord Krishna's birth story here.

This picture of a White-throated Sparrow (tan form or tan morph or tan striped) was taken in Brantford, Ontario.

From Wikipedia: There are two adult plumage variations known as the tan-striped and white-striped forms. On the white-striped form the crown is black with a white central stripe. The supercilium is white as well. The auriculars are gray with the upper edge forming a black eye line.[3]

On the tan form, the crown is dark brown with a tan central stripe. The supercilium is tan as well. The auriculars are gray/light brown with the upper edge forming a brown eye line. Both variations feature dark eyes, a white throat, yellow lores and gray bill.[3] There is variation and some individuals may show dark lateral stripes of each side of the throat.

They almost always pair with the opposite color morph for breeding. The two color morphs occur in approximately equal numbers. Both male and female white-striped birds are more aggressive than tan-striped birds during the breeding season.[6][7]

The breast has gray/tan streaks and the streaks continue down the flanks but the belly is generally light gray. The wings are rufous with two distinct white wing bars. Sexes are morphologically similar.[3]

Part of Azzedine Alaïa: The Couturier

(May to October 2018)

Azzedine Alaïa’s innovations in stretch fabrics were at least as important as his elevation of leather. In his hands, these transformed the silhouette of the wearer.

Rather than creating clothes anchored at strategic points – conventionally, the waist and the shoulders – Alaïa’s bandage dresses cling to the wearer’s form, conscious of the entire body. The stretch fabric allows these minimal silhouettes to move freely.

Debuted in 1986, these variations on the ‘Bandelette’ (bandage) dress are clearly inspired by ancient Egyptian mummification, but also perhaps by the swaddling of infants. The garments join Western and Eastern traditions – highly fitted and precision-cut, with a body simply and sensually wrapped in cloth.

The dresses seem simple, but each band of fabric is precisely engineered and cut to specific dimensions, according to its place on the figure. These creations ushered in the notion of physique-delineating ‘bodycon’ dressing, the defining aesthetic of the early 1990s.

Conceived and co-curated with Monsieur Alaïa before his death in November 2017, the exhibition charts his incredible journey from sculptor to couturier, his nonconformist nature and his infectious energy for fashion, friendship and the female body.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, Alaïa personally constructed each garment by hand and refused to bow to the pressures of fashion week deadlines, instead working to his own schedule. His collaborative approach earned him an esteemed client list, including Greta Garbo, Grace Jones, Michelle Obama and Rihanna.

Rather than a retrospective, the show interlaces stories of his life and career alongside personally selected garments, ranging from the rare to the iconic and spanning the early 1980s to his most recent collection in 2017.

Not an ink splodge in sight, just a little smudge done in the last 50 odd years.

For my fellow Bird Nerds! I couldn’t resist posting this crop. I love to zoom in on the feet of birds. They are beautiful, as well as prehistoric and dangerous looking to me. Great White Egrets are so elegant, but their feet are all business, with substantial claws. I also love the scales. This GWE was hanging out at Save Our Seabirds. He is wild, and he is free. I’m guessing he just likes the positive energy there and no doubt the occasional dropped fish during feeding time.

Hugs and thanks for viewing! =o)

Carte d’imbarco."

Formed by two huge volcanoes, Banks Peninsula sits to the east of Christchurch city and is a distinctive feature of the east coast of New Zealand's South Island.

Once covered in tall native forest the peninsula has been burned and felled in the early history of human settlement in New Zealand to the extent that only tiny scraps of the original cover remain.

Nevertheless it is a dramatic landscape with spectacular volcanic cliffs, and steeply rolling hills covered in grasses, scrub and forest remnants and often topped by volcanic crags and outcrops.

Godley heads is a popular walking and mountainbiking area only minutes from Christchurch city on the northern bank of Lyttelton harbour, the harbour itself being a sea-drowned crater.

With protection, some of the orginal forest is regenerating and birds locally extinct on the peninsula (or nearly so) such as the korimako (bellbird) are coming back.

The harsh climate and unique landscape of the peninsula and the neighbouring Kaitorete Spit have produced a number of plant and insect species not found anywhere else in New Zealand.

St. Cuthbert's is situated within Elsdon's 7.5 acres (3.0 ha) village green. Larger in size than many Northumbrian churches, it is situated close to the fortified vicarage. It is 21 miles (34 km) west-northwest from Morpeth.[2] The village and church are located along St. Cuthbert's Way.

The church shows evidence of extensive later medieval rebuilding. The cause may have been damage at the time of the 1388 Battle of Otterburn. The ceiling over the nave and the transept aisles forms quadrants, and slabs exist across the structure.[3] Of the present church, there are two transepts, one called Anderson's porch, and the other Hedley's porch.[4] The building had a leper window.[5] There are several deep cuts on one of the pillars of the arcade of the south aisle, which are of a different character from masons' marks, and considered likely to have been made by the sharpening of weapons upon them.[6]

In some country parishes in large sparsely-inhabited districts, it was expedient to build hearse-houses against the churches for the convenience of keeping a hearse for the use of the parishioners; one was built against the shady north side of the chancel of Elsdon's church.[7] The rectory house is an old tower with a circular staircase at one corner. Its lowest story is spanned with one large arch. On its front arch are the arms of the Hunfranvilles, with an inscription beneath.

The first church at Elsdon was probably constructed of oak, with a roof made of rushes. A subsequent church has few remains still in existence: Norman pilasters, and two small Norman windows in the west gable, circa 1100 or earlier.[4] Most of the current construction is 14th century.[8] St John the Evangelist's Church in Otterburn is a chapel-of-ease to St. Cuthbert's.[9]

The monks of Lindisfarne during their flight from the Danes, halted for a while with the relics of St. Cuthbert on what is now the site of Elsdon Church.

During of the 1877 church restoration, it was necessary to change the levels of the church flooring. The flooring was damp; the bases of the pillars were nearly covered and out of sight because of soil accumulation. The reduction of soil levels in the nave, transepts and chancel lead to the discovery of an immense collection of skeletons. The labourers reported that 996 whole skulls were re-interred, as well as a large number that were mutilated in the course of their removal. The remains of nearly 1200 of the former chief inhabitants of the district were disturbed and removed from their resting place, while approximately 300 or 400 were left where found. The skeletons appeared to have been disturbed by the interment of those more recently buried. No doubt the intra-mural interments had taken place during hundreds of years, the last having occurred in the late 18th century. The bones of the earlier deceased had frequently been moved to make room for their successors. Skulls were frequently found lying together in groups of three or four in one spot. No remains other than bones were found, with the exception of a very few coffin handles, with a little decayed wood, and in one instance a small quantity of hair.[5] It is possible that some bodies had been buried here after the Battle of Otterburn.[11]

Also in 1877, it was necessary to pull down the small spire, which terminated at the bell turret surmounting the church's western gable. In the spire, immediately over the bell, a small chamber was discovered, without any opening, and in it, nearly filling the cavity, were three horse skulls. When found, the three skulls were standing on their bases in a triangular form, mouths upwards, and leaning against each other at the top; the cavity seemed to have been purposely prepared for them. There were two large skulls and one smaller; two were well preserved, while one was decayed. The heads appeared to be two of draught horses, and one of a cob.[5] The reason for placing skulls in the bell turret may have been to increase the resonance.

MUSEO VIRREINAL

Steam returned to Robertsbridge over the weekend of Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd September 2013, in the form of A1X 'Terrier' 32670. It was moved over from the Kent & East Sussex Railway to the Rother Valley Railway, along with three 'Vintage' coaches, for the 'Return to Robertsbridge' event, which saw the loco work shuttle trips along the recently re-laid section of line from the RVR's newly constructed Robertsbridge Junction platform to North Street. Eventually, it will continue over North Street, along to the A21, where it will cross over and continue further until it reaches the section which has been reconstructed from K&ESR end, at Junction Road.

First day of 2014 Fall Classes!
